The Korea's automotive industry has been changed since 1990's for the global reform of the automotive industry even though the rapid growth of domestic market from the late 1980's to early 1990's The cultural understanding for an automobile in the Korea society has been relatively lacked by the political reason, which focused on the economic growth through the industrialization. This works as a limit which caused by the point of view which is concentrated into the automotive industry as an economy developing tool. As much as being observed in the advanced nations which have the long history and huge scale of the automotive industry, an automobile is not only a single product, but also a way of life which has a cultural background. It is possible to develop a competitive quality and design with an understanding the cultural background. And the most important thing to the Korean automotive industry is a uniqueness with the cultural character which is gained by the cultural understanding of automobile as in the public Therefore the contribution of infrastructure of Korean automotive industry and culture would become more important in the future.

In the design of a combat vehicle, various performances such as firepower, mobility and survivability, etc., should be considered. Furthermore, since these performances relate to each other, design framework which can treat an integrated system should be employed to design the combat vehicle. In this paper, we use empirical interior ballistic and 3D combat vehicle analyses for predicting firepower and mobility performances which are developed in previous study (1) integrated performance modeling. In firepower performance, pitch and roll angle by sequential firing are considered. In mobility performance, vertical acceleration after passing through a bump is regarded. However, since there are many design variables such as mass of vehicle, mass of suspension, spring and damping coefficient of suspension and tire, geometric variables of vehicle, etc., for firepower and mobility performance, we utilize analysis of variance and quality function deployment to reduce the number of design variables. Finally, integrated design optimization is carried out for integrated performance such as firepower and mobility.

Analysis and experiment on dynamic characteristics of automotive roof have been carried out experimentally and numerically to design a lightweight roof. Finite element analysis of a conventional steel automotive roof was verified by experiments on vibration characteristics. The dynamic analysis of carbon fiber reinforced composite automotive roof shows that the roof stiffness changes as the fiber orientation of the laminated panel changes. Optimization results yielded a composite roof, which was 52% lighter, than the steel conventional steel automotive roof. This paper addresses a design strategy of composite roof for weight reduction.

A systematic methodology has been proposed to establish a reliable design of water pump system. A simplified steady-state dynamic model of water pump system has been developed to study the response of water pump system to the dynamic load mainly due to the run-out and unbalance. Design modifications are needed to strengthen the structural integrity of existing designs. Increasing the natural frequency of system is pursued to prevent a resonance from occurring in the engine excitation range. A computational reliability methodology combined with finite element analysis is used to identify the most significant factor affecting the system performance. This method considered influence of design control parameters for the performance of design. By including control factors to the system model in a systematic way, more reliable design is expected.

This paper describes a dedicated three-dimensional CAD system for design of drawing dies for automotive body panels. Since solid die models are useful not only for simulations for design verification, but also for NC tool path generation to machine dies and their Styrofoam patterns, 3-D CAD systems have been introduced in the tooling shop of automotive manufacturers. However, the work to build solid models requires a lot of time and effort if the designer uses only the general modeling capabilities of commercial 3-D CAD systems. To solve this problem, we customized a 3-D CAD system for the drawing die design. The system provides not only 3-D design capabilities, but also standard part libraries to enhance design productivity. By introducing this system, the drawing dies can be designed more rapidly in the 3-D space, and their solid data can be directly transferred to CAM tools for NC tool path generation and simulation tools for virtual manufacturing

Finite element analysis along with DOE scheme has been performed to obtain robust design of connecting rod assembly. An analysis was conducted with five loading steps. Fatigue analysis was done using commercial software FEMFAT and fatigue safety factors at the interested regions such as shank area of small end and big end were calculated. 27 design cases using 3 factors with 3 levels are constructed by design of experiment. Each case is simulated to find the most influential factors. Response for this study, maximum Von-Mises stress, has been used to determine main factors of connecting rod assembly. Among the 3 factors, compression load affected the response greatly. However, bolt assembly load and width of shank flat area showed a little influence to the response. Interaction effects among factors considered did not occur. Connecting rod assembly considered in this study showed its sensitivity to the noise factor such as compression load rather than design factor such as width of flat shank area.

This paper has been focused on the development of integrated automotive muffler system to meet getting more stringent sound quality target. Typically, muffler system consists of resonator and main muffler. The many varieties in exhaust pipe routing and the flexibility in muffler design make it possible to design an exhaust system to deliver tailpipe sound for specific sound quality requirement. In recent, it is strongly recommended that the function of resonator be merged into that of main muffler due to severe space limitation of underbody. The main objective of the paper is to study the effects of various geometrical parameters on the muffler performance. This work has succeeded in eliminating resonator without loss of muffler performance. This work has also investigated the effect of diameter of hole, geometries of pipes and location of muffler on the sound quality.

This paper proposes a decoupler design method to reduce interaction between exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) and variable geometry turbocharger (VGT) systems in passenger car diesel engines. The EGR valve and VGT vane are respectively used to control air-to-fuel ratio (AFR) of exhaust gas and intake pressure. A plant model for EGR and VGT systems is defined by a first order transfer function plus time-delay model, and the loop interaction between these systems is analyzed using a relative normalized gain array (RNGA) method. In order to deal with the loop interaction, a design method for simplified decoupler is applied to this study. Feedback control algorithms for AFR and intake pressure are composed of a compensator using PID control method and a prefilter. The proposed decoupler is evaluated through engine experiment, and the results successfully showed that the loop interaction between EGR and VGT systems can be reduced by using the proposed decoupler. Furthermore, it presents stable performance even off from the designed operating point.

This paper presents AUTOSAR-ready light software architecture (AUTOSAR-Lite), which is a light weighted version of the AUTOSAR, for automotive embedded control systems. The proposed AUTOSAR-Lite reduces overhead problems caused by the excessive standard specifications of AUTOSAR. Concurrently, AUTOSAR-Lite keeps advantages of AUTOSAR such as a scalability, re-usability, reliability, and transferability. The fundamental design of AUTOSAR-Lite is originated from the AUTOSAR standard. AUTOSAR-Lite is composed of three layers such as an application software, runtime environment, and basic software layer. The application software layer adopts component-based design methodology as AUTOSAR. The runtime environment layer integrates interfaces between application and basic software layers. In case of the basic software layer, restrictions of the module configurations and interfaces of basic software are minimized. In order to validate the feasibility of AUTOSAR-Lite, a software design result based on AUTOSAR-Lite software architecture for electronic throttle control (ETC) system is suggested.

Recently, the trend of zero emissions has increased in automotive engineering because of environmental problems and regulations. Therefore, the development of battery electric vehicles (EVs), hybrid/plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs/PHEVs), and fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) has been mainstreamed. In particular, for light-duty electric vehicles, improvement in electric motor performance is directly linked to driving range and driving performance. In this paper, using an improved design for the interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPMSM), the EV driving range for the light-duty EV was extended. In the electromagnetic design process, a 2D finite element method (FEM) was used. Furthermore, to consider mechanical stress, ANSYS Workbench was adopted. To conduct a vehicle simulation, the vehicle was modeled to include an electric motor model, energy storage model, and regenerative braking. From these results, using the advanced vehicle simulator (ADVISOR) based on MATLAB Simulink, a vehicle simulation was performed, and the effects of the improved design were described.
