A closed loop system with a linear plant and nonlinearity in the feedback connection is analyzed for its quasi-static orbital stability by a state-space approach. First a periodic orbit is assumed to exist in the loop which is determined by describing function method for the given nonlinearity. This is possible by selecting a proper nonlinearity and a rigorous justification of the describing function method.[1-3, 18, 20]. Then by introducing residual operator, a linear perturbed model can be formulated. Using various transformations like a modified eigenstructure decomposition, periodic-averaging, charge of variables and coordinate transformation, the stability of the periodic orbit, as a solution of harmonic balance, can be shown by investigating a simple scalar function and result of linear algebra. This is ...
In this paper, an efficient FFT-based fault detection algorithm is proposed. In our proposed method, fault detection is accomplished by process similar to the conventional FFT-based fault detection. However, the proposed technique adopts fast algorithms for preprocessing, where the conventional operation such as averaging is replaced with recursive average operation that outperforms the former in computational cost. And, the proposed approach utilizes the feature vector with the small dimension, which is extracted from spectral components of the lower and upper sidebands around the fundamental frequency. The mean absolute difference (MAD) criterion is used to finally determine whether motor...
A multi-scale (macro-micro) finite element framework for analysis of polycrystalline solids is suggested. The proposed frame work is strongly-coupled in a sense that the two scale calculation is performed at the same time. The issue of averaging micro-scale material stress and stiffness is addressed and a strategy is proposed. The proposed framework is implemented and applied to two examples having different geometries and loading modes. It is concluded that the proposed multi-scale framework can be used for more detailed and accurate analysis compared with the single-scale finite element analysis.
Motion can be estimated continuously from each sensor through the analysis of the instantaneous states of an object. This paper is aimed to introduce a method to estimate the general 3D motion of a planar object from the instantaneous states of an object using multi-sensor data fusion. The instantaneous states of an object is estimated using the linear feedback estimation algorithm. The motion estimated from each sensor is fused to provide more accurate and reliable information about the motion of an unknown planar object. We present a fusion algorithm which combines averaging and deciding. With the assumption that the motion is smooth, the approach can handle the data sequences from multiple sensors with different sampling times. Simulation results show proposed algorithm is advantageous in terms of accuracy, speed, and versatility.
A numerical study based on the three-dimensional Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations is presented to analyze the transonic flowfield through two-stage axial compressor. Explicit four-step Runge-Kutta scheme is used for solution algorithm, and local time step and implicit residual averaging are introduced for enhancing the convergency. Artificial dissipation model is adopted to assure the stability of solution. The solver is coupled with Baldwin-Lomax model to describe turbulence. To avoid calculating the unsteady flow, a mixing process is modeled at a station between rotating and stationary blade rows. Results show a variety of important physical phenomena. Comparison of the flowfields with and without tip clearance shows that the effect is considerable in this flowfield. Comparisons with experimental data carried out to validate the calculational results show reasonable agreements. Some remedies are also suggested to improve the revealed problems.
Cross regulation is a key technical issue of single-inductor multiple-output (SIMO) DC-DC converters. This paper investigates the cross regulation in single-inductor dual-output (SIDO) Buck converters with continuous conduction mode (CCM) operation. The expressions of the DC voltage gain, control to the output transfer function, cross regulation transfer function, cross coupled transfer function and impedance transfer function of the converter are presented by the time averaging equivalent circuit approach. A small signal model of a SIDO CCM Buck converter is built to analyze this cross regulation. The laws of cross regulation with respect to various load conditions are investigated. Simulation and experiment results verify the theoretical analysis. This study will be helpful for converter design to reduce the cross regulation. In addition, a control strategy to reduce cross regulation is performed.
The amount of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions has been increasing steadily over the last 4 years, averaging 6.8 percent a year, due to the growth of low cost carriers and the increased demand for air transportations. For the aviation GHG reduction, various fuel saving activities are implemented in many areas such as high-efficiency aircraft and bio-fuel development in the technical part and low carbon flight procedures, short cut route development in the operational approach. Among the various reduction technologies, we focused on low carbon flight procedures that are crucial to GHG reduciton and suggested a reduction effect according to target implementation rate using by fuel saving estimation data in each aircraft type.

In this letter, we analyze the error performance of a mobile communication system with microdiversity and macrodiversity reception in gamma-shadowed Rician fading channels for a binary differential phase-shift keying modulation scheme. Analytical expressions for the probability density function (PDF) and moment-generating function (MGF) are derived. The average bit error probability can be calculated by averaging the conditional bit error probability over the PDF or using the MGF-based approach. Numerical results are graphically presented to show the effects of macrodiversity, correlation, number of diversity branches, and severity of both fading and shadowing.
To mitigate the damaging impacts of floods, accurate prediction of runoff, streamflow and flood inundation is needed. Conventional approach of simulating hydrology and hydraulics using loosely coupled models cannot capture the complex dynamics of surface and sub-surface processes. Additionally, the scarcity of data in ungauged basins and quality of data in gauged basins add uncertainty to model predictions, which need to be quantified. In this presentation, first the role of integrated modeling on creating accurate flood simulations and inundation maps will be presented with specific focus on urban environments. Next, the use of machine learning in producing streamflow predictions will be presented with specific focus on incorporating covariate shift and the application of theory guided machine learning. Finally, a framework to quantify the uncertainty in flood models using Hierarchical Bayesian Modeling Averaging will be presented. Overall, this presentation will highlight that creating accurate information on flood magnitude and extent requires innovation and advancement in different aspects related to hydrologic predictions.
A probabilistic micromechanical framework is proposed to quantify numerically the self-healing capabilities of polymers containing microcapsules. A two-step self-healing process is designed in this study: A probabilistic micromechanical framework based on the ensemble volume-averaging method is derived for the polymers, and a hitting probability model combined with a crack nucleation model is then utilized for encountering microcapsules and microcracks. Using this framework, a series of parametric investigations are performed to examine the influence of various model parameters (e.g., the volume fraction of microcapsules, microcapsule radius, radius ratio of microcracks to microcapsules, microcrack aspect ratio, and scale parameter) on the self-healing capabilities of the polymers. The proposed framework is also implemented into a finite element code to solve the self-healing behavior of tapered double cantilever beam specimens.
