  • Corn has been used for a long time as a traditional remedy, as well as a food source. We previously reported that in vitro supplementation of corn water extracts enhanced the proliferation of splenocytes, compared to the control group. In this study, we examined the immunomodulative effect of a water extract of corn. Seven to eight weeks old mice(Balb/c) were fed an ad libitum chow diet, and were orally administrated a water extract of corn every other day, for four weeks, at two different concentrations(50 and 500 mg/kg B.W). Cytokine production(IL-2, IL-10 and IFN-${\gamma}$) by macrophages stimulated with LPS or not stimulated with LPS was detected by ELISA assay using the cytokine kit. In an ex vivo study, the cytokines IL-2, IL-10 and IFN-${\gamma}$ were detected at 500 mg/kg b.w. supplementation group with LPS stimulation in all cases. Also, the ratio of IFN-${\gamma}$ to IL-10 was in the range of 0~3 with mitogen stimulation, such as con A and LPS. In conclusion, this study suggests that in mice, corn extracts may enhance immune function by regulating the cytokine production(IL-2, IL-10 and IFN-${\gamma}$) of the activated macrophages.

  • This paper focuses on the study of dynamic analysis of thick plates resting on Winkler foundation. The governing equation is derived from Mindlin's theory. This study is a parametric analysis of the reflections of the thickness / span ratio, the aspect ratio and the boundary conditions on the earthquake excitations are studied. In the analysis, finite element method is used for spatial integration and the Newmark-${\beta}$ method is used for the time integration. While using finite element method, a new element is used. This element is 17-noded and it's formulation is derived from using higher order displacement shape functions. C++ program is used for the analyses. Graphs are presented to help engineers in the design of thick plates subjected to earthquake excitations. It is concluded that the 17-noded finite element is used in the earthquake analysis of thick plates. It is shown that the changes in the aspect ratio are more effective than the changes in the aspect ratio. The center displacements of the reinforced concrete thick clamped plates for b/a=1, and t/a=0.2, and for b/a=2, and t/a=0.2, reached their absolute maximum values of 0.00244 mm at 3.48 s, and of 0.00444 mm at 3.48 s, respectively.

  • The Grignard reactions of bis(chloromethyl)dimethylsilane (1) with trimethylchlorosilane (2) in THF give both the intermolecular C-Si coupling and intramolecular C-C coupling products. At beginning stage, 1 reacts with Mg to give the mono-Grignard reagent ClCH2Me2SiCH2MgCl (1) which undergoes the C-Si coupling reaction to give MC2Si(CH2SiMe3)2 3, or C-C coupling to a mixture of formula Me3SiCH2(SiMe2CH2CH2)nR1 (n = 1, 2, 3, ..; 4a, R1I = H: 4b, R1 = SiMe3). In the reaction, two reaction pathways are involved: a) Ⅰ reacts with 2 to give Me3SiCH2SiMe2CH2Cl 6 which further reacts with Mg to afford a Me2SiCH2Mel-SiCH2MgCl (Ⅱ) or b) I cyclizes intramolecularly to a silacyclopropane intermediate A, which undergoes a ring-opening polymerization by the nucleophilic attack of the intermediates I or Ⅱ, followed by the termination reaction with H2O and 2, to give 4a and 4b, respectively. As the mole ratio of 2/1 increased from 2 to 16 folds, the formation of product 3 increased from 16% to 47% while the formation of polymeric products 4 was reduced from 60% to 40%. The intermolecular C-Si coupling reaction of the pathway a becomes more favorable than the intramolecular C-C coupling reaction of the pathways b at the higher mole ratio of 2/1.

  • A numerical study was conducted to show the effect of aspect ratio on the analogy of the developing laminar flows between in orthogonally rotating straight duct and in a stationary curved duct of rectangular cross-section. In order. to clarify the similarity of two nows, dimensionless parameters (equation omitted) and Rossby Ro= $w_{m}$$\Omega$ $d_{h}$, in a rotating straight duct were used as a set corresponding to Dean number, (equation omitted), and curvature ratio, λ=R/ $d_{h}$, in a stationary curved duct. Four. different aspect ratios A=0.25, 0.5, 2 and 4 were considered. Under the condition that the magnitudes of Ro and λ were large enough to satisfy the 'asymptotic invariance property' and the aspect ratio was larger than 1, there were strong quantitative similarities between the two flows such as flow patterns, friction factors, and maximum axial velocity magnitudes fur the same values of $K_{LR}$ and $K_{LC}$ . On the other hand, as the aspect ratio decreased below 1 (A=0.25 and 0.5), the difference of the secondary flow intensity between these two flows was enhanced and therefore the analogy of two flows was not so evident as that of the larger aspect ratio (A=2 and 4). 4).nd 4).

