WFQ (Weighted Fair Queuing) provides not only fairness among traffic flows in using bandwidth but also guarantees the Quality of Service (QoS) that individual flow requires, which is why it has been applied to the resource reservation protocol (RSVP)-capable router. The RSVP allocates an enough resource to satisfy both the rate and end-to-end delay requirements of the flow in the condition of no packet loss, and the WFQ scheduler guarantees those QoS requirements with the allocated resource. In practice, however, most QoS-guaranteed services allow a degree of packet loss, especially from 0.1% to 3% for Voice over IP. This paper discovers that the packet loss rate of each traffic flow is determined by only its time-stamp adjustment value, and then enhances the WFQ to provide a differentiated packet loss guarantee under general traffic conditions in terms of both traffic characteristics and QoS requirements. The performance evaluation showed that the proposed WFQ could increase the utilization of bandwidth by 8~11%.

In this paper, we propose an optimal streaming service method based on Hybrid CDN/P2P architecture. Recently, video streaming utilizes a CDN (Content Delivery Network) operation technique based on a Proxy Server, which is an end node located close to a user. However, since CDN has a fixed network traffic bandwidth and data information exchange among CDNs in the network is not smooth, it is difficult to guarantee traffic congestion and quality of image service. In the hybrid CDN/P2P network, a data selection technique is used to select only the data that is expected to be continuously requested among all the data in order to guarantee the QoS of the user who utilizes the limited bandwidth efficiently. In order to search user requested data, this technique effectively retrieves the storage information of the constituent nodes of CDN and P2P, and stores the new image information and calculates the deletion priority based on the request possibility as needed. Therefore, the streaming service scheme proposed in this paper can effectively improve the quality of the video streaming service on the network.
Ethernet passive optical network is an economical and efficient access network that has received significant research attention in recent years. A MAC(Media Access Control) protocol of PON, the next generation access network, is based on TDMA(Time Division Multiple Access) basically. In this thesis, we addressed the problem of dynamic bandwidth allocation in QoS based Ethernet PONs. We augmented the bandwidth allocation to support QoS in a differentiated services framework. Our differentiated bandwidth guarantee allocation(DBGA) allocates effectively and fairly bandwidths among end users. Moreover, we showed that DBGA that perform weighted bandwidth allocation for high priority packets result in better performance in terms of average and maximum packet delay, as well as network throughput compared with existing dynamic bandwidth allocations. We used simulation experiments to study the performance and validate the effectiveness of the proposed bandwidth allocations.

This paper proposes a call admission control scheme for delay guarantee in the wireless mesh networks. The admission of a new call is determined based on the expected delay inferred from the class level available bandwidth at nodes on the path. All nodes under the effects of the new call are considered in designing the call admission control scheme to maintain the delay guarantee of the pre-existing traffic. An effective technique for estimating the available bandwidth of the neighbor nodes is proposed with no addition of message interchanges. The class-level delay control is mainly performed by the queueing discipline while keeping the MAC operation simple. Simulations are performed to show the validity of the proposals. We observe acceptable performances in delay expectation with the addition of new calls. We also show that the proposed call admission control is helpful in guaranteeing the delay performances.

Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) has been developed as a key technology to enhance the reliability, manageability and overall quality of service of core If networks with connection-oriented tunnel LSP and traffic engineering such as constraint-based routing, explicit routing, and restoration. In this paper, we propose a control bandwidth borrowing scheme that maximizes the utilization of tunnel LSPs or physical links by an extension to the RSVP-TE label distribution protocol. MPLS-based core switching network and VPN services rely on the establishment of connection-oriented tunneled LSPs that are configured or predefined by network management systems. The mechanism of network management system varies from (i) a relatively static LSP establishment accounting, to (ii) a dynamic QoS routing mechanisms. With the use of hierarchical LSPs, the extra bandwidth that is unused by the trunk (outer) LSPs should be fully allocated to their constituent end-to-end user traffic (inner) LSPs in order to maximize their utilization. In order to find out the unused extra bandwidth in tunnel LSP or physical link and redistribute these resources to constituent LSPs, we expend the functionality of RSVP-TE and the found unused extra bandwidth is redistributed with a weight-based recursive redistribution scheme. By the extended RSVP-TE and proposed recursive redistributed scheme, we could achieve the instantaneous maximized utilization of tunnel LSP or physical link suffering from the potential under-utilization problem and guarantee the end-to-end QoS requirements. With the proposed scheme, network manager can manage more effectively the extra available bandwidth of hierarchical LSPs and maximize the instantaneous utilization of the tunneled LSP resources.
Measuring the end-to-end available bandwidth in the Internet is a useful tool for distributedapplication services or QoS (Quality-of-Service) guarantee. To measure the end-to-end available bandwidth, Single-hop Gap model-based packet train measurement techniques are well-known. However, the error of packet train output gap can happen by network topologies. This error of the output gap causes the inaccuracy of the available bandwidth measurement. In this paper, we propose a new end-to-end available bandwidth measurement technique with accurate capacity measurement and fast convergence methods. To solve the erroneous capacity measurement problem of the back-to-back packet train transmission, we propose a new available bandwidth measurement method by decoupling the capacity measurement with the initial gap of the packet train. Also, we propose a new technique to predict the proper initial gap of the packet train for faster convergence. We evaluate our proposed method by the simulation in various topologies comparing with previous methods.

