  • In this study, the method of process design for side forming of a tooth part used for a component of automobile transmission was suggested using FE-simulations. To develop the side forming for the tooth part, in this paper, the shape factors of B.T.Pin was considered as design parameters. The shape factors of B.T.Pin were selected to be the round of pin, reinforced angle and reinforced length. Based on FE simulation results, appropriate shape factor without causing any defects was selected. In addition, to increase the strength of pin, the combination of shape factor having minimum stress after side forming was selected using FE-simulation. In addition, with design of a die set, cold side forming of the tooth part was experimented to estimate effectiveness of the designed B.T.Pin. From experiments, it was found that the tooth part with complete formation of the tooth was obtained without making any forming defects and punch fracture.

  • The main objective of this study is to develop a dual approach for geometrically nonlinear finite element analysis of plane truss structures. The geometric nonlinearity is considered using the Total Lagrangian formulation. The nonlinear solution is obtained by introducing and minimizing an objective function subjected to displacement-type constraints. The proposed method can fully trace the whole equilibrium path of geometrically nonlinear plane truss structures not only before the limit point but also after it. No stiffness matrix is used in the main approach and the solution is acquired only based on the direct classical stress-strain formulations. As a result, produced errors caused by linearization and approximation of the main equilibrium equation will be eliminated. The suggested algorithm can predict both pre- and post-buckling behavior of the steel plane truss structures as well as any arbitrary point of equilibrium path. In addition, an equilibrium path with multiple limit points and snap-back phenomenon can be followed in this approach. To demonstrate the accuracy, efficiency and robustness of the proposed procedure, numerical results of the suggested approach are compared with theoretical solution, modified arc-length method, and those of reported in the literature.

  • In this work, mechanical characteristics of stainless steel diaphragm have been studied as a potential robust substrate and a diaphragm material for micromachined devices. Lamination process techniques combined with traditional micromachining processes have been adopted as suitable fabrication technologies. To illustrate these principles, capacitive pressure sensors based on a stainless steel diaphragm have been designed, fabricated and characterized. The fabrication process for stainless steel micromachined devices keeps the membrane and substrate being at the environment of 8.65MPa pressure and $175^{\circ}C$ for a half hour and then subsequently cooled to $25^{\circ}C$. Each sensor uses a stainless steel substrate, a laminated stainless steel film as a suspended movable plate and a fixed, surface micromachined back electrode of electroplated nickel. The finite element method is adopted to investigate residual stresses formed in the process. Besides, out-of-plane deflections are calculated under pressures on the diaphragm. The sensitivity of the device fabricated using these technologies is 9.03 ppm $kPa^{-1}$ with a net capacitance change of 0.14 pF over a range 0$\sim$180 kPa.

  • In order to develop nondestructive techniques for the quantitative estimation of creep damage a series of crept copper samples were prepared and their ultrasonic velocities were measured. Velocities measured in three directions with respect to the loading axis decreased nonlinearly and their anisotropy increased as a function of creep-induced porosity. A progressive damage model was described to explain the void-velocity relationship, including the anisotropy. The comparison of modeling study showed that the creep voids evolved from sphere toward flat oblate spheroid with its minor axis aligned along the stress direction. This model allowed us to determine the average aspect ratio of voids for a given porosity content. A novel technique, the back propagation neural network (BPNN), was applied for estimating the porosity content due to the creep damage. The measured velocities were used to train the BP classifier, and its accuracy was tested on another set of creep samples containing 0 to 0.7 % void content. When the void aspect ratio was used as input parameter together with the velocity data, the NN algorithm provided much better estimation of void content.

  • Degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis(DLSS) is a disease inducing low back pain, leg pain, convulsion, numbness, and neurogenic claudication from compression of nerve root. Intervertebra fixation was reported to increase the degenerative of neighbor region after treatment. Recently, a new surgical technique of inserting a fixator between interspinous processes has been introduced. The purpose of this study is to design of the interspinous process fixator with flexibility to complement the trouble of using fixator in DLSS. This study evaluated the existing fixator through the mechanical test and modified fixators using the finite element analysis(FEA). Displacement, stiffness and Von-Mises stress were found to have similar values to those obtained from the mechanical test and the FEA in the biomechanical loading condition. Effects of variation in length and thickness were investigated to design an optimal fixator.

