INFLUENCE OF DIETARY PROTEIN ON THE FRACTIONATION OF SELENIUM IN THE RUMEN OF SHEEP

  • The effects of diets differing in protein content through soybean meal supplementation on ruminal fractionation of selenium (Se) were studied. A $3{\times}3$ Latin square design was used with three Japanese Corriedale wethers (45 kg average body weight), three periods, and three dietary treatment. The three dietary treatments were : Diet 1, without soybean meal supplementation (14% crude protein, CP); Diet 2, with 10% soybean meal supplementation (16.5% CP); and Diet 3, with 20% soybean meal supplementation (19% CP). All the diets had a Se supplementation in the form of sodium selenite at 0.2 mg Se/kg dietary DM. The Se supplement and the concentrate mixture were fed only in the morning before the hay was given. Daily feeding schedule for gay was set at 09:00 and 17:00 h. On the final day of collection period, ruminal fluid samples were obtained at 0.5, 2, 6, 12 and 24 h post-feeding starting at 09:00 h. Total ruminal fluid Se was markedly higher (p<0.05) in Diet 3 than those in Diets 1 and 2 at almost all sampling time except at 24 h. The proportion of Se in soluble protein to the total ruminal Se was higher (p< 0.05) in Diet 3 (40%) followed by Diet 2 (28%) and Diet 1 (21%). The proportion of free inorganic Se to the total ruminal Se was the reverse, especially after two hours where Diet 1 (p<0.05) was higher than the other diets. Bacterial Se was lower (p < 0.05) in Diet 1 than those in Diets 2 and 3 at any sampling time. The highest was observed at 2 h postprandially in all diets with a value of 421, 556, $655{\mu}g/kg$ bacterial DM for Diet 1, 2 and 3, respectively. No differences (p>0.05) were observed on ruminal pH, ammonia and total nolatile fatty acids although increasing protein supplementation tended to decline the ruminal pH and increase ruminal ammonia. This study concludes that increasing dietary protein content by soybean meal supplementation can affect the ruminal Se metabolism.

Quality Characteristics of Onion Jangaji during Aging (숙성조건에 따른 양파장아찌의 품질특성)

  • To aid in manufacturing, this study investigated quality characteristics of onion Jangaji during maturation at 0C, 10C, 20C and room temperature. [Please check that the rewriting of the previous sentence retains the intended meaning]The $^{\circ}Brix$ of onion Jangaji and the maturation solution were 1516% at the end of the maturation process. The salinity of onion Jangaji and the solution increased, and the pH declined to 3.934.31 during processing. The L, a and b color values of onion Jangaji and the solution changed slightly. The total acidity of onion Jangaji and the solution rose slowly. The texture (hardness, fracturability, adhesiveness, cohesiveness, springiness, gumminess and chewiness) of onion Jangaji was determined using a texture analyzer, and varied with storage temperature. In the sensory evaluation of onion Jangaji, low temperature storage gave higher acceptability ratings than room temperature with respect to taste, color, flavor, texture and overall acceptability.

Impact of Environmentally-friendly Organic Agro-Materials on Chemical Properties of Remediated Soils (친환경 유기농자재 처리에 따른 정화토양의 개선 효과)

  • Soil contamination has continuously increased worldwide, thus the remediation for the contaminated soils has risen steadily. However, the consideration of ecological safety for the remediated soils and their agricultural uses has been very limited. Therefore, this study was to investigate the influences of selected environmentally-friendly agricultural materials, organic by-product fertilizer (OF), charcoal (CC), and biochar (BC), as soil conditioners for improving poor chemical properties of fuel-oil removed soil by land farming technique. Two different remediated soils, remediated soil A (RSA) and remediated soil B (RSB), were selected. Soil texture of both RSA and RSB was sandy loam. The chemical properties of RSA and RSB were as follows: soil pHs of 8.5 and 8.7, soil organic matter contents of 7.4 and 5.5g $kg^{-1}$, total nitrogen contents of 0.26 and 0.10g $kg^{-1}$, available phosphorus concentrations of 7.2 and 4.4mg $kg^{-1}$, and exchangeable calcium concentrations of 14.8 and $11.7cmol_c$ $kg^{-1}$, respectively. Results of the properties were not reached for the optimal values for cultivating crops that were recommended by National Academy of Agricultural Science at Rural Development Administration in Korea. However, after applying OF, CC, and BC, the chemical properties of soils were selectively improved, which were that soil organic matter content and available phosphorus concentration increased, whereas the soil pH were not changed. In particular, the chemical properties were positively changed more with the application of 5.0% biochar. Thus, continuous management of the remediated soils with applying the eco-friendly agricultural materials can improve the quality of reme-diated soils.

