Purpose: This study was to identify the degree of health-promoting behavior and quality of life and the factors influencing quality of life of solitary elderly in rural areas. Method: The subjects of this study were 202 solitary elderly, and 65-89, who had been living in four rural areas. Data was collected through 4 questionnaires from July 10th, 2003 to August 30th, 2003. The collected data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan's multiple-range test, Pearson correlation coefficient and Stepwise multiple regression with SPSS/PC. Results: The average item score for the health-promoting behavior was 2.43; the highest score on the subscale was self-actualization (M=2.58) with the lowest being exercise (M=2.05). 2) The average item score for the quality of life was 2.81; the highest score on the subscale was neighbor relationships (M=3.27) with the lowest being economic conditions (M=2.24). There were significant differences in the health-promoting behavior by educational level and leisure-activity, in the quality of life by age and religion. Quality of life scores correlated negatively with depression scores (r=-.063, p=.000) and positively with health-promoting behavior (r=.144, p=.000), social support scores (r=.383, p=.000). Stepwise multiple regression analysis for quality of life revealed that the most powerful predictor was health-promoting behavior. Health-promoting behavior, social support, depression and age explained 51.8% of the variance. Conclusion: These results suggested that elderly people in rural areas with high degree of quality of life are likely to be high in health-promoting behavior and social support and low in depression. Therefore, it is necessary to develop health promotion programs in due consideration of health-promoting behavior and social support and depression in order to enhance the quality of life of solitary elderly in rural areas.
This study was done to investigate of instrumental activities of daily living(IADL) and quality of life and their relationships between the elderly. Data were collected from 150 elderly home residents. The data were collected from December 1st to December 20th, 2000. Structured questionnaires developed by Lawton & Brody and by Ro were adopted to measure IADL and Quality of life. Data were analyzed for percentage, means, t-test, ANOVA and Parson correlation coefficients using the SPSS program. The results were as follows: 1. The average score of the level of IADL was $20.68{\pm}2.98$ ($M{\pm}SD$) with a range of 7-26. 2. The average score of the level of Quality of life was 2. $96{\pm}0.25$ ($M{\pm}SD$). In the average score of each lower area, highest score was 3.22 for neighbor relationship and family relationship and then 3.00 for self-esteem, 2.95 for economic status, 2.86 for emotional status, and 2.85, lowest score, for physical condition and function. 3. Comparing IADL and Quality of life with general characteristics, IADL showed that there were significant difference in age(t=2.927, p=0.036) and separated children contact frequency(t=2.482, p=0.046), while Quality of life showed that there were significant difference in spouse existence(t=2.334, p=0.021), religion(t=4.089, p=0.008), family style(t=3.285, p=0.040), children number living together(t=5.332, p=0.006), communication with separated children frequency(t=4.129, p=0.003), and separated children contact frequency(t=3.908, p=0.005). 4. There was also significant positive correlation between IADL and Quality of life. The above results show that neighbor relationship and family relationship which have greatly an influence on IADL and Quality of life are very important. The elderly should be helped to satisfy their basic desire and show their potential living together with the younger generation interdependently without being isolated from family and society. Therefore, the nursing strategy that enhance IADL and Quality of life are needed and the nursing strategy that can improve IADL and Quality of life of Elderly Home Residents should be developed.

This study is to observe species identification and early life history of Korean endemic species of Tanakia latimarginata and to use it as a basis for taxonomic studies. As a result of morphological identification, a dark band appeared at the margin of the anal fin, and the ovipositor color of the female was light orange. The shape of the egg was fusiform and sticky. The egg size (long${\times}$short diameter) averaged $4.41{\times}1.44mm$. The incubation time was 126 hours after the fertilization at an average water temperature of $21.0^{\circ}C$. Immediately after hatching, the larvae had egg yolk at an average total length of $5.91{\pm}0.18mm$ (n=5). At 18 days after hatching, the trunk fur was developed in the caudal fin with an average total length of $8.02{\pm}0.08mm$ (n=5). At 41 days after hatching, the larvae absorbed egg yolk at an average total length of $8.70{\pm}0.23mm$ (n=5). At 80 days after hatching, the average length of the fins was $12.6{\pm}0.28mm$ (n=5). The number of fin of the dorsal fin was iii.8, the anal fin iii.9~10, the caudal fin 19, lateral line scales 32~35 were similar to their brood stork.
