  • The effects of vitamin C and vitamin E with selenium on acid-base balance and some stress hormones were evaluated during heat stress in goats. Goats, 1.5 years of age, were divided into control, heat stress and antioxidant treatment groups 1, 2 and 3. Except for the control, all groups were exposed to a temperature of $40{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ with a relative humidity of 30% for 5 h/d for 21 days in a psychrometric chamber. Rectal temperature and respiratory rates were recorded daily post exposure. Blood samples were collected on every 3rd day for estimation of plasma vitamins C and E, total antioxidant activity and hormones, and separate blood samples were taken to estimate acid-base status. The rectal temperature and respiratory rates were increased (p<0.05) in the heat stress group only. Except for pH and $pO_2$, which were increased significantly (p<0.05) other parameters of acid-base balance such as $pCO_2$, $HCO_3^-$, $TCO_2$, BEb, BEcef, PCV and Hb were significantly decreased (p<0.05) in the heat stress group. An improvement in acid-base status was noted in the antioxidant supplemented groups. Prolactin and cortisol levels were significantly (p<0.05) higher and free T3 and T4 levels were significantly (p<0.05) lower in the heat stress group. Levels of prolactin and cortisol were decreased and free T3 and T4 were increased in antioxidant treatment groups. Different levels of antioxidant supplementation resulted in similar protection against heat stress.

  • An inseparable challenge associated with every random access network is the design of an efficient Collision Resolution Algorithm (CRA), since collisions cannot be completely avoided in such network. To maximize the collision resolution efficiency of a popular CRA, namely Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB), we propose a reactive backoff algorithm. The proposed backoff algorithm is reactive in the sense that it updates the contention window based on the previously selected backoff value in the failed contention stage to avoid a typical type of collision, referred as cross-collision. Cross-collision would occur if the contention slot pointed by the currently selected backoff value appeared to be present in the overlapped portion of the adjacent (the previous and the current) windows. The proposed reactive algorithm contributes to significant performance improvements in the network since it offers a supplementary feature of Cross Collision Exclusion (XCE) and also retains the legacy collision mitigation features. We formulate a Markovian model to emulate the characteristics of the proposed algorithm. Based on the solution of the model, we then estimate the throughput and delay performances of WLAN following the signaling mechanisms of the Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) considering IEEE 802.11b system parameters. We validate the accuracy of the analytical performance estimation framework by comparing the analytically obtained results with the results that we obtain from the simulation experiments performed in ns-2. Through the rigorous analysis, based on the validated model, we show that the proposed reactive cross collision exclusionary backoff algorithm significantly enhances the throughput and reduces the average packet delay in the network.

  • An improved backoff algorithm for retransmission randomization for OFDMA/CDMA/slotted ALOHA used in the ranging subchannel of IEEE 802.16 network is proposed. Exploiting the fact that a base station coordinates channel access using UL-/DL-MAP in the IEEE 802.16 networks, we propose a minor modification of the existing IEEE 802.16 in order to increase throughput, decrease delay variation and achieve a graceful performance degradation in case of overload channel condition of the random access protocol. The algorithm basically estimates the number of backlogged users and arrival rate using which, the BS calculates retransmission probability for the subscriber stations involved in a collision. Computer simulation is performed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and to compare the performance with existing binary exponential backoff algorithm.

  • The standards which use shared medium like IEEE 802.11 wireless LAN have transmission opportunity by contention in contention period. If there are collisions in contention period, medium access control protocol may solve problem by using backoff algorithm. Backoff algorithm is important part in medium access control, but legacy backoff method which is used under IEEE 802.11 standards is not adjusted when load is heavy because of increasing collisions. In this paper, we propose a new load-based dynamic backoff algorithm in contention-based wireless shared medium to improve throughput of medium and to reduce the number of collisions. Proposed backoff algorithm can increase the network utilization about $20\%$ higher than that of binary exponential backoff algorithm.

  • Like other wireless network protocols, IEEE 802.15.4 adopts CA (Collision Avoidance)algorithm to avoid the early collision of a new packet by randomizing its first transmission time rather than its immediate delivery. The traditional CA scheme of IEEE 802.15.4, however, selects the random access time from the predetermined range without considering the degree of current congestion. It probably causes either a long delay to settle in the suitable range for the current network load or frequent clashes especially during the long lasting heavy traffic period. This paper proposes an ACA(Adaptive Collision Avoidance) algorithm adapting the initial backoff range to the undergoing collision variations. It also introduces a mathematical model to predict the performance of ACA algorithm added to IEEE 802.15.4. With only small deviations from corresponding simulations, our analytical model shows that ACA technique can improve the throughput of IEEE 802.15.4 by up-to 41% maximally in addition to shortening the packet delays.

  • The Internet of Things (IoT), which has recently attracted attention as next-generation IT industry, is based on a wired and wireless network platform that can connect various Things. However, it is challenging to implement the IoT platform because of the heterogeneity of the network. Particularly, the ZigBee transmission may be significantly harmed due to Wi-Fi with the relatively much higher power, and this is one of the reason making the platform implementation difficult. In this paper, the ZigBee transmission is measured and analyzed by the BEB algorithm for finding the slot time when ZigBee can transmit, and an actual transmission happens stochastically depending on the network environment. The simulation results show that it guarantees high success rate of the ZigBee transmission by overcoming Wi-Fi interference in the 2.4 GHz frequency band.

