  • Recombinant bioluminescent bacteria were used to monitor and classify the to xicity of azo dyes. Two constitutive bioluminescent bacteria, Photobacterium phosphoreum and Es-Cherichia coli, E, coli GC2 (lac::luxCOABE), were used to detect the cellular toxicity of the azo dyes. In addition, four stress-inducible bioluminestent E. coli, DPD2794 (recA::luxCDABE), a DNA damage Sensitive strain; DPD2540 (fabA::luxCDABE), a membrane damage sensitive strain; DPD2511 (katG::luxCDABE), an oxidative damage sensitive strain; and TV1061 (grpE::luxCDABE), a protein damage sensitive strain, were used to provide information about the type of toxicity caused by crystal violet, the most toxic dye of the 16 azo dyes tested. These results suggest that azo dyes result in serious cellular toxicity in bacteria, and that toxicity monitoring and classific ation of some azo dyes, In the field, may be possible using these recombinant bioluminescent bacteria.

  • A series of azo disperse dyes having dicyanovinyl groups was synthesized by the Knoevenagel condensation with malononitrile from carbonyl substituted phenylazo disperse dyes which were prepared by conventional diazo coupling reaction of aniline derivatives as diazo components. A variety of coupling components such as anilines, an indole and a pyridone were used. The azo disperse dyes were evaluated for their spectral properties and dyeing assessment on the polyester fabrics. The azo disperse dyes containing dicyanovinyl groups showed bathochromic shifts and darker colors due to increased electron withdrawing strength in their azo components and extended conjugation by dicyanovinyl groups than their parent carbonyl substituted azo dyes. The dyes containing 2-acetylamino-5-methoxy substituent in the coupling component exhibited higher wavelength of maximum absorbance (${\lambda}_{max}$) and significant negative solvatochromism than those of other dyes due to intramolecular hydrogen bonding.

  • Azo dyes are aromatic compounds characterized by one or more azo bonds $(R_l-N=N-R_2)$. More than 800,000 tons of dyes are produced annually worldwide, of which 60-70% are azo dyes. During manufacturing, an estimated 10-15% is released into the environment. Aside from their negative aesthetic effects, certain azo dyes have been shown to be toxic and, in some cases, these compounds are carcinogenic and mutagenic. To establish biological wastewater treatment of azo dye, it is essential to discover azo dye-degrading microorganisms. In this report, sludge-contaminated with dyes were gathered through wastewater outlets from the industrial regions. The following to separation of bacteria within them, bacteria which decolorize methyl red, a azo dye, were selected and destined.

  • The four azo dyes such as Amaranth (FD & C Red No. 2), Tartrazine (FD & C Yellow No. 4), sunset Yellow (FD & C Yellow No. 5) and Allura red (FD & C Red No. 40) are currently employed as a food additives in Korea. In this study, the effects of these azo dyes on the hepatic microsomal mixed function oxidase systems in Rats. (i.e., Cyt. P-450, Cyt. b$_5$, NADPH cyt. c-reductase and azo reductase) were investigated. Furthermore, to determine the relationship among the electron transport systems, each level of azo reductase, Cyt. P-450 and NADPH cyt. c-reductase was measured upon the administration of phenobarbital (known as an inducer of Cyt. P-450), 3-methylcholanthrene (Known as an inducer of Cyt. P-448), CoCl$_2$ (inhibitor on Cyt. P-450) or $CCl_4$ (inhibitor on Cyt. P-450). The results of these studies are as follows; (1) The levels of Cyt. P-450 and Cyt. b$_5$ were decreased upon the administration of these azo dyes. (2) When the level of Cyt. P-450 was decreased, the azo reductase activity was also decreased. (3) These azo dyes did not show any significant effect on the level of NADPH cyt. c-reductase. (4) The administration of 3-methylcholanthrene resulted in the elevation of azo reductase activity. The 3-methylcholanthrene may be responsible for the induction of CO-insensitive electron transport system.

  • The nonionic surfactant properties of ethoxylated azo dyes, such ai cloud point and surface tension have been investigated. The synthesized ethoxylated azo dyes could dye polyester fabric without any special pre-treatment. When the average number of ethylene oxide (EO) in the ethoxylated azo dye reached 6, its fixation could exceed $90^{\circ}C$ from the thermosol dyeing process. The average degree of condensation of ethylene glycol in the chain was interrelated with the dyeing results and did not affect on the maximum absorption wavelength (λmax) of the polyoxyethylene dye. When the average length of polyoxyethylene chain decreased, the molecular weight of dyes became smaller and the fixation of dyes was improved.

  • The interaction between azo dyes and cationic surfactant was studied by absorption spectroscopy and fluorescent Rayleigh scattering. In order to presume the structure of formed micelle, methyl orange and ethyl orange as azo dyes and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as cationic surfactant were used. Infomations about interaction parameter including absorption maxima, optimal conditions, and intensity of fluorescent Rayleigh scattering were obtained. When azo dyes and CTAB are formed 1 : 1 complex, it showed the strongest intensity of fluorescent Rayleigh scattering. On going from mixed micelle to homomicell, It suggests successively several intermediate steps of complex structure which can be distinguished clearly from one another.

  • Some phthalimidyl azo dyes containing N,N-diethyl or N,N-di($\beta$-methoxycarbonylethyl) group have been attempted to apply onto two kinds of polyurethane based materials and rationalize their dyeability and fastness comparing with those of some commercial disperse dyes. Phthalimidyl azo dye showed 66~98% of exhaustion yield at $120^{\circ}C$ by a conventional exhaust dyeing method. The dyeings were found to have a higher wash fastness with both fabrics in comparison with those of commercial dyes which indicates lower thermomigration and efficient alkali clearable properties of phthalimidyl ring and/or diester group during post-dyeing process.

  • The influence of solvent polarity on the absorption spectra of some synthesized azo dye with heterocyclic moieties and ${\beta}$-naphthol (1-3) have been investigated using a UV-Visible spectrophotometer. The spectral characteristics of the azo dyes (1-3) in different solvents at room temperature were analyzed. The solvatochromic empirical variables like ${\pi}^*$, ${\alpha}$, and ${\beta}$ have been used to discuss the solvatochromic behaviour of the dyes and to evaluate their contributions to the solute-solvent interactions. A multi-parameter regression model for quantitative assessment of the solute/solvent interaction and the absorption has been used to explain the solvent effect on azo dyes (1-3).

  • Temporarily solubilized azo disperse dyes containing ${\beta}$-sulfatoethylsufonyl group were applied to acetate fabric and the feasibility of dispersant-free dyeing was investigated. The color yields of the dyes on acetate fabric were found to be dependent on dye bath pH as well as dyeing temperature. The optimum results were obtained at pH 6 and $80^{\circ}C$. The dyes showed good exhaustion and levelling properties. Vinylsulfone derivatives of the dyes were prepared and applied to acetate with dispersant. Dyeing properties of the temporarily solubilized disperse dyes were similar to or better than those of the vinylsulfone dyes. The dyes showed moderate to good fastness properties on acetate.
