  • The Keum river has been utilized for drinking water supply of several city including Kunsan city and is deepening pollution state due to numerous municipal and industrial discharges. The concentration BOD in river is affected by the organic loading from a tributary and the algae biomass that largely happen to under eutrophication state. In the eutrophic water mass such as the Keum river, the autochthonous BOD was very important part for making a decision of water quality management, because it was accounted for majority of the total BOD. The predict of water quality has important meaning for management of water quality pollution of the Keum river. The purpose of this study will manage and predict water quality of the Keum river using QUAL-2E model considering the autochthonous BOD. The estimation of autochthonous BOD represented that the relationship between BOD and chlorophyll a. The regression equation was shown to be autochthonous BOD=$\beta$(sub)5$\times$chlorophyll a. The results of this study may be summarized as followed; The QUAL-2E model was calibrated with the data surveyed in the field of the study area in June, 1998. The calculated value by QUAL-2E model are in good agree to measured value within relative error of 7.80~20.33%. Especially, in the case of the considering autochthonous BOD, the calculated value of BOD were fairly good coincided with the observed values within relative error of 15%. But the case of not considering autochthonous BOD, relative error of BOD was shown to be 43.2%. In order to attain II grade of water quality standard in Puyo station which has a intake facility of water supply, we reduced to the pollutants loading of tributaries. In the case of removed 100% BOD of tributaries, the BOD of Puyo station was 4.07mg/$\ell$, belong to III grade of water quality standard. But in the case of removed 88% nutrient of tributaries, it was satisfied to II grade of water quality standard as below 3mg/$\ell$ of BOD. For estimation of autochthonous BOD in Keum river, we are performed simulating in accordance with reduction of nutrient load(50~100%) under conditions removal 90% organic load. Occupancy of autochthonous BOD according to nutrient loading reductions were varied from 25.97~79.51%. Occupancy of autochthonous BOD was shown to be a tendency to increasing in accordance with reduction of nutrient loading. Showing the above results, the nutrient that one of the growing factor of algae was important role in decision of BOD in the Keum river. For the water quality management of the Keum river, therefore, it is necessary to considering autochthonous BOD and to construction of advanced sewage treatment plant for nutrient removal.

  • The Soysauce wastewater removal characteristics of submerged biofilters filled with two filter media respectively were experimentally examined with constant temperature, pH value and variable BOD loading and recirculation ratio. The decreasing order of BOD removal is Netring(random plastic media), cubic wire meshes(plastic module). This is mainly due to the media characteristics such as void ratio, specific surface area and media shapes. The BOD removal ratio decreases with increasing $BOD_5$/ volumetric loading rate, and the loading rate for the BOD removal over 85% is lower than 1.5kg$BOD_5$ 5/$m^3$d for the plastic media of Netring and cubic wire meshes. The $BOD_5$ removal rate increases with the recirculation ratio, but the rate of increase become smaller as the recirculation ratio increases over 20. When $BOD_5$ volumetric loading is 1.5kg$BOD_5$/$m^3$d, the required recirculation ratio to obtain 85% BOD$_{5}$ removal is about 20 for Netring and it was about 30 for cubic wire meshes.s.

  • In order to estimate interfering effects of mercury and lead on biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), BOD in 18 effluent samples were measured under three different concentrations of mercury and lead. The results obtained were as follows: 1. Biochemical oxygen demand(BOD) was decreased under the presence of mercury and lead, with parallel correlation of mercury concentration. 2. High correlations were noted between original BOD concentration and decreasing amount of BOD when concentrations of mercury or lead were increased. 3. When the lead concentration was high, the close correlation was observed between total organic carbon(TOC) and decreasing amount of BOD. 4. There was a negative correlation between TOC/BOD ratio and decreasing amount of BOD when the mercury concentrations were high.

