Motion Identification using Neural Networks and Its Application to Automatic Ship Berthing under Wind

  • In this paper, a motion identification method using neural networks is applied to automatic ship berthing to overcome disturbance effects. Motion identification is used to estimate the effect of environmental disturbance. Two rule-based algorithms have been developed to over-come disturbance. The first rule based-algorithm was designed to overcome lateral disturbance when a ship's lateral speed is affected by it. The second rule-based algorithm was also designed to overcome longitudinal disturbance when a ship's angular velocity is changed by it. Finally, numerical simulations for automatic berthing are carried out, and the suggested control system is proved to be more practical under disturbance circumstances.

  • In these days many people have studied on the berthing problem. The operation rules differ from port so port and the problem is highly dependent on the environment of port. The purpose of this study is to develop a decision support system decision makers of the berthing problem for Inchon Port. The system is developed with graphic user interface(GUI) using user-interactive approach and some general and specific rules for Inchon Prot are considered. The system is composed of the following four parts ; the input/output part, the automatic berthing part by the system using rules, the manual berthing part by user, and the part for modifying results or handling exceptional events. The system is designed to assign ship to berths by matching the characteristics with environmental and operational constraints of Inchon Port. We expect that this system can provide decision makers with an efficient and fast way to berthing and can reduce wastes of time, space, and manpower in port operations.

  • Vessel maneuvering problem in the harbor area is generating considerable interests in terms of marine cybernetics. In this sense, the vessel is operated and moves at ultimately low or zero speed in shallow water area. So the vessel is usually aided by the cooperation with thrusters, main propulsion system, tugboats and pilots, etc. In this paper, we suggest a new vessel berthing technique using dampers and winches as a solution for excessively complicate and dangerous berthing work. In the proposed berthing method, in order to manipulate the actuators (winches and dampers), a simple and heuristic control strategy is applied for a basic experiment. Finally, experiments are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed automatic vessel berthing strategy based on the heuristic control method.

  • Studies on the ship's automatic navigation & berthing control have been continued by way of solving the ship's mathematical model, but the results of such studies have not reached to our satisfactory level due to its non-linear characteristics at low speed. In this paper, the authors propose a new berthing control system which can evaluate as closely as cap-tain's decision-making by using the FNN(Fuzzy Neural Network) controller which can simulate captain's knowledge. This berthing controller consists of the navigation subsystem FNN controller and the berthing subsystem FNN controller. The learning data are drawn from Ship Handling Simulator (NavSim NMS-90 MK Ⅲ) and represent the ship motion characteristics internally. According to learning procedure, both FNN controllers can tune membership functions and identify fuzzy control rules automatically. The verified results show the FNN controllers effective to incorporate captain's knowledge and experience of berthing.

Optimal Control Design for Automatic Ship Berthing by Using Bow and Stern Thrusters

  • Conventionally, because it is difficult to control a ship in shallow water and because attempting to do so creates unwanted environmental effects, maneuvering ships in the harbor area for berthing is usually done with the assistance of tugboats. In this paper, we propose a new method for berthing ships automatically by using bow and stern thrusters. Specifically, a steering motion model of a ship is considered, and parameters in the equation are evaluated by the system identification technique. An optimal controller based on observations was designed from the linearization of the non-linear ship motion in the horizontal plane. It is used to reduce the uncertainty about the ship's dynamics and reduce measurement requirements. The performance of the controller was also analyzed for its robustness relative to avoiding disturbing the environment due to winds, currents, and wave-drift forces. Experiments were conducted to estimate the potential for identifying result and the design of the controller. Specifically, in this paper, the system modeling and tracking control approach are discussed based on a two-degree-of-freedom (2DOF) servo-system design.

Automatic Berthing Finite-time Control Considering Transmission Load Reduction

  • In this study, we investigates the auto-berthing problem for the underactuated surface vessel in the presence of constraints of dynamic uncertainties, finite time, transmission load, and environmental disturbance. A novel control scheme is proposed by fusing the finite time control technology and the event-triggered input algorithm. In the algorithm, differential homeomorphism coordinate the transformation is used to solve the problem of underactuation. Then, we apply the finite time technology and event triggered to save the time of the berthing vessel and relieve transmission burden between the controller and the vessel respectively. Moreover, a radial basis function network is used to approximate unknown nonlinear functions, and minimum learning parameters are introduced to lessen the computational complexity. A sufficient effort has been made to verify the stability of the closed-loop system based on the Lyapunov stability theory. Finally, simulation results display the effectiveness of the proposed scheme.