This study was carried out to obtain the optimum cultivation conditions of wild ornamental plant resources, Dicentra spectabilis L. The altitude of the habitat was ranged from 630m to 690m in Mt. Gujeol. Most of the habitat faced toward the northeast aspect and the gradient was ranged from 25 to 33 degrees. The light intensity of Dicentra community was 14,000lux on the average, and it was tendency to decrease by foliation of other woody plants. The appearance number of Dicentra per quadrat was 30 individuals on the average, and total appearance species in all quadrat surveyed was 52 taxa. Among them, Quercus mongolica, Lindera obtusiloba, Corylus heterophylla, Cornus controversa, woody plants, Corydalis speciosa, Pseudostellaria heterophylla, Artemisia keiskeana, Dryopteris crassirhizoma, Arisaema amurense var. serratum, Carex siroumensis, and Chloranthus japonicus, herbaceous plants, were showed as dominant species. Soil acidity in the habitat was 5.15 to 5.96, and average content of soil moisture was 32.6%. The contents of average organic matter, $P_2O_5$, K, Ca, and Mg were 1.99%, 14mg/kg, 0.55me/100g, 15.2me/100g, and 3.3me/100g, respectively. Electron conductivity was ranged from 0.50 to 0.76dS/m. Also, the average air temperature of May and June was 14.2$^{\circ}C$ and 19.4$^{\circ}C$, respectively.
The complete life cycle of Echinostoma hertense has been maintained in the laboratory, using Lymnaea persia snails and Rana nigromaculata tadpoles as the first and second intermediate hosts. ICR mice was used as the definitive host. Within the egg of 5. hotense, the miracidium was fully matured in 13 days of incubation at $29~30^{\circ}C$. The miracidium was $93.8{\times}53.6{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$ in average size, covered with numerous cilia of $7~11{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$ length. The epidermal plates were arranged in 6-8-4-2 formula. The first generation rediae ($1.19{\times}0.27{\;}mm$ in average size) were observed in 14 days after miracidial challenge to the snails, and the second generation rediae ($1.40{\times}0.26{\;}mm$ in average size) in 30 days. The average sixte of the cercaria was $295.5{\times}145.0{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$. Their head crown was poorly developed, and collar spines were not yet observed. After a cercarial challenge to the tadpoles, all of the tadpoles became infected and the average worm recovery rate was 88.5%. The majority of the metacercariae (75.5%) were recovered from the muscle of the tadpole's posterior body and the rest (24.3%) from their gills. The metacercariae from the tadpoles were elliptical, and $167.7{\times}129.9{\;}{\mu\textrm{m}}$ in average size. The recovery rate of adults from the mice was difFerent by the age of the metacercariae grown in the tadpoles. The metacercariae younger than 5 hrs could not infect mice whereas those older than 6 hrs could infect mice. The recovery rate became higher as the metacercaria matured, with the peak recovery rate of 90.0 % at the metacercarial age of 9 days. Thereafter the recovery rate decreased to 55.0% at the age of 50 days. As shown by the above results, the whole life cycle of E. hcrtense has been completed in the laboratory. At least 55~58 days were required to maintain one egg-to-egg cycle of E. hortense.
Purpose: This study was to identify the relationships among the depression, social support and quality of life of the elderly in rural areas. Method: The subjects of this study were 199 people aged over 60 who had been living in three rural area. Data were collected through a questionnaire survey from the 10th of July to the 10th of August 2003. Collected data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA. Duncan's multiple-range test, Pearson's correlation coefficient and multiple stepwise regression with SPSS & SAS. Result: The average depression score was 11.09. As for the score of social support by supporter, the score of spouse' support was 13.36 out of 18 points, children's support 13.27, friends' support 11.40, neighbors' support 10.21 and siblings' support 10.20. The average score of quality of life was 132.26 out of 220 points. As for the score of the sub-areas of quality of life, the score was highest in economic status(32.18) and lowest in neighbor relationship (16.42). The score of quality of life was negatively correlated with the score of depression (r=-.014) and positively with the score of social support (r=.338). The suitable regression from the results of the multiple regression analysis to investigate factors influencing quality of life was expressed by y=58.341-$0.361x_1$+$1.492x_2$ ($x_1$: social support, $x_2$: depression) and $R^2$=.327. Conclusion: These results suggest that elderly people in rural areas with high quality of life is likely to be low in depression and high in social support. Therefore, it is necessary to develop health promotion programs in due consideration of depression and social support in order to enhance the quality of life of elderly people in rural areas.

