Changes in nocturnal insect communities in forest-dominated landscape relevant to artificial light intensity

  • Background: Artificial light at night has recently been identified as a major factor adversely affecting global insect diversity. Here, we compared the insect diversity in Gwangneung Forest Biosphere Reserve, specifically in the Korea National Arboretum (with no artificial light at night), with that of three nearby urban sites with a gradient of artificial light at night (five locations at each site). We analyzed the effects of the artificial night lighting index, mean annual temperature, and field light intensity (lux) at night on the insect community structure. Results: The urban sites generally exhibited higher species richness and abundance as well as clear indicator species compared with the control site. The size distribution of the collected insects markedly differed between the control and the three urban sites. The abundance of herbivorous and omnivorous insects increased and decreased, respectively, with the increase in light intensity. Species richness of herbivorous and omnivorous insects was likely correlated with the field light intensity at night and artificial night lighting index, respectively. Conclusions: This study demonstrates the association between nighttime environment and marked changes in insect community structure and revealed consequent transition of ecosystem services by changes in trophic group composition.

The effects of LED light quality on ecophysiological and growth responses of Epilobium hirsutum L., a Korean endangered plant, in a smart farm facility

  • Background: Epilobium hirsutum L. is designated as an endangered plant in South Korea located in Asia, due to the destruction of its habitats through the development of wetlands. Therefore, in this study, in order to find a light condition suitable for the growth and ecophysiological responses of Epilobium hirsutum L., those of this plant under treatment with various light qualities in a smart farm were measured. Results: In order to examine the changes in the physiological and growth responses of Epilobium hirsutum L. according to the light qualities, the treatment with light qualities of the smart farm was carried out using the red light: blue light irradiation time ratios of 1:1, 1:1/2, and 1:1/5 and a red light: blue light: white light irradiation time ratio of 1:1:1. As a result, the ecophysiological responses (difference between leaf temperature and atmospheric temperature, transpiration rate, net photosynthetic rate, intercellular CO2 partial pressure, photosynthetic quantum efficiency) to light qualities appeared differently according to the treatments with light qualities. The increase in the blue light ratio increased the difference between the leaf temperature and the atmospheric temperature and the photosynthetic quantum efficiency and decreased the transpiration rate and the intercellular CO2 partial pressure. On the other hand, the white light treatment increased the transpiration rate and intercellular CO2 partial pressure and decreased the temperature difference between the leaf temperature and the ambient temperature and photosynthetic quantum efficiency. Conclusions: The light condition suitable for the propagation by the stolons, which are the propagules of Epilobium hirsutum L., in the smart farm, is red, blue and white mixed light with high net photosynthetic rates and low difference between leaf temperature and atmospheric temperature.

COLOR CHANGES OF PALFIQUE ESTELITE BETWEEN PRE AND POST IRRADIATIONS (Palfique Estelite의 경화전후 색조 변화에 관하여)

  • It is pointed out that the color of composite resin is changing according to it's ploymerization and this color change is a harmful effect for the clinical satisfacion of composite resin restoration. The purpose of this study was to compare the changes of color of newly developed composite resins between before and after exposure of activating light. Five Compostie resins (8 shades) were employed: Palfique Estelite(UL, U, DY, G ; Tokuyama), Photo Clearfil A (US : Kuraray), Photo Clearfil Bright (US ; Kuraray), GC Graft LC(A3 ; GC), Silux Plus(U; 3M), Tristirnulus values of each material were determined before and after curing-light exposure by using a Micro Multi Photometer (MMP-1001, Nihon Denshoku Kogyo). The values were transformed into $L^*\;a^*\;b^*$ system and color changes of the resins were evaluated by the changes of $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values for the individual shades. In addition, the effects of resin thickness and background color on color changes were also studied The finding were as follows: 1. Color changes of $L^*$, $a^*$ and $b^*$ values were recognized due to the light exposure for all products. The $b^*$ values of Palfique Estelite showed negligible changes for all shades. 2. Reconstruction and Elimination of Optical Microscopic Background Using Surface Fitting Method

