Hematite iron ore and waste iron oxide sludge containing about 3-5 wt% $SiO_2$ were purified by three types of method developed on the basis of the Bayer process which is known as the purification process of bauxite ore. The basic principle of the developed methods lies in the fact that the impurities contained in the iron oxides, such as $SiO_2$ and $Al_2O_3$ are soluble in the alkaline reagents. Reaction of the raw materials with KOH was done in pressure vessel, at atmospheric pressure, and by both of these two. By the pressure vessel method $SiO_2$ content was reduced to below 0.5 wt% in the waste iron oxide sludge, while, in iron ore, $SiO_2$ remained at 2-3 wt%. The atmospheric pressure reaction rendered the waste iron oxide sludge $SiO_2$ content below 0.5wt% when the reaction temperature increased to above 90$0^{\circ}C$. The combined method of two previous methods was the most effective process and rendered the refined iron oxide about 300-400ppm of $SiO_2$. Using some refined iron oxides, Ba-ferrite was produced and magnetic properties were measured. The highest quality of magnetic properties obtained in this study were Br=2.09 G, bHc=1.99 KOe, iHc=4.54 KOe, $(BH)_{max}$=1.06 MGOe. Effect of sintering condition and chemical composition will be discussed.

The development of martensitic grades which can be processed in continuous galvanizing lines requires the reduction of the oxides formed on the steel during the hot dip process. This reduction mechanism was investigated in detail by means of High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM) of cross-sectional samples. Annealing of a martensitic steel in a 10% $H_2+N_2$ atmosphere with the dew point of $-35^{\circ}C$ resulted in the formation of a thin $_{C-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ (x>1) oxide film and amorphous $_{a-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ oxide particles on the surface. During the hot dip galvanizing in Zn-0.13%Al, the thin $_{C-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ (x>1) oxide film was reduced by the Al. The $_{a-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ (x<0.9) and $a-SiO_{2}$ oxides however remained embedded in the Zn coating close to the steel/coating interface. No $Fe_{2}Al_{5-X}Zn_{X}$ inhibition layer formation was observed. During hot dip galvanizing in Zn-0.20%Al, the $_{C-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ (x>1) oxide film was also reduced and the amorphous $_{a-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ and $a-SiO_{2}$ particles were embedded in the $Fe_{2}Al_{5-X}Zn_{X}$ inhibition layer formed at the steel/coating interface during hot dipping. The results clearly show that Al in the liquid Zn bath can reduce the crystalline $_{C-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ (x>1) oxides but not the amorphous $_{a-X}MnO.SiO_{2}$ (x<0.9) and $a-SiO_{2}$ oxides. These oxides remain embedded in the Zn layer or in the inhibition layer, making it possible to apply a Zn or Zn-alloy coating on martensitic steel by hot dipping. The hot dipping process was also found to deteriorate the mechanical properties, independently of the Zn bath composition.
Nitrided oxides have been investigated recently for application as a replacement for thermally grown $SiO_2$ in MIS devices. In this paper, thin oxides were nitrided in $N_2$ Plasma ambient. With the measurement of the equivalent paralled conductance and capacitance by the using coductance technique, the characterization of Si-SiON interface is developed. The interface state density of Si-SiON is obtained by $1{\times}10^{11}{\sim}9{\times}10^{11}(eV^{-1}Cm^{-2})$. After${\pm}$B-T stress is performed on the sample, the interface state density gets increased.
Formation of Au particles in nonstoichiometric $Cu_{2-x}{^I}Cu{_2}^{II}O_{3-{\delta}}$ ($x{\approx}0.20$; ${\delta}{\approx}0.10$) oxide from aniline + hydrochloric acid mixtures and chloroauric acid in the ratios 30 : 1; 60 : 1; 90 : 1 (S1-S3) by volume and 0.01 mol of copper acetate, $Cu(OCOCH_3)_2.H_2O$, in each case is performed by sol-gel growth. Powder x-ray diffraction (XRD) results show Au particles are dispersed in tetragonal nonstoichiometric dicopper (I) dicopper (II) oxides, $Cu_{2-x}{^I}Cu{_2}^{II}O_{3-{\delta}}$ ($x{\approx}0.20$; ${\delta}{\approx}0.10$). Average crystallite sizes of Au particles determined using Scherrer equation are found to be in the approximate ranges ${\sim}85-140{\AA}$, ${\sim}85-150{\AA}$ and ${\sim}80-150{\AA}$ in S1-S3, respectively which indicate the formation of Au nano-micro size particles in $Cu_{2-x}{^I}Cu{_2}^{II}O_{3-{\delta}}$ ($x{\approx}0.20$; ${\delta}{\approx}0.10$) oxides. Hysteresis behaviour at 300 K having low loop areas and magnetic susceptibility values ${\sim}5.835{\times}10^{-6}-9.889{\times}10^{-6}emu/gG$ in S1-S3 show weakly ferromagnetic nature of the samples. Broad and isotropic electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) lineshapes of S1-S4 at 300, 77 and 8 K having $g_{iso}$-values ${\sim}2.053{\pm}0.008-2.304{\pm}0.008$ show rapid spin-lattice relaxation process in magnetic $Cu^{2+}$ ($3d^9$) sites as well as delocalized electrons in Au ($6s^1$) nano-micro size particles in the $Cu_{2-x}{^I}Cu{_2}^{II}O_{3-{\delta}}$ ($x{\approx}0.20$; ${\delta}{\approx}0.10$) oxides. Broad and weak UV-Vis diffuse reflectance optical absorption band ~725 nm is assigned to $^2B_{1g}{\rightarrow}^2A_{1g}$ transitions, and the weak band ~470 nm is due to $^2B_{1g}{\rightarrow}^2E_g$ transitions from the ground state $^2B_{1g}$(${\mid}d_{x^2-y^2}$>) of $Cu^{2+}$ ($3d^9$) ions in octahedral coordination having tetragonal distortion.
