Purpose: To compare the polishing characteristics and their influence on Candida albicans adhesion to the recently introduced polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) and the conventional polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) denture resin material. Materials and methods: Specimens from PEKK (Group E) and PMMA (Group M) were made in dimensions of 8 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness. The specimens were further divided into sub-groups according to the extent of polishing (ER, MR: rough; EP, MP: polished, N = 12 each). The specimens were polished using polishing machine and SiC foil. ER and MR group specimens were polished with 600 grit SiC foil only. EP and MP groups were further polished with 800, 1,000, 1,200 grit SiC foils sequentially. To measure the surface roughness values (Sa) of specimens, atomic force microscope (AFM) was used and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation under 1,000, and 20,000 magnifications was performed to investigate surface topography. The polished specimens were soaked in C. albicans suspension for 2 hours with shaking to promote adhesion. The attached C. albicans were detached from the surface with 10 times of pipetting. The suspension of detached C. albicans was performed by serial dilution to 103 times, and the diluted suspensions were inoculated on Sabouraud dextrose agar plates using spread plate method. After incubating the plate for 48 hours, colony forming unit (CFU)/plate of C. albicans was counted. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test to confirm significant difference between the groups (α=.05). Results: Average Sa value was significantly higher in MR group compared to other groups (P<.05), meaning that additional polishing steps reduced surface roughness effectively only in the PMMA specimens. There was no significant difference in Sa values between MP and EP groups. In SEM images, PEKK specimens showed numerous spikes of abraded material protruding from the surface and this phenomenon was more significant in EP group. The mean CFU/plate value was the highest in EP group and this was significant when it was compared to MP group (P<.05) which was the lowest. Conclusion: Polishing PEKK using serial SiC abrasive foil may result in higher adhesion of C. albicans. In clinic, this should be considered carefully.
A control system for an automated line heating process is developed by use of object-oriented methodology. The main function of the control system is to provide real-time heating information to technicians or automated machines. The information includes heating location, torch speed, heating order, and others. The system development is achieved by following the five steps in the object-oriented procedure. First, requirements are specified and corresponding objects are determined. Then, the analysis, design, and implementation of the proposed system are sequentially carried out. The system consists of six subsystems, or modules. These are (1) the inference module with an artificial neural network algorithm, (2) the analysis module with the Finite Element Method and kinematics analysis, (3) the data access module to store and retrieve the forming information, (4) the communication module, (5) the display module, and (6) the measurement module. The system is useful, irrespective of the heating sources, i.e. flame/gas, laser, or high frequency induction heating. A newly developed automated line heating machine is connected to the proposed system. Experiments and discussions follow.
The tube flange joint often used in the field is a kind of tensional joint method using the high strength bolts. Transferring stress is conducted by high axial pressure between each part of material that is produced by twisting the high strength bolts. And historical characteristics of the flange joint have not been studied sufficiently and it is difficult to say that the design method is established definitely. Therefore new method using ultimate strength is need to be suggested to solve there problems in using flange joint. The purposes in this study are to gain the data base for establishing design method of joint in the form like figure1 and survey whether the joint of tube flange with non-equal diameter can be designed or not in the form like rib or ring.

Electrical instruments and devices contained in cabinets for controlling nuclear power plants require seismic qualification; likewise, in-cabinet response spectrum (ICRS) is necessary. Gupta et al. (1999) suggested the Ritz method, where rocking, frame bending, and plate bending behaviors of cabinets are considered, as a method for determining ICRS. This research proposes a method to determine the rocking stiffness of cabinets, which represents its rocking behavior. The cabinet is fixed on mounting frames and is connected to the base concrete by anchors. When horizontal excitation is applied to the cabinet, the mounting frames at anchors are locally deformed, the mounting frames are bent, and then rocking in the cabinet becomes evident. A method to determine equivalent vertical spring stiffness representing the local deformation of the mounting frames at anchors is then proposed. Subsequently, the rocking stiffness of this mounting frame is calculated upon assumption of the mounting frame as an indeterminate beam.
This paper reports the design and fabrication of a micro-electro-mechanical-system(MEMS)-based electrostatic angular microactuator for a dual-stage servo. The proposed actuator employs a novel electrode pattern named "skewed electrode array(SEA)" scheme. It is shown that SEA has better linearity than a parallel plate type actuator and stronger force than a comb-drive based actuator. The moving and the fixed electrodes are arranged to make the driving force perpendicular to the rotating moment of arm. By changing the electrode overlap length, the magnitude of electrostatic force and stable displacement will be changed. In order to optimize the design, an electrostatic FE analysis was carried out and an empirical force model was established for SEA. A new assembly method which will allow the active electrodes to be located beneath the slider was developed. The active electrodes are connected by inner and outer rings lifted on the base substrate, and the inner and outer rings are connected to platform on which the slider locates. Electrostatic force between active electrodes and platform can be used for exiting out of plane modes, so this provides the possibility of the flying height control. A microactuator that can position the pico-slider over ${\pm}0.5{\mu}m$ using under 20 volts for a 2 kHz fine-tracking servo was designed and fabricated using SoG process.

