  • Light detection and ranging (LiDAR), a widely used sensor in mobile robots and autonomous vehicles, has its most important function as measuring the range of objects in three-dimensional space and generating point clouds. These point clouds consist of the coordinates of each reflection point and can be used for various tasks, such as obstacle detection and environment recognition. However, several processing steps are required, such as three-dimensional modeling, mesh generation, and rendering. Efficient data processing is crucial because LiDAR provides a large number of real-time measurements with high sampling frequencies. Despite the rapid development of controller computational power, simplifying the computational algorithm is still necessary. This paper presents a method for estimating the presence of curbs, humps, and ground tilt using range measurements from a single horizontal or vertical scan instead of point clouds. These features can be obtained by data segmentation based on linearization. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm was verified by experiments in various environments.

  • This paper describes hierarchical semantic map building using the classified area information in home environments. The hierarchical semantic map consists of a grid, CAIG (Classified Area Information in Grid), and topological map. The grid and CAIG maps are used for navigation and motion selection, respectively. The topological map provides the intuitive information on the environment, which can be used for the communication between robots and users. The proposed semantic map building algorithm can greatly improve the capabilities of a mobile robot in various domains, including localization, path-planning and HRI (Human-Robot Interaction). In the home environment, a door can be used to divide an area into various sections, such as a room, a kitchen, and so on. Therefore, we used not only the grid map of the home environment, but also the door information as a main clue to classify the area and to build the hierarchical semantic map. The proposed method was verified through various experiments and it was found that the algorithm guarantees autonomous map building in the home environment.

  • Ultrasonic sensors are widely used in mobile robot applications to recognize external environments by virtue that they are cheap, easy to use, and robust under varying lighting conditions. In most cases, a single ultrasonic sensor is used to measure the distance to an object based on time-of-flight (TOF) information, whereas multiple sensors are used to recognize the shape of an object, such as a comer, plane, or edge. However, the conventional sequential driving technique involves a long measurement time. This problem can be resolved by pulse coding of ultrasonic signals, which allows multi-sensors to be emitted simultaneously and adjacent objects to be distinguished. Accordingly, this paper presents a new simultaneous coded driving system for an ultrasonic sensor array for object recognition in autonomous mobile robots. The proposed system is designed and implemented. A micro-controller unit is implemented using a DSP, Polaroid 6500 ranging modules are modified for firing the coded signals, and a 5-channel coded signal generating board is made using a FPGA. To verify the proposed method, experiments were conducted in an environment with overlapping signals, and the flight distances fur each sensor were obtained from the received overlapping signals using correlations and conversion to a bipolar PCM-NRZ signal.

  • This paper deals with the method of using the amended virtual force field technique to avoidance the front environment(wall, obstacles etc.) in navigating by using the environmental informations recognized by a ultrasonic-ring and pan/tilt CCD camera equipped on a mobile robot. we will give an explanation for the robot system architecture designed and implemented in this study and a short review of existing techniques, since there exist several recent thorough books and review paper on this paper. It is proposed the rusult from the experimental run based on a virtual force field(VFF) method to support the validity of the aforementioned architecture of mobile service robot for local navigation and obstacle avoidance for autonomous mobile robots. We will conclude by discussing some possible future extensions of the project. The results show that the proposed algorithm is apt to identify obstacles in an indoor environments to guide the robot to the goal location safely.

  • This paper proposes a new solution about physical problem of autonomous mobile robots system using ultrasonic sensors. An mobile robot uses several sensors for recognition of its circumstance. However, such sensor data are not accurate all the time. A means of removing the noise that sensor data contains constantly, It is possible for simulation to estimate its circumstance based on ultrasonic sensor data by learning algorithm SVR(Support Vector Regression). To use SVR, it is being selected parameter and kernel which are the component of SVR. Selecting the component of SVR, the most accurate parameter data was selected through the tests because it is not existed determined data. In addition, choosing the kernel uses RBF(Radial Basis Function) kernel which is the most generalized. This paper proposes SVR based algorithm to compensate for the above demerits of ultrasonic sensor through the experimentation under three different environments.

  • For the autonomous movement, the optimal path planning connecting between current and target positions is essential, and the optimal path of mobile robot means obstacle-free and the shortest length path to a target position. Many actual mobile robots should move without any information of surrounded obstacles. Thus, this paper suggests new methods of path planning and obstacle avoidment, suitable in unknown environments. This method of path planning always tracks the local target expected as the optimal one, and the result of continuous tracking becomes the first generated moving path. This path, however, do not regard the collision with obstacles. Thus, this paper suggests a new method of obstacle avoidance resembled with the Potential Field method. Finally, a simulation confirms the performance and correctness of the path planning and obstacle avoidance, suggested in this paper.

  • In swarm robot systems, each robot must behaves by itself according to the its states and environments, and if necessary, must cooperates with other robots in order to carry out a given task. Therefore it is essential that each robot has both learning and evolution ability to adapt the dynamic environments. In this paper, the new learning and evolution method based on reinforcement learning having delayed reward ability and distributed genetic algorithms is proposed for behavior learning and evolution of collective autonomous mobile robots. Reinforcement learning having delayed reward is still useful even though when there is no immediate reward. And by distributed genetic algorithm exchanging the chromosome acquired under different environments by communication each robot can improve its behavior ability. Specially, in order to improve the performance of evolution, selective crossover using the characteristic of reinforcement learning is adopted in this paper. we verify the effectiveness of the proposed method by applying it to cooperative search problem.

To this end, technologies related to the 4th industrial revolution and smart factory are synthesized, and the classification criteria of Dae-Hoon Kim et al. (2019) are applied, but additional opinions of experts are collected and related technologies are converted to artificial intelligence (AI), Big Data, and Cloud Computing. As a base technology, mobile, Internet of Things (IoT), block chain as hyper-connected technology, unmanned transportation (autonomous driving), robot, 3D printing, drone as a convergence technology, smart manufacturing and logistics, smart healthcare, smart transportation and smart finance were classified as smart industrial technologies. As a result of confirming the priorities for technical use by AHP analysis and calculating the total weight, manufacturing companies have a high ranking in mobile, artificial intelligence (AI), big data, and robots, while service companies are in big data and robots, artificial intelligence (AI), and smart healthcare are ranked high, and in all companies, it is in the order of big data, artificial intelligence (AI), robot, and mobile. Through this study, it was clearly identified which technologies should be applied first in order to respond to the 4th industrial revolution and change to a smart company.

  • These days the number of aged and disabled people is increasing rapidly. But most of the disabled or the aged who have the ability to work, want to engage in economic activities and solve social restrictions as well as their bad financial conditions. This paper concerns about the tracking control of an electric wheelchair robot for welfare vehicle where the seat and electric wheelchair are separated and electric wheelchair robot must be autonomously controlled without the help of assistant. So the aged or the disabled people can drive welfare vehicle by himself by adopting this system. Therefore the concept of both an autonomous driving of electric wheelchair and path tracking robots is required in this system. Finally we suggested fuzzy controller in order to control the path tracking of electric wheelchair robot and compared the capability of the proposed controller with conventional PID controller.
