  • In this study, in order to enhance the joint capacity between the existing reinforced concrete (R/C) frame and the reinforcement member, we proposed a novel concept of Internal Composite Seismic Strengthening Method (CSSM) for seismic retrofit of existing domestic medium-to-low-rise R/C buildings. The Internal CSSM rehabilitation system is a type of strength-enhancing reinforcement systems, to easily increase the ultimate horizontal shear capacity of R/C structures without seismic details in Korea, which show shear collapse mechanism. Two test specimens of full-size two-story R/C frame were fabricated based on an existing domestic R/C building without seismic details, and then retrofitted by using the proposed CSSM seismic system; therefore, one control test specimen and one test specimen reinforced with the CSSM system were used. Pseudo-dynamic testing was carried out to evaluate seismic strengthening effects, and the seismic response characteristics of the proposed system, in terms of the maximum shear force, response story drift, and seismic damage degree compared with the control specimen (R/C bare frame). Experiment results indicated that the proposed CSSM reinforcement system, internally installed to the existing R/C frame, effectively enhanced the horizontal shear force, resulting in reduced story drift of R/C buildings even under a massive earthquake.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects that body composition, nutrient intake, and biochemical indices have on skin status, as well as their associations with skin health status, by assessing 44 female university students. The subjects were classified into 3 groups according to skin sensitivity: sensitive skin (n=11), slightly sensitive skin (n=24), and normal skin (n=9). The study included anthropometric measurements and body composition analyses, dietary intake evaluations, blood chemical analyses, and skin health status assessments. Based on % body fat, the results indicated the subjects were moderately obese (29.6%). Obesity indices were not different among the groups, but the sensitive skin group tended to have higher skinfold thickness. Dry skin was determined as the skin type of all subjects. In the sensitive skin groups, U-zone and T-zone sebum were significantly lower (p<0.05), and spots were significantly higher (p<0.05) than in the normal skin group. In terms of nutrient intakes, the sensitive skin groups consumed significantly lower amounts of P and vitamins A and E (p<0.05). There were no significant differences in serum lipid fractions or total antioxidant status among the groups. In correlation coefficients analysis, skin elasticity had significant negative correlations with subscapular and midaxillary skinfold thickness, body protein, and body minerals (p<0.05). Wrinkling had positive correlations with triceps and thigh skinfold thickness (p<0.05). Skin evenness had negative correlations with energy intake, vitamins A, $B_1,\;B_2$, C, E, niacin, and zinc (p<0.05), as well as folate and P (p<0.01) and vitamin $B_6$ (p<0.001). A similar correlation tendency was observed for spots and nutrient intake, showing negative correlations with vitamins A, $B_6$, and E, as well as folate, Fe, and P. U-zone sebum showed significant positive correlations with serum levels of total cholesterol and triglycerides. From these findings, skin health status appears to be affected by both nutrient intake and body composition. Therefore, having a proper balance between dietary intake and body composition may influence skin health status in females with sensitive skin.

  • Objectives : Genome-wide association studies (GWASs) and meta-analyses indicate that single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the a-1C subunit of the L-type voltage-dependent calcium channel (CACNA1C) gene increase the risk for schizophrenia and bipolar disorders (BDs). We investigated the association between the genetic variants on CACNA1C and schizophrenia and/or BDs in the Korean population. Methods : A total of 582 patients with schizophrenia, 336 patients with BDs consisting of 179 bipolar I disorder (BD-I) and 157 bipolar II disorder (BD-II), and 502 healthy controls were recruited. Based on previous results from other populations, three SNPs (rs10848635, rs1006737, and rs4765905) were selected and genotype-wise association was evaluated using logistic regression analysis under additive, dominant and recessive genetic models. Results : rs10848635 showed a significant association with schizophrenia (p=0.010), the combined schizophrenia and BD group (p=0.018), and the combined schizophrenia and BD-I group (p=0.011). The best fit model was dominant model for all of these phenotypes. The association remained significant after correction for multiple testing in schizophrenia and the combined schizophrenia and BD-I group. Conclusion : We identified a possible role of CACNA1C in the common susceptibility of schizophrenia and BD-I. However no association trend was observed for BD-II. Further efforts are needed to identify a specific phenotype associated with this gene crossing the current diagnostic categories.

