Based on the consideration of land based pollutant discharges from the basin and seawater quality related carrying capacity and the seawater quality improvement in receiving water bodies of Yeoja Bay where eutrophication and organic pollution are in progress, were evaluated. The permissible inflow loads of BOD, TN and TP by using the geographical features and box modelling method were estimated. As results, it is shown that the reduction rate of discharged BOD and TP loads were 39.3% and 30.8 %, respectively, however, 6.9% was estimated for TN. According to the pollutant loading in each tributary and generated load of the basin, it is given much weight on the land use group, and also was shown in discharged load estimation. This suggests that it is important to control nonpoint source pollutant such as livestock and land use groups as well as point source to contribute the proposition of the water quality improvement plan according to the characteristics of the bay.

With the increasing attention of the international community on climate change and biodiversity promotion programmes, the Korean government and public agencies are trying to protect and restore the ecosystem of areas protected by law, such as waterfronts, by acquiring private land. However, the inadequate purchase system has caused various problems. In this study, an efficient and systematic land purchase system was developed through ecological evaluation, focusing on the ecological and landscape conservation areas of the Donggang basin. The ecological evaluation was developed by integrating parcel-level evaluation and regional-specific evaluation, and the overall level of ecological function was established and finalized through on-site verification. As a result of verifying the purchase land of 88 parcels, it showed a relatively high agreement of more than 85.2%, and the rest of parcels (non-agreement) were considered to have had an impact on vegetation, crop harvesting, etc. due to seasonal differences in ecological evaluation and field verification. The purchasing system was ranked according to the ecological evaluation grade based on the endangered species and the distance from the core ecosystem. As a result, the purchase priority was systematically drawn up to the 5th rank for a total of 68 parcels for the private lands of Geoeun-ri, Munsan-ri, Deokcheon-ri, Unchi-ri, Gumam-ri, and Suji-ri. This study is expected to contribute to the preservation, restoration and ecological management of purchased land in the protected area in the future by establishing and proposing a systematic land purchase system based on ecological evaluation.

The increased frequency of drought and flood due to climate change was a global problem. In particular, drought was recognized as a serious environmental, ecological, social, and economic disaster. Therefore, it is necessary to study the measures to prevent it. In this study, we will estimate the meteorological drought index in the Han River Basin and analyze the impact of climate change on drought. The change of the meteorological drought occurrence due to climate change in the Han River separated by the common drought and severe drought was analyzed using the Representative Concentration Pathways (RCPs) scenarios provided by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). The years 1973 - 2010 were selected for analysis in the current period. Using the scenario, we separated the future period (Target I: 2011 - 2039, Target II: 2040 - 2069, Target III : 2070 - 2099). The number of occurrences of less than -1.0 and -1.5 standard precipitation index were analyzed by SPI 3, 6, 12. Looking at the results, trends in rainfall in the Han River was expected to increase from the current figures, the occurrence of drought is predicted to decline in the future. However, the number of drought occurrence was analyzed to increase toward long-term drought. The number of severe drought occurrences was usually larger than the common drought estimated. Additional studies may be considered in addition to the agricultural drought, hydrological drought, socio-economic drought. This will be done by using efficient water management. The results can be used as a basis for future drought analysis of the Han River.

This study is to evaluate the applicability of SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model for multi-purpose dams and multi-function weirs operation in Namhan river basin ($12,577km^2$) of South Korea. The SWAT was calibrated (2005 ~ 2009) and validated (2010 ~ 2014) considering of 4 multi-purpose dams and 3 multi-function weirs using daily observed dam inflow and storage, evapotranspiration, soil moisture, and groundwater level data. Firstly, the dam inflow was calibrated by the five steps; (step 1) the physical rate between total runoff and evapotranspiration was controlled by ESCO, (step 2) the peak runoff was calibrated by CN, OV_N, and CH_N, (step 3) the baseflow was calibrated by GW_DELAY, (step 4) the recession curve of baseflow was calibrated by ALPHA_BF, (step 5) the flux between lateral flow and return flow was controlled by SOL_AWC and SOL_K, and (step 6) the flux between reevaporation and return flow was controlled by REVAPMN and GW_REVAP. Secondly, for the storage water level calibration, the SWAT emergency and principle spillway were applied for water level from design flood level to restricted water level for dam and from maximum to management water level for weir respectively. Finally, the parameters for evapotranspiration (ESCO), soil water (SOL_AWC) and groundwater level fluctuation (GWQMN, ALPHA_BF) were repeatedly adjusted by trial error method. For the dam inflow, the determination coefficient $R^2$ was above 0.80. The average Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency (NSE) was from 0.59 to 0.88 and the RMSE was from 3.3 mm/day to 8.6 mm/day respectively. For the water balance performance, the PBIAS was between 9.4 and 21.4 %. For the dam storage volume, the $R^2$ was above 0.63 and the PBIAS was between 6.3 and 13.5 % respectively. The average $R^2$ for evapotranspiration and soil moisture at CM (Cheongmicheon) site was 0.72 and 0.78, and the average $R^2$ for groundwater level was 0.59 and 0.60 at 2 YP (Yangpyeong) sites.
The Wangdol-cho area, in the Hupo Bank, plays a very important role in main fishing grounds, leisure tourism and marine environmental researches of the East Sea. We analyzed the detailed bathymetry and classified the seabed characteristics of the Wangdol-cho area, based on seafloor backscattering images and sediment grain size. The Hupo Bank is developed in parallel with the eastern coastal line of Korean peninsula, and the shallowest area (Wangdol-cho) of the Hupo Bank is located along the eastern part of Hupo Port. The Wangdol-cho comprises three summits; north summit, middle summit, and south summit. The middle summit area among the three summits has the most shallow water depth with minimum about 6 m. The north summit shows about 8 m minimum depth and the south summit about 9 m. The bathymetry data around three summits represent undulating seabeds with many scattered underwater reefs and shallow water depth. The area between the underwater reefs, the flat seafloor in the northeastern part of the survey site, and the western steep slope area have relatively coarse sediments such as sandy gravel and gravelly sand. The bathymetry in the western side of the Wangdol-cho shows steep slope seabed, extending to the Hupo Basin. Fine sediments including mud and silty sand occur in the Hupo Basin area of the survey site. The submarine detailed topography and the analysis of the seafloor characteristics of the survey area are expected to contribute to management for marine environmental researches and sustainable use of ecosystems in the Wangdol-cho.

