Diffuse pollution management in Korea initiated by the Ministry of Environment (MOE) resulted to the construction of pilot facilities termed Best Management Practices (BMPs). Twelve BMPs installed for the diffuse pollution management in the Kyung-An Stream were monitored since 2006. Data on the mass loading, removal efficiency, maintenance activities, etc. were gathered and utilized to conduct the evaluation of long-term performance of BMPs. The financial data such as actual construction, design and maintenance cost were also collected to evaluate the lifecycle cost (LCC) of BMPs. In this study, most of the maintenance activity was focused in the aesthetic maintenance that resulted to the annual maintenance cost of the four BMP types was closely similar ranging from 8,483 $/yr for retention pond to 8,888 $/yr infiltration system. The highest LCC were observed in constructed wetland ($418,324) while vegetated system had the lowest LCC ($210,418). LCC of BMPs was not so high as compared with the conventional treatment facility and sewage treatment plant. On the other hand, the relationship of removal efficiency on unit cost for TSS and TN was significant. This study will be used to design the cost effective BMP for diffuse pollution management and become models for LCC analysis.

In this study, the applicability of dynamic water quality model to TMDL system was examined, methods for setting of water quality goal and estimation of allocation loads were suggested and results of applying these methods were analyzed. HSPF model was applied for Miho stream basin as a dynamic water quality model. The model was calibrated using measurement data obtained in 2009~2010 and showed satisfactory performance in predicting daily variations of flow rate and BOD concentration. Methods for TMDL application were categorized into 3 cases; water quality management (1) considering low flow condition(Case I), (2) considering entire period of the year (Case II) and (3) considering the worst water quality condition (Case III). BOD water quality goals at the end of Miho stream watershed increased in the order of Case IICase I>Case III. If further researches on base precipitation and method for model input of nonpoint source pollutant were carried out, water quality could be managed more reasonably and scientifically by applying dynamic water quality model to TMDL. The result of this study is expected to be used as primary data for TMDL using dynamic water quality model.
Water Management Resilience Index (WMRI) was developed as a policy measure of adaptability to withstand water stresses and to set up water management strategies mainly in mid-small scale tributaries, and then evaluated on 117 sub-basins in South Korea. The index consists of 3 sub-indices such as vulnerability, robustness and redundancy sub-indices, each including indicators of 3 sectors: water use, flood mitigation, and river environment. Total number of indicators selected for the index was 31. Taking into account the stream order and control capability of river flow discharge, sub-basins were categorized into 3: 1 for mainstreams of lower large dams, 2 and 3 for tributaries, respectively without and with flow discharge regulation. As a result of the evaluation, resilience index scores in Category 2 and 3 are much lower than that of Category 1, especially with very poor score of redundancy. Although there was no significant difference between mainstream and tributaries in vulnerability and robustness sub-indices, results of redundancy sub-index in tributaries were lower than those in mainstream. Thus, it is conceived that the variety of water management schemes should be considered to improve their resilience in the face of future uncertainty. Addressing comprehensive stability of river basin against internal and external impacts, WMRI in this study can also be used for the prioritization of water management plans.

The study was aimed at analyzing the relationship between the characteristics of urban green infrastructure and stormwater runoff in a small urban watershed composed of 22 drainage basins. The green areas of which soils are not sealed and allow water infiltrate, were examined for different types of green spaces. In a comparative study for drainage basins of which green spaces are 15.5% and 34.4%, respectively, runoffs were not different with the size of green space. It was attributed to that the increase of runoff by greater road area offset the advantage of greater green area. Another comparative measurement of runoff for drainage basins with similar green area size showed that runoff decreased with greater permeable area (school ground area) and smaller road area. The runoff measurements could address that runoff rates are affected not only by green area size but also by the type of green area and other land covers related to permeability and flow into drainage. It implicated that the improvement of urban green infrastructure as a functional unit for water infiltration and interception is important for stormwater runoff management.

