  • Sludge Returned CMAS process was applied to treat the wastewater from electric accessory manufacturing company while this type of wastewater was usually treated by chemical process. This result show that the removal rate of TCOD was about 70-80% regardless of hydraulic retention time, On the contrary, the removal rate of BOD was abtained in a range of 77-92% depending on hydraulic retention time. In order to remove more than 80% of organic materials with the proposed process, the F/M ratio should be maintained below 0.17. In this case, the calculated value of organic removal rate, Km, was calculated to be 1.26 hr$^{-1}$, and the ratio of cell synthesis/total energy was 0.32 and 0.26 for COD and BOD base, respectively. The yield coefficient was calculated to be 0.242 and the half velocity coefficient was 0.3 hr$^{-1}$. The value of endogenous respiration coefficient was 0.02 hr$^{-1}$. The measured effluent BOD concentration, MLSS concentration in aeration tank, oxygen uptake rate, and sludge production were matched relatively well with the calculated values using above coefficients, In order to optimize the dewatering of sludge, the hydraulic retention time was recommended to be 15. 6 hrs. These results indicate that the wastewater from an eletric accessory manufacturing company can be treated safely with a biological process.

  • A constructed wetland with the aerobic tank and anaerobic/anoxic tank connected in series was employed in order to treat highly polluted stream water. The aerobic tank was maintained aerobic with a continuous supply of air through the natural air draft system. Five pilot plants having different residence times were employed together to obtain parameters for the best performances of the wetland. BOD and COD removals at the aerobic tank followed the first order kinetics. COD removal rate constants were slightly lower than BOD. The temperature dependence of COD (θ = 1.0079) and BOD (θ = 1.0083) was almost the same, but the temperature dependence (θN) of T-N removal was 1.0189. The SS removal rate was as high as 98% and the removal efficiency showed a tendency to increase with increasing hydraulic loading rate (Q/A). The main mechanism of BOD and COD removal at the anaerobic/anoxic tank was entirely different from that of the aerobic tank. BOD and COD were supplied as the carbon source for biological denitrification. T-P was believed to be removed though the cation exchange between orthophosphate and gravels within the anaerobic and anoxic tanks. The wetland could successfully be operated without being blocked by the filtered solid which subsequently decomposed at an extremely fast rate.

  • A sedimentation basin for agricultural water quality improvement was researched to analyze the water quality purification characteristics. The sedimentation basin constructed at the inlet of Gamdon reservoir in Muan-gun, Jeollanam-do was selected as the research field of this study. The surface area of the sedimentation basin is $34,000m^2$, volume is $122,000m^3$, and hydraulic retention time is 0.3hr~7.3day. The average influent loading of SS was 156.6kg-SS/d, and the effluent loading was 67.5kg-SS/d with the average removal rate of 56.9%. The average influent loadings of BOD and COD were 33.0kg-BOD/d and 60.3kg-COD/d respectively, and the effluent loadings were 26.4kg-BOD/d and 48.6kg-COD/d with the average removal rate of 20.1% and 19.3% respectively. Therefore, the results of this study show that a sedimentation basin can purify SS and organic matters. The average influent loadings of T-N and T-P were 28.7kg-TN/d and 2.97kg-TP/d respectively, and the effluent loadings were 16.3kg-TN/d and 1.41kg-TP/d with the average removal rate of 43.0% and 52.6% respectively. In conclusion, the overall results of this study show that a sedimentation basin is a feasible alternative to purify organic matters and nutrients.