  • Energy consumption is increased by rapid industrialization. As a result, climate change is accelerating due to the increase in CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. Therefore, a shift in the energy paradigm is required. Hydrogen is in the spotlight as a part of that. Currently 95% of hydrogen is fossil fuel-based reforming hydrogen which is accompanied by CO2 emissions. This is called gray hydrogen, if the CO2 is captured and emission of CO2 is reduced, it can be converted into blue hydrogen. There are 3 technologies to capture CO2: absorption, adsorption and membrane technology. In order to select CO2 capture technology, the analysis of the exhaust gas should be carried out. The concentration of CO2 in the flue gas from the hydrogen production process is higher than 20%if water is removed as well as the emission scale is classified as small and medium. So, the application of the membrane technology is more advantageous than the absorption. In addition, if LNG cold energy can be used for low temperature CO2 capture system, the CO2/N2 selectivity of the membrane is higher than room temperature CO2 capture and enabling an efficient CO2 capture process. In this study, we will analyze the flue gas from hydrogen production process and discuss suitable CO2 capture technology for it.

  • This study attempted to derive high-risk groups of adolescent status delinquency(ASD) and to identify related factors. This study was conducted with 1,979 adolescents enrolled in the first year of high school, data from the 7th year of the 4th grade panel of the Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey. Classification and regression tree analysis method was used. The ASD group was 264, which was 13.3% of the total. The high-risk group for ASD is that is male who has a low perception of positive parenting style. Positive parenting style was found to be the most important influencing factor in ASD, followed by gender, emotional problems, relationship with teacher, and achievement value. In order to prevent ASD, it is necessary to develop a parenting education program and an intervention program specialized for male adolescents. In addition, interventions that comprehensively deal with emotional problems such as depression and social withdrawal are required, going beyond the previous interventions that focused on aggression. In particular, it has been found that relationship with teachers is the most important influencing factor in the school environment. Through education on the causes and consequences of ASD and training on counseling techniques, the promotion of relationships with teachers will act as a protective factor to prevent ASD.

  • Wetlands, defined as lands periodically inundated or exposed during the year, are crucial for sustaining biodiversity and filtering environmental pollutants. The importance of mapping and monitoring their topographical changes is therefore paramount. This study focuses on the topographical variations at the Incheon River estuary wetland post-restoration, noting a lack of adequate prior measurements. Using a multi-temporal Sentinel-1 dataset from October 2014 to March 2023, we mapped long-term variations in water bodies and detected topographical change anomalies using a pixel-frequency approach. Our analysis, based on 196 Sentinel-1 acquisitions from an ascending orbit, revealed significant topography changes. Since 2020, employing the pixel-frequency technique, we observed area increases of +0.0195, 0.0016, 0.0075, and 0.0163 km2 in water level sections at depths of 2-3 m, 1-2 m, 0-1 m, and less than 0 m, respectively. These findings underscore the effectiveness of the wetland restoration efforts in the area.

  • In recent times, semantic image segmentation methods using deep learning models have been widely used for monitoring changes in surface attributes using remote sensing imagery. To enhance the performance of various UNet-based deep learning models, including the prominent UNet model, it is imperative to have a sufficiently large training dataset. However, enlarging the training dataset not only escalates the hardware requirements for processing but also significantly increases the time required for training. To address these issues, transfer learning is used as an effective approach, enabling performance improvement of models even in the absence of massive training datasets. In this paper we present three transfer learning models, UNet-ResNet50, UNet-VGG19, and CBAM-DRUNet-VGG19, which are combined with the representative pretrained models of VGG19 model and ResNet50 model. We applied these models to building extraction tasks and analyzed the accuracy improvements resulting from the application of transfer learning. Considering the substantial impact of learning rate on the performance of deep learning models, we also analyzed performance variations of each model based on different learning rate settings. We employed three datasets, namely Kompsat-3A dataset, WHU dataset, and INRIA dataset for evaluating the performance of building extraction results. The average accuracy improvements for the three dataset types, in comparison to the UNet model, were 5.1% for the UNet-ResNet50 model, while both UNet-VGG19 and CBAM-DRUNet-VGG19 models achieved a 7.2% improvement.

