  • The objective of this study is to select fuel/air feeders for reliable operation of BOP(Balance of Plant) system for a DMFC (direct methanol fuel cell). A 42-cell 50W DMFC stack is considered for performance comparison of selected fuel pumps and air blowers. The present stack has two serpentine anode channels with depth of 1.2 mm and rib of 1 mm and one serpentine cathode channel with depth of 1.5 mm and rib of 1 mm. The pressure drop through the stack is estimated in advance by utilizing the pre-existing loss coefficients data for various flow configurations. Then the operating points of feeders are determined at the balance point of the flow impedance curves for the channels in the DMFC stack and the selected pump and blower performance curves. After estimating the operating flow rates in the anode and cathode channels, the flow measurement with the selected feeders is performed for the comparison with the estimated flow rates. The measured results show that the discrepancy between the estimation and the measurement for the cathode is about 26%, about 3% for the anode

  • Various indirect power cycle options for a helium cooled gas cooled fast reactor (GFR) with particular focus on a supercritical $CO_2(SCO_2)$ indirect cycle are investigated as an alternative to a helium cooled direct cycle GFR. The balance of plant (BOP) options include helium-nitrogen Brayton cycle, supercritical water Rankine cycle, and $SCO_2$ recompression Brayton power cycle in three versions: (1) basic design with turbine inlet temperature of $550^{\circ}C$, (2) advanced design with turbine inlet temperature of $650^{\circ}C$ and (3) advanced design with the same turbine inlet temperature and reduced compressor inlet temperature. The indirect $SCO_2$ recompression cycle is found attractive since in addition to easier BOP maintenance it allows significant reduction of core outlet temperature, making design of the primary system easier while achieving very attractive efficiencies comparable to or slightly lower than, the efficiency of the reference GFR direct cycle design. In addition, the indirect cycle arrangement allows significant reduction of the GFR &proximate-containment& and the BOP for the $SCO_2$ cycle is very compact. Both these factors will lead to reduced capital cost.

1kW 고체산화물 연료전지(SOFC) 시스템 설계 및 자열운전 (Design and Self-sustainable Operation of 1 kW SOFC System)

  • KEPRI (Korea Electric Power Research Institute) has studied planar type solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) stacks using anode-supported cells and kW class co-generation systems for residential power generation. In this work, a 1 kW SOFC system consisted of a hot box part, a cold BOP (balance of plant) part, and a hot water reservoir. The hot box part contained a SOFC stack made up of 48 cells, a fuel reformer, a catalytic combustor, and heat exchangers. Thermal management and insulation system were especially designed for self-sustainable operation in that system. A cold BOP part was composed of blowers, pumps, a water trap, and system control units. When the 1 kW SOFC stack was tested using hydrogen at $750^{\circ}C$, the stack power was about $1.2\;kW_e$ at 30 A and $1.6\;kW_e$ at 50 A. Turning off an electric furnace, the SOFC system was operated using hydrogen and city gas without any external heat source. Under self-sustainable operation conditions, the stack power was about $1.3\;kW_e$ with hydrogen and $1.2\;kW_e$ with city gas respectively. The system also recuperated heat of about $1.1\;kW_{th}$ by making hot water.

오프그리드용 풍력-연료전지 하이브리드 시스템 개발 (Development of WT-FC Hybrid System for Off-Grid)

  • This paper describes the design and integration of the wind-fuel cell hybrid system. The hybrid system components included a wind turbine, an electrolyzer (for generation of H2), a PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell), hydrogen storage tank and BOP (Balance of Plant) system. The energy input is entirely provided by a wind turbine. A DC-DC converter controls the power input to the electrolyzer, which produces hydrogen and oxygen form water. The hydrogen used the fuel for the PEMFC. Hydrogen may be produced and stored in high pressure tank by hydrogen gas booster system. Wind conditions are changing with time of day, season and year. So, wind power is a variable energy source. The main purpose with these WT-FC hybrid system is to store hydrogen by electrolysis of water when wind conditions are good and release the stored hydrog en to supply the fuelcell when wind is low.

  • The electromagnetic characteristics of FCEVs (fuel cell electric vehicles) are much different from the existing combustion engine cars as well as hybrid, plug-in-hybrid, and pure electric vehicles due to the high voltage/current generated by a fuel cell stack which uses a compressed hydrogen gas reacted with oxygen. To operate fuel cell stack efficiently, BOP (Balance of Plant) is essential. BOP systems are used many not only for motors in water pump, air blower, and hydrogen recycling pump but also inverters for these motors. Since these systems or components are connected by high voltage cables, EMC (Electromagnetic compatibility) analysis for high voltage/current cable is the most important element to prevent the possible electric functional safety errors. In this paper, electromagnetic fields of high current/voltage cable for FCEVs is studied. From numerical analysis results, time harmonic magnetic field strength of high current/voltage cable have difference of 20~28 dB according to phase. EMI result considered ground effect of FECV at 10 m shows difference of 14.5 dB at 30 MHz and 2.8 dB at 230 MHz compared with general cable.