  • Using rotating biological contactor(RBC) with artificial endogenous stage and aerobic fixed biofilm reactor(AFBR), organic material removal and biological nitrification of piggery wastewater has been studied at a pilot plant. RBC was operated in the endogenous phase at a interval of every 25 days. The concentration of COD, BOD and TKN in influent wastewater were from 2,940 to 3,800 mg/L, from 1,190 to 1,850 mg/L and from 486 to 754 mg/L respectively. The maximum active biomass content represented as VSS per unit aera was $2.0mg/cm$^{2}$ and biofilm dry density of $17mg/cm^{3}$ was observed at biofilm thickness of $900{\;}{\mu}m$. It was observed that the pilot scale RBC/AFBR process exhibited 72 percentage to 93 percentage of BOD removal, In order to obtain more than 90 percentage of BOD removal, the organic loading rate to the RBC/AFBR process should be maintained less than $0.09{\;}m^{3}/m^{2}{\cdot}day(125.9g{;\}BOD/m^{3}{\cdot}d$. The TKN removal efficiencies was from 45.5 to 90.9 percentage according to vary influent loading rate, It was estimated that the RBC/AFBR process consumed approximately 6.2 mg/L(as $CaCO_{3}$) of alkalinity per 1 mg/L of $NH_{3}$-N oxidized as the nitrification took piace.

  • An efficient Treatment of animal wastewater is one of the hot issues for preventing the environmental pollution. It should be established the design parameter in order to purify the animal wastewater. A test is carried on in the pilot plant as a simplified activated sludge process. A vibration sieve separator is deviced to keep the pollution load constant by means of separation of solid matter. The BOD removal efficiency of the vibration sieve showed over 50%. As the test results, the BOD contents of the influent was in average of 3,000 mg/I and that of the effluent 85 mg/I. So, the BOD removal rate showed 97% in average. The SS-contents in the primary chamber was about 3,300 mg/I and that of effluent 92 mg/I. The SS removal efficiency showed 97%. The removal rate of total nitrogen and phosphore were in average of 82% respectively. Carrying out in winter season, it showed relatively good results; The design parameter approved in this test can be applied to the full-time farmers.

  • This study was performed to evaluate an applicability of the SMMCMAS system for reuse of the sewage from spa area and was operated to HLR(Hydraulic loading rate) of 211.3 to 126.8 $\ell$/㎥/d. The operating HRT(Hydraulic retention time) ranges were 2.5 to 1.5 hours. Conclusions are as follows; At the optimum HLR of 158.5 $\ell/\m^2$/d (HRT of 2.0 hours), the maximum BOD removal efficiency was 94% and the effluent BOD concentration was 1.1mg/$\ell$ in result. As the HLR was increased to 211.3 $\ell/\m^2$/d, BOD removal efficiency was decreased to 75% and BOD removal efficiency was also reduced to 74% at lower HLR of 126.8 $\ell/\m^2$/d. It shows that the maximum BOD removal efficiency occurs at an optimum HLR value and that the removal efficiency decreases when the HLR is either higher or lower than the optimum value. Sludge production rates were ranged 0.01 to 0.24gVSS/gBODrem/d and accomplished to 0.01gVSS/gBODrem/d at the optimum HLR of 158.5 $\ell/\m^2$/d.

  • The effect of a salinity on the performance of a biological nutrient removal system was investigated using a model SBR(Sequencing Bach Reactor) system. The system was operated at a 12hr, 18hr, 24hr, and 36hr HRT with a salinity level of 20,000mg/L and compared with a system similarly operated with fresh water. The influent salinity level of 8,000 mg/L does not have a significant effect on BOD removal efficiency, there is a noticeable decrease in BOD removal rate from 10,000 mg Cl-/L. The Nitrogen could be removed from the saline wastewater with the same efficiency as for the fresh water because of low C/N ratio in anoxic period. The excess biological phosphorous removal is highly affected by the increase in the influent salinity. The efficiency is decreased from 96.6% to 43.4% when the influent salinity is increased from 0 to 20,000mg/L.

