  • Background: Nefopam has shown an analgesic effect on acute pain including postoperative pain. The reuptake of monoamines including serotonin and noradrenaline has been proposed as the mechanism of the analgesic action of nefopam, but it remains unclear. Although alpha-adrenergic agents are being widely used in the perioperative period, the role of noradrenergic modulation in the analgesic effect of nefopam has not been fully addressed. Methods: Changes in the antinociceptive effect of intrathecal (i.t.) nefopam against formalin-elicited flinching responses were explored in Sprague-Dawley rats pretreated with i.t. 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), which depletes spinal noradrenaline. In addition, antagonism to the effect of nefopam by prazosin and yohimbine was evaluated to further elucidate the antinociceptive mechanism of i.t. nefopam. Results: Pretreatment with i.t. 6-OHDA alone did not alter the flinching responses in either phase of the formalin test, while it attenuated the antinociceptive effect of i.t. nefopam significantly during phase 1, but not phase 2. The antagonist of the alpha-2 receptor, but not the alpha-1 receptor, reduced partially, but significantly, the antinociceptive effect of i.t. nefopam during phase 1, but not during phase 2. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that spinal noradrenergic modulation plays an important role in the antinociceptive effect of i.t. nefopam against formalin-elicited acute initial pain, but not facilitated pain, and this action involves the spinal alpha-2 but not the alpha-1 receptor.

  • Healthy ginseng pudding was made with different doses of two gelling agents and stored at $37^{\circ}C$ for eight weeks. And then quality characteristics and palatability were measured. Sweetness and pH level increased in newly made ginseng puddings but decreased during storage. Acid taste decreased but increased during storage in A (pectin 0.2%+agar 0.6%). But it increased but subsequently decreased in B (agar 0.8%). Acidity in C (agar 1%) remained unchanged until six weeks but slightly increased at 8 weeks of storage. Texture increased in all specimens but subsequently decreased. Chromaticity value of L decreased in all specimens before increasing while the values of a and b increased and subsequently decreased. In texture examination, hardness and adhesion were higher in C (agar 1%) and lower in A (pectin 0.2%+agar 0.6%). There were no differences in elasticity among three specimens. Cohesion was higher in C (agar 1%) while it showed a similar level in A (pectin 0.2%+agar 0.6%) and B(agar 0.8%). Stickiness and chewiness were higher in C(agar 1%) but lower in A(Pectin 0.2%+agar 0.6%), compared with C(agar 1%) specimen. In sensory test, overall palatability was higher in A (Pectin 0.2%+agar 0.6%). In conclusion, ginseng pudding with 0.6% agar and 0.2% pectin exhibited better quality. And ginseng pudding has potential to be developed as healthy dessert considering ample physiological and functional properties.

  • This study was designed to observe the change of body composition and nutrient metabolites and the excretion of minerals during complete fasting for 10 days in thirty women. Average loss of body weight was 7.98kg and body fat was gradually reduced after 9 days fasting, but the loss of lean body mass was reduced after 7 days fasting. Serum glucose level was sustained at constant level, but serum levels of blood urea nitrogen, free acid and $\beta$-hydroxybutyrate were significantly increased during fasting but decreased after re-feeding. Urinary excretions of 3-methylhistidine, total creatinine, and urea were high in the beginning of fasting but gradually decreased. Serum level of parathyroid hormone was significantly reduced by fasting but regained after re-feeding. Serum level of minerals was at the constant level throughout the experimental period. The urinary excretion of minerals(Ca, K, Mg, P) was significantly increased in the early stage of fasting and then reduced from 7 days, but the excretion of Zn was continuously increased until the late stage of fasting. These results showed that amino acid fatty acid released from the breakdown of muscle protein and body fat, respectively, were utilized for energy during fasting. Body weight and BMI were reduced because of the increased muscle protein breakdown and body water excretion during early stage of fasting, but the significant body fat loss was after 9 days fasting. Therefore, it could be suggested to fast for longer than 10 days if the reduction of body fat was planned by fasting, and recommed to exercise and ingest more vitamins and minerals to replace the excreted minerals during fasting. • Compression, lateral, and opposite woods in the stem and branch of rimu (Dacrydium cupressinum Lamb.), a softwood species indigenous to New Zealand, were described and compared in the anatomical aspects. Qualitatively, growth rings were wide in the compression wood, intermediate in the lateral wood, and narrow in the opposite wood. Tracheid transition from early wood to late wood was very gradual in the compression wood but was more abrupt in both the lateral and opposite woods. When viewed transversely, compression wood tracheids showed a roundish outline except at the growth ring boundary but lateral and opposite wood tracheids were angular to rectangular in outline. Intercellular spaces were occasionally detected in the compression wood except in the late wood at the growth ring boundary but were absent from both the lateral and opposite woods. Slit-like extensions of the bordered pit openings caused by the location of pit apertures within short and narrow helical grooves were observed in the compression wood tracheids but not in the opposite or lateral wood tracheids. In the compression wood tracheids, fine striations in the form of fine checks or grooves were observed on the lumen surfaces and the innermost $S_3$ layer of secondary wall was absent. In the tracheids of lateral and opposite woods, the $S_3$ layer was sometimes absent but occasionally highly developed. Cross-field pits in the compression wood appeared to be piceoid due to slit-like pit apertures but those in the lateral and opposite wood tracheids showed cupressoid to taxodioid. Quantitatively, compression wood tracheids were somewhat shorter than those of opposite or lateral wood in stem but not different from the opposite or lateral wood tracheids in branch. The walls were thicker in the compression wood than in the lateral or opposite wood. Uniseriate rays in the compression wood were fewer than in the lateral or opposite wood.