  • In this study, a new triplex real-time quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (tqRT-PCR) assay was developed for the rapid and differential detection of three feline viral pathogens including feline calicivirus (FCV), feline herpesvirus 1 (FHV-1), and influenza A virus (IAV) in a single reaction. The assay specifically amplified three targeted viral genes with a detection limit of below 10 copies/reaction. The assay showed high repeatability and reproducibility, with intra- and inter-assay coefficients of variation of less than 1%. Based on the diagnostic results of the assay using 120 clinical samples obtained from cats with feline respiratory disease complex (FRDC)-suspected signs, the prevalence of FCV, FHV-1, or IAV was 43.3%, 22.5%, or 0%, respectively, indicating that the diagnostic sensitivity was comparable or superior to those of previously reported monoplex qRT-PCR/qPCR assays. The dual infection rate for FCV and FHV-1 was 8.3%. These results indicate that FCV and FHV-1 are widespread and that co-infection with FCV and FHV-1 frequently occur in the Korean cat population. The developed tqRT-PCR assay will serve as a promising tool for etiological and epidemiological studies of these three bacterial pathogens, and the prevalence data for three feline viruses obtained in this study will contribute to expanding knowledge about the epidemiology of FRDC in the current Korean cat population.

  • This study investigates the geomorphic changes and Bed Relief Index of the river downstream of the Yeongju Dam by Nays2DH, a two-dimensional numerical model, in order to grasp the dynamics of the downstream river while applying various flow patterns such as pulse discharge. It shows that the geomorphic and the bed elevations changes are the largest under the condition of the normalized pulse discharge. The total change in the riverbed is 29.88 m for uniform flow, 27.46 m for normalized hydrograph, 29.63 m for pulse flow and 31.87 m for pulse flow with normalized hydrograph which result in the largest variation in scour and deposition. The Bed Relief Index (BRI) increases with time under conditions of uniform flow, pulse flow and pulse flow with normalized hydrograph. However, BRI increased rapidly until 30 hrs after the peak flow (14 hrs), but decreased from 56 hrs under the condition of normalized hydrograph. Therefore, the condition of normalized hydrograph gives greater dynamics than the condition of a single flood or constant flow, and the dynamics increase downstream than upstream, resulting in an effect on improving the environment of the river downstream of the dam.

  • Currently, with the development of technologies, X-ray examinations for medical examinations at hospital is increasing. This study was conducted to help reduce radiation exposure by measuring the exposure dose received by pediatric patients and the spatial dose of the X-ray room. Dosimeters were installed in the eyeball, thyroid gland, breast, gonads and 4 directions at a distance of 30 cm, 40 cm, 50 cm from the phantom. The dose was measured ten times each, before, and after the application of the bismuth shield under the examination conditions of the head, chest, and abdomen of pediatric patients. Under the condition of head examination, when a shielding was applied, the dose reduction rate was 68.58% for the eyeball, 72.88% for the thyroid, 84.2% for the breast, and 72.36% for the gonad. The chest examination showed reductions of 19.56% eyeball, 56.98% thyroid, 1.21% breast, and 0.68% gonad. The abdominal examination showed reduction rates of 2.6% eyeball, 10.67% thyroid, 19.85% breast, and 82.02% gonad. Spatial dose decreased by 62.25% at 30 cm, 61.16% at 40 cm, and 68.68% at 50 cm. When the bismuth shield was applied, there was a decrease in dose across all examinations, as well as a reduction in spatial dose. Continued research on the use of bismuth shields will help radiological technologists achieve their goal of dose reduction.
