Flow Analysis and Flight Experiment for Optimum Height of Weather Data Sensor (기상데이터 센서의 최적 높이를 위한 유동해석 및 비행실험)

  • In recent years, drones have been used to measure aircraft flights data and weather information. Related applications include the measure for low-altitude atmospheric data, the measure for atmospheric fine dust, and the measure for air pollution. However, the mounting position of the atmospheric measurement sensor should be mounted by considering the effects of propeller flow, the EMI effects, and the changes in the weight of the drone. Among these, the upper flow of the propeller affects the wind speed and direction, so the optimal position should be selected. This study deals with the proper height of the atmospheric data measurement sensor. Through the flow analysis, we study the flow characteristics of around a drone and suggest the proper sensor mounting height.

A Study on Prevention as result of Controlled-Flight-Into-Terrain Accident - Focusing on Guam accident, Mokpo accident, Gimhae accident (Controlled-Flight-Into-Terrain 항공 사고 예방에 관한 연구 - 괌사고, 목포사고, 김해사고 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this study is leading to prevent the major causes of commercial-aviation fatalities about controlled-flight-into-terrain(CFIT) in approach-and-landing accidents. The paper of major analysis for controlled flight into terrain(CFIT) was Guam accident, Mokpo accident and Gimhae accident in commercial transport-aircraft accidents from 1993 through 2002. CFIT occurs when an airworthy aircraft under the control of the flight crew is flown unintentionally into terrain, obstacles or water, usually with no prior awareness by the crew. This type of accident can occur during most phases of flight, but CFIT is more common during the approach-and-landing phase. Ninety-five percent of the Guam accident, Mokpo accident, and Gimhae accident where weather was known involved IMC, fog, and rain. The paper believed that prevention for CFIT accident was education and training for flying crew and upgrade for equipment such as EGPWS, and need more research for professional organizations of airlines, and accomplishing precision approaches should be a high priority.

Prediction of Low Level Wind Shear Using High Resolution Numerical Weather Prediction Model at the Jeju International Airport, Korea (고해상도 수치모델을 이용한 제주국제공항 저층급변풍 예측)

  • In aviation meteorology, the low level wind shear is defined as a sudden change of head windbelow 1600 feet that can affect the departing and landing of the aircraft. Jeju International Airport is an area where low level wind shear is frequently occurred by Mt. Halla. Forecasting of such wind shear would be useful in providing early warnings to aircraft. In this study, we investigated the performance of statistical downscaling model, called Korea Meteorological Administration Post-processing (KMAP) with a 100 m resolution in forecasting wind shear by the complex terrain. The wind shear forecasts was produced by calculating the wind differences between stations aligned with the runways. Two typical wind shear cases caused by complex terrain are validated by comparing to Low Level Wind Shear Alert System (LLWAS). This has been shown to have a good performance for describing air currents caused by terrain.

  • An empirical analysis was conducted on the workload of helicopter pilots flying in high-risk flight environments such as ground obstacles and weather effects at low altitudes. To evaluate the workload, an independent sample t-test was performed using the NASA-TLX evaluation method most suitable for the aviation field, and the workload score was calculated by applying the analytical stratification method (AHP) to compare and analyze private and commercial pilots. There is a significant difference in mean between private and commercial pilots and the result of work load was obtained over 70%. This paper studied the 'surprise and startle effect' on the helicopter field for the first time. In the future, it is intended to contribute to the safe operation of helicopters by presenting a method for effective safety management by utilizing it in the field of education and training for helicopter pilots and providing basic data for preventing accidents caused by human error.

  • The operational environment of helicopters extends from the civil air traffic control system to remote and hazardous areas and from day operations under visual flight conditions to night operations in adverse weather. Helicopters can move in any direction, remain stationary while airborne, climb and descend vertically, and take off and land almost anywhere. Thus their range of maneuvers and control requirements vary more widely than do those of fixed-wing aircraft. In this study, I analyzed the job of helicopter pilot through methods of observation, and classified the required ability of them into the domain of cognitive, perceptual/spatial, psychomotor. I expect that the result of this study will be used to aid training and selection of helicopter pilot.

  • In this paper, we states the verification and validation methodology for the modular system of A-SMGCS which defined in the ICAO Manual on Advanced Surface Movement Guidance and Control Systems. Such systems aim to maintain the declared surface movement rate under all weather conditions while maintaining the required level of safety. With the complete concept of an A-SMGCS, air traffic controllers, vehicle drivers, flight crews, and are assisted with surface operations in terms of surveillance, control, routing/planning and guidance tasks. A-SMGCS verification and validation for the development of Real Time Simulation, shadow mode trials, operational trials are conducted through three methods. In this study, the characteristics and the need for such a verification method was examined.

  • Simultaneous parallel approaches in all weather conditions should be applied to manage efficiently increasing volume of air traffic flow and solve the problem of delayed arrivals. But All of the airports which have closely-spaced parallel-runways in Korea don't meet the interval-standards for IFR parallel approaches. In that regard, more accurate and safer System should be applied for the Korean airports. GNSS was adopted as an international standard of the next-generation navigation system and many studies and master plans have been activated by stages in Korea. In this paper, the current state of the domestic airports will be analyzed focusing on the interval of parallel runways and future specification of both flight operation system and air-side management will be recommended.

  • In oceanic flight routes, HF radio and satellite data links have weather restrictions, long propagation delay and low data throughput. In this paper, we propose oceanic aeronautical communications scheme in the VHF band based on ad-hoc communication. The proposed scheme organizes autonomously a multi-hop network that is divided into multiple local network using aircraft to fly long-distance communication and supports a hybrid type of multiple access, which consists of random access and TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) scheme. In addition, several algorithms to apply spatial reuse of transmission to multi-hop long range communication environments have been proposed. The proposed system proves performance improvement on delay time as an effective solution to communicate end-to-end on the oceanic flight routes and strengthens the reliability of oceanic aeronautical communication.

  • A heavy foggy event accompanying with complex coastal fog was investigated in this study. This heavy foggy event occurred on FEB 11, 2015. Due to reduced visibility with this foggy event induced more than 100times serial traffic accidents over the Young-jong highway, and Flights from 04:30 AM to 10:00 AM were cancelled on Inchon International Airport. This heavy foggy event was occurred in synoptic and mesoscale environments but dense coastal fog were combined with a combination of sea fog, steam fog, and radiation fog. This kind of coastal fog can predicted by accurate analysis of the direction of the air flow, sea surface temperature(SST), and 925hPa isotherms from numerical weather prediction charts and real time analysis charts.

Heavy Rainfall prediction using convective instability index (대류성 불안정 지수를 이용한 집중호우 예측)

  • The purpose of this study is possibility of the heavy rainfall prediction using instability index. The convective instability index using this study is Convective Available Potential Energy(CAPE) concerned the growth energy of the storm, Bulk Richardson Number(BRN) concerned the type and strength of the storm, and Sotrm Relative Helicity(SRH) concerned maintenance of the storm. To verify the instability index, the simulation of heavy rainfall case experiment by Numerical Weather Prediction(NWP) model(MM5) are designed. The results of this study summarized that the heavy rainfall related to the high instability index and the proper combination of one more instability index made the higher heavy rainfall prediction.
