Manufacture and Analysis of Hydroforming Process for an Automobile Lower Arm by FEM (유한요소법에 의한 자동차 로어암의 하이드로포밍 성형 해석 및 제작)

  • An automobile lower arm has been fabricated in a prototype form by hydroforming with the aids of numerical analysis and experiments. For the numerical process design, a program called HydroFORM-3D developed here on the basis of a rigid-plastic model, has been applied to the lower arm hydroforming. The friction calculation between die and workpiece has been dealt carefully by introducing a new scheme in three-dimensional surface integration. To accomplish successful hydroforming process design, thorough investigation on proper combination of process parameters such as internal hydraulic pressure, axial feeding, and tool geometry has been performed. Results obtained from numerical simulation for a lower arm in hydroforming process are compared with a series of experiments. The comparison shows that the numerical analysis successfully provides the manufacturing information on the lower arm hydroforming, and it predicts the geometrical deformation and the thinning.

  • Determination of loading conditions for tube hydroforming(THF) process that implies an amount of the increment in axial feeding and internal pressure for each step is one of the most important constituents at the process design level. On account of the fact that those design factors mentioned above are imposed simultaneously during the process, suitable loading conditions are required to obtain robust products without any failure such as buckling, necking, bursting and so on. In which, especially, bursting is well known as the most frequently occurred failure in general THF process. In this study, therefore, determination of the loading condition based on the adaptive method was carried out to obtain safe loading paths. In addition, forming limit curves are applied to evaluate the derived loading conditions by using the simulation results. Consequently, it is found that described method in this study for THF process design is useful and has a feasibility.

  • Recently hydroforming process became a process which is increasingly applied in the automotive industry. As the hydroforming process is a new technology, there is no abundant data to assist manufacturing the products. To investigate the effects of process parameters on the tube hydroforming process, simple bulging, circular bulging and Tee-fitting tests are performed. The optimal leading path to escape the failure modes(bursting, wrinkling) is determined and the effects of the process parameters, the internal pressure and axial feeding on the product quality, such as thickness distribution, forming height and branch dome shape are investigated.

  • Tubular hydroforming has attracted increased attention in the automotive industry recently. In this study, a professional finite element program for analysis and design of tube hydroforming processes, has been developed, called HydroFORM-3D, which is based on a rigid-plastic model. With the developed program HydroFORM-3D, the hydroforming process for an automobile lower arm is analyzed and designed. The manufacturing process for a lower arm consists of tube bending, preforming, and final hydroforming. To accomplish successful hydroforming process design, thorough investigation on proper combination of process parameters such as internal hydraulic pressure, axial feeding, and tool geometry is required. This paper describes the influences of forming conditions on the hydroforming of a lower arm by using simulation to predict strain and tube shape during bending, preforming, and final hydroforming processes.

  • In the hydroforming process the number of process can be reduced by combining pre-forming process and post-forming process such as the bending, piercing and the embedding process. Integrated studies on the embedding manufacturing technology have been performed by analyzing the deformed mode of the tubes and the optimal process parameters. In this study, a simulation model that can prove clamping force between the clamping element and tube has been investigated by FEM. The characteristics of the embedded parts, such as the shape of the screw tip, screw thread and shape of thread were investigated at various clamping element conditions.

  • The LHCP circularly polarized antenna operating at DBS band is developed by employing the sequential-rotation technique in which each subarray is comprised the three truncated-corner patch square element. Antenna designed with sequentially-related technique whose M=3, p=2 has the effect of improved axial-ratio bandwidth, cross-polarization etc. And it is proved that the degradation of radiation pattern can be reduced significantly by minimizing the radiation loss of feeding line structure. Antenna designed shows extremely low side lobe level of below - 25 dB in the diagonal plane and cross-polarization level of below -20 dB in the all plane. And these performances comply with the array antenna specification for DBS.

  • This paper demonstrates a scalp-implantable miniaturized antenna at the medical implant communication service (MICS) (402-405MHz) band. The antenna size is only $27.63mm^3$($8.5mm{\times}6.5mm{\times}0.5mm$), which is the smallest antenna for the MICS band. Miniaturization is achieved by using a symmetrical serpentine shaped radiating patch and placing open-end slots in the ground plane. In addition, co-axial feeding is used for excitation with a shorting pin connected between the radiator and ground. The antenna was simulated in a homogeneous skin model and in the human scalp. An experimental prototype of the proposed antenna was fabricated and measured in a skin-mimicking gel. Good agreement was obtained between the measurement and simulation results, showing a broad bandwidth of 49 MHz (from 395 to 444 MHz) for |S11| less than -10 dB and a maximum gain of -42.87 dBi. This gain is higher than the previous MICS antenna with respect to antenna size.

  • Tube hydroforming provides a number of advantages over conventional stamping process, including fewer secondary operation, weight reduction, assembly simplification, adaptability to forming of complex structural components and improved structural strength and stiffness. In this study, the effect of the heat treatment on the hydro-formability has been investigated. By using the mild steel tube bulging test is performed at various heat treatment conditions to evaluate the hydro-formability.

  • We introduce a new application of the genetic algorithm for design of the coaxial fed circularly polarized rectangular microstrip antenna. The GA shows excellent results for the design of the microstrip antenna which have a very complex objective function including the input impedance, the effective loss tangent and the axial ratio. The objective function is derived from the cavity model, and the size and the feeding point are optimized by the genetic algorithm. The experimental results show good agreement with the simulated results.

  • Most of automobile parts manufactured through sheet metal forming are mass-produced by using press mold. In recent years, automation and speeding up of press lines have been expanding to maximize product productivity using a press die. The proportion of the moving time in the press line is high, and therefore requires high-speed and automated equipment for the moving process. In this paper, to provide the double-moving system can be the moving time reduction and increased productivity. Developed transport system consists of the material supply, the material feeding device and the PLC controller and the devices are positioned between each of the pressing process. In this paper, the double-moving system including developed units using a multi-axial single-acting through this reduced the C/T(cycle time) and improved the productivity.
