  • In the present study, a numerical analysis on the sloshing in a tank with the harmonic motion was investigated. A VOF method was used for two-phase flows inside the sloshing tank and a source term of the momentum equation was applied for the harmonic motion. This numerical method was verified by comparing its results with the available experimental data. The sloshing in a tank causes the instability of the fluid flows and the fluctuation of the impact pressure on the tank. By these phenomena of the tank sloshing, the sloshing problems such as the failure and the noise of system can be generated. For the reduction of these sloshing problems, the various baffles such as the horizontal/vertical plate baffles and the porous baffles inside the tank are installed. With the installations of these baffles, the characteristics of the liquid behavior in the sloshing tank, the impact pressure on the wall, the amplitude of the free surface near the wall and the sloshing noise were numerically analyzed.

  • The conversion of a cellulose-producing cell ($Cel^+$) from Gluconacetobacter hansenii PJK (KCTC 10505 BP) to a non-cellulose-producing cell ($Cel^-$) was investigated by measuring the colony forming unit (CFU). This was achieved in a shaking flask with three slanted baffles, which exerted a strong shear stress. The addition of organic acid, such as glutamic acid and acetic acid, induced the conversion of microbial cells from a wild type to $Cel^-$ mutants in a flask culture. The supplementation of $1\%$ ethanol to the medium containing an organic acid depressed the con-version of the microbial cells to $Cel^-$ mutants in a conventional flask without slanted baffles. The addition of ethanol to the medium containing an organic acid; however, accelerated the conversion of microbial cells in the flask with slanted baffles. The $Cel^+$ cells from the agitated culture were not easily converted into $Cel^-$ mutants on the additions of organic acid and ethanol to a flask without Slanted baffles, but some portion of the $Cel^+$ cells were converted to $Cel^-$ mutants in a flask with slanted baffles. The conversion ratio of $Cel^+$ cells to $Cel^-$ mutants was strongly re-lated to the production of bacterial cellulose independently from the cell growth.

  • The present work investigates the local heat transfer characteristics and the associated frictional loss in a rectangular channel with inclined solid and perforated baffles to obtain the basic design data for gas turbine. Five different geometries of baffles such as 1) solid (without hole), 2) three holes, 3) six holes, 4) nine holes, 5) twelve holes were covered. A combination of two baffles of same overall size is used. The flow Reynolds number is ranged from 28,900 to 70,100. The placement of baffles augments the overall heat transfer greatly by combining both jet impingement and the boundary layer separation. The present results show that the average Nusselt number distribution is strongly dependent on number of holes in the baffle plates, i.e., the average Nusselt number increases with increasing number of holes. The friction factor decreases also with increasing the number of holes. however. its value increases with increasing the Reynolds number.

  • Experimental and numerical analysis on the heat transfer behaviors and the associated frictional loss in a rectangular channel with two inclined perforated baffles($\;5^{\circ}$) mounted on the bottom plate has been systematically performed. The parametric effects of perforated baffles (3, 6, 9 holes) and flow Reynolds number on heat transfer characteristics of the heated target surface are explored. A combination of two baffles of same overall size was considered and the flow Reynolds number for this study is varied between 28,900 and 61,800. Comparisons of the experimental data with the numerical results by commercial code CFX 5.7 are made. As for the investigation of heat transfer behaviors on local Nusselt number with the two baffles installed at $x/D_h=0.8\;and\;x/D_h=8.0$, it is evident that there exist an optimum perforation density to maximize heat transfer coefficients; i.e., the maximum Nusselt number decreases with increasing number of holes.

  • A flow induced mechanical vibration and acoustic resonance should be considered at design stage because they are mainly occurred in the tube bank of boiler. Acoustic resonance is occurred when the vortex shedding frequency of tube bank coincides with the acoustic natural frequency of the cavity. Effective solution to avoid acoustic resonance is installing acoustic baffles in the tube banks parallelly inside of the flow cavity. Thus, location and number of acoustic baffles should be exactly calculated to eliminate the acoustic resonance. This paper presents case study of acoustic resonance due to inappropriate number and location of acoustic baffles. Measured frequency and mode in the study is verified by FEM acoustic modal analysis. The number and location of acoustic baffles to avoid acoustic resonance are calculated by using FEM acoustic modal analysis.

