Snoop protocol is one of the efficient schemes to compensate TCP packet loss and enhance TCP throughput in wired-cum-wireless networks. However, Snoop protocol has a problem: it cannot perform local retransmission efficiently under the bursty-error prone wireless link. To solve this problem, SACK-Aware-Snoop and SNACK mechanism have been proposed. These approaches improve the performance by using SACK option field between base station and mobile host. However in the wireless channel with high packet loss rate, SACK-Aware-Snoop and SNACK mechanism do not work well because of two reason: (a) end-to-end performance is degraded because duplicate ACKs themself can be lost in the presence of bursty error, (b) energy of mobile device and bandwidth utilization in the wireless link are wasted unnecessarily because of SACK option field in the wireless link. In this paper, we propose a new local retransmission scheme based on Cross-layer approach, called Cross-layer Snoop(C-Snoop) protocol, to solve the limitation of previous localized link layer schemes. C-Snoop protocol includes caching lost TCP data and performing local retransmission based on a few policies dealing with MAC-layer's timeout and local retransmission timeout. From the simulation result, we could see more improved TCP throughput and energy efficiency than previous mechanisms.
In recent years, application of UAV(Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) to seed sowing and pest control has been actively carried out in the field of agriculture. In this study, UAS(Unmanned Aerial System) is constructed by combining image sensor of various wavelength band and SfM((Structure from Motion) based image analysis technique in UAV. Utilization of UAS based vegetation survey was investigated and the applicability of precision farming was examined. For this purposes, a UAS consisting of a combination of a VIS_RGB(Visible Red, Green, and Blue) image sensor, a modified BG_NIR(Blue Green_Near Infrared Red) image sensor, and a TIR(Thermal Infrared Red) sensor with a wide bandwidth of $7.5{\mu}m$ to $13.5{\mu}m$ was constructed for a low cost UAV. In addition, a total of ten vegetation indices were selected to investigate the chlorophyll, nitrogen and water contents of plants with visible, near infrared, and infrared wavelength's image sensors. The images of each wavelength band for the test area were analyzed and the correlation between the distribution of vegetation index and the vegetation index were compared with status of the previously surveyed vegetation and ground cover. The ability to perform vegetation state detection using images obtained by mounting multiple image sensors on low cost UAV was investigated. As the utility of UAS equipped with VIS_RGB, BG_NIR and TIR image sensors on the low cost UAV has proven to be more economical and efficient than previous vegetation survey methods that depend on satellites and aerial images, is expected to be used in areas such as precision agriculture, water and forest research.

Recently, world-wide research activities on new network architectures and protocols are being actively progressed. Furthermore, research activities on testbed and related technologies for supporting those activities are being actively performed. In domestic study, research on the OpenFlow protocol based future Internet testbed implementation and research on its virtualization for supporting independent research experiments are being performed at the same time. The network virtualization is a technology which maximizes the testbed utilization without interfering each other for the individual research when many researchers share the testbed. In this paper, we implemented a Enhanced FlowVisor by extending basic FlowVisor by adding QoS functions which are admission control and minimum bandwidth guarantee. On the testbed, we performed a real-time video streaming experiment for verifying the performance of the Enhnaced FlowVisor on the OpenFlow protocol based future internet testbed. The result shows that the Enhanced FlowVisor can provide reliable and stable QoS to the individual researches without disturbing each other traffic on virtualized networks of the future Internet testbed.
Hybrid broadcasting environment is convergence of broadcasting and communication environment. In hybrid broadcasting environment, a number of media can be delivered using both broadcasting channel and other network unlike traditional broadcast environment that is able to deliver a couple of media by the limited bandwidth. Now, starting with smart TV, hybrid broadcasting environment combining broadcasting channel and IP network is established, and a variety of services are appearing. Moreover, the services using hybrid broadcasting environment are expected to appear soon for the other smart terminals such as smart phone and tablet PC. Scene composition is one of the methods that can consume effectively a number of media delivered from hybrid broadcasting environment. Using scene composition, multiple media can be consumed through the specified presentation time and space. Therefore, in this paper, it proposes the scene composition technology that is suitable for hybrid broadcasting environment and smart terminals. However, the spatial composition and temporal composition of media using script language and style language of HTML5 might increase the complexity of processing, and cause limitation of avaliable terminals. Also, a document of HTML5 can describe only one scene. By these reason, the proposed scene composition technology extends HTML5 in order to provide the spatial and temporal composition of media and description of multiple scene through markup language. In addition, it includes the extension of HTML5 in terms of utilization in hybrid broadcasting environment. For this proposal, this paper describes the technology of HTML5 and proposed scene composition. Also, it verifies the scene composition with both implementations and experiments.
Excessive memory buffer requirement in continuous media playback is a serious impediment of wide spread usage of on-line multimedia service. Skewed access frequency of available video files provides an opportunity of re-using the date blocks which has been loaded by one session for later usage. We present novel algorithm which minimizes the buffer requirement in multiple sessions of multimedia playbacks. In continuous media playback originated from the disk, a certain amount of memory buffer is required to synchronize asynchronous disk. Read operation and synchronous playback operation. As aggregate playback bandwodth increases, larger amount of buffer needs to be allocated for this synchronization purpose. The focus of this work is to study the asymptotic behavior of the synchronization buffer requirement and to develop an algorithm coping with this excessive buffer requirement under bandwidth congestioon. We argue that in a large scale continuous media server, it may not be necessary to read the blocks for each session directly from the disk. The beauty of our work lies in the fact that it dynamically adapts to disk utilization of the server and finds the optimal way of servicinh the individual sessions while minimizing the overall buffer space requirement. Optimality of the proposed algorithm is shown by proof. The effectiveness and performance of the proposed scheme is examined via simulation.