  • One serious problem among the troubles to identify objects in an optical microscopic image is contour background due to non-uniform light source and various transparency of samples. To solve this problem, this paper proposed an elimination method of the contour background and compensation technique as follows. First, Otsu's optimal thresholding method extracts pixels representing background. Second, bilinear interpolation finds non-deterministic background pixels among the sampled pixels. Third, the 2D cubic fitting method composes surface function from pivoted background pixels. Fourth, reconstruction procedure makes a contour image from the surface function. Finally, elimination procedure subtracts the approximated background from the original image. To prove the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, this algorithm is applied to the yeast Zygosaccharomyces rouxii and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria Acinetobacter sp. Labeling by this proposed method can remove some noise and is more exact than labeling by only Otsu's method. Futhermore, we show that it is more effective for the reduction of noise.

Double clad fiber probe for fluorescence spectroscopy

  • We report a probe using a single double clad fiber (DCF) for fluorescence spectroscopy. Bidirectional separate transmission for excitation and fluorescence light in a single fiber was implemented. A DCF coupler made by side-polished method could extract none but the collected fluorescence signals propagating in inner cladding mode, thereby diminishing the interference of silica background generated by the excitation in core mode. The experimental results show that the fluorescence spectra of biological tissues obtained using the DCF probes have much less silica background than using a standard multiple-mode fiber.

  • This paper proposes a face identification algorithm, robust on lighting condition and complex background. The proposed method estimates facial area under bad light condition by expanding face color boundaries and then finds a lip using the templates for lips. Then the eyes are found using their topological relationship with the long and short axes of lip area. The experimental results have shown that the proposed algorithm is robust on lighting conditions and complex background.

  • The spectral responsivity of solar cells has been measured under high background irradiance using an LED-based differential spectral responsivity Comparator (DSR-C). The comparator developed is fully automated and has some advantages: It does not need a chopper to modulate the light. Unlike the conventional method, it does not require a monochromator to select wavelength. It covers a wavelength range up to 1200 nm. The wavelength range of the comparator is limited by the spectral power distribution of the LEDs and the spectral responsivity of the standard detector. An active temperature control was utilized to meet the specified standard conditions of solar cell test. This work shows the effect of different levels of background irradiance on the spectral responsivity and the importance of same background irradiance for solar cell test as specified by the corresponding standard.

  • In this paper, a object detection and tracking algorithm is presented which exhibits robust properties for image sequences with complex background. The proposed algorithm is composed of three parts: moving object detection, object tracking, and motion analysis. The moving object detection algorithm is implemented using a temporal median background method which is suitable for real-time applications. In the motion analysis, we propose a new technique for removing a temporal clutter, such as a swaying plant or a light reflection of a background object. In addition, we design a multiple vehicle tracking system based on Kalman filtering. Computer simulation of the proposed scheme shows its robustness for MPEG-7 test image sequences.

3D Faces Reconstruction Using Structured Light Images (구조 광 영상을 이용한 3차원 얼굴 복원)

  • This paper proposes a method to reconstruct the 3-D face using structured light image. First of all, we suppose that each sight vector of a projector and camera are parallel. We project the structured light in the shape of lattice on the background to acquire the reference-structured light image. This image is used to calibrate the projector and camera. Since then, we acquire the face-structured light image which is projected the same structured light on the face. These two structured light images are used to reconstruct the 3-D face through the variation which is measured from the positional difference of feature vectors. In our experiment result, we could reconstruct the 3-D face image as recognize through these simple devices.

Comparison between a Light-Scattering and a Light-Extinction Methods for the Study on Soot Yielding Characteristics of an Electric Cable Fire (전선 매연 생성 특성 연구를 위한 광산란법-광소멸법의 비교)

  • Significant portion of the fire accident is caused by some troubles in electric circuits. To prevent the fire induced by those electric trouble, some indications of electric fire need to be suitably detected at the first stage of the fire development. With this background, the characteristics of soot yielding of electric cables have been investigated using a light extinction method. In this study, a light scattering method was compared with the light extinction method. A slot-type premixed-flame combustor was traversed to bum three types of electric cables by compulsion, then the mass decrease rate and the soot densities were measured. According to the experimental results, the light scattering method is preferred to the light extinction method when the soot yield ratio is relatively small. Thus the former method is more suitable to detect the occurrence of an electric fire in a power distributer box.
