  • The pupose of this study on the surface finishing is to examine the performance of brushing as a means of reducing the surface roughness of the precision theaded shafts in ball screw assemblies. Ball screws provide superior performance compared to other types of screw feeds in terms of static and dynamic rolling resistance, backlash, and wear characteristics. The Reduction of the surface roughness of the lead shaft in ball screw assembiles is essential for precision movement, high speed/low noise tracel, and for low wear/long life. To reduce machine dependent errors that would influence the surface roughness compared with other lapping or polishing techniques, experiments will be performed using special wire brushes to polish precision ground shafts. The best results were obtained using the Al /sab 2/O /sab3/ brushes, with the Al /sab 2/O /sab3/ #500 grit brush producing a surface finish of approximately 0.7 .mu.m, and the Al /sab 2/O /sab3/ #600 grit producing a surface finish of approximately 0.8 .mu.m. Both of these results were produced at the highest wheel polishing speed of 3520 rpm. The SiC #500 brush produced a surface roughness of approximately 1 .mu.m at 3520 rpm.

  • Background/Aims: Endoscopic channels are difficult to clean and can cause infection transmission. We examined the effectiveness of a newly developed channel-cleaning ball brush (BB), which is sucked into the endoscopic channel and scrapes and cleans the lumen as it passes through. Methods: The upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopes used for patient examinations were randomly selected as the conventional brush (CB) or BB group. After manual cleaning, the presence or absence of carbohydrates, proteins, adenosine triphosphate, and hemoglobin was assessed. Results: Fifty-six and 58 endoscopes were cleaned with the CB and BB, respectively. Carbohydrate and protein were detected in one (1.8%) and two endoscopes (3.4%) in the CB and BB groups, respectively (p=1.000). Hemoglobin was observed in one (1.8%) and three endoscopes (5.2%) in the CB and BB groups, respectively (p=0.636). The adenosine triphosphate levels were 10.6±15.9 and 12.5±14.3 relative light units in the CB and BB groups, respectively (p=0.496). Twenty-seven (48.2%) and 19 (32.8%) endoscopes were positive for microbial cultures in the CB and BB groups, respectively (p=0.136). Conclusions: The efficacy of BB was not significantly different from that of CB in the endoscopic channel-cleaning process.

  • Surface-initiated atom transfer radical polymerization of 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) was carried out to produce high-density poly(MPC) brush on silicon wafer. Frictional properties of poly(MPC) was investigated by by sliding a glass ball (${\phi}\;10\;nm$) on the substrates over a distance of 20 mm at a sliding velocity of 90 mm/min under loading of 0.49 N at 298 K. Higher friction coefficients were observed in dry N2 atmosphere and in toluene condition, whereas the friction coefficients decreased to 0.02 in humid air and in water. It is supposed that water-swollen poly(MPC) brush works as a lubricant to moderate the interaction between brush and probe.

  • Two promising control candidates have been selected to test the sinusoidal reference tracking performance for a brush-type polishing machine having strong nonlinearities and disturbances. The controlled target system is an oscillating mechanism consisting of a common positioning stage of one degree-of-freedom with a screw and a ball nut driven by a servo motor those can be obtained commercially. Beside the strong nonlinearity such as stick-slip friction, the periodic contact of the polishing brush and the work piece adds an external disturbance. Selected control candidates are a Sliding Mode Control (SMC) and a variant of a feedback linearization control called Smooth Robust Nonlinear Control (SRNC). A SMC and SRNC are selected since they have good theoretical backgrounds, are suitable to be implemented in a digital environment and show good disturbance and modeling uncertainty rejection performance. It should be also noted that SRNC has a nobel approach in that it uses the position information to compensate the stickslip friction. For both controllers analytical and experimental studies have been conducted to show control design approaches and to compare the performance against the strong nonlinearity and the disturbances.

  • Although the voltage-applied discharge method is most widely used in the semiconductor and display industries, periodic management costs are incurred because the method causes defects due to the absorption of ambient fine dust and causes emitter tip contamination due to the discharge. The emitter tip contamination problem is caused by the accumulation of fine particles in ambient air due to the corona discharge of the ionizer. Fuzzy ball generation accelerates the wear of the emitter tip and deteriorates the performance of the ionizer. Although a mechanical cleaning method using a manual brush or an automatic brush is effective for contaminant removal, it requires management of additional mechanical parts by the user. In some cases, contaminants accumulated in the emitter may be transferred to the wafer or product. In order to solve this problem, we developed an ionizer for a clean environment that can remove the pencil-type emitter tip and directly ionize the surrounding gas molecules using the tungsten wire located inside the ion tank. As a result of testing and certification by the Korea Institute of Machinery and Materials, the average concentration was $0.7572particles/ft^3$, the decay time was less than two seconds, and the ion valance was 7.6 V, which is satisfactory.

  • The BLDC motor is used widely in industry due to its controllability and freedom from maintenance because there is no mechanical brush in the BLDC motor. Furthermore, it is suitable for high-speed applications, such as compressors and air blowers. For instance, for a compressor with a small impeller due to miniaturizing, the BLDC motor has to rotate at a very high speed to maintain the compression ratio of the compressor. Typically, to reach an ultra-high speed, airfoil bearings must be used in place of ball bearings because of their friction. Unfortunately, the characteristics of airfoil bearings change drastically depending on the revolution speed. In this paper, a BLDC motor with airfoil bearings is controlled with a PID controller. To analyze and determine the PID coefficients, the relay-feedback method is used. Additionally, for adaptive control, a fuzzy logic controller is used. Furthermore, the auto-tuning and self-tuning techniques are combined to control the BLDC motor. The proposed method is able to control the airfoil-bearing BLDC motor efficiently.