Resonance phenomena occurs at large vertical pump which is operating to cool down the hot steam using sea water in the power plant. To avoid the resonance, the natural frequency needs to be isolated about 20% from motor operating speed. Yet, excessive vibration occurs especially at low tide. At first, natural frequency of the whole pump system and each part is calculated using ANSYS. As it is revealed in the previous journal papers that only circular pipe part is related to resonance, the FSI technique is applied for free vibration analysis. The natural frequency is reduced to 60% (compared to that) of the frequency measured in air as it is similar to other published results. And the frequency obtained by finite element analysis is almost same to that obtained from modal test. Based on the accurate finite element model and analysis, design change is tried to avoid the resonance by changing the thickness of pipe and base supporting plate. In stead of doing optimization process, design sensitivity is computed and used to find such designs to avoid resonance.

Although detailed shell analysis is suitable to predict the ductile crack initiation life of steel members, such detailed method adds time expense and complexity. In order to simply predict the ductile crack initiation life of stiffened steel bridge piers, a total of 33 cases are simulated to carry out the parametric analyses. In the analysis, the effects of the width-to-thickness ratio, slenderness ratio, plate thickness and so on are considered. Both shell analyses and beam analyses about these 33 cases are conducted. The plastic strain and damage index obtained from shell and beam analyses are compared. The modified factor βs is determined based on the predicted results obtained from both shell and beam analyses in order to simulate the strain concentration at the base corner of the steel bridge piers. Finally, three experimental results are employed to verify the validity of the proposed method in this study.
Welding deformation during the assembly process is affected by not only local shrinkage due to rapid heating and cooling, but also root gap and misalignment between parts to be welded. Therefore, the prediction and control of welding deformation have become of critical importance. In this study, it was focused on the development of the 3-axis apparatus for real-time measurement of the welded deformation. To achieve the objective, a D-H algorithm has been carried out to check the behavioral and performance evaluation for the developed robot. The sequence experiments were taken the base materials of $400{\times}200{\times}4.5mm$ plate for butt welding. The real-time experimental measurements are in good agreement with the measured results.
Wet underwater arc welding process is investigated by using experimentally developed flux coated underwater arc welding electrode and SS400 steel plate of 12mm thickness as base metal. Three kinds of different flux covered wet arc welding electrode of 4mm diameter(BK-01, BK-02, BK-03) are individually developed, and one of the improved underwater welding electrode (BK-03) may be put to practical use for underwater wet arc welding process. The results obtained from this experimental study are as follows : 1. Arc stability of developed underwater wet welding electrode is better than that of the domestic covered arc welding electrode. 2. Workability of welding electrode, remove ability of slag and bead appearances using improved underwater wet welding electrode are remarkably better than that of others. 3. Heat affected zone of test specimen welded in the underwater gets to become a lot smaller than that of test specimen welded in the air, and the maximum hardness of heat affect zone of developed underwater wet welding electrode is lower to that of domestic arc welding electrode.

This paper describes an experimental study on fatigue life extension by using cold working process in fastener hole of aircraft structure. Cold working process was applied for A12024-7351 specimens by considering the effect of edge margin on fatigue life. It is generally recognized that cold working process offers a protective zone around fastener hole of aluminum aircraft structure due to the residual compressive stresses which lead to retardation of crack growth. Thus this process provides the beneficial effect of increasing the fatigue life of the component. there by decreasing maintenance costs. It has also been successfully incorporated into damage tolerance and structural integrity programs. Cold working specimens were tested at constant amplitude peak cyclic stresses. Fatigue life of cold working specimen compared with that of specimen fabricated with base material. The increase of fatigue life for cold working specimen is discussed by both considering the effect of residual compressive stresses measured by X-ray diffraction technique and quantitative effect of edge margin.