  • This paper presents turbulent characteristics of an impinging F-O-O-F type injector in which fuel ad oxidizer impinge on each other to atomize under the different momentum ratio. Water was used as an inert simulant liquid instead of fuel and oxidizer. The droplet size and velocity in the impinging spray flow field were measured using a PDPA. The gradient of the spray half-width(b$_2$) along the long-axis direction declined throughout the entire spray flow field with increasing the momentum ratio from 1.19 to 6.48. However, the gradient of the half-width(b$_1$) along the short-axis direction decreased with increasing the momentum ratio. The turbulence intensity and turbulent kinetic energy were converged into the center of the center of the initial region with increasing the momentum ratio. As the momentum ratio increased from MR=1.19 to MR=6.48, the turbulent shear stress decreased. The results of this study can be used for the design of an impinging type injector for liquid rackets.

  • In this paper, we introduce the D-ratio of a rational map $f:{\mathbb{P}}^n{\dashrightarrow}{\mathbb{P}}^n$, defined over ${\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}$, whose indeterminacy locus is contained in a hyperplane H on ${\mathbb{P}}^n$. The D-ratio r(f; ${\bar{V}}$) characterizes endomorphisms and provides a useful height inequality on ${\mathbb{P}}^n({\bar{\mathbb{Q}}}){\backslash}H$. We also provide a dynamical application: preperiodic points of dynamical systems of small D-ratio are of bounded height.

  • This study focused on a heavy-duty natural gas engine fuelled with HCNG (CNG: 70 vol%, hydrogen: 30 vol%) and CNG. To study the emission characteristics of an HCNG engine with high compression ratio, the exhaust gas of CNG and HCNG fuel were analyzed in relation to the change in the compression ratio at the half load condition. The results showed that the thermal efficiency improved with an increase in the compression ratio. Consequently, $CO_2$ emission decreased. CO emission increased with inefficient oxidation due to the low exhaust gas temperature. $NO_x$ emission with high compression ratio was increased at the same excess air ratio condition. However, $NO_x$ emission was not affected by a compression ratio exceeding ${\lambda}$ = 1.9 because of the same MBT timing.

  • Clustering schemes have been adopted as an efficient solution to prolong network lifetime and improve network scalability. In such clustering schemes cluster ratio is represented by the rate of the number of cluster heads and the number of total nodes, and affects the performance of clustering schemes. In this paper, we mathematically analyze an optimal clustering ratio in wireless sensor networks. We consider a multi-hop to one-hop transmission case and aim to provide the optimal cluster ratio to minimize the system hop-count and maximize packet reception ratio between nodes. We examine its performance through a set of simulations. The simulation results show that the proposed optimal cluster ratio effectively reduce transmission count and enhance energy efficiency in wireless sensor networks.

  • This study investigates the effect of site class, post-yield stiffness ratio, damping ratio, yield-strength reduction factor, and natural period on inelastic displacement ratio of bilinear SDF systems located at the sites classified as NEHRP site class B,C,D. The previous studies developed inelastic displacement ratio using equal displacement rule in the intermediate and long period range. But, this approximation overestimates the inelastic displacement ratio. Furthermore, inelastic displacement ratio has not been developed for the systems having a damping ratio less than 5%. This study conducts nonlinear regression analysis for proposing equations for calculating median and deviation of the inelastic displacement ratio of the bilinear SDOF system having damping ratios ranging from 0 to 20%. Using median and deviation of the inelastic displacement ratio, probabilistic inelastic displacement ratio is estimated, which can be used for performance-based seismic evaluation.

  • A two-phase closed thermosyphon was one of the most effective devices in the removing heat because of its simple structure, thermal diode characteristics, wide operating temperature range and so on. In this study, a two-phase closed thermosyphon(working fluid PFC(C6F14), container copper(inner grooved surface)) was fabricated with a reservoir which can change the fill charge ratio. The experiments were performed in the range of 50~600W heat flow rate and 10~70% fill charge ratio. The results were compared with some correlations that were presented by Rohsenow and Immura et al. in the evaporator, by Nusselt, Gross and Uehara et al. in the condenser and by Cohen and Bayley, Wallis, Kutateladze and Faghri et al. in heat transfer limitation etc.. The heat transfer coefficient at the evaporator increased with the input power. However the effect of the fill charge ratio was nearly negligible. At the condenser, it showed an opposite trend to the evaporator and with increase of the fill charge ratio, showed some enhancement of heat transfer. The heat transport limitation was occurred by the dry-out limitation for small fill charge ratio(10%) and presented about 100W. For the case of large fill charge ratio(Ψ$\geq$40%), it was occurred by the flooding limitation at about 500W.
