Tool path planning of hole-making operations in ejector plate of injection mould using modified shuffled frog leaping algorithm

  • Optimization of hole-making operations in manufacturing industry plays a vital role. Tool travel and tool switch planning are the two major issues in hole-making operations. Many industrial applications such as moulds, dies, engine block, automotive parts etc. requires machining of large number of holes. Large number of machining operations like drilling, enlargement or tapping/reaming are required to achieve the final size of individual hole, which gives rise to number of possible sequences to complete hole-making operations on the part depending upon the location of hole and tool sequence to be followed. It is necessary to find the optimal sequence of operations which minimizes the total processing cost of hole-making operations. In this work, therefore an attempt is made to reduce the total processing cost of hole-making operations by applying relatively new optimization algorithms known as shuffled frog leaping algorithm and proposed modified shuffled frog leaping algorithm for the determination of optimal sequence of hole-making operations. An industrial application example of ejector plate of injection mould is considered in this work to demonstrate the proposed approach. The obtained results by the shuffled frog leaping algorithm and proposed modified shuffled frog leaping algorithm are compared with each other. It is seen from the obtained results that the results of proposed modified shuffled frog leaping algorithm are superior to those obtained using shuffled frog leaping algorithm.

An Experimental Study on Sink Mark Formation in Compression Molded SMC Parts with Rib (리브를 가진 일체형 SMC 압축성형재의 Sink Mark 형성에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • Compression molding of SMC (Sheet Molding Compound) in a thin plaque with substructures like a rib is involved with the formation of surface defect along the centerline over the rib area called by sink mark depending on process parameters. The surface quality of the external panels in automotive manufacturing is so critical that this kind of defect should be eliminated during manufacturing stages. The effect of process parameters on sink mark formation and the distribution of chopped fiberglasses in the compression molded thin plaque with a rib was experimentally investigated in the present study. In order to estimate the effect of the molding parameters such as molding temperature, mold closing speed, depth of the rib, corner radius of the rib, and final molded part thickness of flat portion on the depth of sink mark and the distribution of fiberglasses in the molded SMC part with the rib under the present experimental conditions, the molding parameters used in experiments were non-dimensionalized equation for predicting the depth of sink mark was determined through dimensional analysis based on the experimental data. The orientation and distribution of fiberglasses and fillers which directly affect the formation and depth of sink mark were investigated by taking the photographs of the cross-sectional area of the molded specimen using scanning electron microscope. The experimental results proposed from this investigation are useful in understanding the formation of sink mark and predicting the depth of sink mark in compression molding of SMC with substructures.

A Study on Effect of the Shape of Electrodes in Alkaline Water Electrolysis (알카리 수전해에서 전극 형상의 영향에 관한 연구)

  • For an investigation on the effect of the shape of electrodes in alkaline water electrolysis, two kinds of stack with circular and square electrode array are used to visualize both for behaviors of hydrogen bubble around the electrodes and for measurements of hydrogen production from these two stacks. The electrolytes for the hydrogen production experiment were applied for 20 wt%, 25 wt%, 30 wt% and 35 wt% of KOH alkaline aqueous solutions. As a result, the adhesion length of bubbles attached around the square electrode in the visualization experiment was found to be 1.7 times longer compared with the attached around the circular electrode. In the hydrogen production experiments, the volume of hydrogen production of the stack by using circular electrode array was approximately 3% more than that of the stack with square electrode array. These observations may be caused by the effect of the bubbles attached to the around the electrodes obstructing mass transfer such as hydrogen exhaust and electrolyte supply.

  • Very high cycle fatigue (VHCF) behavior of aerospace components has emerged much attention due to their long service life. In this study, a piezoelectric ultrasonic fatigue testing (UFT) system has been developed by Mbrosiatec Co., Ltd. to study the high cycle fatigue (HCF) strength of Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Hourglass-shaped specimens have been investigated in the range from $10^6$ to $10^9$ cycles at room temperature under completely reversed R = -1 loading conditions,. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis revealed that failures occurred in the entire range up to the gigacycle regime, and the fractures have beenfound to be initiated from the surface, unlike in steels. However, it was found from the SEM microgprahs that microcracks transformed into intergranular fractures. Thus, it can be concluded from according to the results that this test method can be applicable to commercialized automotive and railroad parts that require high cycle fatigue strength.

Spreading Dynamics of an Ellipsoidal Drop Impacting on a Heated Substrate (고온으로 가열된 고체 표면과 충돌하는 타원형 액적의 퍼짐 거동)

  • Unlike spherical drop impact, ellipsoidal drop impact can control the bouncing height on a heated surface by significantly altering impact behavior. To scrutinize the effect of the aspect ratio (AR) of the drop on the bounce suppression, in this study, non-axisymmetric spreading behaviors are observed from two side views and characterized based on the spreading width of the drop for horizontal principal axes. In addition, the maximum spreading width is investigated for various ARs. The results show that as the AR increases, the maximum spreading width of the minor axis increases, whereas that of the major axis shows no significant variation. In the regime of high AR and high impact velocity, liquid fragmentations by three parts are observed during bouncing. These fragmentations are discussed in this work. The hydrodynamic features of ellipsoidal drop impact will help understand bouncing control on non-wetting surfaces for several applications, such as self-cleaning and spray cooling.

