  • In the machine tool industry, direct drive linear motor technology is of increasing interest as a means to achieve high acceleration and to increase reliability. This paper analyzes and compares the characteristics of the tubular linear actuator with the cylindrical Halbach and radial array, respectively. A tubular linear actuator with cylindrical Halbach array, consisting of parallel magnetized arc segments instead of ideal radial and axial magnetized rings, is manufactured. The magnetic field solutions due to the PMs and to the currents are established analytically in terms of vector potential, using the 2-D cylindrical coordinate system. Motor thrust, flux linkage and back emf are then derived. Thrust characteristics according to such design parameters as magnet height and air gap length are also given. The results are validated extensively by comparison with finite element analysis (FEA). Test results such as thrust measurements are also given to confirm the analysis.

  • The present work deals with the theoretical study of the effects of copper vapours resulting from the erosion of the electrodes on the properties of a SF6 arc in a Laval nozzle. Computations have been done for a DC arc of 1000A with upstream gas pressure of 3.75MPa. The arc plasma is assumed to be in local thermodynamic equilibrium(LTE). The sheath and non-equilibrium region around the electrodes are not considered in this model. However, its effects on the energy flux into the electrodes are estimated from some experimental and theoretical data. The turbulence effects are calculated using the Prandtl mixing length model. A conservation equation for the copper vapour concentration is solved together with the governing equations for mass, momentum and energy of the gas mixture. Comparisons were made between the results with and without electrodes erosion. It has been found that the presence of copper vapours cools down the arc temperature due to the combined effects of increased radiation and increased electrical conductivity. The copper vapour distribution is very sensitive to the turbulent parameter. The erosion of upstream electrode(cathode) has larger effects on the arc compared to the downstream electrode(anode) as the copper vapour eroded from the anode cannot diffuse against the high-speed axial flow.

  • This paper presents the spray characteristics of the oxidizer rich preburner injector which can be used in the high-thrust rocket system. We designed the basic shape of the liquid-liquid coaxial swirl injector for the rocket oxidizer rich preburner injection system. To understand the spray angle variation with the high pressure environment, the spray visualization in the high pressure chamber was preformed. Also we measured the droplet velocity, the Sauter Mean Diameter(SMD), the volume flux and the number density with the PDPA system by using water in atmospheric pressure. The results show that the spray angle is reduced by increasing ambient pressure and maximum droplet velocity is shown from a nozzle tip and then the droplet velocity decreases as a spray moves to the downstream. The SMD decreases on the axial distance from 20 mm to 50 mm but it increases over 50 mm. That is due to the increasing number of collision with each droplet and interaction with ambient air on going downstream direction.

  • The examinations of the operating mechanism of an oscillating capillary tube heat pipe (OCHP) using the visualization method revealed that the working fluid in the OCHP oscillated to the axial direction by the contraction and expansion of vapor plugs. The contraction and expansion were due to the formation and extinction of bubbles in the evaporating and condensing part, respectively The actual physical mechanism, whereby the heat which was transferred in such an OCHP was complex and not well understood. In this study, a theoretical model of the OCHP was developed to model the oscillating motion of working fluid in the OCHP. The differential equations of two-phase flow were applied and simultaneous non-linear partial differential equations were solved. From the analysis of the numerical results, it was found that the oscillating motion Of working fluid in the OCHP was affected by the operation and design conditions such as the heat flux, the charging ratio of working fluid and the hydraulic diameter of flow channel. The simulation results showed that the proposed model and solution could be used for estimating the operating mechanism in the OCHP.

  • This work deals with the validation of a high-fidelity multiphysics system coupling the Serpent 2 Monte Carlo neutron transport code with SUBCHANFLOW, a subchannel thermalhydraulics code, and TRANSURANUS, a fuel-performance analysis code. The results for a full-core pin-by-pin burnup calculation for the ninth operating cycle of the Temelín II VVER-1000 plant, which starts from a fresh core, are presented and assessed using experimental data. A good agreement is found comparing the critical boron concentration and a set of pin-level neutron flux profiles against measurements. In addition, the calculated axial and radial power distributions match closely the values reported by the core monitoring system. To demonstrate the modeling capabilities of the three-code coupling, pin-level neutronic, thermalhydraulic and thermomechanic results are shown as well. These studies are encompassed in the final phase of the EU Horizon 2020 McSAFE project, during which the Serpent-SUBCHANFLOW-TRANSURANUS system was developed.

  • The purpose of the present study is to develop the 3D static and noise simulator based on Galerkin Finite Element Method (GFEM) using the unstructured hexahedral elements. The 3D, 2G neutron diffusion and noise equations are discretized using the unstructured hexahedral by considering the linear approximation of the shape function in each element. The validation of the static calculation is performed via comparison between calculated results and reported data for the VVER-1000 benchmark problem. A sensitivity analysis of the calculation to the element type (unstructured hexahedral or tetrahedron elements) is done. Finally, the neutron noise calculation is performed for the neutron noise source of type of variable strength using the Green function technique. It is shown that the error reduction in the static calculation is considerable when the unstructured tetrahedron elements are replaced with the hexahedral ones. Since the neutron flux distribution and neutron multiplication factor are appeared in the neutron noise equation, the more accurate calculation of these parameters leads to obtaining the neutron noise distribution with high accuracy. The investigation of the changes of the neutron noise distribution in axial direction of the reactor core shows that the 3D neutron noise analysis is required instead of 2D.

  • The results of full-scale numerical experiments of a hybrid thorium-containing fuel cell facility operating in a close-to-critical state due to a controlled source of fusion neutrons are discussed in this work. The facility under study was a complex consisting of two blocks. The first block was based on the concept of a high-temperature gas-cooled thorium reactor core. The second block was an axially symmetrical extended plasma generator of additional neutrons that was placed in the near-axial zone of the facility blanket. The calculated models of the blanket and the plasma generator of D-T neutrons created within the work allowed for research of the neutronic parameters of the facility in stationary and pulse-periodic operation modes. This research will make it possible to construct a safe facility and investigate the properties of thorium fuel, which can be continuously used in the epithermal spectrum of the considered hybrid fusion-fission reactor.

  • The most numerical investigations of the thermal-hydraulic phenomena following the loss of the residual heat removal capability during the mid-loop operation of the pressurized water reactor were performed according to simplifications and are not sufficiently accurate. To perform more accurate and more reliable predictions of thermal-hydraulic accidents in a nuclear power plant using computational fluid dynamics codes, a more detailed methodology is needed. Modelling results identified that thermal stratification and natural convection are observed. Temperatures of lower monitoring points remain low, while temperatures of upper monitoring points increase over time. The water in the heated region, in the upper unheated region and the pipe region was well mixed due to natural convection, meanwhile, there is no natural convection in the lower unheated region. Water temperature in the pipe region increased after a certain time delay due to circulation of flow induced by natural convection in the heated and upper unheated regions. The modelling results correspond to the experimental data. The developed computational fluid dynamics methodology could be applied for modelling of two-component single/two-phase natural convection and thermal stratification phenomena during the mid-loop operation of the pressurized water reactor or other nuclear and non-nuclear installations at similar conditions.
