  • This study was carried out to examine the effect of Red LED (660 nm) and fluorescent lamp for night break (NB) treatments of each 3 hours (22:30-01:30), 4 hours (22:00-02:00) and 5 hours (21:30-:02:30) per day for 53 days on flower bud initiation and growth in Chrysanthemum cv. 'Baekma' and cv. 'Jinba'. The days to flower budding after short-day treatment in 'Baekma' was longer at fluorescent lamp 4 hr (21.0 days) and 5 hr (20.5 days) NB, and it was shorter at Red LED 3 hr (14.2 days). The days to flowering after short-day treatment in 'Baekma' was longer at fluorescent lamp 4 hr (54.0 days), 5 hr (53.5 days) NB, and Red LED 5 hr (53.3 days), and it was shortest at Red LED 3 hr (50.2 days) NB treatment among all treatments. The days to flower budding after short-day treatment of 'Jinba' was longer at fluorescent lamp 4 hr (20.6 days) and was shorter at Red LED 3 hr (14.1 days) among all treatments. Similarly, the days to flowering after short-day treatment of 'Jinba' was longer at fluorescent lamp 4 hr (55.3 days) and was shortest at Red LED 3 hr (50.2 days) among all treatments. Therefore, inhibition of flower bud initiation was the most effective under fluorescent lamp 4 hr treatment. The length of cut flower of 'Baekma' was increased by fluorescent lamp 4 hr, 5 hr, and Red LED 5 hr, but of 'Jinba' was longer at LED 4 hr and 5 hr treatment. The weight of cut flower of 'Baekma' was heaviest at fluorescent lamp 5 hr treatment and was at Red LED 5hr treatment for 'Jinba' even though there was not statistically significant difference between 'Baekma' and 'Jinba'. Consequently, under fluorescent lamp 4 hr for night break was the most effective on flower bud initiation, flowering inhibition and cut-flower characteristics in 'Baekma' and 'Jinba'.

  • The objective of study was carried out to find a proper entrance date for breaking dormancy depending on cutting and entrance date into greenhouse investigating plant growth and flowering characteristics of chrysanthemum 'Baekma'. Days to visible bud formation and days to flowering were increased as cutting date was delayed. The flowering rate of cutting on September 18 was 100% while cutting on October 30 did not induce flower bud formation. Flower characteristics were surveyed after 'Baekma' and 'Jinba' rooted cuttings were planted on September 10. Branching formation rate of 'Baekma' was gradually increased as entrance date was delayed while that of 'Jinba' was about 70-80% regardless of entrance date. Lethality of 'Baekma' moving into greenhouse on December 20 was 1.5% by cold injury. 'Jinba' started to die on November 10 by cold injury and lethality of 'Jinba' moving into greenhouse on December 20 was 21.7%. Thus, lethality of 'Jinba' was about 5-14 times higher than that of 'Baekma'. Days to visible bud formation and days to flowering were decreased as entrance date was delayed in chrysanthemum 'Baekma'. Days to visible bud formation of entrance date on November 10 and December 10 were 67.9 and 50.3, respectively. On the other hand, that of 'Jinba' was increased until entrance date on December 10 and decreased on December 20. Based on these results, it was suggested that dormancy of 'Baekma' was started at late September and completed at late October.

  • This study was conducted to enhance the stem firmness of standard chrysanthemum 'Baekma' bred in Korea for commercial quality improvement and inhibition of stem breaking during transportation through foliar spray with calcium agents. Calcium agent screening 'Baekma' was examined using $CaCl_2{\cdot}2H_2O$, $Ca(NO_3)_2{\cdot}4H_2O$, and OS-Ca (natural liquid calcium compounds extracted from oyster shell) depending on each concentration (0, 0.001, 0.01, 0.1, and 1.0%, respectively). All calcium agents sprayed with 1.0% caused chemical injury such as stem bending or leaf burn. OS-Ca also showed more sensitive response to chemical injury than the other calcium agents because OS-Ca was absorbed very well by 'Baekma' leaves. Maximum stem firmness measured during the final harvest was greater in OS-Ca than in the other calcium agents. Especially, maximum stem firmness was greatest in 0.01% OS-Ca. However, elastic strength and maximum bending stress were greater in 0.001% OS-Ca than in the others. Thus, OS-Ca ranged from 0.005 to 0.05%, which did not show any chemical injury, was finally selected as the first candidate for hardening the stem of 'Baekma'. The next experiment using OS-Ca was conducted with the concentrations of 0, 0.005, 0.01, and 0.05%, respectively. From the results, 0.05% OS-Ca showed better plant growth and parameters such as plant height, stem diameter (upper and middle part), the number of leaves, and dry weights of each part than the other concentrations of OS-Ca and control. As for stem firmness depending on OS-Ca concentration, the Ca content within stem, maximum firmness, elastic strength, and maximum bending stress of stem in 'Baekma' sprayed with 0.05% OS-Ca showed the highest values among all the treatments and it turned out to be very high level of significance between control and OS-Ca treatments. However, the area and percentage of the inside cavity within horizontal stem section in 'Baekma' did not show any significance between any treatments including control. Thus, stem firmness of 'Baekma' did not show any correlation with the inside cavity area of stem. In conclusion, we recommend foliar sprays with 0.05% OS-Ca at vegetative growth stage to enhance stem firmness of 'Baekma' during transportation.

