Major Sources of Sodium Intake of the Korean Population at Prepared Dish Level - Based on the KNHANES 2008 & 2009 - (한국인의 나트륨 섭취 급원 음식 및 섭취 양상 - 2008-2009 국민건강영양조사 자료에 근거 -)

  • We attempted to define the sources of sodium intake for the Korean population at prepared dish level to provide a basis for developing sustainable nutrition policies and feasible programs for sodium intake reduction. Dietary intake data from 2008 and 2009 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey was used in the analysis for sodium intake sources. Sodium intake from individual dish consumed by each subject was calculated and used in delineating major sodium sources at dish and dish group level for sub-populations of different sex and age. Also, sodium intake was compared between eaters and non-eaters of some specific dish groups with considerable contribution to total sodium intake. The number of subjects included in the analysis was 18,022 and mean sodium intake was 4,600 mg/capita/day. Major sources of sodium intake at dish group level were in the following order: kimchi (1125 mg, 24.5%), noodles (572 mg, 12.4%), soups (488 mg, 10.6%), stews (399 mg, 8.7%), and cooked rice (284 mg, 6.2%). The magnitude of contribution to total sodium intake by soups and stews was different by age group. Sodium intake difference between eaters and non-eaters was much larger for kimchi group (2,343 mg for male, 1,452 mg for female) than for soups or stews. Interaction between consumption of aforementioned specific dish groups and age was highly significant (p < 0.0005) for both sexes. This study revealed an importance of having not only the control over sodium content of foods/dishes, but also the customized approach for different groups of population to accomplish an appreciable reduction in sodium intake.

Cost-benefit Analysis of Sodium Intake Reduction Policy in Korea (나트륨 섭취량 감소 정책의 비용편익 분석)

  • It is well established that excessive sodium intake is related to a higher incidence of chronic diseases such as hypertension, stroke, coronary heart disease, cardiovascular disease and gastric cancer. Although the upper limit of the current sodium intake guideline by WHO is set at 2,000 mg/day for adults, sodium intake of Koreans is well over 4,700 mg/capita/day implying an urgent need to develop and implement sodium intake reduction policy at the national level. This study investigated the cost-effectiveness of the sodium intake reduction policy, for the first time, in Korea. Analyses were performed using most recent and representative data on national health insurance statistics, healthcare utilization, employment information, disease morbidity/mortality, etc. The socioeconomic benefits of the policy, resulting from reduced morbidity of those relevant diseases, included lower medical expenditures, transportation costs, caregiver cost for inpatients and income losses. The socioeconomic benefits from diminished mortality included reductions in earning losses and welfare losses caused by early deaths. It is estimated that the amount of total benefits of reducing sodium intake from 4.7 g to 3.0 g is 12.6 trillion Korean Won; and the size of its cost is 149 billion Won. Assuming that the effect of sodium intake reduction would become gradually evident over a 5-year period, the implied rate of average return to the sodium reduction policy is 7,790% for the following 25 years, suggesting a very high cost-effectiveness. Accordingly, development and implementation of a mid-to-long term plan for a consistent sodium intake reduction policy is extremely beneficial and well warranted.

The effect of a low-sodium label on acceptability and perceived saltiness intensity of a dipping sauce for fried pork cutlets (저염 표시가 포크커틀릿 소스의 짠맛 인식과 기호도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of a low-sodium label on acceptability and sensory attributes of a dipping sauce for fried pork cutlets. Two sauce samples, CON (normal sodium level) and LOW-Na (50% sodium level), were evaluated. Consumers (n=77) rated expectations and actual perception of overall liking, purchase intent, and intensities of saltiness, sweetness, sourness, fruit flavor, and degree of flavor balance without and with a carrier (fried pork cutlet) in blind and informed settings. In the informed test, CON labeled as Low-Na (PLACEBO) was additionally tested to examine the placebo effect of information. The low-sodium labeling significantly increased the expected liking and purchase intent, but decreased the expected saltiness. However, the label did not influence actual liking or purchase intent. A significant decrease in actual saltiness was observed only in Low-Na, not in PLACEBO, indicating the label is influential only when actual perception matched the expectation.