The methods of providing available bandwidth adaptively using feedback to maximize the utilization of network as well as the quality of service have been the focus of recent research activities for ATM(Asynchronous Transfer Mode). This study has been extended from the point-to-point connection to a point-to-multipoint environment as the number of applications requiring multicast service increases. It is known that the effectiveness of feedback based congestion control scheme diminishes as propagation delay increases. Especially for a multicast connection consisting of various paths and destinations with different performance and congestion status, the problem of unfairness due to different propagation delays may occur. The degree of such unfairness may change depending on various aspects of congestion control schemes. These has been, however, relatively little study on these problems. In this paper, we present how various aspects of control schemes-length of the interval between feedback generations, point of time to coalesce feedback cells from child paths, decreasing factor of source rate in case of congestion-affect the degree of unfairness. Simulation results show that degree of unfairness changes according to when the feedback coalescing happens. Expecially it is shown that the effect of feedback coalescing time to the degree of unfairness is more significant for the smaller feedback interval. It is also found that as the source rate decreasing factor becomes larger the average ACR(Allowed Cell Rate) at the source gets lower and the degree of unfairness grow larger.
By choosing Multicast for transmission of educational contents in the Remote Educational System, we can reduce the server load and increase network bandwidth utilization. We design and implement Multicast Middleware for the Remote Educational System in this paper. There are three characteristics in this Multicast Middleware: 1) Through Centralized Multicast Group Management for passive members, it allows a host to make multicast group, which is composed of receivers, called Group Member and who are chosen by the host, called group Maker. Because, all groups are created by the Group Maker in Centralized Group Management, Group Member's join action will be passive 2) Maintenance and recovery of multicast group information in order to restore from exception and crash; the maintenance and recovery mechanism of Group Maker is distinct from that of Group Member. 3) The mechanism which enables to transmit large size multimedia data through multicasting and remove additional copy operation through shared buffer. Fragmentation/de-fragmentation for large data delivery results in additional copy operation in user level. But by using user level shared buffer, it can be done without user Bevel copy operation. By applying to Remote Educational environment which consists of 30 PCs and Fast Ethernet, we can examine the efficiency of this middleware, which can transmit 18frames/sec movie which resolution 320 $\times$ 120 pixels, 128Kbps encoded sound data and some text data.

In recent years, the needs for WLANs(Wireless Local Area Networks) technology which can access to Internet anywhere have been dramatically increased particularly in SOHO(Small Office Home Office) and Hot Spot. However, unlike wired networks, there are some unique characteristics of wireless networks. These characteristics include the burst packet losses due to unreliable wireless channel. Note that burst packet losses, which occur when the distance between the wireless station and the AP(Access Point) increase or when obstacles move temporarily between the station and AP, are very frequent in 802.11 networks. Conversely, due to burst packet losses, the performance of 802.11 networks are not always as sufficient as the current application require, particularly when they use TCP at the transport layer. The high packet loss rate over wireless links can trigger unnecessary execution of TCP congestion control algorithm, resulting in performance degradation. In order to overcome the limitations of WLANs environment, MAC-layer LDA(Loss Differentiation Algorithm)has been proposed. MAC-layer LDA prevents TCP's timeout by increasing CRD(Consecutive Retry Duration) higher than burst packet loss duration. However, in the wireless channel with high packet loss rate, MAC-layer LDA does not work well because of two reason: (a) If the CRD is lower than burst packet loss duration due to the limited increase of retry limit, end-to-end performance is degraded. (b) energy of mobile device and bandwidth utilization in the wireless link are wasted unnecessarily by Reducing the drainage speed of the network buffer due to the increase of CRD. In this paper, we propose a new retransmission module based on Cross-layer approach, called BLD(Burst Loss Detection) module, to solve the limitation of previous link layer retransmission schemes. BLD module's algorithm is retransmission mechanism at IEEE 802.11 networks and performs retransmission based on the interaction between retransmission mechanisms of the MAC layer and TCP. From the simulation by using ns-2(Network Simulator), we could see more improved TCP throughput and energy efficiency with the proposed scheme than previous mechanisms.
