As technology in 3D industry has rapidly advanced, a lot of studies primarily focusing on visual function and cognition have become vigorous. However, studies on effect of 3D visual fatigue on autonomic nervous system have not less been conducted. Thus, this study was to identify and determine the effect that might have a negative influence on sympathetic nervous system, parasympathetic nervous system, and cardiovascular system. Fifteen undergraduates (female: 9, mean age: $22.53{\pm}2.55$) participated and were sat on a comfortable chair, viewing a 3D content during about 1 hour. Cardiac responses like SDNN(standard deviation of RR intervals), RMS-SD(root mean squared successive difference), and HF/LF ratios extracted from the measured PPG(Photo-PlethysmoGram) before viewing 3D were compared to those after viewing 3D. The results showed that after subjects watched the 3D, responses in sympathetic nervous system and parasympathetic nervous system were activated and deactivated, respectively relative to those before watching the 3D. The results showed that HF/LF ratio, Ln(LF), and Ln(HF) after viewing 3D were significantly reduced relative to those before viewing 3D. No significant effects were observed in SDNN and RMS-SD. Results obtained in this study showed that visual fatigue induced by watching 3D adversely influenced autonomic nervous system, and thereby reduced heart rate variability causing sympathetic nervous acceleration.
Objectives : The study is performed to investigate the influence of psychological stress on neck muscles tone and heart rate variability(HRV). Methods : This study was carried out with the data from stress response index score(SRI), surface electromyography(sEMG) and HRV. First subjects were divided into two group according to the SRI points. Subjects in group A had points of SRI in which lower than 30 points. Subjects in group B had points of SRI in which higher than 30 points. Then we investigated how to difference of the index of sEMG and HRV according to each groups. Results : In this study, the muscle contraction of both upper trapezius muscle in stress group were higher than non-stress group significantly. Complexity, root mean square of successive differences of R-R intervals(RMSSD), standard deviation difference between adjacent normal to normal intervals(SDSD), high frequency oscillation power(Ln(HF)), normalized HF(Norm HF) in stress group were lower than non-stress group significantly and normalized LF(Norm LF) was higher. Conclusions : This results show that the stress was associated with neck muscle condition and autonomic nervous system.

본 연구는 자율신경계반응 중 GSR(galvanic skin Response)과 SKT(skin temperature)분석을 통하여 3단계 각성 모드인 직관적, 인지적, 행동적 모드를 평가하는 연구이다.
Recently in HCI research, emotion recognition is one of the core processes to implement emotional intelligence. There are many studies using bio signals in order to recognize human emotions, but it has been done merely for the basic emotions and very few exists for the other emotions. The purpose of present study is to confirm the difference of autonomic nervous system (ANS) response in three emotions (boredom, pain, and surprise). There were totally 217 of participants (male 96, female 121), we presented audio-visual stimulus to induce boredom and surprise, and pressure by using the sphygmomanometer for pain. During presented emotional stimuli, we measured electrodermal activity (EDA), skin temperature (SKT), electrocardiac activity (ECG) and photoplethysmography (PPG), besides; we required them to classify their present emotion and its intensity according to the emotion assessment scale. As the results of emotional stimulus evaluation, emotional stimulus which we used was shown to mean 92.5% of relevance and 5.43 of efficiency; this inferred that each emotional stimulus caused its own emotion quite effectively. When we analyzed the results of the ANS response which had been measured, we ascertained the significant difference between the baseline and emotional state on skin conductance response, SKT, heart rate, low frequency and blood volume pulse amplitude. In addition, the ANS response caused by each emotion had significant differences among the emotions. These results can probably be able to use to extend the emotion theory and develop the algorithm in recognition of three kinds of emotions (boredom, surprise, and pain) by response measurement indicators and be used to make applications for differentiating various human emotions in computer system.

