  • LP-BM5 murine leukemia retrovirus induces the excessive oxidative stress and immune dysfunction leading to B cell leukemia and murine AIDS with cytokine dysfunction. In the present study, the immune restoratory effect of antioxidant hormone dedydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) was investigated in the primary splenocytes from LP-BM5 retrovirus-infected C57BL/6 mice. DHEAS significantly increased T and B cell response to mitogen and normalized the unbalanced production of Th1/Th2 type cytokines. In particular, both protein and mRNA expression of IL-4, IL-6, and $TNF-\alpha$ were down-regulated by DHEAS treatment whereas IL-2 and $IFN-\gamma$ level were increased. This result suggests that DHEAS directly or indirectly regulates the gene expression of Th1/Th2 type cytokines in transcription level. In addition, DHEAS treatment decreased the hepatic lipid peroxidation and preserved vitamin E level in liver cells. These results suggested that DHEAS could effectively prevent immune dysfunction by regulating cytokine secretion and preventing the oxidative stress in murine AIDS.

  • The use of commercial silkworm hybrids resistant to important silkworm diseases is economical and better option particularly in tropical areas. This necessitated the evolution of productive bivoltine silkworm breeds non-susceptible to $BmDNV_1$. Non-susceptibility to $BmDNV_1$, infection was found to be controlled by a single recessive gene, nsd-l or a dominant gene, Nid-l. A major dominant/recessive gene confers resistance to $BmDNV_1$, from potent donor parents have been transferred to 10 productive but susceptible bivoltine silkworm strains through conventional breeding methods. By utilizing these breeds prepared 25 hybrids $(5{\times}5)$ and hybrid evaluation was carried out to identify most promising hybrids resistant to $BmDNV_1$. All these hybrids are inoculated with $BmDNV_1$ inoculum along with productive control hybrid $CSR2{\times}CSR4$ and reared under standard rearing procedure. Based on inoculated rearing and test reeling results, two most promising hybrids $(CSR18DR{\times}CSR29DR\;and\;CSR21DR{\times}CSR50DR)$ were selected for commercial exploitation. The selected hybrids have shown a survival rate of >85% with productive traits, where as control hybrid have shown 11.1% survival with inferior cocoon traits. The methodologies adopted were discussed.

  • This paper describes the design for the resistive FET mixer with low If for the 4-Ch DBF(Digital Beam Forming) receiver This DBF receiver based on the direct conversion method is generally suitable for high-speed wireless mobile communications. A radio frequency(RF), a local oscillator(LO) and an intermediate frequency(If) considered in this research are 2.09 GHz, 2.08 CHz and 10 MHz, respectively. This mixer is composed of band pass filter, a low pass filter and a DC bias circuit. Super low noise HJ FET of NE3210S01 is considered in design. The RE input power, LO input power and Vcs are used -10 dBm, 6 dBm and -0.4 V, respectively. In the 4-Ch resistive FET mixer, the measured If and harmonic components of 10 MHe, 20 MHz and 2.087 CHz are about -19.2 dBm, -66 dBm and -48 dBm, respectively The If output power observed at each channel of 10 MHz is about -19.2 dBm and it is higher 28.8 dBm than the maximum harmonic component of 2.087 CHz. Each If output spectrum of the 4-Ch is observed almost same value and it shows a good agreement with the prediction.

  • By calculating the spectral efficiency of symmetric balance incomplete block design(BIBD) codes satisfying BER=$10^{-9}$, it can be found that ideal BIBD code design with m=2 and various q's is effective when effective power is high($P_{sr}=-10$ dBm). But BIBD code design with q > 2 and various m's can be effective when effective power is low($P_{sr}=-25$ dBm).

  • Degradation of the optical communication system due to the stimulated Brillouin scattering effect in the optical fiber is measured, and its suppression is demonstrated. In the externally modulated 2.5 Gb/s transmission experiment, bit error rate is increased due to the stimulated Brillouin scattering effect when the signal power (linewidth 3 MHz) incident into the dispersion shifted fiber is larger than 10 dBm. SBS effect is suppressed completely, up to 15 dBm of transmission power, by broadening the source linewidth to 200 MHz.

  • The generating functions of the divisor function σs(n) = Σ0<d|n ds are quasimodular forms. In this paper, we find the basis of the space of quasimodular forms of weight 6 on Γ0(10) consisting of Eisenstein series and η-quotients. Then we evaluate the convolution sum Σak+bl+cm=n σ(k)σ(l)σ(m) with lcm(a, b, c) = 10 and Σal+bm=n lσ(l)σ(m) and Σal+bm=n σ3(l)σ(m) with lcm(a, b) = 10.

  • Human bone marrow or human umbilical cord vein derived-mesenchymal stem cells (hBM-MSCs or hUC-MSCs) have known as a potentially useful cell type for clinical therapeutic applications. We investigated two-pore domain potassium (K2P) channels in these cells. K2P channels play a major role in setting the resting membrane potential in many cell types. Among them, TREK1 is targets of hydrogen, hypoxia, polyunsaturated fatty acids, antidepressant, and neurotransmitters. We investigated whether hBM-MSCs and hUC-MSCs express functional TREK1 channel using RT-PCR analysis and patch clamp technique. Potassium channel with a single channel conductance of 100 pS was found in hUC-MSCs and BM-MSCs and the channel was activated by membrane stretch (-5 mmHg ~ -15 mmHg), arachidonic acid ($10{\mu}M$) and intracellular acidosis (pH 6.0). These electrophysiological properties were similar to those of TREK1. Our results suggest that TREK1 is functionally present in hBM-MSCs and hUC-MSCs, where they contribute to its resting membrane potential.

  • Cochlea is well known to have the ability to analyze a wide frequency and this ability seems to be caused to the Basilar Membrane(BM) configuration. However, the relationship between the Cochlea frequency-position map is not clear. In this paper, the three-dimensional BM Model was made using the Finite Element method. Then, an attempt was made to examine the influence of the BM configuration on the Cochlea frequency-position map. Theoretical consideration reveals that the wide frequency-position of Cochlea is achieved by not only the BM configuration change along the length of the Cochlea but also the change of the Young's module of the BM along the length of the Cochlea.
