  • The starter motor noise is usually well identified by the customers since it is operated while the engine is quiet, and leaves distinct impressions of the vehicle. In this study the design of experiments(DOE) was applied to the identification of the noise sources of direct drive starter motor since this process usually requires lengthy analysis and elaborate experiments. In the first stage of the test, five controllable factors(alignment and dynamic unbalance of armature, tightening torques of T/bolt and center bracket bolt, and alignment of the center bracket-yoke-rear bracket), excluding static unbalance, are sorted out of all possible factors. Test results showed that the dynamic unbalance and misalignment of armature are the major factors. However, the error level of the first test was relatively high, indicating that there might be some missing major factors. In the second stage test the results showed that both static and dynamic unbalances are the dominant factors contributing to more than 80% of the overall noise, while the misalignment contributes around 12%. Error of the second test was about 4% that could be considered satisfactory. The noise level of the optimal product was predicted to be reduced by 19dBA, and verification test showed the average noise reduction of 16.8dBA with the standard deviation of 3.2dBA, and proved the usefulness of the whole DOE process.

  • The contraction and expansion noise of a refrigerator are investigated, and some effective methods are proposed to reduce the level and occurrence frequency of noise. First, the noise of a refrigerator is measured to estimate the frequency spectrum and occurrence frequency of noise. Second, a sound visualization was conducted using an acoustic camera to determine the location of the noise source. From the results, it was observed that the internal part mainly producing noise was the third shelf in the freezer room. A method to estimate the acceleration on the location of the noise source is introduced to analyze the contraction and expansion noise precisely and accommodate experimental convenience. Noise reduction methods such as the replacement of the existing shelf with glass shelves, adoption of rail slides, and increase of roughness on the contact surface of the shelf are proposed and tested.

  • Recently, Most of diverse noise of vehicles has decreased competitively according to development of the automotive manufacturing technology. Especially, Passenger car manufacturers has been conducting buzz, squeak and rattle(BSR) noise test as a method of the noise evaluation tests to reduce an unpleasant sound from interior parts on the driving the car. This paper suggest a evaluation method for detecting position of noise source from measured noise signals of vehicle seats during random excitation BSR test. Hereby the BSR test procedure used the test regulation of 'G' company. The detection of noise source positions used the Sound image equipment. Through suggested the test method on this paper, an accurate analysis of noise source occurred in the BSR test will be possible.

  • The customers demand of a good vehicle agility consists of a quick reaction of the vehicle with the actuation of the throttle pedal on one hand and a high comfort level of vibration and noise within the vehicle on the other hand, which means the reduction of disturbing side effects. In order to achieve a satisfactory compromise it is necessary to gain a deeper understanding of the complex, high dynamic vibrations system "vehicle / drive train". For several years the ika has been carrying out such detailed vehicle investigations and test bench measurements in addition to comprehensive CAE analysis for various research projects in partnership with different vehicle manufacturers.

  • A balanced vane pump for the use of automotive power steering systems generates a flow ripple which is imposed upon the mean flow rate. The flow ripple interacts with the characteristics of the connected pipes, valves and steering gear in a complex manner to produce a pressure ripple, also known as fluid-borne noise. In order to reduce vibration level and produce quieter and more reliable power steering systems, it is important to measure the flow ripple produced by a pump with high accuracy and fast response. In this paper, the flow ripple generated by a vane pump in automotive power steering systems is measured by the remote instantaneous flow rate measurement method (RIFM) using hydraulic pipeline dynamics. In experiment, flow and pressure ripple wave forms are measured under various operating conditions. Also, the parameters affected upon the flow and pressure ripple are investigated by the frequency analysis.