Purpose : This study aims to examine the influences of galvanic vestibular stimulation on autonomic reaction of normal adults. Methods : Participants in this research totaled 28 (14 men and 14 women). Galvanic vestibular stimulation was conducted with a binaural electrode configuration for 60 sec. Galvanic vestibular stimulation measurements were conducted with the subjects in a prone position. Measured items included skin conductance, blood flow, pulse rate, and respiratory rate. Measurements were repeated for a total of five times, before application, during application, after application, 5 minutes after application and 10 minutes after application. Results : Skin conductance reaction showed statistically significant differences in changes depending on time after galvanic vestibular stimulation and there were statistically differences in changes of blood flow, pulse rate and respiratory rate after galvanic vestibular stimulation. Conclusion : Blood flow, pulse rate and respiratory rate of autonomic reactions were not influenced by galvanic vestibular stimulation, but skin conductance reaction was influenced by it and it was found that it was reduced during and after stimulation rather than before stimulation. Consequently, it was considered that galvanic vestibular stimulation affected the autonomic reaction.
Stress involves changes in behavior, autonomic function and the secretion of hormones. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) contributes to physiological adaptive process in short durations. In particular, heart rate variability (HRV) analysis is commonly used as a quantitative marker depicting the ANS activity related to mental stress. The aim of this study is to investigate correlations between psychological responses to stress and HRV indices induced by the cognitive stressor. Thirty-three participants rated their mental and physical symptoms occurred during the past two weeks on Stress Response Inventory (SRI), which is composed of seven stress factors that may influence the status of mental stress levels. Then, they underwent the psychophysiological procedures, which are collected electrocardiogram (ECG) signals during a cognitive stress task. HRV indices, the standard deviation of R-R interval (SDNN), root mean square of successive R-R interval difference (RMSSD) and low frequency (LF)/high frequency (HF) ratio were extracted from ECG signals. Physiological responses were calculated stress responses by subtracting mean of the baseline from the mean of recovery. Stress factors such as tension, aggression, depression, fatigue, and frustration were positively correlated to HRV indices. In particular, aggression had significant positive correlations to SDNN, RMSSD and LF/HF ratio. Increased aggressive responses to stress correlated with the increases of all HRV indices. This means the increased autonomic coactivation. Additionally, tension, depression, fatigue, and frustration were positively associated with RMSSD reflecting increases in parasympathetic activation. The autonomic coactivation may represent an integrated response to specific cognitive reactions such as the orienting response.
Tn the present study, 9 photographs from the International Affective Picture System (IAPS) judged to express best 2-dimensional sensibility were selected and used to stimulate the subjects. The goal of the study lay in verifying whether or not the consequent affective changes in the subjects can be discriminated psychologically and physiologically in terms of arousal and relaxation. In order to determine affective changes, the physiological signals of the subjects' autonomic nervous system were measured through electrocardiogram (ECG) , galvanic skin response (GSR), skin temperature, and respiration. After stimulation and measurement, subjective evaluation was conducted. Subjective evaluation revealed that affective arousal level could be classified into 4 consecutive stages: arousal 〉 unpleasant arousal, pleasant arousal 〉 comfort 〉 relaxation. Analysis revealed that the responses of the autonomic nervous system, too, could be classified into 3 consecutive stages: arousal, unpleasant arousal, pleasant arousal 〉 comfort 〉 relaxation. By selecting and using 9 photographs from the IAPS deemed best to express Koreans'2-dimensional sensibility, the present study confirmed that it is possible to discriminate changes in the subjects' affective arousal level in terms of arousal and relaxation through psychological and physiological evaluation.

The discrete state theory on emotion postulated that there existed discrete emotions, such as happiness, anger, fear, disgust, and so forth. Many investigators who emphasized discreteness of emotions have suggested that discrete emotions entailed their specific activities in the autonomic nervous system. The purposes of this study were to develop a model of emotion-specific physiological response patterns. The study postulated six emotions (i.e., happiness, sadness, anger, disgust, fear, and surprise) as the basic discrete emotions. Thirty eight college students participated in the present study. Twelve slides (2 for each emotion category) were presented to the subjects in random order. During resting period of 30 s prior to the presentation of each slide, four presentation of each slide, four physiological measures (EEG, ECG, EDA, and respiration) were recorded to establish a baseline. The same physiological measures were recorded while each slide was being presented for 60 s (producing an emotional sate). Then, the subjects were asked to rate the degree of emotion induced by the slide on semantic differential scales. This procedure was repeated for every slide. Based upon the results, a model of emotion-specific physiological response patterns was developed: four emotion (fear, disgust, sadness, and anger) were classified according to the characteristics of EEG and autonomic responses. However, emotions of happiness and surprise were not distinguished by any combination of the physiological measures employed in this study, suggesting another appropriate measure should be adopted for differentiation.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of acupuncture on autonomic nervous system in anxiety patients and normal subjects by using SCR(Skin Conductance Response). Methods : The study group consists of 15 anxiety patients as the experimental group stimulated by verum acupuncture, 15 anxiety patients as the control group stimulated by sharm acupuncture, and 15 normal subjects stimulated by verum acupuncture. We measured GSR of experimental and control group, normal subjects during Working Memory Test and acupuncture stimulation. Results : 1. Measured value of SCR during Working Memory Test was significant different in control group, but it was not significant different in experimental group. 2. SCR value of three groups was significantly decreased during acupuncture stimulated. There was only significantly SCR value change during 0min.-5min, of first acupuncture. The section of the other groups was no significantly different. 3. STAI scores of experimental group and control group were significantly decreased. Conclusions : The study results suggest that acupuncture stimulation and sham acupuncture also effective on activity in the sympathetic nervous system and STAI scores.
