  • Background: Ionizing radiation is known to be harmful to human health. The shielding of ionizing radiation depends on the attenuation which can be achieved by three main rules, i.e. time, distance and absorbing material. Materials and Methods: The mass attenuation coefficient, linear attenuation coefficient, Half Value Layer (HVL) and Tenth Value Layer (TVL) of X-rays (32 keV, 74 keV) and gamma rays (662 keV) are measured in Barium compounds. Results and Discussion: The measured values agree well with the theory. The effective atomic numbers ($Z_{eff}$) and electron density (Ne) of Barium compounds have been computed in the wide energy region 1 keV to 100 GeV using an accurate database of photon-interaction cross sections and the WinXCom program. Conclusion: The mass attenuation coefficient and linear attenuation coefficient for $BaCO_3$ is higher than the $BaCl_2$, $Ba(No_3)_2$ and BaSO4. HVL, TVL and mean free path are lower for $BaCO_3$ than the $BaCl_2$, $Ba(No_3)_2$ and $BaSO_4$. Among the studied barium compounds, $BaCO_3$ is best material for x-ray and gamma shielding.

  • The M-type barium ferrite ($BaFe_{12}O_{19}$) is well known magnetic material to be used as a permanent magnet due to its strong uniaxial anisotropy. The substitution of nonmagnetic $Ti^{+4}$ and magnetically weak $Co+^2ion for Fe^{+3}$ to its strong uniaxial anisotropy. The substitution of nonmagnetic $Ti^{+4}$ and magnetically weak $Co+^2ion for Fe^{+3}$ sublattices reduces the uniaxial anisotropy and those compounds open a new application field of noise suppressor at high frequencies. In this study, the magnetic and microwave absorbing properties are investigated in Ti-and Co-substituted barium ferrites ($BaFe_{12-2X} Ti_XCo_XO_{19}$). The saturated magnetization decreases linearly with the substitution of Ti and Co. The rapid drop in coercive force is observed with Ti and Co substitution upto x=1.2. The magnetic permeability spectrum shows the natural magnetic resonance in the specimens with small coercive force and large attenuation of microwave is predicted in those specimens at high frequencies (above 4 GHz).

  • This study is devoted to the ability of carbon fiber material samples impregnated with various amounts of barium iodide and triethylenediamine to remove radioactive methyliodide from air streams. The main sorption characteristics of impregnated UVIS® carbon fiber were determined and the use of this material for purifying of technological gas flows at nuclear power plants was evaluated. The methyliodide trapping efficiency by samples impregnated with barium iodide, TEDA, and their mixture was 83.4 ± 0.8%; 93.1 ± 0.6% and 93.5 ± 0.7% respectively, under the same conditions. The study established a significantly higher capacity (8.3 ± 0.07 mg/cm2) of samples impregnated simultaneously with both chemical compounds toward methyliodide. Under the same test conditions, the values of this parameter for the samples impregnated separately with TEDA and BaI2 were 2.85 ± 0.05 mg/cm2 and 0.86 ± 0.04 mg/cm2, respectively.

  • This study made a tentative estimation of the shielding rate of barium compound by thickness through monte carlo simulation to apply medical radiation shielding products that can replace existing lead. Barium sulfate($BaSO_4$) was used for the shielding material, and thickness of the shielding material specimen was simulated from 0.1 mm to 5 mm by applying $15{\times}15cm^2$ of specimen area, $4.5g/cm^3$ of density of barium sulfate, and $11.34g/cm^3$ density of lead. Entered source was simulated with 10kVp Step in consecutive X-ray energy spectrum(40 kVp ~ 120 kVp). Absorption probability in 40 kVp ~ 60 kVp showed same shielding rate with lead in 3 mm ~ 5 mm of thickness, but it was identified that under 2 mm, the shielding rate was a bit lower than the existing lead shielding material. Also, the shielding rate in 70 kVp ~ 120 kVp energy band showed similar performance as the existing lead shielding material, but it was tentatively estimated as fairly low shielding rate below 0.5 mm. This study estimated the shielding rate of barium compound as the thickness function of x-ray energy band for medical radiation through monte carlo simulation, and made comparative analysis with existing lead. Also, this study intended to verify application validity of the x-ray shielding material for medical radiation of pure barium sulfate. As a result, it was estimated that the shielding effect was 95% higher than the existing lead 1.5 mm in at least 2 mm thickness of barium compound in medical radiation energy band 70 kVp ~ 120 kVp, and this result is considered valid to be provided as a base data in weight lightening production of radiation shielding product for medical radiation.

