  • Objectives : We aimed to explore the relationship among fatigue and perceived stress, depressive mood in the working population. We also examined associations with demographic and life style factors and investigated the effect of individual coping skills on these associations. Methods : Fatigue Severity Scale(FSS), Perceived Stress Scale(PSS), Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument - Korean version(BEPSI-K), Beck Depression Inventory(BDI), Stress Coping Skill Questionnaire were administered to 621 civil servants. All of above and other demographic factors are self-administered questionnaire survey and this study is cross sectional. Results : Mean FSS score was 3.04 which was lower than 3.22, the severity cut off score. FSS, PSS, BEPSI-K, BDI were all higher in female. Subjects with active coping skills showed relatively low fatigue, perceived stress, depressive mood than those with passive coping skills. Logistic regression analyses indicated that the PSS, BDI, BEPSI-K in working population increase the risk of fatigue and regular exercise lowers the risk. Conclusions : Adults who were afflicted by stress, experienced depressive mood or were physically inactive were at much higher risk of feeling fatigue. Since no other large data sets are available for fatigue, the results from this study could serve a very useful purpose, to furnish a basis for comparison with future research results based on more complete data.

  • Department of radiology implements the hospital-based clinical training to accept medical treatment techniques and to adapt experiences for students. However, it might cause negative effects to training education, leading to doubt about major and pressure about training as lots of students experience clinical treatment and complex stress in unfamiliar environment. Regarding this, pressure element that students can experience and diverse variables of training were compared and analyzed. With students in department of radiology for 6 colleges and universities, from September 15th to October 25th in 2011. The degree of stress for students in training was shown high in the fields of cost(3.06) and trainers(3.02). Value and ideal(2.94), role and experiment(2.93), training environment(2.74) and relationships among trainees(2.64) were followed in the order. Except expense regarding stress from clinical training, but in all factors, women showed higher pressure level than men(P<.05) and in stress range according to BEPSI-K, a meaningful difference was shown in fields of training environment, relationships among trainees and role and experiment(P<.01, P<.001, P<.05). Therefore, It has been confirmed that there is correlation between stress of students and satisfaction for clinical training with each other closely.

  • Color therapy is a diagnostic method for treating psychological problems using unique vibration and frequency color. The color has strong subjective psychology, it can give psychological stabilization effect as a spring as a favorite color and stability become personally personal. Also, to give various influences on emotion, we can obtain information via brain wave to evaluate these emotions. In this research, before viewing two kinds of VR color images of red and blue, responding to the stress questionnaire(BEPSI-K) via a mobile terminal. At this time, we analyzed the real-time we used four emotional data measurable via brain waves and grasped the user's emotional state. In addition, the stress questionnaire was used to quantify the emotion degree, and comparative analysis was made on how the color image affects the change of emotions with 3D virtual reality.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study was to investigate whether and how the symptoms of adult attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) affect the stress and depressive symptoms in Korean soldiers. Methods : Data were collected on 131 subjects through self-report using the Korean Adult Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Scale (K-AADHDS), Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale (CES-D), Korean Wender Utah Rating Scale (K-WURS), and the Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument (BEPSI-K). Student t-tests, Pearson Correlation, Logistic regression, and Path analysis were performed. Results : The scores related to adult ADHD symptoms on the K-AADHDS and K-WURS were correlated with stress scores on the BEPSI-K (r=0.529, p<0.001 and r=0.484, p<0.001) and with depressive symptoms on the CES-D (r=0.686, p<0.001 and r=0.628, p<0.001). Scores related to adult ADHD on the K-AADHDS were the most significant risk factors for stress (O.R=1.198, 95% CI=1.104-1.299), and depressive symptoms (O.R=1.306, p95% CI=1.112-1.534). Path analysis on depressive symptoms showed that adult ADHD symptoms affected stress and depressive symptoms. Conclusion : The results suggest that it may be important to consider the evaluation and treatment of adult ADHD in soldiers. Prospective studies with larger numbers of subjects are warranted to further explore the relevance of the present results.