  • One of water and/or methanol extracts from 14 herbal deugs which were screened using murine splenocytes showed immunosuppressive activities previously. After water extract from Xanthium strumarium was treated with chloroform. $100 \mu{g/ml}$ of water layer (XS-WCI) has very strong immunosimulating activities tested by $^3H$-thmidine incorporation (control as $100 \mu{g/ml}$, 26345 cpm was 69515 cpm). MLR also appears to be simulated strongly (control vs $100 \mu{g/ml}$, 4962 cpm vs 78688 cpm). When $100 \mu{g/ml}$ of XS-WCI and $0.8 \mu{g/ml}$ of concanavalin a (ConA) were added. more $^3H$-thymidine were incorporated significantly, compared with $0.8 \mu{g/ml}$ of ConA only. In contrast with ConA. results from $5 \mu{/ml}$ of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and $100 \mu{g/ml}$ of XS-WCI were not different. compared with $5\mu{/ml}$of LPS only. These results indicated the responses of XS-WCI to B cell and T cell may be different. XS-WCI was injected intraperitoneally (10 mg/kg. 50mg/kg/ 100 mg/kg) for 4 days or 10 days and tested secretion of IgM or IgG by direct and indirect hemolytic plaque-forming cell assays, respectively. Numbers of hemolytic plaques for both IgM and IgG were increased significantly. Especially, secretion of IgGs was increased more than 10 times. After administration of XS-WCI for 7 days (50 mg/kg. 100 mg/kg) splenomegaly deu to graft vs host reaction was observed. Human lymhocytes separated from whole blood by Ficoll-Hypaque method were also proliferated after treatment of $10 \mu{g/ml}$ and $50 \mu{g/ml}$ of XS-WCI. As seen in murine lymphocytes, human lymphocyte proliferation was increased synergistically after treatment with both of XS-WCI and phytohemagglutinin (PHA). It appears that XS-WCI may have potential immunosimulating activities and that it remains to be purified further for isolation of active components.

  • KSTAR (Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research) current lead system (CLS) has a role to interconnect magnet power supply (MPS) in room temperature (300 K) and superconducting (SC) bus-line, electrically. For the first plasma experiments, it should be assembled 4 current leads (CL) on toroidal field (TF) current lead box (CLB) and 14 leads on poloidal field (PF) CLB. Two current leads, with the design currents 17.5 kA, and SC bus-lines are connected in parallel to supply 35 kA DC currents on TF magnet. Whereas, it could supply $20\;{\sim}\;26\;kA$ to each pairs of PF magnets during more than 350 s. At the cold terminals of the leads, there are joined SC bus-lines and it was constructed helium coolant control system, aside from main tokamak system, to protect heat flux through current leads and enhanced Joule heat due to supplied currents. Throughout the establishment processes, it was tested the high vacuum pumping, helium leak of the helium lines and hardwares mounted between the helium lines, flow controls for CL, and liquid nitrogen cool-down of possible parts (current leads, CL helium lines, and thermal shield helium lines for CLB), for the accomplishment of the required performances.

Studies on the Efficacy of the Newly Developed Automatic Liquid Feeder for 7-day Old Early Weaned Piglets (7일령 조기 이유자돈에 대한 액상사료 자동급이기 이용효과)

  • This study was conducted to test the efficacy of the automatic liquid feeder(designated as NLRI) developed by National Livestock Research Institute, Korea for 7-day old early-weaning piglets. The other automatic liquid feeder imported from USA(designated as IALF) was used for a comparative purpose. A total of sixty piglets of 7 days of age were allotted to three treatments. The control group of 20 piglets was raised by their own sows until 21 days of age, while others were shifted to automatic liquid feeders of either NLRI or IALF on 7 days of age and reared during 14 days post-weaning. After then, all the piglets were fed nutritionally identical mash diets until 70 days of age. Compared with control group, body weight of piglets reared on automatic liquid feeders were lighter(P〈0.05) at 21 days of age [5.55kg (control) vs 4.97 (NLRI) and 4.98kg (IALF)], while heavier(P〈0.05) at 70 days of age(24.82kg vs 30.17 and 29.42kg). The results indicated that pigs reared on liquid feeding showed higher(P〈0.05) average daily gain than control pigs during the whole experimental period [346.7g (control) vs 425.8 (NLRI) and 416.1g (IALF)], while no difference was found in feed/gain (1.67 vs 1.78 and 1.84). There was no difference in growth performance and incidence of diarrhea between two automatic liquid feeders, NLRI and IALF. Compared with control group, intestinal villi tended to be shorter in liquid feeding group during the first week, but were recovered within two weeks. The results suggest that the automatic liquid feeder newly developed by National Livestock Research Institute, Korea can be successfully used for rearing young piglets weaned at very early age.

