  • In this paper, computation results of reducible modeling, stress recovery and energy release rate were compared with the results of VABS, Virtual Crack Closure Technique. The result of stress recovery analysis for 1-D model including the stiffness matrix is compared with stress results of three-dimensional 3-D FEM. Energy release rate of composite beam with longitudinal cracks is calculated and compare verifications of numerical analysis results of 3-D FEM and VABS. The procedure of calculating energy release rate through dimensional reduction and stress recovery is intended to be efficient and be utilized in the life-cycle of high-altitude uav's wing, wind blades and tilt rotor blade.

  • The fatigue crack growth behavior of the SA516/60 steel used for pressure vessels was examined experimentally at room temperatures $25^{\circ}C$,$-30^{\circ}C$, $-60^{\circ}C$, $-80^{\circ}C$, $-100^{\circ}C$ and $-120^{\circ}C$ with stress ratio of R=0.05, 0.1 and 0.3. fatigue crack propagation rate da/dN related with stress intensity factor range $\Delta$K was influenced by stress ratio in stable than fatigue crack growth (Region II) with an increase in $\Delta$K. The resistance of fatigue crack growth at low temperature is higher compared with that at room temperature, which is attributed to the extent of plasticity-induced by compressive residual stress according to the cyclic loads. Fractographic examinations reveal that the differences of the fatigue crack growth characteristics between room and low temperatures are explained mainly by the crack closure and the strengthening due to the plasticity near the crack tip and roughness of the crack faces induced.

  • Predictions of diesel particulate filtration are typically made by modeling of a particle collection, and providing particle trapping levels in terms of a pressure drop. In the present study, a series of single channel diesel particulate filter (DPF) experiments are conducted, the pressure traces are inversely analyzed and essential filtration parameters are deducted for model closure. A DPF filtration model is formulated with a non-linear description of soot cake regression. Dependence of soot cake porosity, packing density, permeability, and soot density in filter walls on convective-diffusive particle transportation is examined. Sensitivity analysis was conducted on model parameters, relevant to the mode of transition. Soot cake porosity and soot packing density show low degrees of dispersion with respect to the Peclet number and have asymptotes at 0.97 and $70\;kg/m^3$, respectively, at high Peclet number. Soot density in the filter wall, which is inversely proportional to filter wall Peclet number, controls the filtration mode transition but exerts no influence on termination pressure drop. The percolation constant greatly alters the extent of pressure drop, but is insensitive to volumetric flow rate or temperature of exhaust gas at fixed operation mode.

  • Fatigue crack propagation behavior and the fatigue life in-high performance steel were investigated by means of fatigue crack propagation tests under constant loading conditions of 'R=0.1 and f=0.1 Hz', 'R=0.3 and f=0.3 Hz', and 'R=0.5 and f=0.5 Hz' for the load ratio and frequency, respectively. A modified Forman model was developed to describe the fatigue crack propagation behavior for the conditions. The modified Forman model is applicable to all fatigue crack propagation regions I, II, and III by implementing the threshold stress intensity factor range and the effective stress intensity factor range caused by crack closure. The results show that predicted fatigue lives of Forman and modified Forman models were 8,814 and 12,292 cycles, respectively when the crack propagated approximately 5.0 mm and the load ratio and frequency were both 0.1. Comparison of the test results indicates that the modified Forman model showed much more effective fatigue crack propagation behavior in high-performance steel.

  • This paper presents further investigation into the effect of over-expansion cycle in a spark-ignition engine. On the basis of the results obtained in previous studies, several combinations of late-closing (LC) of intake valve and expansion ratio were tested using a single-cylinder production engine. A large volume of intake capacity was inserted into the intake manifold to simulate multi-cylinder engines. With the large capacity volume, LC can decrease the pumping loss and then increase the mechanical efficiency. Increasing the expansion ratio from 11 to 23.9 with LC application can produce about 13% improvement of thermal efficiency which was suggested to be caused by the increased cycle efficiency. The decrease of compression ratio from 11 to 5.5 gives little effect on the thermal efficiency if the expansion ratio could be kept constant. Thus, the expansion ratio is revealed to be a determining factor for cycle efficiency, while compression ratio is no more important, which suggests the usefulness of controlling the intake charge with intake valve closure timing. These were successfully explained by simple thermodynamic calculation and thus the mechanism could be verified by the estimation.

  • Fine grained Al-5083 alloy produced by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) at $120^{\circ}C$ was tested for investigating mechanical properties and crack growth propagation behavior. Also, FEM stress and strain analysis for the samples during ECAP were investigated, using a plastic deformation analysis software DEFORM 2-D. Coarse grained as-received samples exhibited UTS of 255.6MPa with a elongation to failure of 34.4%. By contrast, the ECAPed fine grained samples exhibited UTS of 362.0MPa with a elongation to failure of 12.9%. Fatigue crack growth resistance and threshold of fine grained samples were lower than that of as-received coarse grained samples. The higher fatigue crack growth rate in the fine grained ECAPed samples may partially arise from small roughness closure effect due to smoother fracture surfaces.
