This paper proposes an X-MAC/BEB protocol that runs a binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm on top of an X-MAC protocol to save more energy by reducing collision, especially in densely populated wireless sensor networks (WSNs). X-MAC, a lightweight asynchronous duty cycle medium access control (MAC) protocol, was introduced for spending less energy than its predecessor, B-MAC. One of X-MAC 's conspicuous technique is a mechanism to allow senders to promptly send their data when their receivers wake up. X-MAC, however, has no mechanism to deal with sudden traffic fluctuations that often occur whenever closely located nodes simultaneously diffuse their sense data. To precisely evaluate the impact of the BEB algorithm on X-MAC, this paper builds an analytical model of X-MAC/BEB that integrates the BEB model with the X-MAC model. The analytical and simulation results confirmed that X-MAC/BEB outperformed X-MAC in terms of throughput, delay, and energy consumption, especially in congested WSNs.

Binary Exponential Back-off (BEB) scheme is widely adopted in both wire and wireless networks for collision resolution. The BEB suffers from several performance drawbacks including long packet delay and low utilization since it doubles the back-off size after each collision. In addition, operation of the BEB algorithm may lead to the last-come-first-serve result among competing users and the BEB is further unstable for every arrival rate greater than 0 due to its random access property[1,2]. In this paper, we propose a deterministic back-off algorithm to reduce contention interval as much as possible for accessing the channel without collision in the back-off process. Simulation results show that our scheme offers a higher throughput as well as a lower packet transfer delay than the BEB by taking advantage of its lower collision ratio in saturation state.

In the IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), network nodes experiencing collisions on the shared channel need to backoff for a random period of time. which is uniformly selected from the Contention Window (CW) This contention window is dynamically controlled by the Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) algorithm. The BEB scheme suffers from a unfairness problem and low throughput under high traffic load. IEEE 802.11 MAC(Media Access Control) defines DCF(Distributed Coordination Function) for data transmission control. BEB(Binary Exponential Backoff) algorithm of DCF has a problem that if the number of stations connected are over a certain threshold, it degrades network performance because of packet collisions caused from the minimum contention window size. To cope with this problem, we proposed a novel algorithm, named as VBS(Variable Backoff Stage) algorithm, which adjusts the rate of backoff stage increment depending on the number of stations associated with an AP(Access Point). Analytic model of proposed algorithm was derived and simulations on the BEB and the VBS algorithms have been conducted on the OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) method. Simulation results showed that when the rate of backoff state increment was 5 and 10, the number of retransmission were reduced to 1/5 and 1/10 comparing to that of BEB, respectively. Our algorithm showed improvement of 19% and 18% in network utilization, respectively. Packet delay was reduced into 1/12.

This study was performed to offer convenience to determine the vertical dimension of occlusion of edentulous patients by investigating the interocclusal distances at physiologic rest position, at speaking of /m/ sound, and some korean short sounds, that is, /mem/ and /beb/ sounds, which were found in our previous study with dentulous subjects. Ten edentulous subjects - 6 men and 4 women - were selected for this study. The frequencies at speaking of /m/, /mem/, and /beb/ sounds were analyzed with Computerized speech lab($CSL^{TM}$, Model 4300B, Software version 5.X, Kay Elemetrics Co. U.S.A.). And the interocclusal distances at physiologic rest position and at speaking of /m/, /mem/, and /beb/ sounds were measured with K6 diagnostic system(Myo-tronics, Inc. U.S.A.). The results of this study were as follows ; 1. In the acoustic analysis by Computerized speech lab, frequencies of sounds of edentulous subjects with complete denture at speaking of /m/, /mem/, and /beb/ were similar to those of dentulous subjects. 2. In the linear correlation by Pearson's correlation coefficient, the interocclusal distance at physiologic rest position was most similar to those of speaking /mem/ sound, secondly /m/ sound, and thirdly /beb/ sound(p<0.05). In reliability by Cronbach's alpha, the results were reliable with alpha value 0.97. 3. It was found by Levene's test for equality of variance that the difference between men and women in the interocclusal distances at physiologic rest position and at speaking of /m/, /mem/, and /beb/ sounds was not statistically significant(p>0.05).

In the IEEE 802.11 Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), network nodes experiencing collisions on the shared channel need to backoff for a random period of time, which is uniformly selected from the Contention Window (CW). This contention window is dynamically controlled by the Binary Exponential Backoff (BEB) algorithm. The BEB scheme suffers from a fairness problem and low throughput under high traffic load. In this paper, I propose a new backoff algorithm for use with the IEEE 802.11 Distributed Coordination Function.
The MAC of IEEE 802.11 WLAN to control data transmission uses two control methods called DCF and PCF. The DCF uses BEB backoff algorithm based on CSMA/CA. The BEB backoff algorithm shows excellent performance relatively in situation that competition between stations is less, but its performance is decreases as the competition increases. This paper proposes and analyses mathematically an enhanced backoff algorithm. To reduce the collision probability, the proposed algorithm increases the contention window to maximum after collision and decreases the contention window smoothly after successful transmission. To prove efficiency of proposed algorithm, simulations are conducted and analyzed.

Benign essential blepharospasm (BEB) is a condition/disease which involves involuntary muscle contractions causing the eye to repetitively close, making it impossible for the patient to perform daily activities. This study reports Korean medicine treatment of a rare case BEB in a 34-year-old male patient whose symptoms showed minimal improvement following botulinum toxin injection (the standard treatment). Acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, and herbal medicine treatment for 11 days resulted in clinical improvement for all symptoms as assessed by using the Jankovic Rating Scale, Blepharospasm Disability Index, numerical rating scale, duration of spasms lasting more than 1 hour per day, and number of spasms lasting less than 1 minute per day. This case report suggests that comprehensive Korean medicine treatment could be a treatment option for BEB in patients who do not respond well to botulinum toxin injection.

IEEE 802.11 has employed distributed coordination function (DCF) adopting carrier sense multiple access with collision avoidance (CSMA/CA). To effectively resolve collisions, DCF uses binary exponential backoff (BEB) algorithm with three parameters, i.e., backoff stage, backoff counter and contention window. If a collision occurs, stations involving in the collision increase their backoff stages by one and double their contention window sizes. However, DCF with BEB wastes wireless resource when there are many contending stations. Therefore, in this paper, to enhance the performance of wireless LAN, we propose binary negative-exponential backoff (BNEB) algorithm which maintains a maximum contention window size during collisions and reduces a contention window size to half after successful transmission of a frame without retransmissions. For IEEE 802.11, 802.11a and 802.11b standards, we also compare the performance of DCF with BEB to that with BNEB.

In this paper, I propose an modified back-off algorithm to improve the fairness for slotted ALOHA sensor networks. In hierarchical networks, the performance degradation of a specific node can cause degradation of the overall network performance in case the data transmitted by lower nodes is needed to be synthesized and processed by an upper node. Therefore it is important to ensure the fairness of transmission performance to all nodes. The proposed scheme choose a back-off time of a node considering the previous transmission results as well as the current transmission result. Moreover a node that failed to transmit consecutively is given gradually shorter back-off time but a node that is success to transmit consecutively is given gradually longer back-off time. Through simulations, I compare and analyze the performance of the proposed scheme with the binary exponential back-off algorithm(BEB). The results show that the proposed scheme reduces the throughput slightly compared to BEB but improves the fairness significantly.