  • In network-centric warfare, the communication network has played a significant role in defeating an enemy. Especially, the urgent and important data should be preferentially delivered in time. Thus, we proposed a priority MAC protocol based on CSMA/CA with Binary Exponential Back-off for tactical wireless networks. This MAC protocol suggested a PCW(Prioritized Contention Window) with differentiated back-off time by priority and a RBR(Repetitive Back-off Reset) to reset the remaining back-off time. The results showed that this proposed MAC has higher performance than those of DCF(Distributed Coordination Function) in the transmission success rate and the number of control packet transmission by reducing the packet collision. Thus, it produced more effective power consumption. In comparison with DCF, this proposed protocol is more suitable in high-traffic network.

  • Many portable devices are coming to be commercially successful and provide useful services to mobile users. Mobile devices may request a variety of data types, including text and multimedia data, thanks to the rich content of the Internet. Different types of data and/or different classes of users may need to be treated with different qualities of service. The implementation of service differentiation in wireless networks is very difficult because of device mobility and wireless channel contention when the backoff algorithm is used to resolve contention. Modification of the t)mary exponential backoff algorithm is one possibility to allow the design of several classes of data traffic flows. We present a study of modifications to the backoff algorithm to support three classes of flows: sold, silver, and bronze. For example, the gold c]ass flows are the highest priority and should satisfy their required target bandwidth, whereas the silver class flows should receive reasonably high bandwidth compared to the bronze class flows. The mixture of the two different transport protocols, UDP and TCP, in ad hoc networks raises significant challenges when defining backoff algorithm modifications. Due to the different characteristics of UDP and TCP, different backoff algorithm modifications are applied to each class of packets from the two transport protocols. Nevertheless, we show by means of simulation that our approach of backoff algorithm modification clearly differentiates service between different flows of classes regardless of the type of transport protocol.

  • Non-human primates (NHPs) are confirmed as reservoirs of Cryptosporidium spp., Giardia intestinalis, and Enterocytozoon bieneusi. In this study, 197 fresh fecal samples from 8 NHP species in Qinling Mountains, northwestern China, were collected and examined using multilocus sequence typing (MLST) method. The results showed that 35 (17.8%) samples were positive for tested parasites, including Cryptosporidium spp. (3.0%), G. intestinalis (2.0%), and E. bieneusi (12.7%). Cryptosporidium spp. were detected in 6 fecal samples of Macaca mulatta, and were identified as C. parvum (n=1) and C. andersoni (n=5). Subtyping analysis showed Cryptosporidium spp. belonged to the C. andersoni MLST subtype (A4, A4, A4, and A1) and C. parvum 60 kDa glycoprotein (gp60) subtype IId A15G2R1. G. intestinalis assemblage E was detected in 3 M. mulatta and 1 Saimiri sciureus. Intra-variations were observed at the triose phosphate isomerase (tpi), beta giardin (bg), and glutamate dehydrogenase (gdh) loci, with 3, 1, and 2 new subtypes found in respective locus. E. bieneusi was found in Cercopithecus neglectus (25.0%), Papio hamadrayas (16.7%), M. mulatta (16.3%), S. sciureus (10%), and Rhinopithecus roxellana (9.5%), with 5 ribosomal internal transcribed spacer (ITS) genotypes: 2 known genotypes (D and BEB6) and 3 novel genotypes (MH, XH, and BSH). These findings indicated the presence of zoonotic potential of Cryptosporidium spp. and E. bieneusi in NHPs in Qinling Mountains. This is the first report of C. andersoni in NHPs. The present study provided basic information for control of cryptosporidiosis, giardiasis, and microsporidiosis in human and animals in this area.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate correlation between the morphology by microscopic assessments of surplus blastocysts produced in human IVF program and their cell number obtained by differential labelling method. For these experiments, 76 surplus human blastocysts were obtained from 36 patients on day 5 after IVF, the embryos were classified to early (ErB), early expanding (EEB), middle expanding (MEB), expanded blastocyst (EdB) according to their blastocoel expansion and zona thickness. When the ovum size and zona thickness of the classified blastocysts were measured using micrometer, although the embryos were produced in the same culture condition, there were significant variances in ovum size ($148.8 217.6{\mu}m$) and zona thickness ($1.2-14.4{\mu}m$). Total blastomere cell number counted after hoechst staining was increased by two to three fold during the transition period from ErB ($39.1{\pm}3.6$) to EdB ($(89.6{\pm}3.3)$) stage on day 5 after IVF. ICM ($11.9{\pm}1.8-22.2{\pm}4.3$) and TE ($24.5{\pm}3.6-70.0{\pm}7.7$) cell numbers using differential labelling were also showed the increased pattern according to the developmental level. Especially, EdB which showed poor ICM morphologically also indicated the low ICM cell number after differential labelling. This demonstrated that there is good correlation between the morphological assessment and the cell number. The count of ICM and TE nuclei using differential labelling can be used as an important criterion, if it is accompanied with morphological assessments, in selecting the better embryos for improving the pregnancy rates in human blastocyst transfer program.
