Improved load-following capability is one of the most important technical tasks of a pressurized water reactor. Controlling the nuclear reactor core during load-following operation leads to some difficulties. These difficulties mainly arise from nuclear reactor core limitations in local power peaking: the core is subjected to sharp and large variation of local power density during transients. Axial offset (AO) is the parameter usually used to represent the core power peaking. One of the important local power peaking components in nuclear reactors is axial power peaking, which continuously changes. The main challenge of nuclear reactor control during load-following operation is to maintain the AO within acceptable limits, at a certain reference target value. This article proposes a new robust approach to AO control of pressurized water reactors during load-following operation. This method uses robust feedback-linearization control based on the multipoint kinetics reactor model (neutronic and thermal-hydraulic). In this model, the reactor core is divided into four nodes along the reactor axis. Simulation results show that this method improves the reactor load-following capability in the presence of parameter uncertainty and disturbances and can use optimum control rod groups to maneuver with variable overlapping.
This paper studies the seismic behavior of reinforced concrete (RC) walls with encased cold-formed and thin-walled (CFTW) steel truss, which can be used as an alternative to the conventional RC walls or steel reinforced concrete (SRC) composite walls for high-rise buildings in high seismic regions. Seven one-fourth scaled RC wall specimens with encased CFTW steel truss were designed, manufactured and tested to failure under reversed cyclic lateral load and constant axial load. The test parameters were the axial load ratio, configuration and volumetric steel ratio of encased web brace. The behaviors of the test specimens, including damage formation, failure mode, hysteretic curves, stiffness degradation, ductility and energy dissipation, were examined. Test results indicate that the encased web braces can effectively improve the ductility and energy dissipation capacity of RC walls. The steel angles are more suitable to be used as the web brace than the latticed batten plates in enhancing the ductility and energy dissipation. Higher axial load ratio is beneficial to lateral load capacity, but can result in reduced ductility and energy dissipation capacity. A volumetric ratio about 0.25% of encased web brace is believed cost-effective in ensuring satisfactory seismic performance of RC walls. The axial load ratio should not exceed the maximum level, about 0.20 for the nominal value or about 0.50 for the design value. Numerical analyses were performed to predict the backbone curves of the specimens and calculation formula from the Chinese Code for Design of Composite Structures was used to predict the maximum lateral load capacity. The comparison shows good agreement between the test and predicted results.

Fatigue life prediction under multi-axial variable load were performed for Aluminium 7075-T651 alloy using SAE Notched specimen & Torque tube shaft component specimen. When variable multiaxial load is applied to material, maximum damaged plane(critical plane) change. To clarify the situation, experiment is performed on two different changing load path. For multiaxial fatigue life prediction, miner rule is expanded to critical plane theory. Shear based parameter and Elliptical parameter give better correlation. This suggests that miner rule can be applicable on multi-axial variable load.
Stiffened coupled shear walls (SCSW) are under axial load resulting from their weight and this axial load affects the behavior of walls because of their excessive height. In this paper, based on the continuum approach, the optimal position of the stiffening beam on the stiffened coupled shear walls is investigated considering the effect of uniformly distributed axial loads. Moreover, the effect of the height of stiffened coupled shear walls on the optimal position of the stiffening beam has been studied with and without considering the axial force effect. A computer program has been developed in MATLAB and numerical examples have been solved to demonstrate the reliability of this method. The effects of the various flexural rigidities of the stiffening beam on the internal forces and the lateral deflection of the structure considering axial force effect have also been investigated.

To observe the confinement effects of Carbon Fiber Sheet(CFS) on the high-strength R/C short columns, Fifteen specimens with CFS were manufactured and tested under uni-axial compressive load. Major variables of this study are amount, spacing, type of CFS and amount of transverse steel. Increasing the amount of transverse steel and CFS, compressive strength and axial rigidity is improved. R/C columns with transverse steel and CFS exhibited less axial stress than columns with only CFS. From the test results, it is shown that the area confined with transverse steel and CFS is considerably important to evaluate axial stress of R/C short columns.

