  • In this article, the effects of stress on central nerve system and heart function and the concept of heart rate variability were reviewed. HRV(Heart Rate Variability), the periodical change of the heart rate, is indicated larger in the healthier because they respond flexibly to various sorts of facts influencing on HR. HRV analysis is largely composed of the time domain analysis and the frequency analysis. In the former the flexibility of heart function is analysed, while in the latter autonomic nerve function is examined, which is the degree of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve activity and the state of balance. Furthermore, existence or nonexistence of disease and/or level of stress can be estimated by measuring the variability and normality of heart rate, and balance of autonomic nerve system, and through HRV biofeedback the symptoms of anxiety disorder or asthma can be reduced.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of the exercise performance of yoga and pilates on the autonomic nervous system in an effort to provide some clinical information on exercise prescription. The subjects were 20 selected college students who majored in P.E. A yoga group and a pilates group were organized with 10 students respectively, the autonomic nervous system of the students was measured before the exercise, immediately after that and 30 minutes after recovery. The findings of the study were as follows: First, there were significant differences in the yoga group's stress index and average pulse according to the main effect of the time and interaction effect between the time and group. Second, there were significant differences in the yoga group's sympathetic nervous system activity and autonomic nerve balance according to all the main effect of the time, interaction effect between the time and group and the main effect of group. Third, there were significant differences in HRV(Heart Rate Variability), parasympathetic nervous system activity, SDNN, and RMSSD according to the main effect of the time, and interaction effect between the time and group and the main effect of group produced no statistically significant differences. In conclusion, yoga seemed to be effective at lowering stress index and average pulse. Specifically, yoga exercise seemed to exert a more positive influence on the decrease of sympathetic nervous system activity and autonomic nerve balance than pilates exercise.

  • Background : Pulse-respiration ratio has been used for estimating subject's status in oriental medicine. Pulse and respiration is strongly associated with autonomic nerve system. But there is no research about correlation between pulse-respiration ratio and autonomic nerve system. Objectives : We performed this study to know correlation between pulse-respiration ratio and HRV(heart rate variability) that shows autonomic nerve system status well and to clarify clinical meaning of pulse-respiration ratio. Methods : After subject's 10 minutes rest, we measured subject's ECG, respiration pattern and HRV. In this research, subject's number is 95(Male 50/Female 45). We calculated pulse-respiration ratio from ECG and respiration pattern. Then, we analyzed correlation between pulse-respiration ratio and HRV parameters in all subjects, 2 group divided by Wan-Maek(P-R ratio 4.28). We tried to compare HRV parameters among Wan-Maek, Sak-Maek and Ji-Maek group. Correlation analysis between pulse-respiration Ratio and Pulse rate, respiration rate is performed. Finally correlation analysis between Respiration and HRV parameters in all subjects, 2 group divided by Wan-Maek(4.28) is studied. Results : 1. Mean pulse-respiration is 4.10${\pm}$0.67, Mean pulse rate is 68.06${\pm}$7.82bpm, Mean respiration rate is 16.81${\pm}$2.72 times per minute in all subjects. 2. Correlation analysis between pulse-respiration ratio and HRV parameters of high pulse-respiration ratio group is not significant. But, in low pulse-respiration ratio group, HFnorm(correlation coefficient 0.306, p= 0.018), lnHF (0.308, p=0.002) is significantly correlated with pulse-respiration ratio. 3. Comparison of HRV parameters among Wan-Maek, Sak-Maek and Ji-Maek Group is not significant. 4. Pulse-respiration ratio is more affected by respiration rate(correlation coefficient-0.17, p=0.000) than pulse rate (correlation coefficient 0.396, p=0.000). 5. Correlation analysis between respiration rate and HRV parameters of high pulse-respiration ratio group is not significant. But, in low pulse-respiration ratio group, HFnorm (correlation coefficient -0.327, p=0.011), LF/HF(0.346, p=0.007), lnHF (-0.355, p=0.006) are significantly correlated with respiration rate. Conclusion : Pulse-respiration ratio and parasympathetic index has positive correlation. The closer Wan-Maek, The higher parasympathetic index in low pulse-respiration ratio group. Respiration rate is more related with pulse-respiration ratio than pulse rate. Respiration is negatively correlated with autonomic parameters. And the slower respiration, the higher parasympathetic index in low pulse-respiration ratio group.