Fiber Dyeing and Finishing facility has been recognized as an important pollution source due to its consumption of large volumes of water and chemicals. Unit mass discharge for the conventional water quality parameters such as flowrate, SS, $BOD_5,\;COD_{Mn},\;COD_{Cr}$, TN, TP were estimated. To represent the respective industries, three companies were carefully selected based on its manufacturing goods, flowrate and location at various unit operations and processes. More than 90% of decrease in unit mass estimation between influent and effluent of BOD was observed. But the values themselves were similar to those of Fiber Manufacturing facility due to the high loadings of organic matter. Biodegradability of influent was almost three times higher than that of effluent. Unit mass discharge estimations of unit process (estimated in this study) based on space, products and raw material were similar to those of composite process (estimated by National Institute of Environmental Research), while big difference was observed in the other factors. Unit mass discharge factors calculated in this study can be used as the reference for the estimation of water pollution loading costs in Nakdong river basin. For the effective water pollution control and management, it is essential to characterize the various types of water quality parameters from the effluents of individual industrial wastewater treatment plants.

Soil and water quality was monitored in the Nakdong River basin to assess the impact of different agricultural practices. From five catchments, soil samples were collected at three times during 1996 to 1998, and water samples were collected at twelve times on July during 1995 to 1999. The major agricultural practices were paddy and upland farming in three areas surveyed: Youngju, Goryung, and Milyang. Apple orchards were located along in the Imgo-Cheon catchment. Intensive vegetable farming in plastic fIlm house was practiced in the Habin-Cheon catchment. Total N contents, 0.04-0.32%, of paddy soils were low in comparison with those of upland, orchard, and plastic film house soils. Available phosphate($P_2O_5$) contents, $2-421mg\;kg^{-1}$, in plastic film house soils were higher than those in paddy soils. In plastic film house and upland soils, CEC of soils were high. The N concentrations in most of the streams were higher than $1.0mg^{-1}$, the standard of agricultural irrigation water. The P concentrations were above $1.0mg^{-1}$, the standard of agricultural irrigation water and were higher than the minimum level for eutrophication, $0.01-0.05mg\;L^{-1}$ in most of the streams. In conclusion, nutrients by agricultural activity could affect water quality of streams near the agricultural fields. Good water quality in streams can be maintained by proper management of agricultural fields and by decreasing application amount of fertilizers in agricultural fields.
The Uncertainty of drought events can be regarded as supernatural phenomena so that the uncertainty of water supply system will be also uncontrollable. Decision making for water supply system operation must be dealt with in consideration of hydrologic uncertainty conditions. When ultimate small quantity of precipitation or streamflow lasts, water supply system might be impacted as well as stream pollution, aqua- ecosystem degradation, reservoir dry-up and river aesthetic waste etc. In case of being incapable of supplying water owing to continuation of severe drought, it can make the damage very serious beyond our prediction. This study analyzes comprehensively sustained drought impacts on the Han River Basin Water Supply System. Drought scenarios consisted of several sustained times and return periods for 5 sub-watersheds are generated using a stochastic hydrologic time series model. The developed drought scenarios are applied to assess water supply performance at the Paldang Dam. The results show that multi-year drought events reflecting spatial hydrologic diversity need to be examined in order to recognize variation of the unexpected drought impacts.

In meteorology Korea has 2/3 of rain of annual total rainfall at the month of Jun through Sept and it has possibility to have serious flood damage because geographically it is composed of mountainous area with steep slope which account for 70% of its country. Also, the increase of impervious layer due to industrialization and urbanization causes direct runoff, which deteriorates contamination of rivers by moving the contaminated material on the surface at the beginning of rain. In particular, the area of leisure facilities needs the management of water quality absolutely because dense population requires space of park function and place to relax and increases moving capability of non-point pollution source. For disposition of rainfall & runoff, the standard of initial rainfall, which is to be used for the computation of disposition volume, is significant factors for the runoff study of non-point pollution source, Until now, a great deal of study has been done by many researchers. However, it is the current reality that the characteristics of runoff varies according to land protection comprising river basin and the standard of initial rainfall by each researcher is not clearly defined yet. Therefore, in this research, it is suggested that, with the introduction of SOM (Self-Organizing Map), the standard of initial rainfall be determined after analyzing each sectional data by executing pattern classification about runoff and water quality data measured at the test river basin for this research.

We examined the effects of pollutants into sub-basin on the water quality and loading based on data surveyed during January-December 2013 from 13 sites of 5 streams in the Jinwi watershed. We used the contour plot and Kruskal-Wallis rank sum test to analyze seasonal variation of water quality and loading and Pearson correlation analysis to assess the relationships between pollutants and loadings. The significantly higher seasonal variation were SS, TN and TOC as compared to other water quality constituents (P < 0.001). A significant interaction existed between the effects of human population and the effects of discharge of Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) on water quality and loading, especially for the spring and winter seasons. It is necessary to control discharge water of sewage and wastewater from industrial facilities and to make full use of the watershed management system such as TMDLs in operation since 2012 for improvement in stream water quality.
