To assess the antioxidative activity of 12 medicinal plants on lipid peroxidation, twelves traditional medicinal plants extracted with 95% methanol were investigated the antioxidative activity using DPPH, thiocyanate acid method, and thiobarbituric acid (TBA) methods. Out of 12 medicinal plants extracted with methanol, the extraction yields of Sedum kamtschaticum was the highest values (49.46%) among them and Geranicum sibiricum, Saururus chinensis root (R), Agrimonia pilosa leaf (L), Agrimonia pilosa root was the lowest value (9.97%). Radical scavenging effect of the selected traditional medicinal plants extracted from different extract solution were examined by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical method. Antioxidative activity of methanolic extracts was higher than those of ethanol and n-hexane extracts. Scavenging effects in Sedum kamtaschaticum (R) determined by DPPH radical showed the highest among the 12 plants. The antioxidative effects of the first four medicinal plants were similar to those of butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), and butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), but higher than that of tocopherol, which was used as a handled control. Antioxidative effects of each indicated concentration of the methanolic extracts on linoleic acid by thiocyanate method was the highest in Sedum kamtschaticum and followed by Geum japonicum and Agrimonia pilosa and their antioxidative effect were similar to those of BHA, and BHT, but higher than that of tocopherol. Antioxidative effects of the selected medicinal methanolic extract on linoleic acid by thiocyanate acid method were examined for 15 days. Peroxidation of control and tocopherol group occurred on days 5 and 9, respectively, but BHA, BHT, selected medicinal methanolic extract group did not occur until on day 15. Antioxidative effects of the selected medicinal methanolic extract on linoleic acid by TBA method were examined for 15 days. Antioxidative activity was similar to those obtained by thiocyanate acid method.
The effects of butylated hydroxyanisole and butylated hydroxytoluene on the immune status in normal male were evaluated. They exhibited significant decrease in the circulating leukocyte counts. Relative spleen and thymus weights were slightly decreased, but not stratistically significant. These were, however, significant liver hypertrophies in theier exposed mice. Splenic IgM PFCs per one million cells in 1/20 LD50 BHA and BHT exposed mice were significantly reduced IgM PFCs per spleen were similar tothose of control, except in 1/20 LD50 BHA exposed mice, where they were significantly suppressed. The precise nature of the inhibition is not clear. Direct cytotoxicity is not responsible for the depressed antibody response, even following relatively high doses of them, because the changes in spleen cellularity are not significant. Both substances, however, did not show any effects on the arthus reaction and delayed hypersensitivity reaction induced by heat aggreagted bovine serum albumin, and in vivo phagocytosis of colloidal carbon. In the light of the present results, in vivo antibody response as well as in vitro, may be sensitive to BHA of the present results, in vivo antibody response as well as in vitro, amy be sensitie to BHA and BHT. Further elucidation of the precise nature of antibody suppression in their exposed mice, is warranted.
The purposes of this study were to analyze the antioxidative effects and antimicrobial activity of Omija. Total phenol contents of Omija extracted with ethanol and water were $53.4{\pm}2.2tannic\;acid\;equivalent/mg$, and $47.9{\pm}2.1tannic\;acid\; equivalent/mg$, respectively. Total flavonoid contents of Omija extracted with ethanol and water were $16.3{\pm}1.1naringin\;equivalent/mg$, and $13.1{\pm}1.4naringin\;equivalent/mg$, respectively. Electron donating ability of ethanol extract ($1,000{\mu}g/mL$) of Omija was $5.1{\pm}0.4%$. This result was lower than the antioxidant vitamin (ascorbic acid: $96.4{\pm}0.6%$) and artificial antioxidant BHT ($70.0{\pm}0.5%$). Nitrite-scavenging abilities of Omija were lower than ascorbic acid and BHT. SOD-like activities of Omija extracts, natural antioxidant, and artificial antioxidant at 5 mg/mL were in the other of ascorbic acid ($99.0{\pm}0.5%$) > BHT ($72.6{\pm}0.5%$) > ethanol extract ($16.3{\pm}0.4%$) > water extract ($14.4{\pm}0.3%$). The order of OH radical scavenging activities of Omija extracts and natural antioxidant at 5 mg/mL was ascorbic acid ($98.9{\pm}0.6%$) > tocopherol ($85.4{\pm}0.6%$) > water extract ($59.1{\pm}0.5%$) > ethanol extract ($33.1{\pm}0.3%$). The results show that the antimicrobial effects of Omija could not be detected at both concentrations and extraction methods.