  • Cluster systems are microcrystals of vanadiumoxided compounds such as Barium, Calcium or Sodium Metavanadates or Sodium Vanadium Bronze which are distributed into dimethyl- or diethylphosphites or microcrystals of vanadium oxides, for instance, vanadium oxide (+3), distributed into the methylphosphonic acid melted. During the interaction of vanadium compounds with the correspondent phosphororganic substances biue viscous liquids are formed. These liquids have paramagnetic properties. According to the UV and IR spectroscopic investigations as well as the results of EPR spectra the substances obtained consist of the nucleus containing 6 to 12 of vanadium atoms and the shell including ligands which are molecules of phosphites or methylphosphonic acid. Here every atom of vanadium interacts with four of phosphorus containing molecules. Sizes of the particles in these systems donot exceed 200 nm. Introduction of cluster systems (0,1 -0,3 % vanadium) into epoxy compositions before the introduction of curing agent - polyethylenepolyamine 6 -8 % leads to the acceleration of composition crosslinking and to the combustion decreasing: 1) Oxygen Index grows to 35: 2)mass losses during combustion decrease to 1-2%, 3) combustion time does not exceed 1 s; 4) the intumescence of material sample is being observed during the burner action as well as the foam coke formation.

  • Effects of hydrogenation in amorphous silicon rile growths on Solid Phase Crystallization (SPC) was investigated using x-ray diffractometry, energy dispersive Spectroscopy, and Raman spectrum. Interdiffusion of barium(Ba) and aluminum(Al) compounds of corning substrate was observed in both of rf sputtering and LFCVD films under the low temperature(580$^{\circ}C$) annealing. Low degree of crystallinity resulted from the interdiffusion was obtained. Highly applicable degree of crystallinity was obtained through the mechanical damage induced surface activation on amorphous silicon films. X-ray diffraction intensity of (111) orientation was used to characterize the degree of crystallinity of SPC. Nucleation and growth rate in SPC could be controllable through the employed surface treatment. IIydrogenated LPCVD films showed the superior crystallinity to non-hydrogenated sputtering films. Insignificant effects of activation treatment in sputtered film was of activation treatment in sputtered film was observed on SPC.

  • Solid solutions between $BaTiO_3$ and $LaFeO_3$ have been prepared through a solid state reaction method. The X-ray diffraction results reveal that $Ba_{1-x}La_xTi_{1-x}Fe_xO_3$ ($0.1\;{\leq}\;x\;{\leq}\;0.7$) compounds have a cubic structure, whereas the parent material $BaTiO_3$ has a tetragonal structure. The magnetization measurements indicate that the materials have a magnetic ordering at room temperature and the magnetic properties of the solid solutions depending on the doping amount of $LaFeO_3$. The origin of magnetic behaviors is believed to be from $Fe^{3+}$ ions.

  • Microanalysis of organic sulfur compounds by means of combining thin layer chromatography and oxygen combustion flask method was attempted. The following procedure was found to be very simple and to give accurate results. The mixture of sulfa drugs was separated with T.L.C., and it was burned in a flask filled with oxygen, and the gas formed was absorbed in a dilute solution of sodium hydroxide. The solution was neuralized with hydrochloric acid and heated in a water bath. The sulfate ion formed was then treated with barium chromate solution and its absorbancy at 370 m.mu. was measured.

  • A coercivity of barium ferrite (BaM) tape was found to be higher than the coercivity of BaM powder, This difference is in the range of 50 Oe to 600 Oe, which depends on substituted cations. physical properties of powder, and preparation conditions of the tape. The coercivity difference is attributed to both particle stacking and adsorption of organic solvent on particle surface. Regardless of substituted cations, the coercivity of longitudinally oriented BaFe tape was higher than that of BaM powder by a range of 100 Oe to 120 Oe, which is caused by particle stacking' During the active adsorption process on preparation of magnetic paint, where MEK (methyl ethyl ketone), TOL (toluene) and CHO (cyclohexanone) were used, chemisorption of solvents on the surface of substituted BaFe particle occurred to form polymeric compounds surrounding the particle. An increase in coercivity, caused by the solvent adsorption, was significant for Co-substutited BaM tape. Among these solvents CHO was the most effective one in increasing the coercivity of the Co-Ti substituted BaM tape.

  • (Ba,Sr)TiO$_{4}$ (BST) thin films on Pt/Ti/SiO$_{2}$/Si substrates were deposited by a sol-gel method and the etch characteristics of BST thin films have been investigated as a function of gas mixing ratio. The maximum etch rate of the BST films was 440 $AA$/min under such conditions as: CF$_{4}$(CF$_{4}$+Ar) of 0.2, RF-power of 700 W, DC-bias voltage of -200 V, pressure of 15 mTorr and substrate temperature of 30 $^{circ}C$. The selectivities of BST to Pt, SiO$_{2}$ and PR were 0.38, 0.25 and 0.09, respectively. In the XPS (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy) analysis, Barium (Ba) and Strontium (Sr) component in BST thin films formed low volatile compounds such as BaFx, SrFx, which are forms by the chemical reaction with F atoms and is removed by Ar ion bombardment. Titanium (Ti) is removed by chemical reaction such as TiF with ease. The result of secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) analysis confirmed the existence of the BaFx, SrFK, TiFx.