  • 본 논문은 자동계류 장치에 설치하여 선박의 접안 상황을 검출할 수 있는 시각 센서의 개발에 대하여 논하고 있다. 선박의 접안 시 사고방지를 위해 선박의 속도를 통제하고 위치를 확인하고 있음에도 불구하고 부두에서의 선박 충돌사고는 매년 발생하고 있으며, 이로 인한 경제적, 환경적 피해가 매우 크다. 따라서 부두에 접안하는 선박에 대한 안전성 확보를 위해 선박의 위치 및 속도 정보를 신속하게 확보할 수 있는 시각 시스템의 개발은 중요하다. 이에 본 연구에서는 선박의 접안 시 사람과 유사하게 영상을 통해 접안하는 선박을 관찰하고, 주변 환경에 따른 선박의 접안 상태를 적절하게 확인할 수 있는 시각센서를 개발하였다. 먼저, 개발하고자 하는 시각 센서의 적정성을 확보하기 위해 기존 센서로부터 제공되는 정보, 감지 범위, 실시간성, 정확도 및 정밀도 측면에서 센서 특성을 분석하였다. 이러한 분석 자료를 바탕으로 LiDAR형태의 3D시각 시스템의 개념 설계, 구동메커니즘 설계 및 모션 구동부의 힘과 위치 제어기 설계 등을 수행하여 대상물의 정보를 실시간으로 획득할 수 있는 3D 시각 모듈을 개발하였다. 최종적으로 시스템 구동을 위한 제어 시스템의 성능평가와 스캔 속도에 대한 성능을 분석하였고, 실험을 통해 개발된 시스템의 유용성을 확인할 수 있었다.

부산 북항에서 VTS 시스템에 의한 출입항 선박의 접이안 작업과정의 실시간 모니터링 (Real-time monitoring of berthing/deberthing operations process for entering/leaving vessels using VTS system in Busan northern harbor, Korea)

  • The process of berthing/deberthing operations for entering/leaving vessels in Busan northern harbor was analyzed and evaluated by using an integrated VTS(vessel traffic service) system installed in the ship training center of Pukyong National University, Busan, Korea. The integrated VTS system used in this study was consisted of ARPA radar, ECDIS(electronic chart display and information system), backup(recording) system, CCTV(closed-circuit television) camera system, gyro-compass, differential GPS receiver, anemometer, AIS(automatic identification system), VHF(very high frequency) communication system, etc. The network of these systems was designed to communicate with each other automatically and to exchange the critical information about the course, speed, position and intended routes of other traffic vessels in the navigational channel and Busan northern harbor. To evaluate quantitatively the overall dynamic situation such as maneuvering motions for target vessel and its tugboats while in transit to and from the berth structure inside a harbor, all traffic information in Busan northern harbor was automatically acquired, displayed, evaluated and recorded. The results obtained in this study suggest that the real-time tracking information of traffic vessels acquired by using an integrated VTS system can be used as a useful reference data in evaluating and analyzing exactly the dynamic situation such as the collision between ship and berth structure, in the process of berthing/deberthing operations for entering/leaving vessels in the confined waters and harbor.

네트워크 기반의 예선사용 지원 시스템 개념 설계 (Conceptual Design of Network-based Pilot Supporting System)

  • 선박이 부두에 이접안할 경우 쓰러스터나 특수 추진기가 없는 선박은 예선의 도움을 받아 이접안을 하게 된다. 이접안시 예선들은 도선사의 명령에 의하여 선박의 이접안을 도와주게 된다. 이때 본선과 예선의 위치가 2차원 지도에 표시되고 부두와의 상대적인 거리가 나타난다면 이접안에 매우 도움이 될 것으로 생각된다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 예선사용 지윈 시스템에 대해서 개념 설계를 수행하였다. 예선사용 지원 시스템은 본선, 예선 및 부두의 상황을 모니터링하는 예선사용 모니터링 기능과 해양환경을 고려하여 필요한 예선력을 계산하여 나타내주는 예선사용 자동화 기능을 갖고 있다. 이러한 예선사용 지원 시스템은 항만에 설치된 네트워크를 기반으로 설계되었으며, 추후 한국해양연구원의 선박운항 시뮬레이터를 이용하여 검증될 계획이다.