Aerial parts of Compositae plants were harvested from pastures and crop fields of Sunchon area at vegetative stage to determine their antioxidant activity. Among 13 species, three species Taraxacum officinate, Breea segeta, and Artemisia princeps were selected as potent plant materials. Through measurement by Rancimat and TBARS method, antioxidative effect was the greatest in Taraxacum officinate among plant species. Antioxidative index (AI) investigated by Rancimat showed Siegesbeckia glabrescensi was 1.51 while commonly-used antioxidants, BHT and ascorbic acid were 3.86 and 2.43, respectively. The highest TBARS value was also obtained from Taraxacum officinate(0.18) at 4 weeks after storage, indicating the plant had the strongest antioxidant activity during long time. Even though TBARS value (0.18) in Taraxacum officinate sample showed lower in all plants than two synthetic antioxidants(0.05-0.09), antioxidant activities of the plants were much higher than that of a control (1.01). The results suggest that the plants have antioxidant potential as an alternative natural antioxidant based on natural plant resources.

NEMO basic support is a solution that provides network mobility in the Internet topology. Yet, when multiple mobile networks are nested, this basic solution suffers ken pinball-routing and a severe routing overhead. Therefore, several solutions for route optimization in a nested mobile network have already been suggested by the IETF NEMO WG. However, the current paper proposes Regional Information-based Route Optimization (RIRO) in which mobile routers maintain a Nested Router List (NRL) to obtain next-hop information, and packets are transmitted with a new routing header called an RIRO Routing Header (RIRO-RH). We showed that RIRO had the minimum packet overhead that remained constant, irrespective of how deep the mobile network was nested, in comparison with two earlier proposed schemes - Reverse Routing Header (RRH) and Bi-directional tunnel between HA and Top-Level mobile router (BHT).
Oleoresin, 6-gingerol and 6,10-gingerol: 6-paradol= 1 : 1 mixture were extracted from ginger (Zingi-her of ficinale Roscoe) and changes of its antioxidant activity by heat-treatment were studed. Oleoresin was extracted with Ethanol-Ether and 6,10-gingerol : 6-paradol(1 : 1) and 6-gingerol were extracted with Hexane and Hexan : Ether= 1 : 1, respectively, and identified on the Thin-layer Chromatograpy (TLC) plate with the solvent system of Hexane Ether(1 : 4, v/v). And oleoresin was heat-treated during 0, 10, 30, 60, 120 minutes, and 6-gingercl and 6,10-gingerol . 6-paradol=1 : 1 were heat-treated during 0, 5, 10, 20, 40 minutes, respectively, at 140$^{\circ}C$ dry oven. To compare with antioxidant activity, oleoresins were added into soybean oil at 3fo level, 6-gingerol and 6,10-gingerol : 6-paradol= 1 : 1 at 0.1% level, BHT and TBHQ at 0.02% level, respectively. All the substrates treated were stored in a incubator at 45 2$^{\circ}C$ condition. The oxidative stability was estimated by the analysises of peroxide value and conjugated diene value during storage. The results were as follows: Antioxidant activity of oleoresins were considerably high and by heat-treatment were not decreased. 6-paradol was not show the antioxidant activity. 6,10-gingerol : 6-paradol=1 : 1 provided poor protection for soybean oil. Antioxidant activity of 6-gingerol was higher than 6,10-gingerol : 6-paradol=1 : 1 and by heat-treat-ment antioxidant activity was directly decreased. Relative antioxidant effectiveness(RAE) of each antio-xidant was compared. RhR was found to decrease as follow : TBHQ>oleoresin》BHT TBHQ》BHT>6-gingerol》6,10-gingerol : 6-paradol=1 : 1.
The aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro antioxidant profiles of genistein and other isoflavonoids. The reactivity of genistein towards stable radical and reactive oxygen species including ${\bullet}\;ABTS^+$, ${\bullet}{O_2}^-$, $H_2O_2$ and HOCl has been investigated, and the effects were compared with other isoflavonoids and antioxidants. All the tested isoflavonoids showed remarkable ${\bullet}\;ABTS^+$ scavenging activity and genistein was more potent than BHT and ascorbic acid. Genistein was more effective in scavenging hypochlorous acid than superoxide and hydrogen peroxide. At $10\;{\mu}M$ concentrations of genistein and genistin showed about 90% inhibitory effect on HOCl, while BHT and ascorbic acid showed lower than 50% inhibitory effect. Moreover, genistein could inhibit plasmid DNA cleavage, protein degradation and cell death from HOCl attack, while daidzein, BHT and ascorbic acid could not protect them effectively. These results suggest that genistein is a more potent radical scavenger than other isoflavonoids, and it can remarkably reduce cellular damage induced by HOCl.

