Robot technology is a remarkably interdisciplinary research area, one that can be employed in various industrial fields as well as higher value-added fields. The construction industry, on the other hand, has been known as one of the most difficult research fields to apply robotic schemes. Therefore, applying robot technologies in the construction industry is quite a challenging topic. This paper aims to introduce the progress of automated robotic systems in construction fields, namely with respect to construction robots. While construction robots have a very wide range of application depending on the huge market size of the construction industry, there still exist a lot of problems such as highly risky working environment and inefficiency due to the labor intensive characteristic. In order to solve these problems, a variety of construction robots have been developed and, in this paper, the current state of the robotic systems for construction works and the vision of future robot technology in the construction field are introduced.
Control of tool-environment interaction force to comply the robot system to an environment is of vital in many automated process. This paper presents the implementation of an adaptive force control with commercial robot system in two dimensional contour following task. A model reference adaptive control system, combined with the linear compensators, is implemented. That is, a use of adaptive control is to provide an auxiliary control system so that the contour following performance can be improved from that of using linear control system only. Hyperstability is used to derive the adaptive control law. Experimental verification of the proposed control system is obtained using PUMA 560 robot system. Data obtained experimentally shows that the use of additional adaptive control system improves the contour following performance about 30% in RMS contact force errors upon that of the system controlled by the linear compensators only.

The logistics market is continuously growing due to the development of technology and the growth of the online market. In addition, the social atmosphere that emphasizes non-face-to-face due to the pandemic situation is accelerating the growth of logistics. Delivery of goods ordered online requires delivery process through courier worker. In order for the courier worker to ship the product, the work of loading the product on the truck must be preceded. The accident caused by such delivery and loading work is increasing and it is emerging as a social problem. This study proposes a robot-based automated loading system to efficiently handle the increasing volume of courier service and to construct a more efficient and safe working environment by replacing the physical labor that was overloaded to courier workers. The proposed system replaces the loading of the courier worker and proposes the optimal loading function through the automation system.

The need for synthetic automation is increasing in preparation for a gradual decrease in laboratory research manpower due to low birth rate and aging. In this study, the existing laboratory synthesis method is analyzed based on the systems engineering technique. Then, it led to the derivation of the system requirements for a fixed-based robot manipulator capable of recognition, decision and control. The robot is equipped with replaceable modular end-effectors and designed depending on the purpose and process of the synthesis. The robot with an end-effector was implemented as PoC(Proof-of-Concept), and the functions for pipetting automation was verified.

Today, with the development of the Internet and mobile technology, consumers' purchasing patterns have shifted from offline to online. In addition, due to the recent COVID-19, online purchases have significantly increased, and accordingly, the courier industry for logistics delivery has also grown significantly. Various logistics robots are being operated in many industrial and can reduce the labor intensity and physical and mental fatigue of workers. However, if the logistics robot does not properly recognize the people or environment around it, it can lead to a serious accident. We conducted that how logistics robots can perform safe work in a working environment such as a logistics warehouse through the application of ISO/DIS 21448 (SOTIF) to autonomous logistics transport robots. This result is expected to contribute to the operation of unmanned logistics warehouses using AGV.

To improve construction productivity and quality, and to make the construction environment safe, a new system, Robot-based Construction Automation (RCA), is currently being developed in Korea. To determine whether RCA is an improvement over traditional construction methods (TCMs), an evaluation method, called the Performance Evaluation Index (PEI), is suggested for RCA. The PEI considers the relationships among the factors influencing the performance of the system obtained using the Delphi method and the analytic hierarchy process (AHP). As the evaluation shows, RCA is much better than TCM except for three factors: the rate of work success, quality improvement by learning experience, and construction duration.

The use of robots in automated factories requires accurate bin-picking to ensure that objects are correctly identified and selected. In the case of atypical objects with multiple reflections from their surfaces, this is a challenging task. In this paper, we developed a random 3D bin picking system by integrating the low-cost vision system with the robotics system. The vision system identifies the position and posture of candidate parts, then the robot system validates if one of the candidate parts is pickable; if a part is identified as pickable, then the robot will pick up this part and place it accurately in the right location.

Construction robotics is rapidly forming a market in conjunction with the development of sensing and artificial intelligence technologies. The layout work for accurately constructing the shape and dimensions of the building frame requires high accuracy and precision, and is one of the high demands for productivity and quality improvement through construction automation. Thus, as a preliminary study, we derived the elemental factors and performance requirements for developing an automated layout robot. In addition, alternatives on driving and marking units were investigated based on literature review and practioner's interview. The result of this study will be used as a basic data for the layout robot design.
Manual grafting is a labor-intensive operation and highly susceptible to human error. Development of grafting robot has been considered as an effective alternative to manual grafting. The study was conducted to investigate the grafting efficiency between the domestically produced automated grafting robot and traditional manual grafting performed in a commercial plug seedling greenhouse. Plug seedlings of pepper (Capsicum annuum L.) 'Buchon' and 'Anseongmatchum' were sown as scions and rootstocks, respectively on March 29, 2013. The grafting was performed by a grafting robot, amateur grafters, and professional grafters on May 31, 2013. After grafting, the seedling efficiencies and seedling characteristics were compared in terms of plant height, the number of success as well as failure of seedling grafts produced in an hour. The results showed that plant heights were most uniform in the grafts performed by the professionals that had a 0.6 cm difference whereas an uneven difference of 2.1 cm difference was observed in plug seedling grafted by an amateur. However, plug seedlings grafted by the grafting robot were found to be uniform with 1 cm plant height difference. Moreover, the maximum number of grafting processed plug seedlings per hour (667 plants) was achieved by the grafting robot on compared with the seedlings grafted (466 plants) by the professionals. Furthermore, the least failure rate of 21.7% was noted upon the usage of grafting robot than the manual grafters. Thus, the results demonstrate that the technology of automated grafting robots is the most appealing and can be employed in commercial plug seedling greenhouses to overcome the drawbacks of manual grafting.

Take-out robots used for handling of the plastic parts manufactured with the injection mold are usually the gantry type that consists of long and thin links. In this study, we want to evaluate the safety of the take-out Robot structure through finite element analysis. The take-out Robot is automated robot to transport from one location to another in the molded article. The take-out Robot structure has a 380 kilogram weight, a 1300mm width, a 670.5mm depth and a 670mm height. It confirms the equivalent stress and the deformation of the load and its own weight through weight analysis. It looks for the natural frequency of the take-out robot through modal analysis. It confirms the acceleration, the normal stress and the deformation about the natural frequency of the take-out robot through response analysis. Also It repeats the analysis by changing the structure of the take-out robot, to confirm the results and it is determined whether the safety of the structure. These analysis results are effectively used to reduce the vibration of the take-out robot.
