  • For last century, our country fast changed by development of industry but we justly looked away that cultural and natural environment that must preserve inside the change, and we sought quantitative growth. But consciousness about culture is rising now; thereby social request becomes strong that is improved cultural environment; and viewpoint is appearing which is thought heftily cultural environment of city. Important thing of them is the modern age architecture, but serious discord is happening in the current society that allows conservation and destruction of the modern age architecture. But, visible cultural asset such as the modern age architecture is value when it protected as the first time, When it was broken! , restoration or age architecture really necessary to us.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of fructooligosaccharide on intestinal flora, lipid metabolism and immune response. Thirty two male rats of Sprague-Dawley strain were divided into two groups according to body weight. Each group was fed the diet containing 2% cholesterol or the normal diet, respectively for 4 weeks. Each group was again divided into two sub-groups and they were fed with the diet containing 5% of sucrose and fructooligosaccharide, respectively for 8 weeks. The number of bifidobacteria slight increased, but not significantly, in oligosaccharide groups. Plasma total lipid concentration in cholesterol group was signficantly increased compared to the value in normal group. Dietary oligosaccharide decreased plasma total lipid concentration and triglyceride concentrations in normal group, but not in cholesterol group. Fecal lipid excretion was higher in cholesterol group than in normal group. Fecal cholesterol concentration in cholesterol-oligosaccharide group was significantly increased compared to other groups. Cholesterol had slight effects on TBARS and the immune status, but dietary oligosaccharide had no effects on these variables. The results in this study suggest that dietary oligosaccharide had no effect on serum and liver profiles of rats fed high cholesterol diet but increases the fecal cholesterol excretion.

  • Objective: Thoracoscopic sympathicotomy is effective in treating not only palmar hyperhidrosis, but also axillary hyperhidrosis. But studies for axillary hyperhidrosis accompanying osmidrosis are few. We report the outcome of six axillary hyperhidrosis with osmidrosis with literatures review. Methods: Using a minimally invasive technique, thoracoscopic T3-4 sympathicotomy was performed. The results of sympathicotomy of third and fourth sympathetic chains of six patients from January 1999 to August 2003 for axillary hyperhidrosis with osmidrosis were reviewed. Results: All patients had a successful outcomes, their profuse sweating ceased. Two patients suffered from compensatory hyperhidrosis. Three patients disappeared or diminished foul odor but three patients complained remained osmidrosis. Conclusion: In the treatment of axillary hyperhidrosis, the sympathicotomy of T3 and T4 chain is an effective method but osmidrosis must be treated according to its cause.

  • Lipid oxidation and browning during fermentation of domestic Meju and Doenjang were examined in order to elucidate the antioxidative effects of browning products and phenol compounds from Meju and Doenjang. Peroxide values of lipids from Meju were detectable and slightly increased until 3 weeks of fermentation, but started to be decreased after 3 weeks of fermentation and notdetectable after 6 weeks. Peroxides were not detected in Doenjang during the whole fermentation, but started to be decreased after 3 weeks of period of 22 weeks fermentation. Carbonyl value were increased during the whole period of Meju fermentation, but started to be decreased at the early stage of Doenjang fermentation. Hydrophilic fraction of browning products from Meju was much higher than lipophilic fraction and the former fraction was dramatically increased at the early stage of the fermentation. But the both fractions maintained high values during Doenjang fermentation. Hydrophilic browning products and phenol and phenol compound in Meju showed strong antioxidative against linoleic acid.

  • Seasonal distribution of N, P and K contents and their cycling were studied in Korean oak (Quercus acutissima) and Korean alder (Alnus sibirica) stands in central part of Korean peninsula. The amounts of three minerals were high in young leaves but gradually decreased with the process of leaf development in both stands. The amounts of minerals in the branches, trunks and roots were decreased in summer, however, they increased again in autumn. Seansonal changes of these minerals were not significant in the two stands. The amounts of phosphorus and potassium in plant and soil were higher in the oak stand than the alder one, but those of nitrogen were reversed. The amounts of minerals absorbed during one year were greater in the oak stand than in the alder one, but those returned into soil through mineralization of litter were less in the former than in the latter. The nutrient requirements of the oak stand were greater than the alders, but the cycling rate, the ratio of the amount of minerals absorbed to returned, was opposite.

  • trans-Metanicotine, a subtype (${\alpha}_4{\beta}_2$)-selective ligand for neuronal nicotinic acetylcholine receptor, is under clinical phase for Alzheimer's disease. An efficient synthetic route for ($\pm$)-methyl-(1-aryl-4-pyridin-3-yl-but-3-enyl)-am ices, derivatives of tracts-metanicotine, was explored. Allylation reaction of aryl aldimines with allylmagnesium bromide in THF gave ($\pm$)-methyl-(1-aryl-but-3-enyl)-amines. Protection of the amines with the Boc group and following Heck reaction of the N-Boc amines with 3-bromopyridine gave ($\pm$)-methyl-(1-aryl-4-pyridin-3-yl-but-3-enyl)-carbamic acid tert-butyl esters. Deprotection of the N-Boc group in aqueous 1 N-HCI solution gave the titled amines in good yields. Thus, trans-metanicotine analogues modified at the ${\alpha}-position$ of the methylamino group with amyl groups were obtained in 5 steps.

  • Conceptual and procedural knowledge of integration is necessary not only in calculus but also in real analysis, complex analysis, and differential geometry. However, students show not only focused understanding of procedural knowledge but also limited understanding on conceptual knowledge of integration. So they are good at computation but don't recognize link between several concepts. In particular, Riemann sum is helpful in solving applied problem, but students are poor at understanding structure of Riemann sum. In this study, we try to investigate understanding on conceptual and procedural knowledge of integration and to analyze errors. Conducting experimental class of Riemann sum, we investigate the understanding of Riemann sum structure and so present the implications about improvement of integration teaching.

  • The purpose of this research was to investigate the effects of Seungyangikkitang (SIT) on the immune cells in BALB/c mice. SIT (500mg/kg) was administerd p.o. once a day for 7 days. SIT enhanced the proliferation of thymocytes, but decreased the proliferation of splenocytes. SIT enhanced the subpopulation of cytotoxic T cells in thymocytes and helper T cells in splenocytes, but did not affect the subpopulation of B220/Thy1 cells. SIT enhanced the production of γ-interferon and interleukin-2 in thymocytes, splenocytes and serum, but did not affect the production of interleukin-4. SIT suppressed the production of nitric oxide, but enhanced the lucigenin chemiluminescence and the engulfment of FITC-conjugated E. coli particles in peritoneal macrophages. These results suggest that SIT has a potent activity on the specific immunity via the cytokine secretion of Th1 cells and the non-specific immunity via the phagocytic activity of macrophages in vivo.

  • In the field of microbiology, numerous types of bacteria live dormant to survive stresses such as pasteurization and antibiotics. Some bacteria become 'persisters' by inactivating their ribosomes, allowing them to 'sleep' through stress and revive when the stress has been removed. Under stress, some cells morph into hollow, lifeless structures known as 'cell shells.' In microbiology, these cells have been confused with viable cells in the 'viable but non-culturable cells' phenomenon. Therefore, this review addressed the concept that when revival occurs, the always-viable persister cells revive, instead of the dead cell husks.