This study was done to describe the health promoting behavior and the quality of life among climacteric women and to identify the factors affecting the performance in health promoting behavior and the level of quality of life among climacteric women. The subjects of this study were 171 women(40 to 60 years old). The sample data were collected using a convenient sampling method, collected from August 10th to September 20th, 2000. The instruments for this study were the health promoting behavior scale(Park, 1995), the quality of life scale(No, 1988). Frequency, percentage, t-test, ANOVA, Pearson's correlation with SPSS program were used to analyze the data. The results of the study were as follows; 1) The average score of the performance in the health-promoting behavior variables was 2.594. The variable with the highest degree of performance was the sanitary environment, whereas the one with the lowest degree was the professional health maintenance. 2) The average score of the level in the quality of life variables was 3.069. The variable with the highest degree was the relationship with neighbor, whereas the one with lowest degree was the economic life factor. 3) Performance in the health- promoting behavior was positively related to the level in the quality of life(r=0.54, P=0.001). 4) A significant difference was demonstrated between educational level, income, perceived health status and health-promoting behavior. 5) A significant difference was demonstrated between perceived health status and quality of life.
The cereal grain crops have strong flexibility against adverse environment and they have various functional compounds. The objective of the present study was to screen phenolic compounds in sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench], foxtail millet (Setaria italica), common millet (Panicum miliaceum L.) by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with photodiode array (PDA) detector. Sorghum contained the highest amount of phenolic compounds among three different crops (sorghum, foxtail millet, common millet). Especially Moktaksusu showed the highest amount of phenolic compounds concentrations and biggest regional differences. The comparison of average phenolic compounds in sorghums by regions showed order to Milyang ($963.3\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Yeongyang ($923.1\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Gijang ($831.3\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) and Bonghwa ($735.6\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$). Among the sorghum cultivars, Moktaksusu ($1407.9\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) had the highest concentration of phenolic compounds. The average phenolic compounds of foxtail millets showed similar amount among Milyang ($319.0\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Gijang ($288.1\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) and Bonghwa ($281.9\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) areas. The phenolic compounds of Yeongyang ($246.6\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) slightly low and that showed similar concentrations among three different regions. The concentration of phenolic compounds in foxtail millets, Chungchajo ($335.6\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) showed the highest concentrations. The average phenolic compounds of common millets showed the highest concentrations in Milyang ($305.5\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Bonghwa ($262.0\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Gijang ($195.1\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Yeongyang ($237.2\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) in decreasing order. The concentration of phenolic compounds of common millets was the highest in the Norangchalgijang ($337.0\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$), Hwanggumgijang ($250.0\;{\mu}g{\cdot}g^{-1}$) was also relatively higher than others. The results of this study will provide basic information for breeding sorghums, foxtail millets and common millets with higher phenolic compound concentrations.

Physical and chemical analyses of water discharged from 4 crowded farms (Sungsan, Pyosun, Wimi and Daejung) in Jeju island were performed from July, 2006 to Dec, 2006, and the result of the analyses showed that hydrogen ion concentrations (pH) for water discharged from Sungsan farm was 7.74, Pyosun was 7.68, Wimi was 7.68 and Daejung was 7.7. Salinity levels for Sungsan, Pyosun and Wimi had an average of 31$\sim$33 $^\circ$/$_\circ$$_\circ$ indicating characteristics of far distance areas, whereas that of Daejung was 28.81 %, which was far lower compared to regular sea water salinity. As the result of measuring dissolved oxygen (DO) for each area, each area showed first graded DO for each discharged water based on water quality level for each sea district. The result of measuring the temperature for discharged water showed that water temperatures for summer were 23$\sim$25$^\circ$C, and those for winter were 16$\sim$ 18$^\circ$C. Nitrogen concentrations for discharged water exceeded each sea area's water quality level in all farms. In the case of phosphate, its average value was 0.48 mg/l for Sungsan, 0.55 mg/I for Pyosun, 0.66 mg/I for Wimi, and 0.44 mg/l for Daejung, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) was shown to be 1.5 mg/l 1.8 mg/I, 1.6 mg/I and 2.3 mg/I for Sungsan, Pyosun, Wimi and Daejung respectively. For suspended solids (SS), the average concentration was 19.3 mg/I, 21.2 mg/I, 21.3 mg/I and 18.5 mg/I for Sungsan, Pyosun, Wimi and Daejung respectively. The results of physical and chemical analyses for discharged water in farms based on time showed that almost all items were shown to increase in the forenoon and decrease, overall, in the afternoon.