  • 본 연구는 도시지역 1개 초등학교 5 6학년과 농촌지역 일개 군의 2개 초등학교 5 6학년을 대상으로 도시와 농촌 초등학교 5 6학년의 변비 유병률을 파악하고, 이와 관련된 배변행태, 식습관 및 운동 습관 요인, 스트레스 등을 분석하여, 학생들이 바람직하고 올바른 생활습관을 갖도록 하고 학생들의 변비 증상을 개선하고 예방하여 건강증진을 도모하는 기초자료로 활용하고자 시도된 단면조사연구이다. 연구대상자는 임의 추출방법에 의하여 선정된 3개 초등학교 5 6학년 재학생 총 585명을 대상으로 하였다. 연구방법은 2009년 10월에 임의로 선정된 3개 학교의 보건선생님을 통하여 연구대상자에게 설문지를 배포하여 대상자 스스로 기입하도록 하였다. 본 연구의 결과로 자가보고에 의한 변비의 유병률은 전체 22.1%로 남학생 16.9%, 여학생 27.0% 이었으며, 주중 3회 미만의 배변횟수를 변비로 정의하였을 경우 변비 유병률은 15.7%로 남학생 11.6%, 여학생 19.6%로 여학생의 변비 발생률이 높았다. 거주지역별로는 농촌 지역에 거주하는 대상자가 도시 지역에 거주하는 대상자보다 변비 발생이 높은 것으로 나타났으며 변비발생과 운동습관과의 관계에 있어서는 운동을 하지 않는 대상자가 변비 유병율이 높게 나타났다. 변비 분류에 의한 배변습관에서는 변비군에서 배변 시간이 10분 이상이 많았으며, 시험기간 중 변비경향 또는 변을 보지 못 한다가 정상군보다 높게 나타났다. 또한, 변비군의 치료관련 행태에서는 18.3%가 변비치료를 위해 변비약을 복용한 경험이 있는 것으로 조사되었으며, 배변 형태에 변화가 있을 경우 상담자로는 가족 또는 혼자 판단하는 경우가 대부분이었다. 변비 분류에 의한 배변 관련 증상의 분포는 변비군에서 항문통증 경험, 항문 출혈 경험 등이 정상군보다 높게 나타났다. 주중 3회 미만의 배변횟수를 변비로 정의 하였을 경우와 배변 관련 증상의 분포는 변비군에서 항문통증 경험, 배변 후 상쾌하지 못함 등이 정상군보다 높게 나타났다. 학교에서의 배변여부는 변비군에서 학교에서 배변을 하는 비율이 정상군보다 높았다. 변비여부를 종속변수로 하여 변비발생에 영향을 미치는 요인을 분석한 결과 성, 학년, 거주지역에서 변비발생의 위험요인으로 도출되었다. 주 3회 미만의 배변횟수를 변비라고 정의할 경우, 변비발생에 영향을 미치는 요인을 분석한 결과 성, 학년, 모직장 유무, 운동이 변비발생의 위험요인으로 도출되었다. 본 연구에서는 초등학교 5 6학년을 대상으로 배변 행태, 식습관, 스트레스, 학교에서의 배변습관 등을 조사해 본 결과 상당수 학생들의 배변 실태가 좋지 않은 것을 알 수 있었다. 바람직하지 않은 식습관, 운동 부족, 과다한 스트레스 등은 학생들의 변비 발생의 위험 요인이 될 수 있으므로 변비의 발생을 예방하기 위해서는 매일 적절한 운동을 하고 인스턴트음식과 패스트푸드섭취 등을 줄이고 올바른 생활습관 및 스트레스 관리 등이 필요하며 부모들의 자녀에 대한 관심이 더욱 필요하다. 이를 위해서 초등학교부터 변비 예방을 위한 체계적인 프로그램을 만들고, 실시하여야 하며 또한 보건교육을 통하여 건강한 생활습관을 습득하고 변비를 예방하는 노력이 필요하다 하겠다.