When the bandwidth resources in a packet-switched network are shared among sessions by MAX-MIN flow control each session is required to transmit its data into the network subject to the MAX-MIN fair rate which is solely determined by network loadings. This passive behavior of sessions if fact can cause seri-ous QoS(Quality of Service) degradation particularly for real-time multimedia sessions such as video since the rate allocated by the network can mismatch with what is demanded by each session for its QoS. In order to alleviate this problem we extend the concept of MAX-MIN fair bandwidth allocations as follows: Individual bandwidth demands are guaranteed if the network can accommodate them and only the residual network band-width is shared in the MAX-MIN fair sense. On the other hand if sum of the individual bandwidth demands exceeds the network capacity the shortage of the bandwidth is shared by all the sessions by reducing each bandwidth guarantee by the MAX-MIN fair division of the shortage. we present a novel flow control algorithm to achieve this extended MAX-MIN fairness and show that this algorithm can be implemented by the existing ATM ABR service protocol with minor changes. We not only analyze the steady state asymptotic stability and convergence rate of the algorithm by appealing to control theories but also verify its practical performance through simulations in a variety of network scenarios.
Abstract As interest in wireless hand-held terminals and in personal communications services increases recently, there have been broad studies on the ways to support multimedia applications provided in wired networks such as B-ISDN (Broadband Integrated Services Digital Network) in wireless networks. However, since many studies have focused on Quality of Service (QoS) Provisioning in wired networks to provide multimedia applications, new methods of QoS Provisioning are needed in wireless networks to resolve the problem of wireless channel fading and the difficulty of mobility occurred in wireless networks. This paper proposes three schemes of QoS Provisioning in wireless networks which will make continuous QoS guarantee and efficient use of limited wireless resources possible. The first scheme reserves bandwidth in proportion to the amount of real-time traffic in the neighbor cells to decrease the handoff dropping rate of delay sensitive real-time connections, adapting reserved bandwidth for efficient resource utilization. The second scheme is predictive bandwidth reservation scheme that utilizes the past handoff information. It can decrease overheads required to adapt bandwidth reservation. The last scheme is priority-based call admission control prioritizing traffic type (real-time traffic/ non-real-time traffic), connection type (new connection /handoff connection), and mobile terminal speed (fast mobile/slow mobile). Simulation results show that the proposed QoS Provisioning schemes improve the total system performance by achieving three goals - required QoS guarantee, higher bandwidth utilization and less overhead.

The differentiated service architecture is based on a simple model by applying a per-class service in the core node of the network. However, due to the simplified network behavior, the network structure and provisioning were more complicated. If a service provider wants the dynamic provisioning or better bandwidth guarantee, signaling protocol with QoS parameters or admission control method should be deployed in DiffServ network. However, these methods increase the complexity. Therefore, we proposed DPM2 mechanism for admission control in the DiffServ network. In this paper, we describe and survey the admission control methods that are applicable to IP networks and propose also the dynamic provisioning mechanism based on the bandwidth broker and distributed measurement based admission control and movable boundary bandwidth management to support heterogeneous QoS services in differentiated service networks. For the performance evaluation for proposed mechanism, we used ns-2 simulator.

In ATM switching system link bandwidth is one of the improtant resources. Thus ATM switching system must allocate the bandwidth to the users efficiently and guarantee the QoS. Especially to guarantee the QoS of the VBR traffic source such as video, users must declare the traffic characteristics and QoS expectations using UPC parameters. The CAC can use two multiplexig models in variation to link capacity and connection number. One is loseless multiplexing model; the second is a statistical multiplexing model. The loseless multiplexing model performs best when the number of mutiplexed sources is small, but as the number of multiplexed sources is increase the CAC must use the statistical multiplexing model. In this paper, the statistical multiplexing models are studied, which are suitable for high capacity ATM link on VBR traffic sources. The satistical multiplexing model and the loseless multiplexing model are combined. In statistical model we map the UPC parameters provided by new VBR connection to appropriate source traffic model. In the high capacity ATM link, as the connection number increases, the statical multiplexing gain increases.
