To evaluate lubrication properties by surface roughness under boundary and mixed lubrication, a new approach is suggested by both asperity flow and contact with stochastic characteristics. Many researchers already have studied the effect of surface roughness on flow. But, it has become important to research of the phenomenon of asperities contact in surfaces because the growth of asperities contact area under heavy load conditions. In this paper, flow factors in the average flow model derived by Patir and Cheng were used, and a multi-asperity contact model was included to calculate lubrication properties of a surface with a randomly generated rough surface. A numerical analysis using the average Reynolds equation with both the average flow model and the asperity contact model was conducted, and the results were compared with those from previous research. The results showed that the influence of asperities on lubrication and the friction coefficient changed rapidly on application of contact model.
The purpose of this study is to estimate the low-flow statistics at the mountainous watershed. The formulation for the estimation of the design low-flow statistics was obtained by means of a hydraulic approach applied to a simple conceptual model for a mountainous watershed. Three of the independent variables associated with the low-flow statistics is watershed area(A), average basin slope(S) and the base flow recession constant(K); Watershed area was measured from topographic maps and average basin slope is approximated in this study using Strahler's slope determining method. And base flow recession constant computed using Vogel and Kroll's method. Unfortunately, this method is usually unavailable at ungaged sites. In this study, recession constant at ungaged sites is estimated using graphical regression method used by Giese and Mason. The model for estimating low-flow statistics were applied to all 61 catchments in the Sumjin, Mankyung basin.
PURPOSES : Two-lane highways have one lane in each direction, and lane changing and passing maneuvers take place in the opposing lane depending on the availability of passing sight distance. 2001 Korea Highway Capacity Manual (KHCM) is classified into two classes of two-lane highways (Type I, II), and average travel speed and time-delayed rate are used as measures of effectiveness (MOEs). However, since existing two-lane highways have both uninterrupted and interrupted traffic flow-system elements, a variety of free-flow speeds exhibits in two-lane highways. In addition, it is necessary to check if the linear-relationship between volumes and time-delayed rate is appropriate. Then, this study is to reestablish the relationship between average travel speed, time-delayed rate, and flow. METHODS : TWOPAS model was selected to conduct this study, and the free-flow speeds of passenger cars and the percentage of following vehicles observed in two-lane highways were applied to the model as the input. The revised relationships were developed from the computer simulation. RESULTS : In the revised average travel speed vs. flow relationship, the free-flow speed of 90km/h and 70km/h were added. It shows that the relationship between time delayed-rate and flow appeared to be appropriate with the log-function form and that there was no difference in time-delayed rate between the free flow speeds. In addition to revise the relationships, the speed prediction model and the time-delayed rate prediction model were also developed. CONCLUSIONS : The revised relationships between average travel speed, time-delayed rate, and flow would be useful in estimating the Level of Service(LOS) of a two-lane highway.
We present a three-dimensional average flow model considering elastic deformation of pad asperities for chemical mechanical planarization. To consider the contact deformation of pad asperities in the calculation of the flow factor, three-dimensional contact analysis of a semi-infinite solid based on the use of influence functions is conducted from computer generated three dimensional roughness data. The average Reynolds equation and the boundary condition of both force and momentum balance are used to investigate the effect of pad roughness and external pressure conditions on film thickness and wafer position angle.
In this paper, we investigate a traffic flow modeled by stochastic Petri nets. The model consists of two parts : the traffic flow model and signal controller model. These models are used for analyzing the flow of the traffic intersection. The results of the evaluation are derived from a Petri Net-based simulation package, Greatspn. Through simulation we compare the performances of the pretimed signal controller with those of the trafic-adaptive signal controller.
When a slow-moving vehicle occupies one of the lanes of a multi-lane highway, it often causes queuing behind, unlike one is caused by an actual stoppage on that lane. This happens when the traffic flow rate upstream from the slow vehicle exceeds a certain critical value. This phenomena is called as the Moving Bottleneck, defined by Gazis and Herman (1992), Newell (1998) [3], and Munoz and Daganzo (2002), who conducted the flow estimates of upstream and downstream and considered slow-moving vehicle speed and the flow ratio exceeding slow vehicle and the microscopic traffic flow characteristics of moving bottleneck. But, a study of delay on moving bottleneck was not conducted until now. So this study provides a average delay time model related to upstream flow and the speed of slow vehicle. We have chosen the two-lane highway and homogeneous traffic flow. A slow-moving vehicle occupies one of the two lanes. Average delay time value is a result of AIMSUN[9], the microscopic traffic flow simulator. We developed a multiple regression model based on that value. Average delay time has a high value when the speed of slow vehicle is decreased and traffic flow is increased. Conclusively, the model is formulated by the negative exponential function.
In this paper, a priority schedling and a flow control algorithm with hysteresis effect are proposed for high-speed networks. A mathematical model for the flow control is proposed and a cell transition probability from this model is found. And the performance of the proposed algorithm is analyzed by a computer simulation. According to the simulation results, it can be shown that the priority scheduling and the flow control with hysteresis effect get the cell loss probability 0.061 better and the average delay 100ms better and the average delay 100ms beter than those of single threshold.
This paper presents a three dimensional shape optimization procedure for a low-speed axial flow fan blade with a weighted average surrogate model. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with shear stress transport turbulence model are discretized by finite volume approximations. Six variables from airfoil profile and lean are selected as design variables. 3D RANS solver is used to evaluate the objective functions of total pressure efficiency. Surrogate approximation models for optimization have been employed to find the optimal design of fan blade. A search algorithm is used to find the optimal design in the design space from the constructed surrogate models for the objective function. The total pressure efficiency is increased by 0.31% with the weighted average surrogate model.
The current design equations for predicting the torsional capacity of RC members underestimate the torsional strength of under-reinforced members and overestimate the torsional strength of over-reinforced members. This is because the design equations consider only the yield strength of torsional reinforcement and the cross-sectional properties of members in determining the torsional capacity. This paper presents an analytical model to predict the thickness of shear flow path in RC beams subjected to pure torsion. The analytical model assumes that torsional reinforcement resists torsional moment with a sufficient deformation capacity until concrete fails by crushing. The ACI 318 code is modified by applying analytical results from the proposed model such as the average stress of torsional reinforcement and the effective gross area enclosed by the shear flow path. Comparison of the calculated and observed torsional strengths of existing 129 test beams showed good agreement. Two design variables related to the compressive strength of concrete in the proposed model are approximated for design application. The accuracy of the ACI 318 code for the over-reinforced test beams improved somewhat with the use of the approximations for the average stresses of reinforcements and the effective gross area enclosed by the shear flow path.
Two surfaces that have relative motion show different characteristics according to surface roughness or surface patterns in all lubrication areas. For two rough surfaces with mixed lubrication, this paper proposes a new approach that includes the contact characteristics of the surfaces and a probabilistic method for a numerical analysis of lubrication. As the contact area of the two surfaces changes according to the loading conditions, asperity contact is very important. An average flow model developed by Patir-Cheng is central to the study of lubrication for rough surfaces. This average flow model also refers to a multi-asperity contact model for deriving a modified Reynolds equation and calculating the lubricant characteristics of a bearing surface with random roughness during fluid flow. Based on the average flow model, this paper carried out a numerical analysis of lubrication using a contact model by considering a load change made by the actual contact of asperities between two surfaces. Lubrication properties show different characteristics according to the surface patterns. This study modeled various geometric surface patterns and calculated the characteristics of lubrication.