Traditional methods for the extraction of the environmental factors of waters in which environmental change is severer than in the land can not examine closely the changed phenomena because of the lack of equipments, manpower, time and cost, etc. Therefore, new practical and efficient methods are required. The research for the method to manage environment of the waters with remote sensing technology was needed. This study examined the interrelations between the data by an on-the-spot survey and Landsat TM data and presented the model for extracting factors of water quality with regression analysis and experimental formula.
Jeju Island is the highest rain-prone area in Korea that possesses affluent water resources, but future climate changes are predicted to further increase vulnerabilities as resultant of increasing of extreme events and creating spatial-temporal imbalance in water resources. Therefore, this study aimed to provide basic information to establish a proper water resources management plan by evaluating the effects of climate change on water resources using climate change scenario. Direct runoff ratio for 15 years (2000~2014) was analyzed to be 11~32% (average of 23%), and average direct runoff ratio for the next 86 years (2015~2100) was found as 28%, showing an increase of about 22% compared to the present average direct runoff ratio (23%). To assess the effects of climate change on long-term runoff, monthly runoff variation of future Gangjeong watershed was analyzed by dividing three time periods as follows: Present (2000~2030), Future 1 (2031~2070) and Future 2 (2071~2100). The estimated results showed that average monthly runoff increases in the future and the highest runoff is shown by Future 2. Extreme values has been expected to occur more frequently in the future as compared to the present.
Water pollution in enclosed water bodies such as lake and river has become a serious problem over the world. Domestic wastewater is responsible for more than 60 % pollution load in public water area in Korea. Effluent of the treated domestic wastewater at low removal level is abundantly fed rivers and lakes and thus be an serious cause of lake pollution. Therefore, effective implement of domestic wastewater treatment in basin of lake and river must be prepared. The septic tank is one of the effective domestic wastewater treatment equipment and used in individual treatment for a unit of household, The purpose of septic tank as biological treatment system is simultaneously to remove BOD, T-N, T-P and reduce turbidity from influent. Accordingly, the appropriate control of functional microorganisms is important subject for the establishment of stability and economy of the biological treatment method. Especially, microanimals as a high-ranked microorganisms of food-chain are important, because microanimals control the other microorganisms especially various bacteria and effect on function of treatment. Therefore, it is necessary that functional predator like rotifers are attached in wastewater treatment process. In this study, the methods for attachment high density the rotifer to and improvement of transparency in the effluence by a dense rotifer was examined using laboratory scale biological treatment reactor simulated septic tank and real one.

In this study, the accurate water quality analysis in rivers, including the non-point source is performed. First of all, watershed model, SWAT(Soil and Water Assessment Tool) was applied to analyze the impact of the non-point source in study area. And then, water quality analysis integrating the point source and the non-point source is implemented using QUALKO model. For more exact simulation, it should be the calibration and verification of variables and parameters which are needed for simulation. In addition, the importance of considering the non-point source was confirmed in river water quality simulation. BOD, TN, TP were analysed, and the results shows that BOD, TN and TP concentration was increased to 16.8%, 8.2% and 25.8% respectively. The more accurate estimate will be carried if use of reliable measurements and watershed simulation be done in models linking process. The suggested technique will improve the accuracy of the water quality analysis. The methodologies presented in this study will contribute to basin-wide water quantity and quality management.
The objective of this study is to estimate the load of pollutants caused from the forest area among non-point pollutants within the Juam lake. The surveyed forest area was classified into broad-leaved, conifer, mixed and herbage area by forest tree type. Water quality and flux were investigated under rainfall and non-rainfall, respectively. Then, pollutant loading was evaluated by using the values of unit pollutant loading factor of each point and area of forest zone. Water quality analysis results of runoff by forest tree types were as follows. - Annual BOD, $COD_{Mn}\;and\;COD_{Cr}$ concentration of runoff in conifer area was high, and particle and biological recalcitrant compounds were flowed highly. - SS, T-N and T-P concentration was high in runoff from broad-leaved area, and biological degradable compounds was flowed. - Water quality of water from valley was maintained good under non-rainfall and could be utilized as fresh drinking water. Through water quality standard investigation, a countermeasure establishment was necessary to secure a good quality of drinking water - BOD, $COD_{Mn},\;and\;COD_{Cr}$ concentration of Bo-sung river was higher 1.5 times than other 2 streams, and because of high T-N, and T-P concentration in Songgwang stream, the management for this was necessary.
This study suggests a general methodology which is designed for assessing RDOC behavior at the catchment scale by coupling properly a series of steam flow and water quality simulation models and actual monitoring data set. The modified TANK model in which a river routing function is incorporated to the conventional one is applied to simulate the long-term daily stream flow data, and the simulated stream flow data is combined with the 7-parameter log-linear model coupled to the minimum variance unbiased estimator to simulate the long-term daily water quality (BOD, COD and TOC) loads. Finally, the regression analysis between the usually monitored water quality data (BOD, COD and TOC) and RDOC is combined with the simulated water quality data to manifest the spatio-temporal variability of RDOC flux behavior at the Korean TMDL catchment scale.
