Background: The sprouts of oak species play an important role in maintaining the oak community in a disturbed environment. In this study, we cut 1-year-old oak in three times during the 3 years and measured the sprout responses to know sprouting ability of six deciduous oaks in Korea. Results: Oak sprouts have appeared in spring and fall, and some of the sprouts had lifespan as short as a month. As the number of cutting increases, sprout number of Quercus acutissima increased whereas the other oak species decreased or died. The average number of sprouts over the 3 years was from 1.4 (Quercus mongolica) to 2.2 (Q. acutissima) per individual. Quercus serrata died after the second cutting, and Quercus dentata died after the third cutting. So, the two species have the lowest sprouting ability among six oak species. The sprouts grew actively during fall and slowly in summer. The sprout length during the 3 years was in the following descending order: Q. acutissima, Quercus aliena, Q. dentata, and Q. mongolica. Sprout of Q. acutissima and Q. aliena generated steadily over the 3 years, and sprout of Quercus variabilis and Q. mongolica was changed by year. After the 3 years, the number of sprouts increased only in Q. acutissima but sprout number of the other five oak species decreased. The sprout length of Q. acutissima, Q. aliena, and Q. variabilis increased, but sprout length of the other three oak species decreased. The average survival rate of saplings over the 3 years was in the following descending order: Q. acutissima, Q. aliena, Q. variabilis, and Q. mongolica. Conclusions: As a result, the sprouting ability of Q. acutissima was the highest. Such level of sprouting ability may be the evidence of how Q. acutissima community exists as a dominant species in a disturbed environment in lowlands of Korea peninsula.

Predicting cutting forces in machine tools is essential to productivity improvement and process control in the manufacturing field. Furthermore, milling machining is more complicated than turning machining. Therefore, several studies have been conducted previously to simulate milling forces; this study aims to simulate the cutting forces in milling machines using multi-layered neural networks. In the experiments, the number of layers in these networks was 3 and 4 and the number of neurons in the hidden layers was varied from 20 to 200. The root mean square errors of simulated cutting force components were obtained from taught and untaught data for the various neural networks. Results show that the error trends for untaught data were non-uniform because of the complex nature of the cutting force components, which was caused by different cutting factors and nonlinear characteristics coming into play. However, trends for taught data showed a very good coincidence.

The recalcitrant hairs which are accumulated in the U-trap equipped to prevent the stench from the drainage produce the phenomenon of blocking the flow of water through the home drainage pathway. The chemical dissolution solutions commercially manufactured are excessively poured into U-trap to solve this blocking problem. In this study, the specially designed instrument was developed for the experiments to cut and crush the hairs of which main component are the recalcitrant keratin proteins. The performance of the instrument for cutting and crushing hairs was investigated using experimental methods. The cutting and weighing method was used in order to obtain the average length of a large amount of hairs cut by instrument. This method is relatively simple to measure the weight of cutting hairs to obtain the average length of the fibers, the values of average length showed not greater tolerances. Also the average cutting number was defined to evaluate the performance of the cutting and crushing instruments designed for this study. We were able to apply these evaluation methods to provide the criteria to obtain the optimal structure of instrument and proper operation time in the given experimental conditions. These experimental methods and results will provide the good example to design and to analyze the various device that can be used for cutting the fibers. The cutting and crushing instrument developed in this study showed the effective abilities to cutting the hairs. The general using the cuttting and crushing instrument at every home would be helpful to prevent water environmental pollution.

In order to regulate cutting torque in milling, monitoring system should be set to a certain threshold. Radial immersion ratio is an important factor to determine the threshold and should be estimated in process for automatic regulation. In this paper, on-line estimation of the radial immersion ration using spindle motor current in face milling is presented. When a tooth finishes sweeping, a sudden drop of cutting torque occurs. This torque drop is equal to cutting torque acting on a single tooth at the swept angle of cut and can be acquired form cutting torque signals. Average cutting torque per revolution can also be calculate form cutting torque signals. The ratio of cutting torque acting on a single tooth at the swept angle of cut to the average cutting torque per revolution is a function of the swept angle of cut and the number of teeth. Using the magnitude of this ratio, the radial immersion ratio is estimated. Identical algorithm is adopted to estimate the immersion ratio based on the spindle motor current measurement. The experiments performed under different cutting conditions show that the radial immersion ratio can be estimated within 10% error range by the proposed method using spindle motor current.

