Zygotic embryos of Stewartia korean Nakai were cultured to determine the effects both of BA and NAA on adventitious shoot induction. Multiple shoots (about 11 per explant) were formed when the embryos were treated with 1.0 mg/L BA alone. On the other hand, NAA appeared to inhibit shoot induction when treated with BA. Adventitious shoots looked differ in form and color by the combinations of BA and NAA treated. When both BA and NAA were present, the shoots became short and developed dark color. The highest rooting was observed at 0.5mg/L NAA. The results could be useful for the establishment of in vitro regeneration system for Stewartia koreana Nakai.
Objectives: This study examined the relative efficacies of a derivative of betulinic acid (dBA) and its poly (lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) nano-encapsulated form in A549 lung cancer cells in vivo and in co-mutagen [sodium arsenite (SA) + benzo[a]pyrene (BaP)]-induced lung cancer in mice in vivo. Methods: dBA was loaded with PLGA nanoparticles by using the standard solvent displacement method. The sizes and morphologies of nano-dBA (NdBA) were determined by using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and their intracellular localization was verified by using confocal microscopy. The binding and interaction of NdBA with calf thymus deoxyribonucleic acid (CT-DNA) as a target were analyzed by using conventional circular dichroism (CD) and melting temperature (Tm) profile data. Apoptotic signalling cascades in vitro and in vivo were studied by using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA); the ability of NdBA to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) was also examined. The stage of cell cycle arrest was confirmed by using a fluorescence-activated cell-sorting (FACS) data analysis. Results: The average size of the nanoparticles was ~ 110 nm. Confocal microscopy images confirmed the presence of NdBA in the cellular cytoplasm. The bio-physical properties of dBA and NdBA ascertained from the CD and the Tm profiles revealed that NdBA had greater interaction with the target DNA than dBA did. Both dBA and NdBA arrested cell proliferation at G0/G1, NdBA showing the greater effect. NdBA also induced a greater degree of cytotoxicity in A549 cells, but it had an insignificant cytotoxic effect in normal L6 cells. The results of flow cytometric, cytogenetial and histopathological studies in mice revealed that NdBA caused less nuclear condensation and DNA damage than dBA did. TEM images showed the presence of NdBA in brain samples of NdBA fed mice, indicating its ability to cross the BBB. Conclusion: Thus, compared to dBA, NdBA appears to have greater chemoprotective potential against lung cancer.

The stable defect structure and the single phase region of La$_2O_3$-modified BaTi$O_3$ have been studied by X-ray diffractometer and scanning electron microscope. The stable defect structure of La$_2O_3$-modified BaTi$O_3$ has been identified as [($Ba^x_{Ba})_{1-2x}(La{\cdot}_{Ba})_{2x}][Ti^x_{Ti})_{1-x/2}(V""_{Ti})_{x/2}]O_3$ which consists of La$^{3+}$ ion substitution for Ba$^{3+}$ ion in the lattice structure and the formation of Ti vacancies for the charge compensation. When 3 mol% of La$_2O_3{\cdot}3/2TiO_3$ was added to BaTi$O_3$, the unit cell structure was transformed from tetragonal to cubic and the solubility limit was about 14 mol%. When La$_2O_3{\cdot}3/2TiO_2$ was added above this solubility limit, the second phase, La$_4Ba_2Ti_5O_{18}$, was formed. In the La$_2O_3$-modified BaTi$O_3$, it was found by the liquid phase sintering process that the sinterability was decreased by excess BaO but increased by excess Ti$O_2$.
$BaMnAl_{11}O_{19}$ was prepared by urea-induced homogeneous precipitation and characterized by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. At increased precipitant concentrations, AlOOH replaced $Al(OH)_3$ as an Al precursor. $BaMnAl_{11}O_{19}$ exhibited enhanced catalytic combustion performance and inhibited CO generation. Catalytic performance was also enhanced by the presence of $BaAl_2O_4$ and $BaMnAl_{11}O_{19}$. Compared to $BaAl_2O_4$, $BaMnAl_{11}O_{19}$ exhibited superior catalytic combustion activity.