  • 이 연구는 음주 관련 요인을 일반적 특성과 사회-경제적, 건강행태 측면에서 규명하기 위하여 일개 광역시에 거주하는 만 19세 이상 남녀를 대상으로 한국 갤럽의 표준조사로 2007년 7월 30일부터 2달간 시행하였고, 전화 설문조사에 참여한 총 1,013명을 대상으로 일반적 사항, 건강 행태관련 설문지를 이용하여 관련 요인들을 추출하였고, 음주도를 산출하였다. 연구대상자의 지난 1년간 음주여부를 결과 변수로 하는 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과 연령에 따른 분류에서 19-29세와 30-39세에서 음주에 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고, 가계수입에 따른 분류에서는 300~499만원과 500만원 이상에서 음주에 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 변수별 95% 신뢰구간에서는 유의하게 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 연구대상자의 지난 한 달간 음주여부를 결과변수로 하는 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과 성별에 따른 분류에서 여성의 경우 음주에 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고, 연령에 따른 분류에서 19-29세와 40-49세에서 음주에 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 가계수입에 따른 분류에서는 300~499만원과 500만원 이상이 음주에 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고, 흡연에 따른 분류에서 현재 흡연의 경우 음주에 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고, 스트레스 여부에 따른 분류에서 대단히 많이 느낌과, 조금 느끼는 편임의 경우 음주에 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 다른 변수들의 경우 95% 신뢰구간에서는 유의하게 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 연구대상자의 주2회 이상 음주여부를 결과변수로 하는 로지스틱 회귀분석 결과 성별에 따른 분류에서 여성의 경우 음주에 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고, 직업에서 가정주부, 학생의 경우 음주에 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났고, 흡연에서 현재 흡연과 과거 흡연에서 음주에 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났으며, 다른 변수들의 경우 95% 신뢰구간에서는 유의하게 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 연구 결과를 종합해 볼 때, 직업분류에서 가정주부와 학생의 경우 음주에 유의하게 영향을 미치는 것으로 판단된다. 적정 섭취 알코올 기준이 남, 여가 다르게 제시되고 있기 때문에 성별에 따른 비교분석자료를 통하여 남, 여 적정 음주 기준에 따른 일반적 특성과 사회적 특성 및 건강행태와의 관련성에 대한 후속 연구가 필요하다고 생각된다.

Effects of honeybee (Apis Mellifera L.) venom injection on the growth performance and hematological characteristics of pigs (봉독이 자돈의 성장 및 혈액성상 변화에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to evaluate effects of honeybee venom injection (VI) collected using bee venom collector compared to that of bee venom accupuncture (VA) on the body weight gain, growth rate and hematological characteristics of piglets. One hundred sixty two piglets from 15 sows were allocated in to three groups; honeybee venom subcutaneous injection groups (97 piglets from 9 sows), honeybee venom accupuncture -treated group (31 piglets from 3 sows), and non -treated control group and 30 days after birth. Honeybee venom subcutaneous injection groups divided by a syringeful; group A (0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0 mg ), group B (1.0, 1.0, 1.0, 1.0 rug), and group C (1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5 mg). During 60 days experiment, weight gain and survivability in VI and VA treatment of pigs were higher compared with control. Survival rate during the experiment period was 96.8% in group C, 93.2 % in VA and 86.7 % in control. Weight gain and survivability were effected by VI and VA. WBC, RBC, lymphocytes, monocytes, serum total protein, and albumin concentration were not affected by VI and VA. Serum IgG concentration of VI and VA treatments were greater than that of control. In conclusion, VI and VA were effective for improving growth performance and to increase the concentrations of blood Ig G in growing pigs. No statistical differences were found for VI and VA. These results suggested that the treatment of honeybee venom injection collected using bee venom collector could be used effectively for the increase productivity.

CdS-Titania-Nanotube Composite Films for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production (CdS/Titania-나노튜브 복합 막을 이용한 광촉매적 수소제조)

  • Titania nanotube(TiNT) and CdS sol were synthesized by hydrothermal reaction under strongly basic condition and by precipitation reaction of $Cd(N0_3)_2$ and $Na_2S$ aqueous solutions, respectively. After preparing a series of CdS-TiNT composite films on $F:SnO_2$ conducting glass with variation of the mole ratio (r) of TiNT/(CdS+TiNT), their visible light absorption, photocatalytic activities for hydrogen production, and the photocurrent generation were examined. In general, this CdS-TiNT series showed lower photocatalytic activities and photocurrent generation under Xe light irradiation compared to their counterparts, i.e., CdS-$TiO_2$ particulate series. It appeared that TiNTs are not so effective photocatalyic material in spite of their larger specific surface areas compared to $TiO_2$ nanoparticles, because they indicate a poor crystallinity and less intimate interaction or contact with CdS particles owing to the tubular morphology and an easy agglomeration among themselves.