  • In the present study, a numerical simulations are investigated in a stirred solid/liquid system by using Eulerian multi-phase model. The transient flow field of liquid phase and distribution of solid particles are predicted in stirred tanks consisting of 4-pitched paddles impeller and baffles. The effects of number and width of baffles on the mixing time and the quality of solid suspension in a stirred tank are presented numerically. The result shows that the mixing time decreases as the width and number of baffles increase.

  • From the results of tracer test for the existing chlorine contactor in Y water treatment plant, $T_{10}$ and $T_{10}$/T were calculated as 130 min and 0.16, respectively. Therefore it required the modification schemes for improving hydraulic efficiency, surrogated by T10 and $T_{10}$/T, and disinfection performance. In this study, in order to reduce dead zone within contactor, the installation of porous baffles in the near of each corner was suggested and verified using transient CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) simulation technique and tracer tests on dynamic condition. From the results of simulation and tracer tests, it was revealed that porous baffles installed have been effective to reduce dead zone within contactor, and increase plug flow fraction.

  • A large majority of clearwell must be modified with maintaining the present baffles since they were underground built with the material like concrete. Therefore it is unreasonable to apply the previous research in clearwell modification which is studied with the assumption that distance between baffles is constant. In this study, internal short-circuiting estimation method (ISEM), which has the advantage of being applied at any condition, is applied to evaluate modification of A clearwell and modify B and C clerwell which have unusual characteristics. After analyzing the hydraulic efficiency at current state, modifications, where baffles, intra basins and diffuser walls are additionally installed, are considered and evaluate using ISEM. And the effect of intra basin and diffuser wall on $T_{10}/T$ is estimated and application feasibility of ISEM is evaluated. The improvement of intra basins is almost same with that of baffles. Also, short-circuiting in effluent zone can be reduced with the same level of channel zone if intra basin is added in effluent zone. However, effect range is restricted to the next channel zone. Diffuser wall can obtain the lower ISI than minimum ISI of cases where baffles and intra basins are installed. Therefore, additional improvement of $T_{10}/T$ value can be expected after $T_{10}/T$ value converges maximum only using baffles

  • Storage tank filled with fluid has unique dynamic characteristics compared to general structures, due to the interaction between fluid and structure. The oscillation of the fluid surface caused by external forces is called sloshing, which occurs in moving vehicles with contained liquid masses, such as trucks, railroad cars, aircrafts, and liquid missles. In this study, the evaluation method for the reduction of sloshing, the optimized size and location of wing and diaphragm baffles are suggested based on the experimental results. The experimental device can simulate the translation motion. A rectangular tank and various baffles are fabricated to study on the sloshing characteristics. The forces measured using the load cell at tank wall and those are compared with each other through the Fourier transformation for various conditions. The study of the sloshing of the rectangular tank equipped with baffles is conducted under the same conditions with non-baffled rectangular tank experiment. From the experimental results, the sloshing reduction effect by the baffles is observed. In conclusion in case of diaphragm baffles, the optimized size ratio of the width of baffle to the water height is 0.44 and the installation location has no effect to the damping of sloshing. In case of wing baffles, the optimized size ratio of the width of baffle to the length of a rectangular tank is 0.1 and the optimized location ratio of the baffle to the water height is 0.9.

  • Photovoltaic thermal (PVT) collectors are devices that simultaneously produce electricity and heat. Research on conventional air-type PVT collector focuses on installing baffles to enhance the collector's thermal performance. However, the baffles have pressure drop inside the collector which degrades the thermal performance. Thus, it is necessary to design baffles to smoothen the flow inside the air-type PVT collector. Alternatively, installing perforated baffles in air-type PVT collectors can reduce the collector weight, but parameters such as the diameter of the perforated holes and the height of the perforated plates should be considered. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to analyze thermal characteristics of each variable of perforated baffles installed inside air-type PVT collector. For this purpose, the uniformity of air flow in the collector was compared through NX program, and the resultant heat gain and thermal efficiency of the air-type PVT collector were compared and analyzed. Therefore, the main aim of this study was to analyze thermal characteristics of each variable (Baffle angle, length, height, pitch, perforated ratio) of perforated baffles installed inside air-type PVT collector. For this purpose, the uniformity of air flow in the collector was compared through CFD program, and the resultant heat gain and thermal efficiency of the air-type PVT collector were compared and analyzed. As a result, the maximum outlet temperature was increased by 1.45 times and the heat gain was increased by 193.8 Wth, depending on the perforated baffle plate, compared to the collector without the baffle. The heat transfer performance showed that the maximum internal velocity was 1.61 times higher and the Reynolds number was 1.06 times higher depending on the parameters of the baffle plate.
