  • A existing standard design section of transitional zone between bridge and earthwork section in high speed railway should be designed to gradually change support stiffness from bridge abutment to backfill side that were placed on cemented stabilized gravel, general gravel, soil materials. The larger the backfill slope of the general gravel and soil was more structurally stable, but there is no clear reason about them. In this study, it was compared with settlement and bearing capacity of backfill area in currently design and alternating backfill slope section using large centrifuge tester. As the experimental results, it was showed that the 1:2 slope and 1:1.5 slope have almost similar bearing capacity behavior under the load stage as railway loading level.

  • In this study, the reinforcing effect of geogrids in the narrow backfill by sand was experimentally studied. In the model tests, the size of space and the slope of the cut off slope were varied out. The resultant and the distribution of lateral earth pressure were measured. Width of backfill space varied 10 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm at the lower wall level and angle of the cut off slope varied $90^{\circ}$, $75^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$. Geogrids were installed in the backfill. Measured results showed that the distribution of the lateral earth pressure due to the narrow backfill developed in a arching shape. And the earth pressure was reduced due to the reinforcement of the backfill by geogrid. geogrid helps reduction of lateral earth pressure.

  • Centrifuge model tests of cantilever retaining wall were performed to investigate the vertical stress distribution due to selfweight of backfill material. Model tests were carried out to find the effect of arching action on vertical stress distribution by changing the roughness of rigid boundary slope and the distance between retaining wall and boudary slope. A reduced scale model of cantilever retaining wall was made with concrete and Jumunjin Standary Sand with 80 % of relative density was used as foundation and backfill material. Centrifuge tests were performed by increasing g-level up to 40 g with measuring vertical stress induced by selfweight of backfill material. Test results on vertical stress distribution were analyzed and compared with results of Silo theory.

  • Most tunnel lining material which has been used in the domestic is a concrete. But many problems as the construction period, the cost, and the crack occurrence for the design, construction, and management were happened in the concrete lining. For this reason, many research institutes like the Korea Highway Corporation recognize the necessity of an alternate material development and grow on the interest for that. So in this study, the seismic behaviour characteristics for the application of the Corrugated Steel Plate Lining in cut-and-cover tunnel are evaluated as several conditions for the backfill height, the cutting slope, and the relative density of backfill soil are changed. The compressive stress which is calculated in the Corrugated Steel Plate Lining by the seismic load is decreased as the backfill height increases and the cut slope grows gentle. Also, the moment shows the tendency of decrease according to the increase of the backfill height. But in the case of the relative density of the backfill soil is small, the moment increases according to the increase of the backfill height and affects the dynamic behaviour characteristic. So it is considered that the relative density of the backfill soil is also the important point. As the result in analyzing the seismic response characteristics of the reinforcement spacing of the Corrugated Steel Plate, the variation in the compressive force is hardly happened, but the moment and the shear force increase on the reinforcement spacing being narrow.

  • This paper presents a case history of a geosynthetics-reinforced segmental retaining wall, which collapsed during a sever rainfall immediately after the completion of the wall construction. In an attempt to identify possible causes for the collapse, a comprehensive investigation was carried out including physical and strength tests on the backfill, stability analyses on the as-built design based on the current design approaches, and slope stability analyses with pore pressure consideration. The investigation revealed that the inappropriate as-built design and the bad-quality backfill were mainly responsible for the collapse. This paper describes the site condition including wall design, details of the results of investigation and finally, lessons learned. Practical significance of the findings from this study is also discussed.

  • It is a common failure type that high-filled embankment slope sideslips. The deformation mechanism and factors influencing the sideslip of embankment slope is the key to reduce the probability of this kind of engineering disaster. Taking Liujiawan high-filled embankment slope as an example, the deformation and failure characteristics of embankment slope and sheet-pile wall are studied, and the factors influencing instability are analyzed, then the correlation of deformation rate of the anti-slide plies and each factor is calculated with multivariate linear regression analysis. The result shows that: (1) The length of anchoring segment is not long enough, and displacement direction of embankment and retaining structure are perpendicular to the trend of the highway; (2) The length of the cantilever segment is so large that the active earth pressures behind the piles are very large. Additionally, the surface drainage is not smooth, which leads to form a potential sliding zone between bottom of the backfill and the primary surface; (3) The thickness of the backfill and the length of the anti-slide pile cantilever segment have positive correlation with the deformation whereas the thickness of anti-slide pile through mudstone has a negative correlation with the deformation. On the other hand the surface water is a little disadvantage on the embankment stability.

  • This thesis is an experimental and numerical research on bearing capacity acting retaining walls close to rigid slopes with stiff angles. Experiments were performed with changing the roughness of adjacent slope to the wall, its inclination, distance between wall and slope. Vertical stress and applied surcharge loads were measured by miniature earth cells and a load cel respectively. Stress distribution Vertical Settlement of surcharge load of rigid model footing were measured by LVDTs. Bearing capacities of surcharge loads were compared with theoretical estimations by using several different methods of limit equilibrium and numerical analysis. For limit equilibrium methods, the modified silo and the wedge theories, proposed by Chung sung gyo and Chung in gyo (1994) were used to analyze test results Based on those modified theories, the particular solution with the boundary condition of surcharge loads on the surface of backfill was obtained to find the stress distributions acting in the backfill and to compare with test results. From results of surcharge test with model wall being very close to the slope, analyzed results by the modified silo theory and to be in the better agreements than other methods.

  • This paper is dealt with railway slope stability for slope reinforcement using a geosynthetic concrete composite mat(GCCM). Recently, according to a change in weather caused by global warming, train operation has been restricted by the loss of backfill slope at the roadbed, which is consists of gravel, due to typhoons and heavy rainfall. In addition, the amount of damage is getting more significant than the cost of restoration, and the safety of workers is worried. In order to improve this limitation, a slope stability analysis was applied with a rapid hardening composite mat so that it can quickly secure a construction surface with increased workability and work stability and reduce maintenance costs by preventing re-loss in case of heavy rain and fundamentally blocking vegetation. As a result of the analysis, it was confirmed that the increase in safety factor was confirmed when the rapid harding composite mat was applied.

  • This paper is the result of the experimental and numerical research on the distribution of vertical earth pressure due to surcharge loads acting on cantilever retaining wall close to a rigid slope with a stiff angle. Centrifuge model experiments were performed with changing the roughness of adjacent slope to the wall, distance between the wall and the slope and gravitational levels. Vertical earth pressures were measured by earth cells embedded in the backfill of the wall. Test results of vertical earth pressures due to surcharge loads were compared with theoretical estimations by using two different methods of limit equilibrium and the numerical analysis. For limit equilibrium methods, the modified silo and the wedge theories, proposed by Chung(1993, 1997), were used to analyze test results. Based on those modified theories, the particular solution with the boundary condition of surcharge loads on the surface of backfill was obtained to find the vertical stress distributions acting on the backfill. FLAC with the hyperbolic constitutive model was also used for the numerical estimation. As a result of comparison of test results with theoretical and numerical estimations, distribution of vertical earth pressures obtained from centrifuge model tests is generally in good agreement with numerical estmated values by using FLAC whereas the wedge theory shows values close to test results in case the distance between the wall and the slope is narrow.