  • The TMDL, the watershed-oriented water quality management policy, was introduced to inhibit the total amount of pollutant loading generation, and to develop the region environmentally friendly. However, despite the implementation of TMDL, the water quality of Nam river downstream has worsened continuously since 2005. Diverse pollution sources such as cities and industrial zone are scattered around the Nam river. Eutrophication are caused due to deterioration of water quality by low velocity. BOD concentrations in the eutrophic waters affected by the incoming BOD and the autochthonous BOD by the production of phytoplankton. In this study, the quantitative relation of incoming BOD and autochthonous BOD was analyzed for water quality management. The influence of autochthonous BOD was analyzed using QUALKO2 and QUAL2E. Considering the effects of Chl.a, BOD concentration from QUALKO2 model simulations is higher than BOD concentration from QUAL2E model. The results of QUALKO2 showed higher correlation with the measured data. Autochthonous BOD needs to be managed to solve the water pollution problem of Nam river downstream, which is looking for ways to reduce Chl.a by using the increase of the dam outflow and the improvement of the water quality from WWTP.

  • Forestry and agricultural land uses constitute 85% of Korea and these land uses are typically mixed in many watersheds. Biological Oxygen Demand (BOD) concentration is a primary factor for managing water qualities of the water resources in Korea. BOD loadings from diffuse sources, however, not well monitored yet. This study aims to assess BOD loadings from diffuse sources and their affecting factors to conserve quality of water resources. Event Mean Concentration (EMC) of BOD was calculated based on the monitoring data of forty rainfall events at four agricultural-forestry watersheds. Exceedence cumulative probability of BOD EMCs were plotted to show agricultural activities in a watershed impacts on the magnitude of EMCs. Prediction equation for each rainfall event was proposed to estimate BOD EMCs: $EMC_{BOD}(mg/L)=EXP(0.413+0.0000001157{\times}$(discharged runoff volume in $m^3$)+0.018${\times}$(ratio of agricultural land use to total watershed area).

  • The biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) test is widely used to determine the pollution strength of water, to evaluate the performance of wastewater treatment plants and to judge compliance with discharge permits. However, nitrification is a cause of significant errors in measuring BOD, particularly when a large population of nitrifying organisms is existing in water such as effluents from biological treatment plants. In order to investigate the amount of nitrogenous oxygen demand (NOD), BOD with and without inhibitor was measured as samples in the biological treatment plants. About 81% of effluent BOD from the biological treatment plant used in this experiment was comprised of NOD. In the case of influents, the NOD accounted for about 9% of BOD. The inhibited 5-day BOD (Carbonaceous BOD) test must be considered in evaluating the performance of wastewater treatment plant and judging compliance with discharge permit limitations.

  • A yeast loading biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) sensor was designed and constructed to quickly measure the concentration of biologically assimilable organic substances dissolved in water as BOD values to feed back to the waste water treating processes. The sensitivity of the BOD sensor reached maximum at around pH 7.0 and $30^{\circ}C$ where yeast showed the highest assimilation activity. Biomass also affected the sensor output, and biomass of $ 0.14\;mg/cm^2$ on the dialysis membrane appeared to be the optimum cell mass level. The sensitivity of the sensor depended on the kinds of pollutants and increased considerably when the yeast was preincubated in the solution of respective pollutants before loading on the sensor.

  • Drought is a natural disaster that can have serious social impacts. Drought's impact ranges from water supply for humans to ecosystems, but the impact of drought on river water quality requires careful investigation. In general, drought occurs meteorologically and is classified as agricultural drought, hydrological drought, and environmental drought. In this study, the BOD environmental drought is defined using the bivariate copula joint probability distribution model between the meteorological drought index and the river BOD, and based on this, the environmental drought condition index (EDCI-BOD) was proposed. The results of examining the proposed index using past precipitation and BOD observation data showed that EDCI-BOD expressed environmental drought well in terms of river BOD water quality. In addition, by classifying the calculated EDCI-BOD into four levels, namely, 'attention', 'caution', 'alert', and 'seriousness', a practical monitoring stage for environmental drought of BOD was constructed. We further estimated the sensitivity of the stream BOD to meteorological drought, and through this, we could identify the stream section in which the stream BOD responded relatively more sensitively to the occurrence of meteorological drought. The results of this study are expected to provide information necessary for river BOD management in the event of meteorological droughts.