The present paper provides plastic limit load solutions of axial and circumferential through-wall cracked pipes based on detailed three-dimensional (3-D) finite element (FE) limit analysis using elastic-perfectly-plastic behavior. As a loading condition, axial tension, global bending moment, internal pressure, combined tension and bending and combined internal pressure and bending are considered for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes, while only internal pressure is considered for axial through-wall cracked pipes. Especially, more emphasis is given for through-wall cracked pipes subject to combined loading. Comparisons with existing solutions show a large discrepancy in short through-wall crack (both axial and circumferential) for internal pressure. In the case of combined loading, the FE limit analyses results show thickness effect on limit load solutions. Furthermore, the plastic limit load solution for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes under bending is applied to derive plastic $\eta\;and\;{\gamma}$-factor of testing circumferential through-wall cracked pipes to estimate fracture toughness. Being based on detailed 3-D FE limit analysis, the present solutions are believed to be meaningful fur structural integrity assessment of through-wall cracked pipes.

This experimental investigation was conducted to examine the seismic performance of reinforced concrete bridge columns. The columns were subjected to a constant axial load and a cyclic horizontal load-inducing reversed bending moment. The variables studied in this research are the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement ($P_s$ =0.96, 1.44 per cent) and axial load ratio (0.05, 0.1, 0.2 P/$P_o$). Test results show that bridge columns with 50 per cent higher amounts of transverse reinforcement than that required by seismic provisions of ACI 318-02 showed ductile behaviour. For bridge columns with axial load ratio(P/$P_o$) less than 0.2, the ratio of $M_{max}$ over $M_{aci}$, nominal moment capacity predicted by ACI 318-02 provisions, is consistently greater than 1 with approximately a 20 percent margin of safty.
Municipalities in the United Arab Emirates approve reinforced concrete design of building structures to follow either the ACI 318 or the BS 8110 code. Since the requirements of these codes are different from each, there is a need to compare the structural demand in the two codes. The main objective of this study is to compare the design requirements of the ACI 318 code with the BS 8110 code for the flexural, shear and axial compression limit states. The load factors and load combinations in the two codes are also compared. To do so, a large number of cross-sections with different geometries, material properties, and reinforcement ratios are analyzed following the procedures in the two codes. The relevant factored load combinations in the two codes are also investigated for a wide range of live-to-dead load ratios and for various wind-to-dead load ratios. The study showed that the differences between the design capacities in the ACI 318 and BS 8110 codes are minor for flexure, moderate for axial compression, and major for shear. Furthermore, the factored load combinations for dead load, live load and wind in the two codes yield minor-to-moderate differences, depending on the live-to-dead load ratio and intensity of wind.
The lubrication characteristics of high-speed ball bearings have been investigated empirically using 45mm bore split inner ring ball bearings employed in small industrial gas turbine engines with oil-jet lubrication method. For the close structural simulation, experiments carried out with bearing mounting supports of real engines, such as bearing housings and oil nozzle assemblies with squeeze film dampers. Thus the results of tests can be directly applied to the design and the development of gas turbine engines. Testing was done by varying operating speeds, axial load on bearings, and lubricant flow rates. During testing, the temperature of bearing at outer-ring face, the power consumption of the driving motor, and the rotating resistance of the bearing were measured. From this study, the representative factors for lubrication characteristics at high speed was found, and the most important one was not operating speed but axial load up to 1.95 million dmN speed and 2969 N axial load. Furthermore, the detailed variation of the rotational resistance of the bearing could be visualized by measuring the change of the radial load under the bearing supports. The rotational resistance consists of the frictional resistance and the bearing-cavity oil resistance.

Main objective of this research is to evaluate performance of high-strength concrete (HSC) columns for ductility and strength. Eight one-third scale columns with compressive strength of 69 MPa were subjected to a constant axial load corresponding to 30 % of the column axial load capacity and a cyclic horizontal load-inducing reversed bending moment. The variables studied in this research are the volumetric ratio of transverse reinforcement (${\rho}_s=1.58$, 2.25 %), tie configuration (Type H, Type C and Type D) and tie yield strength ($f_{yh}=549$ and 779 MPa). Test results show that the flexural strength of every column exceeds the calculated flexural capacity based on the equivalent concrete stress block used in the current design code. Columns with 42 % higher amounts of transverse reinforcement than that required by seismic provisions of ACI 318-02 showed ductile behaviour, showing a displacement ductility factor (${\mu}_{{\Delta}u}$) of 3.69 to 4.85, and a curvature ductility factor (${\mu}_{{\varphi}u}$) of over 10.0. With an axial load of 30 % of the axial load capacity, it is recommended that the yield strength of transverse reinforcement be held equal to or below 549 MPa.