  • This study was conducted to investigate psychological and physiological changes of elderly affected by agro-healing activities. To meet the purpose, we conducted an agro-healing program with 20 elderly participants (average age 77.6±5.84 men and women) and once a week in total seven sessions. The Korean version of the Brief Encounter Psychosocial Instrument (BEPSI-K), Korean version of the Short Form of Geriatric Depression Scale (SGDS-K), participants' satisfaction with the program, Salivettes system method, and blood pressure were measured to find out the effects of agro-healing activities. BEPSI-K decreased by 5% in the high stress group although it was not statistically significant. The result of program satisfaction showed that 75% of the participants are satisfied with these activities. We investigated how many and what kind of chronic diseases the participants have had before they joined the program. As a result, hypertension was most common(35.6%), followed by hyperlipidemia, diabetes, arthritis, lumbago, osteoporosis, and heart disease. Systolic blood pressure after the activities decreased significantly from 144.75mmHg (stage 1 hypertension), to 132.90mmHg(prehypertension stage). As a result of analyzing the correlations between general matters such as age, education level, average income of the participants, psychological scale and number of diseases, it was found that participants' satisfaction had a negative correlation with depression. In conclusion, agro-healing is very useful in relieving stress or lowering blood pressure for the elderly whose most common disease is hypertension. Agro-healing activities are proved to have positive uses in reducing the problems of the modern society with severe issues of the aging population.

  • This study was developed to provide the basis for efficient bedside training by discovering and analyzing ways to reduce stress when students are in clinical practice. The present study was conducted using a 3-part questionnaire format and was based on 253 participants who were students completing clinical practice. The results showed that environmental factors were the most stressful for students in the department of radiology. According to the questionnaire, the highest factor relating to stress was 'standing for long durations' with a value of $3.27{\pm}1.04$, and values were respectively high in the sections on' disregard when students have a lack of knowledge' and 'repetition in simple tasks'. Students who had a good training atmosphere, good relationships with clinical radiological technologists and other students, and students who had high self-esteem showed low stress levels. The effect on BEPSI scale increased as interpersonal relationships and performance declined. Therefore, training institutions should consider relaxation areas for students, radiological technologists should not ignore the reality that students do not have substantial knowledge in clinical practice and comparisons made between students should not exist. In addition, there is the need to make an effort to reduce stress experienced by students in clinical practice through the use of positive communication and encouragement by assigning various training opportunities, providing areas to sit and initiating relaxation periods for students to reduce fatigue, as well as challenging students rather than restricting them to the simple and repetitive routines they encounter in clinical practice.

  • In effort to determine whether aircraft noise can have health effects such as hearing loss, hypertension and psychological stress, a total of 111 male professors and administrative officers working a college near a military airport in Korea(exposed group) and a total of 168 males and 112 females matched by age groups(control groups) were analyzed. Personal noise exposure and indoor and outdoor sound level of jet aircraft noise were measured at the exposed are3. And pure tone, air conduction test and measurement of blood pressure were given to the exposed(males) and matched control groups (males and females). BEPSI(Brief Encounter Psychological Instrument) and psychological response to aircraft noise were examined for the exposed group. The noise dosimetry results revealed time-weighted averages(TWAs) that ranged from 61 to 68 dBA. However the levels encountered during taking off jet airplanes reached 126 dBA for two half minutes time period. Th, audiometric, test showed that mean values of HTL(hearing threshold level) in exposed group at every frequency(500, 1,000, 2,000, 4,000, and 8,000 Hz were much lower than them of male and female control groups. And in old age groups, interaction of age and noise was observed at 8,000 Hz in both ears(p<0.05). Conclusively, aircraft noise does not appear to induce hearing loss directly in high frequency, but may decreased hearing threshold level by interaction of aging process and noise exposure. However, difference of mean values of exposed and control groups on blood pressure was not significantly. In psychological test, annoyance was the most severe psychological response to noise in exposed group, but mean value of BEPSI was not correlated with job duration in exposed group.

  • The aim of this study was to assess the degree of association between individual stress and the amount of smoking among male senior students of a medical college. The questionnaire survey was conducted twice for collecting the data on stress level in terms of BEPSI score, smoking amounts, alcohol intake, and residence type in 1992 and 1993. Among the 223 responders, 39.9% were smokers. In the smokers, the association between stress level and smoking amount was significant after controlling for alcohol intake and residence type (p<0.1). Especially in the group of living without family, the association was more significant (p=0.06). Therefore, it is recommendable that the stress management program is called upon for the student smokers to reduce smoking amount.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate stress, depression and health risk behaviors in elderly people. Methods: The subjects were 238 Korean elders who had visited the convalescent center. The level of stress was measured by the Korean version of BEPSI, which was developed by Bae, Jeung & Yoo (1992) and modified by Yim et al.(1996). CES-D was used to measure the level of depression. For health risk behaviors, we measured cigarette consumption and alcohol drinking during the last one month. Results: Of the subjects, 17.4% were excessive drinkers and 18.9% were currently smokers. The level of stress was between moderate and high, and 62.7% of the subjects were depressed. There were significant differences in stress and depression according to economic status and self-reported health. In addition, depression had positive correlations with stress and QF score. Conclusion: Stress and depression management programs for the elderly are needed. These findings indicate that nurses must consider stress and alcohol drinking when they take care of depressed elderly people.