To protect the surface of ground-cutting slopes and ground-raised slopes and to recover environment-friendly slopes at the national road expansion construction between Gamchon and Yaechon, test-construction work was done using several modes of hydro-seeding measures to select a suitable construction method through the field survey; the results were as follows : As a result of survey on physio-chemical characteristics of soil, the average soil inclination on ground-raised slopes was from 4.73 mm to 5.37 mm; the average soil acidity was from pH 6.47 to 6.73; the average soil humidity was within the scope of 0.57~1.70 %,; the average soil inclination on ground-cutting slopes was 9.17~10.43mm; the average soil acidity was pH 6.67~6.77 and the average soil humidity was within the scope of 0.53~1.27 %; considered overall, they showed generally satisfactory base materials for plant breeding. As a result of the number of sprouting individuals, the average sprouting number of individuals on test spots executed by Coir net with Seed spray construction methods and the average number of sprouting individuals on other test spots executed by furrow-digging with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures were 1,172 number of per square meter and 970 number of per square meter respectively; thus they showed higher numerical value comparing with other test spots. Likewise, the average number of sprouting individuals on test spots of the ground-cutting slopes executed by Coir net with Seed spray method and the average number of sprouting individuals on other test spot executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures were found to be 1,107 number of per square meter and 1,105 number of per square meter respectively, whose numerical value showed rather higher other test spots. As a result of a survey on living plants' breeding index [dried weight], the weight in dried state on test spots executed by Coir net with Seed spray method and other test spots executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures on both ground-raised and ground-cutting slopes was found to be higher and showed similar characteristics statistically. As a result of survey on the surface-covering degree of ground-raised slopes, nine weeks after test construction, test spots executed by Coir net with Seed spray method and other test spots executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures showed commonly more than 70% of surface-covering degree, but other test spots showed only below 35% of surface covering degree; especially in case of test spots by Verdvol seed spray measures, they showed 10% of the lowest surface-covering. Surface-covering degree on the test spot of ground-cutting slopes nine weeks after test construction showed more than 75% both executed by Coir net with Seed spray construction method and executed by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures. As a result of survey on appearing plants on the test spots, there dominates Eragrostis curvula both on ground-raised slopes and on ground-cutting slopes with other seeding plant life's lower breeding and there appear intruders, such as Setaria viridis Beauv, Digitaria sanguinalis Scop, and Chenopodium album var.centrorubrum Makino. As for water-borne excavation and soil's washing-away on the slopes, there happened less washing-away and water-borne excavation with good breeding of plant life on test spots executed both by Coir net with Seed spray construction method and by furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures, but there happened much more soil's washing-away along with water-home excavation at the test spot executed by Seed spray with measures. After the research results of test construction sites are examined overall, it's presumed that furrow-digger with Seed spray and Straw mat-mulching measures [interval between lines is 40cm, 5cm in depth] will be preferred to prevent erosion and water-home excavation of slopes located within the construction sites.

In this work a dynamic cutting force model in ball end milling of inclined surface is introduced. To represent the complex cutting geometry in ball end milling of inclined surface, workpiece is modeled with Z-map method and cutting edges are divided into finite cutting edge elements. As tool rotates and vibrates, a finite cutting edge element makes two triangular sub-patches. Using the number of nodes in workpiece which are in the interior of sub-patches, instant average uncut chip thickness is derived. Instant dynamic cutting forces are computed with the chip thickness and cutting coefficients. The deformation of cutting tool induced by cutting farces is also computed. With iterative computation of these procedures, a dynamic cutting force model is generated. The model is verified with several experiments.
In a high precision vertical machining center, the estimation of cutting forces is important for many reasons such as prediction of chatter vibration, surface roughness and so on. The cutting forces are difficult to predict because they are very complex and time variant. In order to predict the cutting forces of end-milling processes for various cutting conditions, their mathematical model is important and the model is based on chip load, cutting geometry, and the relationship between cutting forces and chip loads. Specific cutting force coefficients of the model have been obtained as interpolation function types by averaging forces of cutting tests. In this paper the coefficients are obtained by neural network and the results of the conventional method and those of the proposed method are compared. The results show that the neural network method gives more correct values than the function type and that in the learning stage as the omitted number of experimental data increase the average errors increase as well.

Selection of optimal cutting conditions is important for improving productivity and implementing efficient process control in metal machining. In this study, improvement of cutting conditions in machining using end-mills is studied by using deep-layered neural networks, which comprise an input layer, output layer, and two hidden layers. System networks are designed with inputs as cutting conditions, and they output the cutting force. A pseudo-inverse network is designed that has the adjustable cutting condition as output and cutting force and other cutting conditions as input. The combination of the system network and pseudo-inverse network enables selection or improvement of cutting conditions that results in the expected cutting force.

A method using cutting force signal and neural network for detection tool damage is proposed. Cutting force signal is gained by tool dynamometer and the signal is prepocessed to normalize. Cutting force signal is changed by tool state. When tool damage is occurred, cutting force signal goes up in comparison with that in normal state. However,the signal goes down in case of catastrophic fracture. These features are memorized in neural network through nomalizing couse. A new nomalizing method is introduced in this paper. Fist, cutting forces are sumed up except data smaller than threshold value, which is the cutting force during non-cutting action. After then, the average value is found by dividing by the number of data. With backpropagation training process, the neural network memorizes the feature difference of cutting force signal between with and without tool damage. As a result, the cutting force can be used in monitoring the condition of cutting tool and neural network can be used to classify the cutting force signal with and without tool damage.
