  • The concept of an "intelligent building" received significant attention from academic, industry and standard development organizations when technically termed a building management system (BMS). Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) and their recent development enhanced monitoring and control applications for the building's areas. This paper surveys and analyzes advantages of the main current and emerging approaches that may be fit for BMS. Specifically, we discuss challenges including interoperability, integration, overhead, and bandwidth limitation of WSNs in BMS. Based on analyses, we highlight the advantages of an IP-based and RESTful architecture approach as the most suitable solution for BMS using WSNs (BMS-WSN). The paper also describes our future direction and design for BMS-WSN based on these advantages. The purpose is to enable interaction of users with BMS-WSN in the same way as with any website while ensuring energy efficiency. A test-bed implementation and evaluation of a BMS application is also introduced in this paper to demonstrate the feasibility and benefits of IP-based and RESTful architecture for BMS.

  • The service quality with the various building equipments tends to depend on the individual superintendent's capability and efforts generally and this often lead to poor maintenances and managements of them. N-BMS(Networked Building Management System), proposed in this study, is a new type of building management method, which links principal equipments within many buildings into a communication network and carries out several significant missions such as fault detection, deterioration diagnosis and control the equipments and so on, as well as monitoring which is the main and unique purpose of the conventional BMS. How to construct the N-BMS was considered to keep performance of equipments high and thus to save energy and resource. LCC(Life Cycle Cost) based analysis was also performed in order to verify the effects of some maintenance and management works for the building HVAC systems.

  • The computerized management system for bridges is required due to the increased service life and number of bridges. This paper provides information and communication technology (ICT) - based bridge management system (BMS) to enable life cycle management through a comparative study with the development trend and function of domestic and foreign BMSs. BMS developed as an operation system combined an internet and mobile program, and was based on GIS technology and an object-based information management system. BMS supports the establishment of long-term strategies and short-term plans based on predicting the life-cycle performance profile and the necessary budget by object-based informatization for the whole life-cycle information of bridges. Useful knowledge information for supporting decision making was derived from the life-cycle management strategies establishment for approximately 6,000 existing bridges. BMS was developed to be applicable to all nationwide road bridges. In addition, it can be used practically to maintain the performance based on accurate maintenance result management, reducing cost by reasonable budget management, and enhancing the convenience and reliability of field data collection.

  • This article presents practical advice regarding the implementation and management of an impeccable Building Management System. The BMS was introduced to the series of computerized systems including manufacturing, storage, distribution, and quality control. Recently revised GMP regulation is requesting an improvement in drug product quality regulatory system by computer system validation. Quality is critical to guarantee the efficacy and the safety of drugs and is approved in the evaluation process after the audit trail application. HVAC parameter monitoring system will record the identity of operators entering or confirming critical data. Authority to amend entered data should be restricted to nominated persons. Any alteration to an entry of critical data should be authorized in advance and recorded with the reason for the change.