  • This study was carried out to investigate conveyance environment during shipping export to Japan and the optimum pre-treatment of cut Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Baekma'. Shipping from Korea to Japan, which usually takes three to five days, requires keeping the flower at the ideal temperature. When inspection took place in Japan, the ideal temperature was lost and deterioration began. Once the ideal temperature is lost, deterioration takes place. The results of this work showed that vase life was extended by treatment Chrysal RVB and NaOCl compared to the control (distilled water), and Chrysal RVB was used to maintain the flower from bud to full bloom. Bacterial growth was not observed after pretreatment with NaOCl or $ClO_2$. However, $ClO_2$ pre-treatment was observed to affect the early growth period of the bacteria. The chlorophyll content was the highest after Chrysal RVB or NaOCl pretreatment compared to the other treatments. Therefore, these results support pretreatment with NaOCl and Chrysal RVB of Dendranthema grandiflorum 'Baekma' for export to Japan.

  • The objectives of this study were to analyze chemical the water quality related to the fish community and to evaluate the ecosystem health based on the faunal composition and guild structure in 2007 in Baekma River. Mean concentrations of biological oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were 2.8 and $4.0mg\;L^{-1}$, respectively and total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP) were $5.0mg\;L^{-1}$ and $158{\mu}g\;L^{-1}$, which is indicating that the river is in an eutrophic state. Especially, organic pollution and eutrophication occurred in the downstream reach of Baekma River. A total of 19 fish species were collected during the study and the most dominant species was Opsariichthys uncirostris amurensis accounted 48% of the total abundances. The proportion of sensitive species was low (2.3%), compared with that of tolerant species (71.8%). These results suggest that tolerant species and the biotic quality of the fish community was severely degraded. According to the multi-metric model, the Index of Biological Integrity (IBI), the mean model value of the fish community in Baekma River was estimated as 14.8 indicating a "poor" condition. The minimum values of the IBI were observed in the downstreams, and this was mainly attributed to chemical pollutions of nutrients (N, P) and organic matters.

  • The research was carried out a solution to prevent the breakage of stem resulted from stem cavity in the Dendranthema grandiflorum Ramat. 'Baekma'. Stem cavity occurred in the lower parts of stem for about 5 cm long as the stem grew to 20 cm, and the breakage increased to about 60 cm as the stem grew to 80 cm. Plant height, stem diameter, and flower stalk length were the highest in the planting density of $11cm{\times}11cm$. The light interception by plants increased as the planting density decreased (47, 99 and 143%). The strength and hardness values were the greatest, $567kg{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ and $1,339kg{\cdot}cm^{-2}$ in the planting density of $11cm{\times}11cm$. Plant height and plant weight increased in the foliage fertilization of one time, but the plants in the control flowered earlier. The strength and hardness increased in the foliage fertilization treatments and the greatest in the treatment of one time application of $60mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ Silicate fertilization. The Si content of stems increased as the fertilization concentration and treatment time increased. The Si content in $30mg{\cdot}L^{-1}$ silicate treated twice was two times as high as that of the control.

  • To investigate the effect of night minimum temperature on growth and flower development in standard type chrysanthemum 'Baekina' during winter season, morphological characteristics and physiological disorders were compared with standard chrysanthemum 'Jinba'. Although the flower budding of 'Baekma' was delayed about 2 to the days compared with 'Jinba', the days to flowering of 54 to 59 showed no difference between the two cultivars. Flowering was delayed as minimum temperature decreased at night. The length and weight of cut flower decreased in the two cultivars as minimum temperature increased at night. In 'Baekina', the number of petals at 16 showed the highest values among other temperatures. Whereas there was no significant difference among the temperature treatments in 'Jinba'. Rosette occured only in 'Baekma', and the ratio was 11.1% at 14, 55.6% at 16, and 56.1% at 18. The inhibition of flower budding appeared only at 14 in the ratio of 17.3% in 'Baekma' and 4.0% in 'Jinba'.

  • This research was performed to investigate the effect of light source and light quality in night break treatment on the growth and flowering of standard chrysanthemum. It was processed 4 hours (22:00-02:00) night break using LED 590, 610, 630, 660, 680nm and fluorescent lamp (mixed light of 480+540+610nm) in standard chrysanthemum 'Baekma' and 'Jinba' for 40 days from transplanting. The days to flower budding from short-day treatment of 'Baekma' were the longgest at fluorescent treatment (21.3 days) and were the shorttest at LED 590nm treatment (15.8 days) among all treatments. The days to flower budding from short-day treatment of 'Jinba' was longger with 18.0 days, 17.8 days, and 17.7 days at the fluorescent, LED 610nm, and 660nm treatments. And it was the shortest with 15.1 days in LED 590nm treatment. Similarly, the days to flowering from short-day treatment of 'Baekma' was the longgest with 56.9 days at fluorescent treatment, and was the shorttest in 51.6 days about LED 590 nm treatment. The days to flowering from short-day treatment of 'Jinba' was longer at fluorescent (56.0 days) and LED 660nm (56.7 days) treatments and was shortest at LED 590nm (52.9 days) among all treatments. Therefore, inhibition of flower bud initiation and flowering were the most effective under fluorescent treatment in case of 'Baekma', and fluorescent and LED 660nm treatments in case of 'Jinba'. The length and weight of cut flower of 'Baekma' and 'Jinba' were most excellent in fluorescent treatment in which the floral differentiation suppression effect was the best. Consequently, as to the growth and flowering of standard chrysanthemum, the treatment which was suitable as the light source and light quality for night break is regarded as the fluorescent lamp, and also under LED 660nm up to a certain level.