  • This study was undertaken in order to examine the effect of ginger, gerlic and red pepper, usually used as the ingredients of Kimchi, on the growth and acid production of Lact. plantarum ATCC 8014 and Lact. fermenti ATCC 9338 during incubation in the medium containing different amount of each extract. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The effects of ginger extract a. The growth of Lact. plantarum ATCC 8014 and Lact. fermenti ATCC 9338 tended to be stimulated as the amount of extract added into the medium increased in a certain amount (3.64mg soluble solid/ml). b. The pH of the culture medium of Lact. plantarum ATCC 8014 became lower to some degree and acid production tended to be stimulated but acid production of Lact. fermenti ATCC 9338 tended to be suppressed as the amount of extract added in a certain amount (3.64mg soluble solid/ml) increased. 2. The effect of garlic extract a. The growth of Lact. plantarum ATCC 8014 and Lact. fermenti ATCC 9338 tended to be stim ulated as the amount of extract added in a certain amount (31.7 mg soluble solid/ml) increased. b. The acid production of Lact plantarum ATCC 8014 was suppressed (p<0.01) and drop in pH was suppressed (p<0.05) as the amount of extract added in a certain amount increased. A molecule has a cis-typed molecular structure having the form of "the substituted butene backbone, C-C(S)=C(NO$_2$)-C, connecting to a sulfur atom with the methylbenzene ring and to a nitro group. The methylbenzene ring and the substituted butene moiety are nearly planar with the maximum deviations from their own molecular planes, 0.018 ${\AA}$ for the C(1) atom of the benzene group and 0.045 ${\AA}$ for the N atom of the NO$_2$ group, respectively. The angles to the plane of the butene backbone are 88.5$^{\circ}$from the plane of the methyl-benzene and 78.6$^{\circ}$from the plane of the nitro group. Rotation of the nitro group from the butene plane seems to reduced contribution of resonance structure involving the nitro group, and resultant repulsion between the O(2) atom of SO$_2$ and the O(3) atom of NO$_2$ appears to be 2.894 ${\AA}$ longer than an expected van der Waals distance of 2.80 ${\AA}$.

The Initial Growth of Scirpus planiculmis and its Herbicidal Response for the Screening (Screening을 위한 새섬매자기(Scirpus planiculmis) 초기생육(初期生育) 및 제초제(除草劑) 반응성(反應性))

  • The initial growth and herbicidal responses of Scirpus planiculmis were examined under both laboratory and greenhouse condition. Initial growth of S. planiculmis at two different soils(soil A and B), was compared with the growth at normal paddy soil, and growth rates at two soils were 32% and 86% as compared to the growth rates at normal paddy soil. Two different soils were soil A(rice-uncultivable) and soil B(rice-cultivable). Transplanted(2.5 leaf stage) and direct seeded rice(Dongjinbyeo) could not grow at soil A. The growth of transplanted rice at soil B was almost same as the growth at normal paddy soil, but the growth of direct seeded rice was 50% of the growth at normal paddy soil. S. planiculmis among the perennial weeds was most tolerant to NaCl, and Cyperus serotinus, Eleocharis kuroguwai, Sagittaria pygmaea, Sagittaria trifolia, Potamogeton distinctus were followed. The intial growth rate of S. planiculmis was more rapid than C. serotinus. Cutting types and times of corm reduced 20-40% of the initial growth of S. planiculmis. During the initial growth of S. planiculmis, the growth of S. planiculmis was severly inhibited by the earlier removal of corm from seedlings, and it represents that the corm plays an important role in the initial growth of this species. Bentazone among 14 commercialized herbicides showed the best safety on direct seeded rice and the highest control effect agaist S. planiculmis.

The Impact of Justice of Layoff on Management Trust, Job Satisfaction and Organizational Commitment in the Hotel Corporations (호텔기업에 있어 구조조정상의 공정성 지각이 경영진의 신뢰, 직무만족 및 조직몰입에 미치는 영향)

