  • The wheel slip control systems are able to control the braking force more accurately and can be adapted to different vehicles more easily than conventional ABS (Anti-lock Brake System) systems. In realizing the wheel slip control systems, real-time information such as the tire braking force at each wheel is required. In addition, the optimal target slip values need to be determined depending on the braking objectives such as minimum braking distance and stability enhancement. In this paper, a robust wheel slip controller is developed based on the adaptive sliding mode control method and an optimal target slip assignment algorithm is proposed for maximizing the braking force. An adaptive law is formulated to estimate the braking force in real-time. The wheel slip controller is designed based on the Lyapunov stability theory considering the error bounds in estimating the braking force and the brake disk-pad friction coefficient. The target slip assignment algorithm searches for the optimal target slip value based on the estimated braking force. The performance of the proposed wheel slip control system is verified in HILS (Hardware-In-the-Loop Simulator) experiments and demonstrates the effectiveness of the wheel slip control in various road conditions.

The braking monitor estimates the tire braking force, lateral tire force and brake disk-pad friction coefficient utilizing the extended Kalman filter. The wheel slip controller is designed based on the sliding mode control method. The target slip assignment algorithm is proposed to maintain the vehicle stability based on the direct yaw moment controller and fuzzy logic. The performance of the proposed wheel slip control system is verified in simulations and demonstrates the effectiveness of the wheel slip control in various road conditions.

  • A vehicle stability control logic for 4WD hybrid electric vehicle is proposed using the regenerative braking of the rear motor and electronic brake force distribution module. Performance of the stability control logic is evaluated for J-turn and single lane change. It is found from the simulation results that the regenerative braking at rear motor is able to provide improved stability compared with the vehicle performance without my stability control. Additional improvement can be achieved by applying the regenerative braking plus electronic brake farce distribution control. It is expected that the regenerative braking offers additional improvement of the fuel economy as well as the vehicle stability control.

  • In this paper, a regenerative braking algorithm is proposed to make the maximum use of the regenerative braking energy for an independent front and rear motor drive parallel HEV. In the regenerative braking algorithm, the regenerative torque is determined by considering the motor capacity, motor efficiency, battery SOC, gear ratio, clutch state, engine speed and vehicle velocity. To implement the regenerative braking algorithm, HEV powertrain models including the internal combustion engine, electric motor, battery, manual transmission and the regenerative braking system are developed using MATLAB, and the regenerative braking performance is investigated by the simulator. Simulation results show that the proposed regenerative braking algorithm contributes to increasing the battery SOC, which recuperates 60 percent of the total braking energy while satisfying the design specification of the control logic. In addition, a control algorithm which limits the regenerative braking is suggested by considering the battery power capacity and dynamic response characteristics of the hydraulic control module.

  • For a vehicle Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), the control target is to maintain friction coefficients within maximum range to ensure minimum stopping distance and vehicle stability. But in order to achieve a directionally stable maneuver, tire side forces must be considered along with the braking friction. Focusing on combined braking and turning operation conditions, this paper presents a new control scheme for an ABS controller design, which calculates optimal target wheel slip ratio on-line based on vehicle dynamic states and prevailing road condition. A fuzzy logic approach is applied to maintain the optimal target slip ratio so that the best compromise between braking deceleration, stopping distance and direction stability performances can be obtained for the vehicle. The scheme is implemented using an 8-DOF nonlinear vehicle model and simulation tests were carried out in different conditions. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme is robust and effective. Compared with a fixed-slip ratio scheme, the stopping distance can be decreased with satisfactory directional control performance meanwhile.

  • Braking is a basic and an important safety feature for all vehicles, and the final braking performance of a vehicle is determined by the vehicle's ABS performance and tire performance. However, the combination of excellent ABS and tires will not always ensure good braking performance. This is due to the fact that tire performance has non-linearity and uncertainty in predicting the repeated increase and decrease of wheel slip when activating the ABS, thus increasing the uncertainty of tire performance prediction. Furthermore, existing studies predicted braking performance after using an ABS that used a wheel slip control as a controller, which was different from an actual vehicle's ABS that controlled angular acceleration, therefore causing a decrease in the prediction accuracy of the braking performance. This paper reverse-designed the ABS that controlled angular acceleration based on the information on brake pressure, etc., which were obtained from vehicle tests, and established a braking performance prediction analysis model by combining a multi-body dynamics(MBD) vehicle model and a magic formula(MF) tire model. The established analysis model was verified after comparing it with the results of the braking tests of an actual vehicle. Using this analysis model, this study analyzed the braking effect by vehicle factor, and finally designed a tire that had optimized braking performance. As a result of this study, it was possible to design the MF tire model whose braking performance improved by 9.2 %.

  • Analysis of brake characteristics has progressed rapidly in recent years, as computer techniques have developed. However, there are many problems in predicting braking characteristics, due to the numerous design variables of the brake system. Therefore, a synthetic braking performance analysis is required for all brake system parts such as master cylinder, booster, control valve and split system. In this paper, a program which can analyze braking performance such as force distribution, braking efficiency, pedal force and pedal travel, is presented. The preprocessor of the program helps users prepare input files through a dialog box. An additional postprocessor makes the graph presentation of solved results. Also, a simple example problem is applied to show the usefulness of the presented program.

  • In this paper, a simulator hardware and control design for an electronic parking brake (EPB) are proposed for emergency vehicle braking when the hydraulic break and anti-lock brake systems (ABS) fail to function. EPB systems are designed specifically for park braking and are usually installed on the rear wheels. However, in an emergency situation when all vehicle brake systems fail, the EPB can be utilized to stop the vehicle and track the target slip ratio as the ABS. This paper analyzed the non-linear EBP of the type of motor on caliper (MoC) based on experiments. A simulator hardware is also designed to validate the performance of the designed EPB controller in terms of braking distance and performance in tracking the target slip ratio. Through the experimental analysis, it is confirmed that a sliding mode controller can be applied on a non-linear EPB to track the target slip ratio.

  • Wheel-slip control systems are able to control the braking force more accurately and can be adapted to different vehicles more easily than conventional ABS systems. But, in order to achieve the superior braking performance through the wheel-slip control, real-time information such as the tire braking force is required. For example, in the case of EHB (Electro-Hydraulic Brake) systems, the tire braking force cannot be measured directly, but can be approximated based on the characteristics of the brake disk-pad friction. The friction characteristics can change significantly depending on aging of the brake, moisture on the contact area, heat etc. In this paper, a wheel slip The proposed wheel slip control system is composed of two subsystems: braking force monitor and robust slip controller In the brake force monitor subsystem, the tire braking forces as well as the brake disk-pad friction coefficient are estimated considering the friction variation between the brake pad and disk. The robust wheel slip control subsystem is designed based on sliding mode control methods and follows the target wheel-slip using the estimated tire braking forces. The proposed sliding mode controller is robust to the uncertainties in estimating the braking force and brake disk-pad friction. The performance of the proposed wheel-slip control system is evaluated in various simulations.