  • The degenerative lumbar spinal stenosis (DLSS) is a disease inducing low back pain, leg pain, convulsion. numbness, and neurogenic claudication from compression of nerve root. Intervertebra fixation was reported to increase the degeneration of neighbor lesion after treatment. Recently, a new surgical technique of inserting a fixator between interspinous processes has been introduced. The purpose of this study is to design the interspinous process fixator with flexibility to complement the trouble of using fixator in DLSS. This study evaluated the existing fixator through the mechanical test and modified it using the finite element analysis (FEA). The evaluation was based on the displacement, stiffness and von-Mises stress obtained from the mechanical test and calculated from the FEA in the biomechanical loading condition. Effects of variation in length and thickness were investigated to design an optimal fixator. Three prototypes were manufactured using FEA results. Mechanical tests under the biomechanical loading condition were performed to select the best one from these three. The selected fixator increased flexiblity by 32.9%.

  • In order to occupy educational furniture market that grows by the day and to meet demands for alternative product for the current market, this study took business features and productivity of Sinil Furniture Co into consideration, and developed computer desk for education by group, which is new among educational furniture. The scope of the study ranges from data research based on design process into creation of prototype. By improving the condition where, despite that electrically-powered computer desk for anti-theft system is high priced, it sees frequent malfunction, the study suggested low-priced, non- electrically-powered anti-theft system which has more solid structure. Furthermore, in order for the user to be more free and comfortable while studying on it, it differentiates from other products by locating PC main body to the back of the monitor and lowering it below the altitude of monitor to prevent it from interfering with studies. We've made the higher board of the desk in a soft curved-shape in order to lessen the stress from studying. And as space for the monitor's lower mount was decreased, we've put the lower mount below the higher board; so that lacking space can be recovered while functioning as anti-theft system. Moreover, we've covered the PC main body with steel cover so that it would add color and formal luxuriousness to the appearance of the desk. Considering ease of mobility and productivity, knock-down system was introduced.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the concept of information commons and learning commons that has emerged in recent years, and point out the difference between the two concepts, as well as its implications for public libraries, which get lessons learned from learning commons at Japanese public libraries. To track its evolution to learning commons, the theoretical component of learning commons was analyzed. Based on the reference, a research framework for the case study of learning commons was developed. With IT technology diffusion, libraries have become information commons. However, the main mission of libraries should basically remain as learning. Because of this, libraries which function as information commons should go back to being learning commons, which are primarily places of learning. This research shows that libraries should stress its original basic mission which is learning, beyond being information commons in the Japanese library.

  • Flavobacterium columnare (F. columnare), the dermotropic Gram negative yellow pigmented bacteria was isolated from different sites of skin ulcerations in the Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) and Nile catfish (Clarias gariepinus) collected from an earthen pond located at an aquaculture station in Sharkiya Province, Lower Egypt during an acute episode of mass kills during the early summer of 2009. An acute infection with F. columnare was behind the emergent event of mass mortalities among both populations. Many of the Nile tilapias exhibited typical signs of hole - in- the head like lesions from which F. columnare together with the myxosporean spore, Myxobolus tilapiae (M. tilapiae) were retrieved. Most of the cohabitating infected Nile catfishes exhibited severe form of saddle back like ulcer. The identities of the retrieved isolates were confirmed using morphological, biochemical and molecular tools. The research lead us to conclude that the two diverse etiological agents (F. columnare and M. tilapiae) under the triggering effect of the abrupt change in the water quality measures (abrupt rise in the water temperature, ammonia, pH, sharp decrease in dissolved oxygen) have synergized together to induce the above mentioned pathology with the consequent reemergence of fish mass mortalities.