  • Commercial deerhorns were extracted in boiling water, the deerhorn extracts were per os introduced into rabbits, and then the effects of the extracts on the antibody productions aginst Escherichia coli antigens were investigated for 4 weeks. The experimental rabbits were divided into 4 groups ; control, only deerhorn, only antigen, and antigen plus deerhorn treated groups. The effects of the treatments were measured by counting the number of blood cells, weighing, and immunoelectrophoresis. The rabbits' body weights gained up to 185% in the deerhorn group, and the other groups gained nearly 120%. The numbers of red blood cells in the antigen plus deerhorn group increased somewhat. However, the numbers of leucocytes gradually increased after one week in the antigen group, and at 4 weeks increased up to 290%. In the antigen plus deerhorn group the numbers of leucocytes increased suddenly up to 189% at one week, but after one week the numbers recovered to normal state. Strangely in the deerhorn group the numbers decreased up to 40%. The amounts of serum globulin increased in the control after one week, but maintained about 130%. In the deerhorn group the amounts increased like the control, but after 4 weeks increased up to 175%. In the antigen group the amounts were not changed until 2 weeks, but after 3 weeks abruptly increased over 175%. In the deerhorn plus antigen group the amounts increased gradually up to 262% until 3 weeks, after 3 and 4 weeks the amounts did not increase. The amounts of serum .gamma.-globulin decreased in the control group, and in the deerhorn group and antigen group the amounts did not change until 2 weeks, but after 3 weeks abruptly increased over 175%. In the deerhorn plus antigen group the amounts increased gradually up to 262% until 3 weeks, after 3 and 4 weeks the amounts did not increase. The amounts of serum ${\gamma}-globulin$ decreased in the control group, and in the deerhorn group and antigen group the amounts did not change until 3 weeks, but after 4 week the amounts slightly increased up to 110%. However, the amounts in the deerhorn plus antigen group did not change until 2 weeks, but after 2 weeks abruptly increased up to 174%. The recognized immunoglobulins were IgG and IgM, and the enhanced immunoglobulin was IgG.

  • A field experiment was conducted in Chungiu and Jungwon to evaluate growth characteristics, root development, dry matter yield, crude protein yield and palatability according to nitrogen fertilizer level at intercropping cultivation of sorghum $\times$ sudangrass hybrid(hereinafier referred as SSH) and soybean. Nitrogen level was six treatment of Okg, 30kg 60kg, 90kg 120kg, and 150kg per hectare, and cutting date (sorghum $\times$ sudangrass and soybean) was july 28. 1. In the SSH, plant length was increased with increasing nitrogen fertilizer from 0kg/ha to 120kg/ha, but 150kgha treatment was decreased cornpared to 120kg/ha treatment. In the soybean, plant length did not show difference among 0kg, 30kg 60kg, and 90kg per hectare, but 120kg and 150kgfha treatment was on the contrary short. In the SSH, leaf length, leaf width and leaf number were the highest in 120kg/ha treatment, but soybean showed multifarious. 2. Stem diameter of SSH was increased with increasing nitrogen fertilizer. But soybean was thick from 0kg/ha treatment to 60kg/ha treatment, while above 90kg/ha treatment was on the contrary thin. Stem of SSH was hard with increasing nitrogen fertilizer, but soybean was soft with increasing nitrogen fertilizer. Root weight (Dry matter) of SSH was increased with increasing nitrogen fertilizer. On the contrary, soybean was decreased with increasing nitrogen fertilizer. 3. In the dairy cattle and Korean native cattle, palatability according to nitrogen fertilizer was the highest at 90kgha treatment, while 120kgha treatment and 150kgha treatment was the lowest. But in the deer, 30kg/ha treatment of low nitrogen fertilizer was the highest in palatability. 4. Nitrogen content of root of SSH was increased with increasing nitrogen fertilizer(P<0.01). But in soybean, 30kg and 60kg/ha treatment were higher than 0kg, 90kg, 120kg and 150kg/ha treatment(P<0.01). Total niwogen content of soil were high at 90kg 120kg 150kgha trea~ment(P<0.01). 5. Dry matter yield was high at the 90kg 120kg and 150kgha treatment as range from 15, 262kg/ha to 15, 614kg/ha without significant difference among those, but Okgha treatment was the lowest as 11, 183kg/ha (PC 0.05). Protein content of SSH was the highest at 90kg/ha treatment as 8.3 percentage. Soybean was highest at 60kgha treatment as 22.9 percentage. Protein yield was the highest at 90kg/ha treatment as 1, 547.6kg/ha, but Okgha treatment was the lowest as 1, 022.8kg/ha (P<0.01).