When a 1kW class SOFC system was operated at $750^{\circ}C$ with hydrogen, the stack power was 1.2kW at 30 A and 1.6kW at 50A. Turning off an electric furnace, the SOFC system was operated using hydrogen and city gas without any external heat source. Under self-sustainable operation conditions, the stack power was about 1.3kW with hydrogen and 1.2kW with city gas respectively. The system also recuperated heat of about 1.1kW by making hot water. Recently KEPRI developed stacks using $15{\times}15cm^2$ cells and tested them. KEPRI will develop a 5 kW class CHP system using $15{\times}15cm^2$ stacks by 2010.

  • Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) system receives great attention as a promising power device for automotive applications. For the wide commercialization, the efficiency and performance of automotive PEMFC system should be further improved in terms of total system (stack and balance of plant [BOP]). Air supply module, which is a major part of the BOP, greatly affects the efficiency of automotive PEMFC system. In this paper, a systematic study on the low-pressure automotive PEMFC system was made in an attempt to enhance the net system efficiency. This study mainly presents an investigation of the effect of blower configuration (1-blower and 2-blower) on the net system efficiency of automotive PEMFC system. For this purpose, the effect of operating pressure and cathode stoichiometry on the system efficiency was investigated with stack temperature under the fixed net system power condition. Results indicate that 1-blower system is better in system efficiency over 2-blower system under an air stoichiometry of 2. However, 2-blower system is better in system efficiency under an air stoichiometry of 3. The simulation results show that the optimum operating strategy needs to be established for various blower system configurations considering blower performance maps.

  • The international oil price now has been going up every each day, about 120 USD per a gallon April 2008, so that most of countries in the world are concern of the the shortage of petroleum and the development of new and renewable energy resources. This paper presents optimal design and operational features of stand-alone 500W PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) system which can be a substitute instead fossil fuel. The stack of PEMFC is composed of 35 laminated graphites, and a unit cell of the stack has electrical characteristics as below; 14W, 0.9V, 15A. The other components of BOP(Balance of Plant) are composed of hydrogen and nitrogen tanks, regulators, 3way solenoid valves, mass flow meters, etc.

  • A fuel cell power system among various alternative power sources has many advantages such as low-polluted, high-efficient, and heat-recyclable, thus it is now able to be up to hundreds MWh-scaled through improving feasibility and longevity of it. During the last few years of the twentieth century, much changed to stimulate new and expanding interest in fuel cell technology. This paper presents optimal design and operational features of stand-alone 500W PEMFC(Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) system which can be a substitute instead fossil fuel. 1kW급 건물용 연료전지시스템 블로워의 안전성능 평가방법에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Safety Performance Evaluation Method of Blowers for 1kW Class Stationary Fuel Cell System)

  • 우리나라는 기후변화 대응을 준비하기위해 2008년도에 수립한'국가에너지기본계획(2008-2030)'에 따라 2030년까지 신재생에너지 비중을 2.4%에서 11%까지 달성을 목표로 정하고 신재생에너지 분야를 성장시키기 위해 국가기술개발 및 산업화 전략을 수립해 추진하고 있다. 이에 발맞추어 건물용 연료전지시스템의 경우, 2006년도부터 1kW급 가정용 연료전지시스템 모니터링 사업의 일환으로 3년간 210대가 도시가스사 및 지자체 등을 중심으로 설치되어 운전되어지고 있다. 특히, 2010년부터 시범보급사업이 추진되어 올해 200대를 시작으로 2011년에 300대, 2012년에 500대가 일반가정에 보급되어질 예정이다. 하지만 현재 6천만원인 연료전지시스템 가격을 실제 보급가능한 가격인 5백만원 이하로 저감시키는 것이 현 시점에서 가장 시급한 문제로 대두되어지고 있는 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 그린홈 보급확대를 위한 건물용 연료전지의 보조기기인 블로워의 가격저감을 위한 연구의 일환으로 블로워의 안전성능 평가방법을 개발하여 보조기기의 가격저감 및 안전성을 확보하고자 한다. 1kW급 건물용 연료전지시스템의 여러 블로워 중 도시가스용 연료승압 블로워, 선택산화 공기 블로워, 버너 공기 블로워 및 캐소드 공기 블로워의 안전성능 평가방법을 제시함으로서, 국내 블로워 제조사의 설계방향을 제시하고 연료전지시스템의 안전성을 확인하고자 한다. 특히, 내구성, 기밀, 가혹조건시험 및 소음, 진동, 습도, 온도와 같은 내주위환경시험 등의 평가결과를 제조사에 feedback하여 안전성능 개선에 이바지하고자 한다.