The effect of$ZrO_2$addition on the microstructure and electrical properties of Ni-Mn oxide NTC thermistors was studied. Major phases present in the sintered bodies of $Ni_{1.0}Mn_{2-x}Zr_xO_4$ were the solid solutions of Ni-Mn-Zr oxides with a cubic spinel structure and the $ZrO_2$ with a tetragonal structure. The $ZrO_2$ was formed by the partial decomposition or incomplete formation of the Ni-Mn-Zr oxides during sintering. With increasing the amount of added $ZrO_2$, the $ZrO_2$ phase increased. The relationship between log resistivity (log p) and the reciprocal of absolute temperature (1/T) of the NTC thermistors prepared was linear, indicative of NTC characteristics. The resistivity, B constant and activation energy of the thermistors increased with increasing $ZrO_2$ content.
Perovskite type oxides of $SrTiO_3,SrZrO_3,and\;SrTi_{1-x}Zr_xO_3$ have been systematically synthesized at $1250^{\circ}C$and $1550^{\circ}C$ with specimens containing additions of up to x=0.9 of zirconium by solid state reactions and characterized by X-ray diffraction. X-ray diffraction studies showed that the compound $SrTi_{1-x}Zr_xO_3$ has cubic structure. The lattice paramters of $SrTi_{1-x}Zr_xO_3$ solid solutions obey the Vegard's law and fairly large increase in volume can acompany the formation of this solution with increasing Zr content(X). Assuming the lattice constants of perovskite type compounds $A(B_{1-x}B'_x)O_3$where $B_{1-x}B'_x$ is $Ti_{1-x}Zr_x$, to be a linear function of the ionic radii of B and B' ions, the disordered ion pair of $Ti^{4+}$and $Zr^{4+}$ was verified from the lattice constants of a series compounds varying x=0,0.05, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 0.9, and 1.0 with known isovalent pairs.
Kinetic investigations on the oxidation of pyrazine and four 2-substituted pyrazines viz., 2-methylpyrazine, 2-ethylpyrazine, 2-methoxypyrazine and 2-aminopyrazine by bromamine-B (BAB) to the respective N-oxides have been studied in HCl$O_4$ medium at 303 K. The reactions show identical kinetics being first-order each in $[BAB]_o\;and\;[pyrazine]_o$, and a fractional- order dependence on $[H^+]$. Effect of ionic strength of the medium and addition of benzenesulfonamide or halide ions showed no significant effect on the reaction rate. The dielectric effect is positive. The solvent isotope effect was studied using $D_2$O. The reaction has been studied at different temperatures and activation parameters for the composite reaction have been evaluated from the Arrhenius plots. The reaction showed 1:1 stoichiometry and the oxidation products of pyrazines were characterized as their respective N-oxides. Under comparable experimental conditions, the oxidation rate of pyrazines increased in the order: 2-aminopyrazine > 2-methoxypyrazine > 2-ethylpyrazine > 2-methylpyrazine > pyrazine. The rates correlate with the Hammett $\sigma$ relationship and the reaction constant $\rho$ was found to be -0.8, indicating that electron donating centres enhance the rate of reaction. An isokinetic temperature of $\beta$ = 333 K, indicated that the reaction was enthalpy controlled. A mechanism consistent with the experimental results has been proposed in which the rate determining step is the formation of an intermediate complex between the substrate and the diprotonated species of the oxidant. The related rate law in consistent with observed results has been deduced.

As operating temperatures of engines or turbines continually increase for higher efficiency, significant amounts of researches have been focused on finding new materials, which would be alternatives to conventional yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) for thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). In this study, phase evolution and thermo-physical properties of $La_2(Zr_{1-x}Hf_x)_2O_7$ pyrochlore systems are investigated for TBC applications. $La_2(Zr_{1-x}Hf_x)_2O_7$ systems are comprised by selecting $La^{3+}$ as A-site ions and $Zr^{4+}/Hf^{4+}$ as B-site ions in $A_2B_2O_7$ pyrochlore structures. For the developed phases in $La_2(Zr_{1-x}Hf_x)_2O_7$ compositions, thermo-physical properties such as thermal conductivity, thermal expansion coefficient are examined. The potential of these $La_2(Zr_{1-x}Hf_x)_2O_7$ compositions for TBC application is also discussed.
Spinel ferrites (NixFe3-xO4; x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0) have been prepared at 550℃ by egg white auto-combustion route using egg white at 550℃ and characterized by physicochemical (TGA, IR, XRD, and SEM) and electrochemical (CV and Tafel polarization) techniques. The presence of characteristic vibration peaks in FT-IR and reflection planes in XRD spectra confirmed the formation of spinel ferrites. The prepared oxides were transformed into oxide film on glassy carbon electrodes by coating oxide powder ink using the nafion solution and investigated their electrocatalytic performance for OER in an alkaline solution. The cyclic voltammograms of the oxide electrode did not show any redox peaks in oxygen overpotential regions. The iR-free Tafel polarization curves exhibited two Tafel slopes (b1 = 59-90 mV decade-1 and b2 = 92-124 mV decade-1) in lower and higher over potential regions, respectively. Ni-substitution in oxide matrix significantly improved the electrocatalytic activity for oxygen evolution reaction. Based on the current density for OER, the 0.75 mol Ni-substituted oxide electrode was found to be the most active electrode among the prepared oxides and showed the highest value of apparent current density (~9 mA cm-2 at 0.85 V) and lowest Tafel slope (59 mV decade-1). The OER on oxide electrodes occurred via the formation of chemisorbed intermediate on the active sites of the oxide electrode and follow the second-order mechanism.
