Capillaria hepatica is a parasitic nematode which causes hepatic capillariasis in rodents and other mammals, including man. Rat species of the genus Rattus are main primary host and rates of genus Rattus of up to 100% have been reported. Infection to reservoir and other mammalian hosts occur incidentally due to ingestion of water or food contaminated with C. hepatica embryonated eggs. The worms mature exclusively inside the liver, but they die and disassemble soon after egg spawning in rats. Dead worms and their eggs cause immune response of focal necrosis and inflammation within the liver. C. hepatica adult with a thin and long body is similar to capillary. The members of Order Trichurida are characterized by having a stichosome and the bacillary bands in front of the body. As already mentioned, the adult C. hepatica residesin the liver, where it deposits groups of eggs, and finally die in the encapsulated tissue of the liver. They produce eggs that elicit a marked granulomatous reaction that eventually destroy the worms. And the adult worms were mixed with eggs. So the complete isolation of the worm and observation of intact ultrastructure is very difficult. In this study, integument structure of C. hepatica isolated from the liver of mouse at 7 weeks after inoculation of embryonated eggs were observed with scanning and transmission electron microscopy. As a results, body length of isolated C. hepatica was about 99 mm. Cuticle, bacillary band and bacillary pore were obtained in the integument of worm. Bacillary pore across cuticular surface of the worm were observed. According to the existence of cap material, external forms of bacillary pore can be divided into three types such as flat, ingression, and ingression with the cap material type. The complete isolation of the worm and observation of ultrastructure of integument will provide the fundamental data which is important in the nematode research including C. hepatica.
Bacillary is the most common form of H. pylori observed during human infection. However, it is known that the morphology change of H. pylori from bacillary to coccoid can be occurred with a response to the environmental stresses such as the nutrient depletion, accumulation of toxic metabolites, pH alteration, and exposure to antimicrobial agents. The coccoid form of H. pylori, which is viable but non-culturable in vitro, seems to be the major cause of antibiotic resistancy and high reinfectability of H. pylori. In this regard, we studied the environmental factors that can induce the morphological change in vitro of H. pylori, and the change of fatty acid composition of plasma membrane. The morphological change from bacillary to coccoid could be observed with the depletion of nutrients, pH variation and reactive oxygen species added in the culture media. This morphologic conversion was paralleled by a dramatic decrease in unsaturated fatty acids and an increase in saturated fattv acids of plasma membrane. The change in composition of membrane fatty acid seems to be a kind of protection mechanism of H. pylori against these environmental stresses.
Cat scratch disease is a zoonotic disease usually caused by the gram-negative bacterium Bartonella henselae. It is transmitted commonly by scratch or bite from cats or kitten. Cat scratch disease typically affects children and young adults, who develop regional lymphadenopathy. In contrast, in immunocompromised hosts, bacteremia may occur, bacillary angiomatosis and bacillary peliosis hepatitis or splenitis are the most common manifestations. Bartonella henselae was detected in three of thirty veterinarians and Bartonella clarridgeiae was detected in one of thirty veterinarians by a novel nested polymerase chain reaction. Cat scratch disease will not be neglected, and it needs continuous studies as well as observation and prevention of this disease.