  • Following the recent trend in the automotive manufacturing technologies, the product design subject to the die casting becomes more and more complex. The requirement of the die design becomes more demanding than ever before. In some cases the product's shape can have multiple slender manifolds. In such cases, design of the inlet and outlet parts of the die is very important in the whole manufacturing process. The main issues required for the qualified products are to attain gentle and uniform flow of the molten liquid within the passages of the die. To satisfy such issues, the inlet cylinder ('bed cylinder' in this paper) must be as large as possible and simultaneously the outlet opening at the end of each passage must be as small as possible. However these in turn obviously bring additional manufacturing costs caused by re-melting of the bed cylinder and increased power due to the small outlet-openings. The purpose of this paper is to develop effective simulation methods of calculation for fluid flows in multiple columns, which mimic the actual complex design, and to get some useful information which can give some contributions to the die-casting industry. We have used a commercial code CFX in the numerical simulation. The primary parameter involved is the size of the air-vent. We will show how the very small opening of the outlet, i.e. the air-vent, can be treated with the aid of the porous model provided in the code. To check the validity of the numerical results we have also conducted a simple experiment by using water.

Correlation between Lubrication Characteristics of Engine and Fuel Economy (엔진 윤활특성과 연비 상관성에 대한 연구)

  • This paper presents the results of an experimental investigation of the correlation between the lubrication characteristics of an engine and its fuel economy. Improving the lubrication characteristics of the engine oil is one of the most efficient ways to improve a car's fuel economy. The methods to accomplish this include lowering the viscosity, adding a friction modifier and optimizing the shear stability index of a viscosity index improver. In addition, it is necessary to use different methods to reduce the friction to individual lubrication areas, because different lubrication regimes are used for different engine parts. The experimental investigation in this study is based on design of experiments ; this paper presents the results of a modified Sequence VID test, which is an ASTM standard test used to measure the effects of automotive engine oils on the fuel economy of passenger cars. The results demonstrate the effects of the following lubrication factors on the fuel economy : the low temperature cranking viscosity, high-temperature high shear (HTHS) viscosity, friction modifier, polymer type and shear stability index of the viscosity index improver. Moreover, this study involves an analysis of variance based on design of experiments. The test results show that the HTHS viscosity, friction modifier and shear stability index of the viscosity index improver are more effective than the other factors. Therefore, lowering the viscosity, adding a friction modifier and optimizing the shear stability index of a viscosity index improver should be considered to improve fuel economy.

  • 최근, 수송기기 분야는 국제 환경규제 강화에 따른 CO2 절감, 연비향상, 경량화를 위한 기술적 수요가 증대되고 있으며, 그린카, 그린선박 등 친환경 수송기기에 대한 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 하지만, 기존의 금속소재가 가지는 경량화의 한계를 극복하기 위해서는 CFRP, GFRP 등 금속대체 복합소재를 적용한 수송용 경량부품 개발에 대한 필요성이 요구되고 있다. 복합소재는 섬유사이에서 응력을 전달하는 기지(Matrix)와 하중을 전달하는 섬유(Fiber)의 종류와 양 및 적층 각도에 따라 수송용 부품에 적합한 기계적 특성을 얻을 수 있고, 높은 비강도와 비강성의 값을 갖게 되어 경량화가 용이한 장점이 있다. 반면, 섬유재의 종류, 성형방법, 경화온도 등에 따라 물리적 특성에 큰 변화가 발생하며, 수지의 경화조건에 따라 성형시간이 많이 소요되는 단점을 가지고 있다. 따라서, 본 연구에서는 자동차, 선박, 항공기, 철도차량 등 각종 수송기기의 경량화를 목적으로 생산성 향상 및 성형시간 절감을 위해 열가소성 수지, 저온속경화 수지를 적용하여, 경화 시간을 단축시키고, 3D-fabric 및 다층구조 직물을 Vacuum Infusion 공법으로 성형하여, 기존의 섬유재 적층시 소요되는 작업 공정을 간소화 할 수 있도록, 고속성형 복합소재를 적용한 수송용 경량부품 개발에 관한 연구를 수행하였다.

A Design of Static Meta-Model for Reuse Framework of Embedded System (임베디드 시스템의 재사용 프레임워크를 위한 정적 메타모델 설계)

  • Currently interests of embedded software in various areas such as automotive field, ship field, robot field is increasing according to expand market of embedded systems. Various researches such as embedded operating systems, embedded software modeling technique, embedded software testing, and so on are going in progress. However systematic engineering approach in embedded system development is poor because embedded areas focus on hardware parts until now. Furthermore, framework-based de sign technique considering reusability is not reflected in embedded system development. Those development results in many of dead codes scattered in system, and results in poor reusability of system. This paper suggests a framework of embedded system for reusability and a static meta-model for reuse framework. Proposed meta-model expresses not only the structure of reuse framework, but also allows a designer to extend and design easily models of embedded system based on reuse framework according to various embedded system types.

A Review on IPP/Elastomer/Nanofiller Composites for the Possibility of Use as Power Cable Insulations (동일배열 폴리프로필렌/엘라스토머/나노충전제 복합체의 전력케이블 절연체로서의 사용 가능성에 대한 문헌적 고찰)

  • For use as recyclable power cable insulations without dielectric oil, technology trends of IPP based thermoplastic polyolefin elastomer(TPO) nanocomposites were reviewed. In 2010 research results of IPP nanocomposite dielectrics for power capacitors showed promising high voltage properties except dielectric loss. Research of IPP based TPO nanocomposites for automotive exterior parts revealed considerable improvements of mechanical properties including impact strength, especially minimization of compatibilizer content, the origin of dielectric loss. A study on electrical properties of IPP based TPO nanocomposites containing a few weight percent of nanofillers for power cable insulations is suggested.