  • The carotid sinus nerve (CSN) is well known as mediating baroreflexes. However, studies of its detailed histological analysis are scant in the literature. Therefore, the current anatomical study sought to better elucidate the microanatomy of the CSN. Ten fresh frozen adult cadavers underwent dissection of the CSN. Then, it was harvested and submitted for histological and immunohistochemical staining. Specimens were all shown to be nerve fibers on histology and immunohistochemistry. We identified tyrosine hydroxylase positive fibers in all CSN specimens. These fibers were always found to be within the CSN and not on its surface i.e., epineurium. Based on our findings, the majority of fibers contained in the CSN are tyrosine positive in nature. Further studies are necessary to understand the true function of this autonomic nerve fibers.

  • This study investigated the relationship between drinking and health factors including vaso-aging degree, stress index, stress resistance, fatigue and activity of autonomic nerve system etc. The subjects were 20,925 persons who had received health examination by Korean Medicine and submitted questionnaires about drinking history, for 8 months from March to November. The vaso-aging degree were measured by APG (Accelerated Photoplethysmograph). The stress index and resistance, fatigue and activity of autonomic nerve system were measured by HRV (Heart Rate Variability). We analyzed the relationship between drinking and various variables by chi-square test with SPSS ver. 19.0. Regarding the relationship between drinking and vaso-aging degree, there was significant differences(p<0.05). But regarding the relationship between drinking and the other factors, there were no statistically differences. This study suggests that the vaso-aging degree is affected by drinking alcohol.

  • Acute pandysautonomic neuropathy(APN) is an uncommon clinical entitiy involving vasomotor, sudomotor, pupilomotor, secretomotor and other autonomic systems. Both sympathetic or parasympathetic fibers are involved with relative preservation of somatic sensory and motor function. Although APN shares several clinical features with GBS, it is not clear whether APN is a subvariety of GBS. We report two young patients with APN. Patient 1 was a 18-year-old girl with recurrent fainting spells. Patient 2 was a 23-year-old man sufferring from unexplained nausea and vomiting. Both had a history of previous upper respiratory infection. They presented with gastroparesis, anhydrosis and orthostatic hypotension. Mild numbness and tingling sense was present, but motor power was intact. Neurologic examination showed bilateral tonic pupil, decreased pain and vibration sense, and absent tendon reflexes. Nerve conduction study indicated diffuse sensorimotor polyneuropathy. Nerve biopsy in patient 2 revealed axonal degeneration. After conservative management, gastrointestinal symptoms were improved in patient 2, however, patient 1 suffered from the symptoms lasting more than several months. These cases suggest that post-infectious dysautonomic symptoms in young patient may indicate the diagnosis of APN. Although the natural course is generally benign, accurate diagnosis and proper management may be mandatory for the better clinical outcome.

  • The word of stress was wsed in the field of physics as a external force from 17th century, but the meaning of this stress had chafed to the internal and exteral demand fort the human body in medical area. All the stumulants which make stress was called as j stressor. When animals get stress blucose excreted from liver to adapt for the emergent state ant some related hormone secrete convert protein and lipid to glucose for the purpose of energy supply to muscle. As a results heart rate, blood pressure, respiration rate are increased and musclse are strengthed. These physiolgical reactions ate controlled by autonomic nerve system under the control of hyothalamus in brain. Autonomic nerve system and endocrinary system are react harmoiously to stress reaction. According to the stress reaction, adrenomedullary system are stimulated, and epinephrine, morepinephrine are exceted. Author experimented the effect of the immobilizational stress to rat by analyzing the variaition of catecholamine secrction, the Na concentration and the effect of the antistresf effect by Panax Ginseng which is a traditional Korean herb medicine. The concentration of the norepinephrine, epinephrin, and dopamin in normal rat are 1 578 ng/ml, 0.365 ng/ml, and 0.731 ng/ml respectively, but in the immobilyzed stress groIn the concentration were increased to 1.915 ng.ml, 0.854 ng/ml, and 2,361 ng/ml which she the high show the higher concentration of catecholamine to stressor.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this research is to verify the effects of the Electromagnetic acupuncture(EMA) on BL15 by Pupil size variability(PSV) which is directly related to the activation of the Autonomic Nervous System. Methods : Thirty male subjects participated in this study and were divided into three groups(non-stimulated, manual acupuncture and EMA group). The size of pupil was measured in the cube place of $60{\times}60{\times}60$ cm in order to avoid the effect of the surrounding circumstances. All subjects were measured the size of left pupil about 200sec in the constant illumination. Results : We observed the decrease in PSV of manual acupuncture group compared to non-stimulation group, but it was not significant statistically(p>0.05). The decrease in PSV of EMA group was observed in comparison to two groups, and we confirmed the result of significant difference statistically(p<0.05). Conclusions : We concluded that EMA treatment method is enough to activate in the parasympathetic nerve system by inducing the biotransformation.