  • There were so many discussions about the importance of Ungi theory, but little about its application. But, in Korea, there is particular Ungi medical system. I studied the 25 organic constitutions and their prescriptions and concluded like below. In "Ounyukgihanihakbogam(五運六氣漢醫學寶鑑)", "Ounyukgihak(五運六氣學)", there are 25 organic constitutions, and each of them has its basic prescription. Like above, In "Ounyukgigeummoksuhwatosangsaengsanggeukbeop(五運六氣金木水火土相生相克法)", "Ounyukgigyeongheomcheobang(五運六氣經驗處方)", and "Jesaenglon(濟生論)", there are also 25 organic constitutions, and each has basic prescription. Moreover, there are so many prescriptions for diseases can often occur. I classified these as three groups, "Ounyukgihak(五運六氣學)" is groupⅠ, "Ounyukgihanihakbogam(五運六氣漢醫學寶鑑)" is Ⅱ, and the other books is Ⅲ, and compared each basic prescriptions. GroupⅠand Ⅱ use similar prescriptions, but groupⅢ doesn't. This Ungi medical system has little relation with "Somun(素問)". And I couldn't find the organic constitutions based on Ungi from other country's oriental medical book. 25 organic constitutions have much sameness in prescriptions. These prescriptions are used in real medical system, but not wide. Of course, it needs more research, but it has another position in oriental medicine.

  • KA 101 and Xanthi-Basma were cultivated in Korea and Greece to compare the respective responses to environments on their leaf composition during 1984 and 1985. Cured leaves cultivated in Greece had brighter and greenish color with 2-4 times higher total chlorophyll and carotenoids showing higher contents of total nitrogen, nicotine, petroleum ether extract, volatile acids and neutrals, but crude ash and pH of leaves at top stalk position were lower than in Korean cultured leaves. Xanthi-Basma showed higher contents of nicotine and total nitrogen, but lower contents of reducing sugar than KA 101. There were no difference in crude ash, petroleum ether extract contents and pH of leaves. Among stalk positions, the upper stalk leaves in Greece had higher contents of total nitrogen, protein nitrogen, nicotine, petroleum ether extract and volatile acids but lower contents of reducing sugar than lower ones., whereas the supper stalk leaves in Korea had much higher contents of total nitrogen, protein nitrogen, pH, crude ash, but not higher contents of petroleum ether extract and volatile acid contents than lower stalk position. It suggest that in chemical criteria the better quality leaves are on the upper stalk position in Greece but not the same in Korea probably due to the rainy weather conditions during the later growth stage in Korea.

  • Many schools of the secondary level have been recently carrying out 'differentiated class'based on ability grouping between classed(DC). They are usually consisted of three levels; high level available to enriched course, middle level, and low level available to supplemental course. Phrhaps, almost all of the schools might nave executed DC before 2000 year. To do this, a lots of teachers have to develop differentiated teaching and learning materials for themselves. But, these mateirals are usually consisted of differentiated mathematics not on 'content'but on 'items'. So, for the successful 7th differentiated curriculum, the issues such as teaching and learning methods, materials, and evaluation system should be considered in depth focused on DC. .Decide issues related to DC(for example, mathematical contents, methods, activities, class speed, extra)based not on teachers or experts but on students. .Differentiate teaching and learning mateirals according to DC and develop the materials(including guidelines, supplementary books, multimedia, extra) based not on mathematical items but on mathematical contents. .Introduce new mathematical concepts or laws using not only not only definition and explanation but also concrete examples or problems. .Suggest differentiated diverse projects related to mathematical subjects suitable to enhance students` thinking ability to each class. .Have students to develop projects successfully by collecting, representing, analyzing, and interpreting data through communications in a cooperative learning environment.