The potential pathogenicity of Vibrio splendidus biovar II, which was isolated from triploid larvae of pacific oyster with bacillary necrosis and fish pathogenic V. anguillarum were investigated. The 5-day-old larvae infected with V. splendidus biovar II at the dose of $1.81{\times}10^{4}$ CFU/$m\ell$ started to die within 8 hours after exposure and the mortality were reached to 100% in 16 hours. However, $1.13{\times}10^{4-5}$ CFU/$m\ell$ of V. anguillarum caused 5.5-20% mortality of the larvae after 24 hours. The 10-day-old larvae infected with V. splendidus biovar II at the dose of $5.0{\times}10^{5}$ CFU/$m\ell$ showed mortality from 8 hours after challenge and led to a marked mortality of 90.47% after 24 hours. But V. anguillarum at doses of $5.08{\times}10^{3-6}$ CFU/$m\ell$ did not show mortality in the 10-day-old larvae. Therefore V. splendidus biovar II exhibited stronger virulence in 5-day-old larvae than 10-day-old and young oyster. Changes in the concentration of Vibrio in sea water showed that V. anguillarum decreased from $1.13{\times}10^{5}$ CFU/$m\ell$ to 1.7${\times}$105 CFU/$m\ell$ and V. splendidus biovar II increased from $1.81{\times}10^{4}$ CFU/$m\ell$ to $1.7{\times}10^{7}$ CFU/$m\ell$. This strong survival ability of V. splendidus biovar II in seawater was thought as one of the virulence factors against oyster larvae. The mortalities of 5-day-old and 10-day-old oyster larvae were decreased by addition of 30 $\mu{g}/m\ell$ of antibacterial agent(oxytetracycline or streptomycin). These results suggest that bacillary necrosis by V. splendidus biovar II can be occurred in oyster larvae in Korea. And virulence of V. splendidus biovar II is stronger than that of V. anguillarum in oyster larvae causing significant mortality at the density of $10^{4}$ CFU/$m\ell$.
Ultraviolet light(UV-C, wavelength: 200~280nm) is employed profitably for sterilizing drinking water. For most water serving apparatus such as a water purifier, a water cooler and heater, a coffee vending machine and etc., pre-sterilized water may be contaminated secondarily with bacillary inhabitation in a container before serving. In consideration of this problem, a household water tap which is equipped with a sterilization/Purification device in combination with non-contact UV-lamp, was designed to sterilize and purify water at the last outlet just before serving. Hopefully this simple but creative item may be commercialized for household and public use.
An ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ gene (aglA) from thermophilic Bacillus sp. DG0303 was cloned, sequenced, and expressed in Escherichia coli. The aglA was localized to the 2.1-kb PvuI-XmnI region within the 5.9-kb DNA insert of the gybrid plasmid pAG1. The gene consisted of an open reading frame of 1,686 bp with an unusual GTG initiation codon and TGA termination codon. The amino acid sequence deduced from the nucleotide sequence predicted a protein of 562 amino acid residues with a M, of 66,551 dalton. A comparative amino acid sequence analysis revealed that DG0303 ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ is related to bacillary oligo-1, 6-glucosidases. The Bacillus sp. DG0303 ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ showed a high sequence identity (36-59%) to the B. flavocaldarius, B. cereus, and B. thermoglucosidasius oligo-1, 6-glucosidases. The number of prolines in theses four ${\alpha}-glucosidases. was observed to increase with increasing thermostability of these enzymes. The cloned ${\alpha}-glucosidase was purified from E. coli $DH5{\alpha}$ bearing pAG1 and characterized. The recombinant enzyme was identical with the native enzyme in its optimum pH and in its molecular mass, estimated by sodium dodecy1 sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The temperature optimum of the cloned ${\alpha}-glucosidase$ was lower than that of the native enzyme.

The flowers of Lonicera japonica Thunb. (Caprifoliaceae) have been used as a traditional effective drug in treating bacillary dysentery, purulence. However, the exact role of Lonicera japonica in allergic reaction has not been clarified yet. Immediate hypersensitivity, popularly known as allergy, is a major clinical problem in humans. It has been found that the histamine release from mast cells is an essential step in the pathological process of immediate hypersensitivity. In this study, the effect of aqueous extract of Lonicera japonica (AELJ) on allergic reaction was investigated. AELJ inhibited the compound 48/80-induced anaphylactic reactions and antigen-induced passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA). AELJ in vitro exhibited a dose-dependent inhibition of degranulation in RPMC stimulated by compound 48/80. AELJ also suppressed the morphological changes and the increase of intracellular free calcium level induced by compound 48/80. These results suggest that inhibitory effect of AELJ on allergic reaction may be mediated through the decrease of intracellular free calcium levels, and AELJ importantly contributes to the treatment of anaphylaxis and may be useful for other allergic disease.

$PM_{2.5}$ is one of critical air pollutants due to its high absorbability of heavy metallic fumes, PAH and bacillary micro organisms. Such a fine particulate matter is often formed through various nucleation processes including condensation. This study attempts to find the nucleation behaviors of $PM_{2.5}$ arisen from coal power stations using a classical heterogeneous Fletcher's theory. The numerical simulation by C-language could approximate the nucleation process of $PM_{2.5}$ from water vapor, of which approach revealed the required energy for embryo formation and embryo size and nucleation rate. As a result of the calculation, it was found that wetting agents could affect the particle nucleation in vapor condensation. In particular, critical contact angle relates closely with the vapor saturation. Particle condensation could be reduced by lowering the angles. The wetting agents aid to decrease the contact angle and surface tensions, thereby may contribute to save the formation energy.
A paragonimiasis infestation is caused by the paragonimus species. Paragonimiasis mainly occurs by ingestion of raw or undercooked freshwater crabs or crayfish. In our country, the prevalence of paragonimiasis was high until late 1960s due to eating habits, but after the 1970s the prevalence of the disease has markedly decreased and now the disease is rarely seen. The diagnosis of tuberculosis by Chest X-ray is often confused with pulmonary carcinoma, bacillary and parasitic infections, and chronic mycosis. Pulmonary paragonimiasis must be considered in the differential diagnosis of lung cancer especially in the appropriate clinical setting because effective treatment with praziquantel can be rewarding. We report a case of a 58-year-old woman with pulmonary paragonimiasis that was suspicious for lung cancer, as detected by biopsy.