Carotenoids, which have biologically beneficial effects and occur naturally in microorganisms and plants, are pigments widely applied in the food, cosmetics and pharmaceutical industries. The compound 4,4'-diaponeurosporene is a C30 carotenoid produced by some Lactobacillus species, and Lactobacillus plantarum is the main species producing it. In this study, the antioxidant activity of 4,4'-diaponeurosporene extracted from L. plantarum subsp. plantarum KCCP11226 was examined. Maximum carotenoid content (0.74 ± 0.2 at A470) was obtained at a relatively low temperature (20℃). The DPPH radical scavenging ability of 4,4'-diaponeurosporene (1 mM) was approximately 1.7-fold higher than that of butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), a well-known antioxidant food additive. In addition, the ABTS radical scavenging ability was shown to be 2.3- to 7.5-fold higher than that of BHT at the range of concentration from 0.25 mM to 1 mM. The FRAP analysis confirmed that 4,4'-diaponeurosporene (0.25 mM) was able to reduce Fe3+ by 8.0-fold higher than that of BHT. Meanwhile, 4,4'-diaponeurosporene has been confirmed to be highly resistant to various external stresses (acid/bile, high temperature, and lysozyme conditions). In conclusion, L. plantarum subsp. plantarum KCCP11226, which produces 4,4'-diaponeurosporene as a functional antioxidant, may be a potentially useful strain for the development of functional probiotic industries.

This study assessed the antioxidant activity and residue level of phenolic antioxidants in autoxidation of linoleic acid. The antioxidant activity of phenolic antioxidants was measured based on peroxide value of linoleic acid at $50^{\circ}C$ for 8 days. We further evaluated the residue level of phenolic antioxidants in the autoxidation period by HPLC-UV. The residue level of antioxidants changed with time starting on day 0 (100%) and was determined by 100-remaining of antioxidants (%). Our results showed that peroxide values ranged from 0.33 to 10.18 meq/kg in propyl gallate, from 0.67 to 11.01 meq/kg in dodecyl gallate, from 0.01 to 10.34 meq/kg in octyl gallate, from 0.01 to 4.17 meq/kg in butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT), from 1.00 to 5.85 meq/kg in butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), from 0.33 to 4.18 meq/kg in 2,4,5-trihydroxybutyrophenone, and from 1.00 to 11.01 meq/kg in tert-butylhydroquinone (TBHQ). Among the residue levels of antioxidants, on day 8, BHT showed the highest level while TBHQ showed the lowest. BHT showed the highest correlation coefficient, whereas BHA showed the lowest. This study proves that the residual level of phenolic antioxidants has a good correlation with the degree of autoxidation in linoleic acid.

This study was carried out to investigate the antioxidant activity of bamboo (Sasa borealis) leaf extract by measuring electron donating ability, superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity, reducing power, and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity. Two crude extracts by water or 70% EtOH and five fractions of n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and aqueous from the crude extract of 70% EtOH were prepared for this study. The crude extracts of water and 70% EtOH yielded 8.5% and 11.4%, respectively and the yields of n-hexane, chloroform, ethyl acetate, n-butanol, and aqueous fractions were 5.1% to 0.6%. Total polyphenol contents of the water and the 70% EtOH crude extracts were not significantly different; however, their total flavonoid contents were significantly greater in the 70% EtOH than in the water crude extract. Total polyphenol contents were the highest in chloroform fraction followed by ethyl acetate and n-butanol fractions and total flavonoid contents were the highest in ethyl acetate fraction followed by chloroform and n-hexane fractions. The two crude extracts as well as the five fractions showed election donating ability, SOD-like ability, reducing power, and lipid peroxidation inhibitory activity. Most of the antioxidant activities of each crude extract or fractions increased proportionally with the concentration. These results indicate that bamboo (Sasa borealis) leaf extracts show antioxidant activities due to its substantial content of polyphenol including flavonoid. Thus, it could be concluded that crude extracts by water or 70% EtOH and the fractions from the 70% EtOH extract, especially chloroform, ethyl acetate and n-butanol, would be useful as natural antioxidant substances.