Double layered BaTiO3 thin films with high dielectric constant as well as good insulating property were prepared for the application to low voltage driving thin film electroluminescent (TFEL) device. BaTiO3 thin films were formed by rf-magnetron sputtering technique. Amorphous and polycrystalline BaTiO3 thin films were deposited at the substrate temperatures of room temperature and 55$0^{\circ}C$, respectively. Two kinds of films prepared under these conditions showed high resistivity and high dielectric constant. The figure of merit (=$\varepsilon$r$\times$Eb.d) of polycrystalline BaTiO3 thin film was very high (8.43$\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$). The polycrystalline BaTiO3 showed a substantial amount of leakage current (I), under the high electric field above 0.5 MV/cm. The double layered BaTiO3 thin film, i.e., amorphous BaTiO3 layer coated polycrystalline BaTiO3 thin film, was prepared by the new stacking method and showed very good dielectric and insulating properties. It showed a high dielectric constant fo 95 and leakage current density of 25 nA/$\textrm{cm}^2$ (0.3MV/cm) with the figure of merit of 20$\mu$C/$\textrm{cm}^2$. The leakage current density in the double layered BaTiO3 was much smaller than that in polycrystalline BaTiO3 under the high electric field. The saturated brightness of the devices using double layered BaTiO3 was about 220cd/$m^2$. Threshold voltage of TFEL devices fabricated on double layered BaTiO3 decreased by 50V compared to the EL devices fabricated on amorphous BaTiO3.
BACKGROUND: Most of the bottom ash(BA) from wood pellet-based thermal power plants that is not recycled is placed into landfill. BA has a function and structure similar to biochar. Hence, BA is classified as waste, but, it is predicted that BA can be used agricultural utilization. METHODS AND RESULTS: To investigate the effect of BA application on lettuce, growth characteristics and Pb contents were examined with BA application levels(0, 1, 2, 3 and 4 g/L), respectively, in hydroponic cultivation with Pb solution. Irrespective with BA application levels, the length, leaf number and fresh weight of lettuce in BA treatments were increased by 84.3~120, 36.2~39.0, and 215~322%, respectively, compared to the BA-0 treatment. The groups with BA treatments, Pb in the nutrient solution was adsorbed to the BA due to the surface area and functional groups of the BA, and the lettuce growth was maintained more smoothly than in the BA-0 treatment. BA application is considered to have created a favorable environment for lettuce growth in hydroponic cultivation with Pb solution. CONCLUSION(S): Although direct comparing the removal effect of heavy metal between BA and biochar is not present, the BA application in contaminated area suggested a significant meaning on the recycling waste, and increasing potential crop productivity by immobilizing heavy metal.

$BaTiO_3$ coatings were prepared by micro arc oxidation (MAO) method. Only $Ba(OH)_2$ was dissolved in the electrolyte and process time was less than 30 min. Commercial purity $Ba(OH)_2$ (97%) containing $BaCO_3$ as impurity was used in preparing the electrolyte. XRD showed that the coating was composed of largely $BaTiO_3$, and in some process conditions, small quantity of impurity, $BaCO_3$, was characterized in the coating layer. The quantity of $BaCO_3$ could be controlled to negligible quantity by regulating the applied voltage and duration time of the MAO process.
The effect of physicochemical properties of organic solvent and dispersant among organic solvent dispersant binder and plasticizer which are used as processing additives in MLCC fabrication process on the dispersion of BaTiO3 was studied. The steric and electrostatic stabilization mechanisms in dispersion of BaTiO3 in organic media were evaluated respectively. The sttability of BaTiO3 achieved bysteric stabilization was dependent on the fraction of surface coverage of dispersant adsorption on BaTiO3. The electrostatic repulsive forces of BaTiO3 particles dispersed in orgainc media was found to be appreciabley great and dependent mainly on the kinds of organic solvent used. The mechanism affecting the stability of BaTiO3 was studied by the method of rheologi-cal behaviors of BaTiO3 suspension.
Dielectric property of Ba-modified 0.65Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-0.35PbTiO3 ceramics having compositions near the morphotropic phase boundary was investigated. For the specimens having Ba contents between 0 and 20 at%, the average transition temperature was decreased linearly with increasing Ba contents and the degree of hysteresis was also decreased with increasing Ba contents. The maximum dielectric constants (K), electric field induced polarization(P) and electrically-induced strain(S) were found to exihibit a maximum value at∼3 at% of Ba. The increase of S and the decrease of hysteresis by minor additions of Ba impurities indicated the development of new higher perfomance actuator materials. The composition of Ba-PMN-PT (10/65/35) may be appropriate for capacitor materials because of low hysteresis and high polarization.
The EPR spectra of Cu-or Zr-doped BaTiO3 ceramics exhibited absorption signals with g∥=2.380 and g⊥=2.063 which are assigned to Ba1+(Ba2+ + e'→Ba1+) ion reduced by an electron that was produced from the oxygen vacancy (VO..). The intensity of these signals decreased as the temperature increased indicating that Ba1+ was changed to Ba2+ as the temperature increased. These ceramics also showed the EPR signal with g=1.997 around TC which arises from ionized Ba-vacancies, VBa'(VBa + e'→VBa'. In the orthorhombic and tetragonal phase region g=1.997 signal was not seen. The electrons generating from the oxidation of Ba1+ and ionized Ba-vacancies may contribute to a space charge which is responsible for a dielectric relaxation of these samples.
