  • For many industrial problems originating from aerodynamic noise, noise prediction techniques, reliable and easy to apply, would be of great value to engineers and manufacturers. General algorithm is presented for the prediction of internal flow-induced noise from quick opening throttle valve in an automotive engine. This algorithm is based on the integral formula derived by using the General Green Function, Lighthill's acoustic analogy and Curle's extension of Lighthill's. Novel approach of this algorithm is that the integral formula is so arranged as to predict frequency-domain acoustic signal at any location in a duct by using unsteady flow data in space and time, which can be provided by the Computational Fluid Dynamics Techniques. This semi-analytic model is applied to the prediction of internal aerodynamic noise from a throttle valve in an automotive engine. The predicted noise levels from the throttle valve show good agreement with actual measurements. The results show that the dipole noise is dominant in this phenomena and the origin of noise sources is attributed to the anti-vortex lines formed in the down-stream from a throttle valve. This illustrative computation shows that the current method permits generalized predictions of flow noise generated by bluff bodies and turbulence in flow ducts.

  • This work focuses on finding out the noise source and the method of reducing the noise level of LPG(liquefied petroleum gas) fuel injector. The noise of LPG injector in operating condition is due to the impact between valve and valve seat. This study shows that if the revolution of engine is increased, the noise of LPG injector will be more serious but it is not nearly affected by the increment of fuel pressure. The source and transmission paths of noise are identified through the analysis of noise generation mechanism and noise spectrum. The sound absorbing material is tested to verify its efficiency of sound absorption thor the LPG injector. The effect of noise reduction of absorbing material is remarkable when the engine speed is high. Consequently two methods of reducing the noise level are suggested from the identified results. The one is to equip the absorbing material on the outer side of injector and the other is to coat with a soft material or equip a soft ring on the surface of impact.

  • This paper shows the methods about an improvement of the sound quality, which is improvement for automobil market recently. Especially, the rumble noise in the passenger compartment makes driver uncomfortable. For an improvement of the rumble noise, in this paper, the increase of the number of balance weight of the crank shaft(from 4 to 8), the vibration constrainer of cylinder block and the flexible flywheel were applied to power plant. Among those kinds of applications, the application of the flexible flywheel to power plant makes not only the vibration of the engine mount boss reduce most effectly but also the interior noise. It also improves the sound quality and the rumble noise disappears in the passenger compartment.

  • This paper describes about the development of new concept's rear wheel guards for the reduction of Road Noise in the passenger vehicle using test. The new wheel guards are proposed by various frequency chamber concept and different textile layers concept. Two wheel guards were verified by small cabin resonance test and vehicle test. Through new developing process without vehicle test, Result of road noise will be expected when new concepts and materials of wheel guard is applied into automotive vehicle. As a result of the application of Aimed Helmholtz and Multi-layers concept, this paper classifies the road noise, cost and weight are reduced by new concepts and the solutions are adopted into the 2 cars.

  • In this work, the effect of field-degradation of automotive polymeric interior parts on the squeak characteristics was studied for a number of used vehicles with various mileages and years of service. The purpose of this study was to characterize the squeak noise related with long-term degradation in service life. The characteristics of field-degraded polymeric samples are analyzed using Fourier transform infrared(FT-IR) spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Complicated carbonyl spectra from FT-IR were deconvoluted into various carbonyls to trace field-degradation phenomenon. In addition, various mechanical tests, i.e. tensile test, hardness test as well as coefficient of friction test, were performed to analyze the variation in mechanical properties due to field-degradation. Squeak noise was measured and analyzed by frequency analysis. It was shown that the changes in the chemical structures of polymer due to field-degradation influenced the variation in mechanical properties, and squeak noise may worsen by increasing the squeak noise level in the wide frequency range. The results indicated that customer complaints regarding the squeak noise coming from used vehicles might be one of the important reliability issues because the increase in sound pressure level especially in the high frequency range could annoy drivers and passengers.

  • In automotive industry, all passenger vehicles are treated with damping materials to reduce structure borne noise. The effectiveness of damping treatments depends upon design parameters such as choice of damping materials. locations and size of the treatment. Generally, the CAE method uses modal strain-energy information of the bare structural panels to identify flexible regions, which in turn facilitates optimization of damping treatments with respect to location and size. This paper proposes a design of the damping material with a CAE(Computer Aided Engineering) methodology based on finite element analysis and DOE(Design Of Experiments) to optimize damping treatments.

  • The evaluation of the noise for the an existing engine was carried out to improve the current noise level. The applied techniques were 1m air-borne noise, combustion noise analysis, torsional analysis at the front pulley and sound pressure intensity. In addition, the evaluation of the possibility to the noise reduction by means of wrapping the parts was performed to propose the detailed information in engine design. In view of the obtained results, the following countermeasures were recommended to reduce the current noise level through the above methods. Furthermore, in order to assess the influence of combustion noise on the overall engine noise, the noise test was also performed by the change of intake air temperature up to 5$0^{\circ}C$ in steps of 1$0^{\circ}C$. Finally, the fixed design specifications to reduce the engine noise will be decided in consideration of the test data for proto type engine.

  • Automotive turbochargers have become common in gasoline engines as well as diesel engines. They are excellent devices to effectively increase fuel efficiency and power of the engines, but they unfortunately cause several noise problems. The noises are classified into mechanical noises induced from movement of a rotating shaft and aerodynamic noises by air flow in turbochargers. The mechanical noises are whine and howling noises, and the aerodynamic noises are BPF (blade-passing frequency), pulsation, surge, some special frequency noises. These noises are bothering passengers because their levels are higher or their frequencies are clearly separated from engine or vehicle noises. The noise investigated in this paper is a BPF noise induced by compressor wheels, whose frequency is the multiplication of the number of compressor wheel blades and its rotational speed. The noise is strongly dependent upon the geometry of wheels and the number of blades. This study tried to apply a groove close to the inlet side of compressor wheels in order to reduce the BPF noise. The groove has successfully reduced the noise of narrow band frequency of a turbocharger. It shows that the groove could reduce the wide band frequency noise, the compressor BPF noise with a best shape of the groove.

  • The purpose of this study is developing the quantify the seat belt pulling Noise index and evaluation method. This paper presents the objective method to evaluate the emotional feeling about the pulling Noise of the seat belt. The physical quantification is required to objectively evaluate the emotional feeling of the pulling Noise. This is called the "Noise metric." The Noise metric is should correlated to the subjective rating of the pulling Noise. The pulling Noise index is developed throughout the linear regression of the Noise metric and the subjective rating. The developed index is used for the objective evaluation of the emotional feeling about the pulling Noise of a seat belt throughout the modification of seat belt components.