  • Since financial crisis of IMF resulted in intensive competitiveness and adverse management environment, many hotel industries have responded it with restructuring. Since this restructuring is accompanied by reduction of employees, hence comes the recognition of justice in the procedure of restructuring. When the surviving employees in the restructuring process recognize unfairness in the procedure and practical operations, organization effectiveness can not be maintained due to losing trust of their employers. In this paper I will examine the relationship between validity of restructuring and compensatory programs for layoffs and surviving employees' trust of the employers. Also I will find out the relationship between remaining employees' trust of the employers and their job satisfaction and organization commitment. Through this relationship, we can prepare an alternative to reduce negative effect of restructuring. The hypotheses of this study are proposed as follows: H1: The higher surviving employees' recognition of procedural justice in restructuring process is, the higher their trust with a manager of the company is. H2: The higher surviving employees' recognition of distributive justice in restructuring process is, the higher their trust with a manager of the company is. H3: The higher surviving employees' recognition of procedural justice in restructuring process is, the higher their job satisfaction is. H4: The higher surviving employees' recognition of distributive justice in restructuring process is, the higher their job satisfaction is. H5: The higher surviving employees' recognition of procedural justice in restructuring process is, the higher their organization commitment is. H6: The higher surviving employees' recognition of distributive justice in restructuring process is, the higher their organization commitment is. H7: The higher surviving employees' trust with a manager of the company in restructuring process is, the higher their job satisfaction is. H8: The higher surviving employees' trust with a manager of the company in restructuring process is, the higher their organization commitment is. For the purposes of this study, employees working in luxury hotels located in Seoul were targeted. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed to those who consented with the investigation after explaining the purpose of the survey. A total of 500 questionnaires were distributed and 450 questionnaire were returned to the researcher for analysis. 430 of the returned questionnaires were used for analysis. As for the education for this survey, 250 junior college graduates or under (58.1%), 143 college graduates (33.3%) and 37 graduate school graduates (8.6%). As for the marital status, 315 persons (73.3%) are single and 115 are married (26.7%). As for the monthly income, 49 people (11.48%) are less than 2 million won, 148 (34.4%) are between 2 million and less than 2.5 million won, 153 (35.6%) are between 2.5 million to less than 3 million won, 80 (18.6%) are more than 3 million won. As for the workplace, 293 people (68.1%) work for the F&B department, 73 (17.0%) for rooms department, 41 (9.5%) for operation/ marketing department, 23 (5.3%) for account/ general affair department. As for the period of employment, 85 people (19.8%) are less than 5 years, 150 (34.9%) are between 6 to 9 years, 143 (33.3%) are between 10 to 14 years. and 52 (3.%) are more than 15 years. An exploratory factor analysis was used to survey validity and reliability of calculating tool on perceived values. This study used correlation between individual items and whole items and Cronbach's alpha value of multiple-item scale which is usually used to assess scale and reliability. Reliability of conceptual sub-dimension was assessed by basing on repeated procedure of correlation between individual items and whole items and factor loading. 1. Verification of correlation between validity of restructuring and trust This research showed that procedural and distributive justice of restructuring affects trust positively. The path coefficient between procedural justice of restructuring and trust is 0.719(t=10.135, p=0.000), and thereby the higher procedural justice results in higher trust. The path coefficient between distributive justice of restructuring and trust is 0.160(t=3.291, p=0.001), and thereby the higher distributive justice results in higher trust. Hence H1 and H2 are accepted. 2. Verification of correlation between validity of restructuring and job satisfaction The path coefficient between procedural justice of restructuring and job satisfaction is 0.179(t=2.202, p=0.028), and thereby the higher procedural justice results in higher job satisfaction. The path coefficient between distributive justice of restructuring and job satisfaction is 0.074(t=1.620, p=0.105), and thereby distributive justice of restructuring has no relationship with job satisfaction. Hence H3 is accepted, but H4 is removed. 3. Verification of correlation between validity of restructuring and organization commitment The path coefficient between procedural justice of restructuring and organization commitment is 0.188(t=2.466, p=0.014), and thereby the higher procedural justice results in higher organization commitment. The path coefficient between distributive justice of restructuring and organization commitment is 0.118(t=2.720, p=0.007), and thereby the higher distributive justice results in higher organization commitment. Hence H5 and H6 are accepted. 4. Verification of correlation between trust and job satisfaction The path coefficient between trust and job satisfaction is 0.610(t=6.736, p=0.000), and thereby the correlation has a meaningful result. Since the higher trust of the employer results in higher job satisfaction, H7 is accepted. 5. Verification of correlation between trust and organization commitment The path coefficient between procedural justice of restructuring and job satisfaction is 0.446(t=5.547 p=0.000), and thereby the higher trust of the employer results in higher organization commitment. Hence H8 is accepted. This research aimed to help the employers of hotel industries by analyzing the effects of validity of restructuring on employees' trust, job satisfaction and organization commitment. The research found that employer's validity of restructuring has significant affects on the degree of employee's trust with a manager, thereby reducing the negative effects of restructuring and enhancing organization commitment and job satisfaction. The principal purpose of this research is to confirm the correlation between employees' perceived validity of restructuring and their trust with a manager. Also whether this correlation results in competitive edge of the company is also investigated. It is also pointed out that employees had to participated the procedure of restructuring, sharing the philosophy and reason of restructuring. This participation and furthermore compensatory methods can reduce employees' anxiety of organization operations. Variable of trust appeared to have impact on intermediation effect between perceived variable of validity and job satisfaction, organization commitment, so that increase of trust with a manager plays an crucial role in increasing organization effectiveness. Since this research did not cover whole hotel industries which underwent restructuring, it showed a limit. Unlike previous studies which dealt with validity and trust of superior bosses, this research focussed on employers. Also the organization citizenship which is not considered in this study will be dealt with in the future study.