  • Objectives: The following study was undertaken in order to seek the acupuncture operation method of ${\ll}$Sang Han Lun(傷寒論)${\gg}$ Liu-jing-Bian-Zheng(六經辨證) Methods : Based on the documents quoted in ${\ll}$Sang Han Lun ${\cdot}$ Xu Wen(傷寒雜病論 ${\cdot}$ 序文)${\gg}$ of "Zhang, Zhong-jing(張仲景)", the relativity of the theory of jing-Mai(經脈) and Liu-Jing-Bian-Zheng of convalescence, and from the Liu-jing-Bing(六經病), the origin and implication that caused Yang-Ming-Bing(陽明病) to form was studied on the basis of acupuncture medicine publications and the commentary writing of ${\ll}$Sang Han Lun${\gg}$. Results: 1. ${\ll}$Sang Han Lun${\gg}$ Liu-jing-Bian-Zheng has succeeded and was developed based on Liu-jing-Fen-Zheng(六經分證) of ${\ll}$Su Wen ${\cdot}$ Re Lun(素問 ${\cdot}$ 熱論)${\gg}$. In addition, the summary of Liu-jing-Bing became the general principle of Fen-jing(分經) and Ding-Zheng(定證) that may be applicable to Fenghan(風寒), Wenre(溫熱), Lili and Zabing(雜病). 2. Most commentators of ${\ll}$Sang Han Lun${\gg}$ in the Song, Ming and Ching Dynasties of ${\ll}$Sang Han Lun${\gg}$ interpreted the Yang-Min-Bing in physiological and pathological aspects of Rong-Wei(榮衛) as the disease of the Stomach meridian and Large Intestine meridian. 3. From the Liu-Jing-Bing of ${\ll}$Sang Han Lun${\gg}$, the region of acupuncture treatment of Yang-Min-Bing is treated with the needle from the point of view of Bing-Zheng-Lun-Zhi(辨證論治) with the basis of the important region of acupuncture of the Stomach of meridian ${\cdot}$ Large Intestine of meridian.

Visible Light Driven ZnFe2Ta2O9 Catalyzed Decomposition of H2S for Solar Hydrogen Production

  • Tantalum-containing metal oxides, well known for their efficiency in water splitting and H2 production, have never been used in visible light driven photodecomposition of H2S and H2 production. The present work is an attempt in this direction and investigates their efficiency. A mixed metal oxide, ZnFe2Ta2O9, with the inclusion of Fe2O3 to impart color, was prepared by the conventional ceramic route in single- and double-calcinations (represented as ZnFe2Ta2O9-SC and ZnFe2Ta2O9-DC respectively). The XRD characterization shows that both have identical patterns and reveals tetragonal structure to a major extent and a minor contribution of orthorhombic crystalline system. The UV-visible diffuse reflection spectra demonstrate the intense, coherent and wide absorption of visible light by both the catalysts, with absorption edge at 650 nm, giving rise to a band gap of 1.9 eV. Between the two catalysts, however, ZnFe2Ta2O9-DC has greater absorption in almost the entire wavelength region, which accounts for its strong brown coloration than ZnFe2Ta2O9-SC when viewed by the naked eye. In photocatalysis, both catalysts decompose H2S under visible light irradiation (λ ≥ 420 nm) and produce solar H2 at a much higher rate than previously reported catalysts. Nevertheless, ZnFe2Ta2O9-DC distinguishes itself from ZnFe2Ta2O9-SC by exhibiting a higher efficiency because of its greater light absorption. Altogether, the tantalum-containing mixed metal oxide proves its efficient catalytic role in H2S decomposition and H2 production process also.