  • Field experimnet of constructed wetland for rural wastewater treatment was performed from July 1998 to April 1999 including winter to examine the seasonal effect on the wetland performance. The system worked without freezing even under $-10^{\circ}C$ of air temperature as long as watewater was flowing. BOD removal rates varied in similar pattern as the air temperature, and winter performance was relatively lower than that in the growing season. However, removing performance during winter was still significant, and BOD removal rates were almost the the same as in the growing season. SS removal rate was relativelyless affected by temmperature, but lower decay rate during the winter can result in accumulation of the SS in the system, which releases constituents in the next spring and can affect whole system performance. The winter removal rates of nutrients like T-N and T-P were decreased about half compared to the growing season and low temperature. To maintain stabilized wetland performanced including winter time, supplying minimum heating for plants could be an alternative in field application. Experimental data was compared with NADB(North Americal Wetlands for Water Quality treatment database), and general performance of the system was within the reasonable range. The pollutant loading and effluent concentration of the experimented system were in high margin. Base on the experiment and databases, the required effluent water quality could be achieved if loading rate adjusted as ilulstrated in the database.

  • This study was carried out to obtain the optimal operating parameter on organic matters and nutrient removal of mixed wastewater which was composed of sewage and stable wastewater using SBR. A laboratory scale SBR was operated with An/Ae(Anaerobic/Aerobic) ratio of 3/3, 2/4 and 4/2(3.5/2.5) at organic loading rate of 0.14 to 0.27 kgBOD/$m^3$/d. TCOD/SCOD ratio of mixed wastewater was 3, so the important operating factor depended upon the resolving the particulate parts of wastewater. Conclusions of this study were as follows: 1) For mixed wastewater, BOD and COD removal efficiencies were 93-96% and 85-89%, respectively. It was not related to each organic loading rate, whereas depended on An/Ae ratio. During Anarobic period, the amount of SCOD consumption was very little, because ICOD in influent was converted to SCOD by hydrolysis of insoluble matter. 2) T-N removal efficiencies of mixed wastewater were 55-62% for Exp. 1, 66-76% for Exp. 2, and 67-81% for Exp. 3, respectively. It was found that nitrification rate was increased according to organic concentration in influent increased. Therefore, the nitrification rate seemed to be achieved by heterotrophs. During anoxic period, denitrification rate depended on SCOD concentration in aerobic period and thus, was not resulted by endogenous denitrification. However, the amount of denitrification during anaerobic period were 3.5-14.1 mg/cycle, and that of BOD consumed were 10-40 mg/cycle. 3) For P removal of mixed wastewater, EBPR appeared only Mode 3($3^*$). It was found that the time in which ICOD was converted to VFA should be sufficient. For mode 3 in each Exp., P removal efficiencies were 74, 87, and 81%, respectively. But for 45-48 of COD/TP ratio in influent, P concentration in effluent was over 1 mg/L. It was caused to a large amount of ICOD in influent. However, as P concnetration in influent was increased, the amounts of P release and uptake were increased linearly.

  • This study aims at a proposal of the plan that can improve raw water quality by an experimental study using influent water of Nak-dong river, which has been used as raw water for drinking in U-city, through the establishment of the submerged biofilter process PILOT PLANT of media packing channel method. From the analysis of removal efficiency for each water quality item of the collected sample, following results are obtained. First of all, the removal rate of suspended material, BOD, COD, T-N, TOC, turbidity, and $NH_3$ -N appear 82%, 78%, 42%, 15%, 57%, 43%, 54%, and 55% respectively and it is known that the submerged biofilter process of media packing channel method takes effects on water quality improvement from the above analysis results of water treatment efficiency. And the analyzed results for water temperature, residence time, and activities of microorganism, which can be the factors affect on water quality improvement, are as follows. 1) The removal rate variation of SS, BOD, and COD attendant on water temperature change is examined and it is known that the removal rate increases at $13^{\circ}C$ or above. 2) The removal rate of SS, BOD, and COD attendant on residence time is most active in the range of 0~18hr, 0~1.8hr, 0~2.7hr respectively, so it is found that the removal rate becomes smaller after 2.7hr. 3) From the examination of microorganism activity with the abundance of normal bacteria, it is found that the floating bacteria decrease as the flow distance from raw water inflow point of PILOT PLANT increases, and the adhesive bacteria have no concern with the flow distance. And it its known that the biomass of fine algae decreases as the flow distance from the raw water inflow point of PILOT PLANT increases from the examination with Chl-a.
